Chilean MAWIZA Beam with Strength in New Video for ‘Killari’

While still ascending on the metal scene, Mawiza are empowered by their indigenous roots.

The Chilean band hail from the ancestral territory of Wallmapu, which belongs to the Mapuche Nation. By proudly embracing ancestral instruments, traditional chanting and the Mapuzungun language, their style of groove metal has brought them international acclaim. They’ve won a Chilean Grammy and performed alongside Mercyful Fate, Mastodon, Slipknot and Gojira. Having now signed with the French label Season of Mist, this year, Mawiza are releasing their spirited third album, which RollingStone named one of the 15 Latin Albums that they can’t wait to hear.

As this band of warriors prepare to set up on new horizons, today, Mawiza are releasing a new video. Though the song reflects how their culture has changed, “Killari” beams with the strength that they draw from their native land.

Stream “Killari” at https://orcd.co/mawizakillari

Mawiza have shared a stage with metal’s biggest influences, but the band are guided by the spirit of nature. In English, “Killari” means “Moonlight”. Much like its namesake, the song reveals its transformative energy in phases. Double bass scampers under the cover of darkness as a clean, somber guitar melody is plucked like stars from the sky. “Chomü rayen teyfükan  (Destroy the withered flower)”, the band howl in unison. “Taiñ mongen ñi afkülekan / Re rükükan mew (End our existence / Out of pure selfishness)”.

At home, Mawiza have seen the Mapuche Nation endure troubling times. Trees on their land have been cut down by developers. Many people from the tribe have been forced to move into the city. “My mother taught me to respect all life”, says the band’s vocalist and rhythm guitarist Awka. Between its scraping dissonant riffs and the flowing proggy grooves of bassist Zewü, “Killari” waxes and wanes between sorrow and anger. But by following the moon, the band find strength in transformation. “Wenu peaymi / Look to the sky!“, Awka shouts with both his spear and axe raised as the drums circle into a thunderous breakdown.

“You can feel low in the night”, says Awka, who identifies as non-binary. “Our people have often witnessed oppression against those deemed ‘deviant’, ‘nefarious’ or ‘diabolical’ for not fitting into the concept of man and woman. In ancient times, masculinity and femininity were respected and understood as real forces in constant communication, prayer and movement. But as time passed, through way and the loss of the Spanish crown, the image of the Mapuche man became idealized as virile, strong and an overwhelming warrior, while the woman was seen as the source of future heirs.

“If there is one concept that we as young Mapuche embrace, it’s total decolonization”, he continues. “As wentxu or ‘men’ of the Mapuche people, we need zomo newen or ‘feminine strength’ to exist in a permanent state within each of us. We protect our Epu püllü or ‘two spirits’ with songs like ‘Killari’.

“I feel a deep connection to the moon and how it influences all cycles of nature, including the transformation within ourselves”, says drummer Txalkan, who wrote the music for “Killari”. “The song weaves together rhythms and claves from various Latin American percussion styles. When I play it, I try and reflect that sense of movement and evolution through its variations”.

The video for “Killari” also reflects the changing forces within the Mapuche Nation. “In popular culture, Indians are often shown wearing dirty clothes or being covered in mud”, the band says. “We wanted to look like kings”. To make this fashion statement, they collaborated with three of the most prominent trendsetters in Latin America. Their stylish outfits were designed by Matías Hernán (@matias_hernan), Ceremonia (@ceremonia_) and Labios Enfermos (@labios.enfermos).

Even the filming location for “Killari” was chosen after an artist’s own heart. What was once an abandoned underwear factory was converted by Chilean artist Beatrice di Girolamo into a woodworking studio. It’s here, in this re-imagined space, that Mawiza uncover a modern piece of Mapuche artwork in the climbing light of Karü’s  guitar solo. “Killari” first appeared on the band’s previous album Kollong, which in English means ‘mask’. While kollongs are traditionally carved from wood, by adding bits of moss and industrial plastic, this new version pieces together all the current aspects of Mapuche culture.

“Naq uwamtuymi ta lüq pelom / Feel the white light descending“, Awka chants. As he dons the mask, Mawiza becomes the sworn protectors of this illuminating ceremony.

“Some ancient Mapuche concepts are impossible to translate” Awka says. “It would be easy to say that our society was inclusive with non-binary and gender-fluid people. But it is far more complex. Our words are not static. Our weavings are not tied with blind knots. Our ruke or ‘house’ are made to be disassembled.

“Our machi have always embodied this from the most visible perspective”, he continues. “The body is a vessel for forces. The feminine force of küyen is crucial to our understanding and daily lives as Mapuche. Look to the sky and you can find the strength of your mother”.

The video for “Killari” was directed by  Andrés Hetzler (@andreshetzler).

MAWIZA is a metal band originally from the Wallmapu, ancestral territory of the Mapuche Nation in South America, which sings in Mapuzungun, their ancestral language.

Their identity is based on the preservation of their roots, the relationship of the human being with nature and the conservation of biodiversity, guided by their cosmovision and cultural struggle.

