Provogue Records / Mascot Label Group present “Silver Paper,” featuring BLACKBERRY SMOKE’s Charlie Starr, in front of the March 25 release of LEGACY: A TRIBUTE TO LESLIE WEST. To screen the lyric video and hear the recording here.
In later life, West befriended Charlie Starr, singer and guitarist for the band Blackberry Smoke. Starr was in in awe of West, and he selected the soulful gem “Silver Paper” (from Climbing!) as his way of remembering his late pal. Responding to the muscular rhythm section of Rev Jones and Bobby Rondinelli, as well as the bravura keyboard playing of Mike DiMeo, Starr laser beams on the song’s joyous spiritual center and doesn’t let go. “I love ‘Silver Paper,’ and it’s got one of the coolest guitar licks of all time,” says Starr. “Leslie played exactly what the song needed; his timing was impeccable. He played way back in the pocket, and it was so nasty and so great – the kind of things that you aspire to. I’m very proud to be part of this project. God bless Leslie West.”
Co-producer and Leslie’s long-tenured drummer Bobby Rondinelli shares, “Growing up as a Mountain fan, then playing with Leslie for the last eight years has been a dream come true. Co-Producing this record with my buddy Mick James was a labor of love. ‘Silver Paper’ with Charlie Starr – I think you’ll agree Charlie nailed it, and it was a pleasure to work with. Rev Jones, Mike DiMeo and myself on drums, I think Leslie would approve.”
When Leslie West passed away in December of 2020, he left behind a towering legacy of epic recordings that few rock guitarists can match. But there was more to West than great songs (although, to be sure, he created a ton of them); there was his brilliant, idiosyncratic sound, a gargantuan earth-mover that razed arenas and stadiums across the globe. More than just paralyzing tone, though, he also had a touch nobody could beat. Stinging, swooning and sensual melodies leapt from his fingertips – with a deft flick of his wrist, he sounded like a Delta bluesman had picked up a violin. These elements and more helped to make West one of the most significant, influential and irreplaceable guitarists of the rock era.
Friends, and many whom were influenced by the loved West, have contributed to this special release. Amongst those who performed are Dee Snider and Twisted Sister bandmate Eddie Ojeda, Robby Krieger, Slash, Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy and Tal Bachman, Jethro Tull’s Martin Barre, Joe Lynn Turner, Blackberry Smoke’s Charlie Starr, The Cars’ Elliot Easton, George Lynch, Marty Friedman, Steve Morse, Dirty Honey’s Mark Labelle, Mike Portnoy, and West’s band members Bobby Rondinelli and Rev Jones. The release will be available on LP and CD, digitally, and as a web shop exclusive limited LP variation manufactured with digital. The pre-order is live here: www.smarturl.it/LeslieWestMLG.
“We were so blessed to be working with home-run hitters on each song,” says Bob Ringe, “but each one underscores the fact that Leslie is the true MVP. This record really shows that his work stands the test of time. When I listen to the album, it makes me look up to the sky, and I can just see that big mountain of a man, Leslie West, with a smile on his face going, ‘This makes me feel good.’”
For her part, Jenni West sums the album up thusly: “Nobody in this world has ever made me feel loved as much as Leslie, and I feel so honored and grateful that I could give him this gift.” She laughs. “He would often say, ‘If it doesn’t make my balls rumble, it’s not right.’ And I think there’s some balls-rumbling tones on this record! When you’re listening to it, you might even think it’s Leslie playing – and that’s a good thing. He really believed that adage of imitation being the sincerest form of flattery. Even when some of the players do their own twists on the music, they’re still doing it in a way that’s authentic and respectful, and Leslie would have appreciated that.”

KRIS BARRAS BAND have released their new album ‘Death Valley Paradise’ via Mascot Records / Mascot Label Group. Watch the ‘making of the album’ video below.
Next week the band will be beginning their biggest headline tour of the UK to date, playing 15 shows, beginning in Exeter for the first of two shows at the Phoenix on 8th March and finishing at London’s Electric Ballroom on 26th March. You can buy tickets from here.
Death Valley Paradise started life as a song before it was dissected and spread across the album. Death Valley is a place of extremes, where living things are said to not be able to survive. “To survive and thrive in those circumstances and find your paradise in it. For me, it sums up the journey I’ve been through,” says the former MMA/Cage fighter.

Produced by Dan Weller (Enter Shikari, Bury Tomorrow, SiKth) and recorded at VADA Studios in Alcester, they return darker, more introspective, but enormous at the same time. On the album, Barras began collaborating with songwriters for the first time, such as the heavyweights; Jonny Andrews (Three Days Grace, Fozzy), Bob Marlette (Alice Cooper, Airbourne, Rob Zombie), Blair Daly (Halestorm, Black Stone Cherry) and Zac Maloy (Shinedown, Tyler Bryant).
They’ve so far released four singles, including the album’s high voltage calling card, “My Parade” – Barras says, “This is my life, and this is how I’m gonna live it.” Album opener and first single, “Dead Horses”, shakes the foundations delving into broken relationships, he addresses negative internal thoughts on “These Voices” and on “Who Needs Enemies” Barras says; “This track started life as one of the first songs I wrote for the album. It was originally called ‘Friends Like Enemies’. I probably re-wrote it 4 or 5 times before settling on the final version, after working on it with a songwriter friend based in Nashville, Blair Daly. It’s basically a song about betrayal, a friend that has stabbed you in the back. The main tag line being “Who needs enemies, with friends like you”.
Death Valley Paradise is the band’s heaviest material to date and they ended last year with triumphant 16-date sold-out tour supporting Kentucky heavyweights Black Stone Cherry – including the iconic Royal Albert Hall in September 2021 and they played two nights at the prestigious Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London with The Darkness in December, playing the new songs to a rapturous response. Following their headline tour this month they will be playing the prestigious Wembley Arena with the mighty Thunder in May.
The band are Kris Barras (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Josiah J. Manning (Rhythm Guitars/ Vocals), Billy Hammett (Drums) And Kelpie Mackenzie (bass).

