FLOTSAM & JETSAM Drummer Ken Mary: “I Feel Like Metal is Squashed & Restricted On Social Media”

Posted by tarjavirmakari on January 4, 2025

Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voice spoke to Flotsam and Jetsam guitarist Michael Gilbert and Drummer Ken Mary about the bands new album ‘I AM THE WEAPON’ and the trends and changes in the music industry over the years.

When asked to compare today’s US metal scene to the rest of the world
“If you look at Europe they’re open, they never stopped loving metal and the weird thing in the United States  I feel like metal is actually squashed  on social media on things like YouTube. I think they restrict metal. I’m not sure exactly why or what the reasoning is but metal is huge everywhere else in the world (expect USA). Let’s take a band like Arch Enemy for instance, they’ll play huge festivals in Europe. They’ll play in front of half a million people in South America, huge shows in Japan. They come to the United States and Play House of Blues with a thousand people. So you tell me what’s going on? How can a band and how can a genre be huge everywhere else but not in the United States?  It seems kind of squashed to me.  There’s like a few bands here and there that are doing okay but by and large there’s a whole genre that is not doing well. I think the fans (In USA) aren’t as connected as in Europe. There’s a huge metal scene and everybody is connected and everybody goes to the festivals and everybody loves the music and it really doesn’t matter like, are you thrash metal, are you melodic metal like whatever you are the fans embrace everything. They’re not going like okay I’m only a thrash metal fan so I will only listen to thrash metal. I think that happens maybe a little more in the United States too where somebody goes okay. I like only a specific genre, a very specific area of a genre and I’m not going to listen to anything else. I think that happens maybe a little bit more in the US but I do think in terms of the mechanics of the industry I think that there is an effort in my opinion to elevate things like Rap and Pop and to sort of push metal to the Wayside.  Like I said there’s a few bands here and there that kind of buck the trend but for the most part that’s what I’m seeing in the United States.”

Ken Mary continued

“(Metal) it’s huge except for the United States. How is that possible?  I think it’s only possible through control and it’s control of the media and control of social media too. I mean there’s a lot of things that get blocked. I Notice this when we share something, let’s say I share something about Flotsam and Jetsam on my Facebook page. I’ll have 20 people share something that I shared and if I click on their share there’s like one person that has looked at  what they’ve shared. And you’re thinking to yourself, you’re going okay 20 people shared it so there should be like 10 more people you know sharing it there and it should go viral and it should expand so how is that not happening?  I can tell you the algorithm here is definitely in my opinion skewing things and and maybe not just metal but seems like with music they’re very careful. I think to some degree they’re concerned about becoming the next  Myspace or something like that. Myspace towards the end just became this social media Network that was all about promoting bands and I think somewhere at Facebook somebody’s very concerned about that and they don’t want to see that happen with Facebook that’s my theory.”

When asked if constant Radio Play would help Flotsam and Jetsam
“It absolutely would. You’re talking about getting a song into the public Consciousness. If you have a song that’s being played all the time every day and getting into the public consciousness  there’s going to be a large percentage of people that are going to like that song because we do like what we’re familiar with. If we hear something and we become familiar with a song then we tend to like it. I mean that’s why Classic Rock Radio is bigger now than it ever has been. I mean people are listening to Led Zeppelin and Cream and all these 60’s and 70s bands and it’s not stopped. I mean we’re talking  50 years later and people are still listening to this.  I don’t think it’s (radio) as important as it used to be in the past but I still think it’s a very important tool.”