Founded in 2014 as Nunca Seremos Dichosos, they released two albums under that moniker, Tierra (2017) and Kollong (2019). With such formation they managed to tour not only Chile, but also Colombia and Bolivia. Kollong included the single “Mawiza ñi piwke”, the first Metal song sung entirely in Mapuzungun. The album won in 2020 the prestigious Pulsar Award (Chilean Grammys) in the Best Metal Artist category.

After several line-up changes, in 2021, the band decided to change its name to Mawiza and leave behind its mixed use of Spanish and Mapuzungun, committing to Mapuzungun as its sole language of expression.

Major milestones in the band’s career include: opening for Gojira and Mastodon in 2022 in front of more than 10,000 people, playing with Mercyful Fate at the Movistar Arena Santiago, performing at Knotfest Chile 2023 and playing in front of 30,000 people at the Pasiwali Festival in Taiwan.

Others include participating in the Fluvial music fair in Valdivia, as well as in the Micsur fair in Santiago.

In 2023, Mawiza released the single “Txükur” with the Mapuche rapper MC Millaray and a tremendous and very particular version of Metallica’s “Battery”, which they adapted to Mapuzungun.

In August 2023, Mawiza were invited to record a live session by Joe Duplantier, leader of Gojira and owner of Silver Chord Studios in New York. They also visited West West Side Studio, owned by renowned producer Alan Douches and performed an acoustic concert at Selva Gallery in Brooklyn.

At the end of 2024, Mawiza re-released Kollong. This version includes new recordings of vocals done entirely in Mapuzungun and drums re-recorded by Txalkan.

This year, Mawiza will release their third album on Season of Mist.

HIROE Announce Debut Album “Wield” + Release First Single ‘Tides’

Hiroe, the new darlings of the American post-rock underground, return with news of their debut album, Wield, due 20th June via Pelagic Records.

Pre-order Wield here: https://orcd.co/hiroe

The band have today released their first single from Wield, the titanic ‘Tides’.

Both powerfully melodic and heavy, Wield shows the Philadelphia-based quintet mastering their craft, of creating compelling melodies that sound larger than life.

On ‘Tides’, the group comment: “The intention for ‘Tides’ was to evoke aural imagery akin to an unstoppable force colliding with an immovable object. Our studio intern’s observation perfectly captured this sentiment: “it sounds like a soundtrack for Godzilla fighting King Kong”.  There’s an undercurrent of frustration woven into the song. It serves as a metaphor for the very universal human experience for us all – the constant challenges, both monumental and mundane, that we all face in a struggle to exist.”

2022 saw Hiroe burst onto the scene with an explosive debut EP full of soaring anthems and sublime soundscapes. Combining the sonic expansiveness of Deftones with the dynamic heaviness of bands like Isis and Caspian, Hiroe immediately already figured out how to make the most majestic sounding post-rock early in their career. “Our first album, Wrought was a statement of creation,” explains principal songwriter Eric Kusanagi (guitars).

For the recording of Wield, Jill Paslier moved from bass to guitars, with Brian Kong (guitars), Jon Seiler (bass) and Dan Sagherian (drums) joining to complete the lineup. Produced once more by Mario Quintero (Spotlights) Wield capitalises on everything the band learned in the creation of its predecessor, adding to it a new focus on textural intricacies and compositional detail.

“We wanted to show a larger range of musical themes on this record,” continues Eric. “You’ll hear us dive into some synth work, some piano work, some really interesting effects that Mario helped us dial up.” Wield as a result packs in a huge range of details, which reveal themselves over repeated listens.

Nevertheless, Wield is still an affair of instant gratification for fans of guitar driven post-rock. From the soaring leads of ‘Tides’ to the epic finale of ‘I’ve Been Waiting For You All My Life’, Hiroe show they’ve upped their game in every department, but especially that which tugs at your heartstrings.

Wield presents the brave new future we all need in these confusing times. A new American frontier on which we can build our wildest dreams and our most daring ambitions.

Swedish grandeurs of melancholic heaviness, KATATONIA, return with Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State, set for release on June 6, 2025 via Napalm Records. Once again, the Stockholm-based unit masterfully navigates the tightrope act between nocturnal darkness and Scandinavian despair while subtly weaving a sense of hope into the listener’s heart. Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State marks the next step in KATATONIA’s evolution, building upon the foundation of their previous album, Sky Void of Stars (2023) and also is an introduction to their two new guitarists. KATATONIA in 2025 is composed of vocalist and founding member Jonas Renkse, bassist Niklas Sandin, drummer Daniel Moilanen, and guitarists Nico Elgstrand and Sebastian Svalland.

With the album’s lead single “Lilac”, revealed today, KATATONIA offer a first glimpse of what fans can expect from the new record. The track showcases Jonas Renkse’s unmistakable vocals intertwining with hypnotic rhythms, heavy riffs, and progressive elements. Accompanied by an atmospheric official music video, “Lilac” speaks straight to the heart, proving KATATONIA’s matchless ability to draw listeners into a whirlwind of stirring emotions.