Following several US dates this spring, the band will be headlining the European Headbangers Ball Tour 2022, as founding guitarist Phil Demmel reflects on the current state of VIO-LENCE, “We want to constantly be releasing music, and constantly doing shows. At this stage we’re excited for everybody who’s still excited for this band. To them I say thank you for still listening to and supporting us, we’re excited to come play, so spread the VIO-LENCE!“
Speaking on the five song EP, frontman Sean Killian believes, “Each song has its own individual sound, they are all very thrash metal, there are grinding riffs, technical riffs, and plenty of speed. The lyrics are written freely with no restrictions and without compromise while the vocal patterns are typically unusual and delivered with a multitude of emotions.” On composing the new songs, Demmel adds, “I hadn’t written a lot of thrash in the past 17 years but being the main songwriter for the band over the years I wanted that sound, I wanted that mid-80’s raw thing, but I also wanted to capture our signature notes and structures and stuff like that.“
Filling out the band’s ranks on Let The World Burn alongside Demmel and Killian are original drummer Perry Strickland, former OVERKILL guitarist Bobby Gustafson and former FEAR FACTORY bassist Christian Olde Wolbers. Let the World Burn was recorded with Juan Urteaga at Trident Studios (Testament, Machine Head, Exodus), with mixing handled by Tue Madsen (The Haunted, Meshuggah) and Grammy Award winning engineer Ted Jensen (Alice In Chains, Deftones, Pantera).

New York’s SANHEDRIN have released their upcoming album, Lights On, today via Metal Blade Records. The Brooklyn power trio do metal the old school way, channeling the greats that preceded them to create something that is instantly familiar yet with a new, modern energy to it. The band also delivers their latest single, the writhing and controversial “Scythian Women.”
Vocalist/bassist and key lyricist Erica Stoltz says that she is reflecting that which she sees, “having some existential crises and celebrating life,” and she draws from a broad palette. “Scythian Women” refers to a significant archeological find in Russia in December of 2019. “A burial of 4 warriors aged 12 to 50 years old with all of their battle gear was found. They were all women. The 12-year-old had her legs broken in death to look like she was riding a horse. These were Scythian warriors, and pre-Christian expressions of womanhood.“
Tracked, mixed and co-produced by Colin Marston at his studio Menegroth, The Thousand Caves in Woodhaven, Queens, NY, Lights On refers to the many events of the last few years that have exposed larger societal issues long hidden or ignored. “In a manner of speaking the veil has been lifted before our eyes and the light is finally shining through the darkness,” says guitarist Jeremy Sosville.
Rounded out by drummer Nathan Honor, the band state, “In a time where the world around you feels like it’s aflame, when our heavy metal heroes are beginning to disappear to failing health or changing social norms, we, SANHEDRIN, stand here as a shining light through the dark. We are prepared to fly the flag of heavy metal in these trying and uncertain times and have only begun to show the world what we are capable of.“
SANHEDRIN is slated for festival appearances across Europe and the US this year, starting with the “Slaves Of Light Tour,” with German rockers Stallion, kicking of May 1st in Osnabruck, Germany.

Morten Veland (SIRENIA, MORTEMIA and founder of TRISTANIA) has released the 8th MORTEMIA song from ‘The Pandemic Pandemonium Sessions’. The track features Erica Ohlsson (Metalite) on guest vocals, and was released yesterday, 4th of March 2022, via all digital platforms. The track is entitled ‘Lost Horizon’.
Morten Veland:
“I am proud and honoured to introduce Erica Ohlsson from Metalite as my special guest for ‘The Pandemic Pandemonium Sessions’. The eight song is entitled ‘Lost Horizon’, and is now available on all digital platforms.
When I first started working on this project I was spending quite a lot of time looking for bands in the genre that was new to me. I was curious what was going on in the scene, and I finally had the time to update myself. One of the bands that I discovered early on was Metalite, I really liked their modern and catchy style of metal, and I was instantly blown away by Erica’s amazing voice. I feel truly privileged and thankful to have Erica on board this project, and I am really looking forward to sharing this song with you all. This song is more of an uptempo song, I find it very powerful, atmospheric and catchy.”
Erica Ohlsson:
”I got the question to record the clean vocals for Morten Velands (Sirenia) studio project Mortemia. The song sounded very modern, melodic with a lot of energy, I liked it a lot so of course I wanted to join. With help from my Metalite colleague Edwin we recorded it and we are really happy about the result! It sounds awesome! Hope you like it as much as I do.”
After 11 years of silence Norwegian multi-instrumentalist, producer and artist Morten Veland is once more active with his solo project Mortemia, this time with a brand new concept. ‘The Pandemic Pandemonium Sessions’ is a series of singles released on a monthly basis, each song featuring a well known and highly profiled guest singer from the metal scene, so far the following singers has contributed:
Madeleine Liljestam (Eleine) Marcela Bovio (Stream of Passion, Ayreon, MaYaN, Dark Horse White Horse) Alessia Scolletti (Temperance, ERA) Liv Kristine (Liv Kristine, ex-Theatre of Tragedy, ex-Leaves Eyes) Melissa Bonny (Ad Infinitum, The Dark Side of the Moon) Brittney Slayes (Unleash the Archers) Maja Shining (Forever Still) Erica Ohlsson (Metalite)