When asked if vinyl sales helped  bands  recover from the lost CD sales in the past years
“It helps a little bit. Let’s put it this way the record industry reached its peak in around 2000- 2002 and it used to be about a $50 billion industry every year. Now it’s about a five or six billion dollar industry, so it’s 1/10 the size of what it used to be in terms of an industry from the actual music .The other thing that’s weird is 70% of the revenue right now from music is from Classic Albums that already existed. From the 70s and 80s 60s  that’s where 70% of the revenue is from streaming and is a complete travesty in my opinion. I think it’s  horrible. I think (streaming)  did a horrible thing  in terms of the artist and the industry. I think it’s very destabilizing. Basically we don’t see any money from the music as a matter of fact. We even talk about it amongst ourselves we’re like well we’re gonna make an album. Why are we doing it ? We’re basically doing it because we love making music and we want to give our fans something new. We love our fans and we love the process of making music but I don’t know what we saw literally, I’m not going to say nothing from it but for the amount of time that we put into creating a record  we pretty much saw nothing from it. So I do think vinyl helped a little bit but if you look at the actual numbers and what we’ve lost in terms of what streaming has done. If you look at the music business on a graph you know it’s like a plane going down. When iTunes took off in around 2005 now all of a sudden instead of selling a CD you would sell one song for .99 cents so instantly your gross margin was cut down by 90%. And then  from streaming  now  everything’s just it’s even worse. if  you’re doing this for some other reason like you’re trying to get rich off of it I would suggest you not do it. I would suggest if you’re doing this because you love it and you love your fans and you love the art you know that’s great you know but that that’s why we’re doing it we’re not doing it to get rich.  Let’s say you have Spotify for 11 bucks (a Month) you can access every bit of music that exists on the planet. $11   and you can access absolutely everything under the sun. In the past  when we used to have to buy records I mean you would work hard you’d save up your money you’d buy a record you’d have a real connection with that record because you you invested into it.”

Stoner Rockers LADYMEN Release Heavy New Album “Los Desiertos del Futuro”

After a decade away from the studio, LADYMEN return with their long- awaited second album: “Los Desiertos del Futuro”. Composed of six songs, the number six symbolizes balance, awareness, and the ambivalence between fire and water, reflecting the deep, spiritual themes of this work.

Stream it here: https://open.spotify.com/intl-pt/album/2E210pCylNLKmkAuv4sfQg

The journey begins with the rebirth of “Fénix” and travels through various landscapes, ranging from the frenzy and aggression of “Sanguinario” to the calm and harmony of “Los Desiertos del Futuro”, the title track of this album. “Innecesariamente Necesario”, “Traicionado (a Fuego Lento)”, and “De Tierra y de Sal” complete this work, which internalizes existential conflicts and contrasts them with the power of redemption and resilience, while blending hard rock with punk, stoner, blues, and a heavy dose of psychedelia.

The production was handled by the band with the collaboration of Diego Guerra a.k.a. “Eddie Warboy”. The drums were recorded at URVN Studio by Rubén Sánchez. Post-production was done by Erik Monsonoís from Dark House Studio. They also featured the collaboration of Saverio Giandusa (Difuntos, Serbia) on keyboards and synthesizers. Artwork and ilustration by Samuel Macias “Serpiedad”.

LUNAR Unveil Emotional Lyric Video ‘Spring In My Step’ from Upcoming Album

Top 1st Row – Ryan Price – Bass, Alex Bosson – Drums * Middle 2nd Row – Connor McCray – Lead Guitar, Chandler Mogel – Clean Vocals * Bottom 3rd Row – Carlos Alvarez – Rhythm Guitar, Brian Lewis – Growl Vocals, Anthony Stahl – Keyboards

Sacramento, USA’s progressive metal outfit Lunar is set to release the lyric video for “Spring In My Step” to offer listeners another captivating glimpse into their upcoming concept album “Tempora Mutantur”, slated for release at the end of January 2025. The new release continues the band’s exploration of seasonal metaphors and personal transformation, promising a musical journey that blends intricate progressive metal with deeply introspective storytelling. Drummer Alex Bosson comments on the single:

“One of my personal favorite songs on the album. This song is more upbeat and about the good times we feel revitalized. When you’ve made it through a rough patch in your life and realize you’ve come out the other side. This song has some really fun moments musically and, I think, is one of the more “proggy” songs on this record.”