Jonas Renkse adds:
“We are proud and excited to announce our new album, Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State, coming out via Napalm Records on June 6. As always, these songs are the stories that thrive in the corner of the eye, obscured by the light but waiting to come alive in the dusk of our morbid existence. Please enjoy the first scent – ‚Lilac‘. “

On Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State, crystal-clear production highlights the interplay between silence and intensity, while the contrast of heavy riffs, delicate guitar harmonies, ethereal synthesizers, and atmospheric nuances create captivating tension. Tracks like “Thrice” and “Warden” pulse with dynamic energy, a near-ceremonial piece, “Wind of No Change”, merges subtle electronic textures with KATATONIA’s enigmatic soundscapes, while “Temporal” balances fragility and strength – its intense verses culminating in a soaring, emotionally charged chorus. The breathtaking “Efter Solen” (Engl. After the Sun), featuring Swedish lyrics, evokes echoes of Jonas Eika’s 2018 short story collection, with minimalistic yet striking instrumentation.

Even after more than 30 years, KATATONIA continues to redefine the emotional spectrum of their genre, effortlessly shifting between haunting vulnerability and commanding artistry. With sonic landscapes that evoke dystopia, inner demons, purity, and beauty alike, Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State stands as a testament to their enduring brilliance. The album was produced by Jonas Renkse, recorded by Lawrence Mackrory at NBS Audio and The City of Glass, mixed by Adam Noble, and mastered by Robin Schmidt at 24-96 Mastering.

FAIRYLAND to Release New Album “The Story Remains” on June 13th

French symphonic power metal band Fairyland are thrilled to announce the release of their new studio album “The Story Remains”, scheduled for June 13th, 2025, via Frontiers Music Srl.

Following the release of “A New Dawn”, the band now share the new single and accompanying video “To Stars And Beyond”, out now.

Pre-Order “The Story Remains” HERE

Bassist Willdric Lievin described the new single: “To Stars And Beyond was the first song from the new album we were working on. In this track you have everything you love about Fairyland – massive, majestic symphonic sound, juicy guitar solo, multilayered, rich orchestrations, catchy chorus and uplifting lyrics sung by our amazing new singer Archie Caine”.

“This song is about rebirth and renewal, it reminds you that after every dark time and hardship there’s a light coming, that you can turn your pain and your sorrows into something beautiful. You’re the master of your own life, you create it and as long as there’s a fire inside you, you can reach “to stars and beyond”, he added.

Talking about the new record, Lievin stated: “After the passing of the Fairyland’s founder and mastermind Phil Giordana, we faced the challenge to finish the fifth album. Phil left plenty of material, but it required a lot of further work. It wasn’t easy but in the face of adversity we excelled and managed to complete the album. This, along with a new lineup, starts a new chapter in the history of Fairyland. It continues the symphonic, power metal quality that Fairyland is known for, but we decided to add some new elements to this musical landscape”.

“The Story Remains is richer and more versatile than previous albums, and we are exploring new musical and lyrical territory for the band. We are happy and proud of this new album, and we hope that listening to it will give you a lot of delight. Welcome back to Fairyland”, he continued.

French Symphonic Masters Fairyland are back with the long-awaited album “The Story Remains”. The band is a well-known name in the symphonic metal scene, appreciated and with a specific trademark made of majestic orchestration able to bring the listeners in their fantasy world.

Fairyland was formed in 1998 as Fantasia by Philippe Giordana and Willdric Lievin. Both musicians shared the same passion for epic and symphonic heavy metal. Fantasia recruited guitarist Anthony Parker and entered Wizard Studio in February 2002. During the recording, they found Elisa C. Martin, already known for her work with the power metal band Dark Moor.

At this time, the band’s name was changed to Fairyland. They signed a contract with NTS (now Replica Records). “Of Wars In Osyrhia” was released in April 2003. Shortly after, the band toured with Sonata Arctica and performed at the Swedish Rock Festival.

The second album “The Fall Of An Empire”, was recorded with: P. Giordana, A. Parker,  Max Leclerqc , Pierre-Emmanuel “Piwee” Desfray and Thomas “Tom” Cesario, and was released in 2006. A European tour with Kamelot and Leaves’ Eyes followed.

After the tour, the band split up. While working on the new material, Philippe decided to use the services of guest musicians for his next album. “Score To A New Beginning” was released in 2009, also marking the return of Willdric Lievin.

The fourth album “Osyrhianta” was released in 2020 (line-up: Philippe Giordana, Willdric Lievin, Francesco Cavalieri, JB Pol, and Sylvain Cohen).

Philippe Giordana passed away on October 21, 2022. In March 2023 Archie Caine was announced as the band’s new lead singer. In 2024 the line up was completed with Gideon Ricardo, Brieuc De Groof and J.B Pol.

“The Story Remains” perfectly incarnates the band’s trademark sound, and songs like “A New Dawn” or “Karma” are a perfect example of the amazing album that will make every symphonic metal freak’s heart beat with excitement!

“The Story Remains” Tracklist:

1.    Downfall
2.    To Stars And Beyond
3.    Karma
4.    A New Dawn