One of the more upbeat songs on the album, “Spring In My Step” delivers an awesome main riff and continues with positive melodies throughout. The track embodies the band’s approach to songwriting—creating music that is both technically complex and emotionally accessible, inviting listeners to find their own meanings within the layers of sound and lyrical metaphor.

The lyric video, along with the rest of the album, offers an emotional listening experience. Lots of ups and downs musically and lyrically dealing with the passing of time and the effects it has on us physically and mentally. Lunar is recommended for fans of Opeth, Caligula’s Horse, and Haken.

Listen to the single on Spotify – https://spoti.fi/3W3wzA7

Founded by drummer Alex Bosson (Helion Prime, Planeswalker) and Ryan Erwin who passed away in 2018, LUNAR continues in his memory. This fourth full-length “Tempora Mutantur” follows 2023’s “The Illusionist” and features a fresh lineup with the addition of guitarists Carlos Alvarez and Connor McCray (Vis Mystica) along with keyboardist Anthony Stahl plus album guests Wayne Ingram (Wildrun), Joe Gullace (Thank You Scientist) and Sam Vallen (Caligula’s Horse).

A collaboration of musical minds, and with anything LUNAR does; “Tempora Mutantur” is an emotional thematic listening experience with ups and downs musically and lyrically dealing with the passing of time and the effects it has on us physically and mentally.

“This album deals with something everyone can relate to and no one can escape: the passing of time. We get older, our perspective changes, and we gain some things, and lose others… sometimes the things and ones we love. And we struggle and fight along the way. This album deals with some of the highs and lows we deal with along this journey we all share. Hopefully, the fans will be able to resonate with it and find some solace and aid in their own experiences of time passing. I believe the songwriting has gotten stronger over the years. I think the songs are a bit more well-structured. But I think the overall sound of the band has remained pretty consistent over the years. The music is very “prog,” so it’s been diverse I think from day 1. Probably even more so now than it was at first.” adds Bosson.

Recommended for fans of Opeth, Caligula’s Horse, Haken, Tool, and Porcupine Tree, LUNAR’s “Tempora Mutantur” is due out January 31, 2025, from Saibot Reigns Records.

Items from BOB DYLAN’s Early Career as Portrayed in ‘A Complete Unknown’ Set for Auction January 18th

James Mangold’s film “A Complete Unknown” has reignited spirited discourse about Bob Dylan, the enigmatic artist who gave voice to a generation. With Timothée Chalamet in the role of the young Dylan, the film offers a glimpse into his early career, tracing it from folk troubadour to rock poet.

Coinciding with the Searchlight Pictures release is a treasure trove of Dylan memorabilia hitting the auction block in “Celebrating Bob Dylan: The Aronowitz Archive, T Bone Burnett, & More” auction event at the Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum on January 18, 2025, at 10:00 AM CST – providing a bridge to the era the film portrays. This convergence of cinematic representation and historical artifacts invites us into an even deeper exploration of Dylan’s legacy, connecting the film’s narrative with the tangible echoes of his past.

The forthcoming auction directly connects the dots to the film through the precious items preserved in the Al Aronowitz Archive. It features 60 items, 50 of these from  Aronowitz’s personal archive, including two pages containing three progressive typewritten drafts of the lyrics to “Mr. Tambourine Man” (estimate: $400,000-$600,000), an early Dylan oil painting from 1968 ($200,000-$300,000), a 1963 handbill from his first major headline performance at Town Hall in New York City ($1,500-$2,000), early vintage photographs, original sketches and much more. The auction also includes a 1983 Fender Telecaster made for and owned by Bob Dylan ($80,000-$120,000) and signed handwritten lyrics for “Blowin’ In The Wind” ($15,000-$20,000). Find a full list of items with photos and descriptions via Julien’s Auctions website. Watch the trailers for the auction HERE and HERE.

The collection offers connections to specific events and themes woven into the film’s narrative. The vintage photographs from Dylan’s 1961 recording sessions captured by the lens of Don Hunstein offer an intimate window into the nascent talent, and resonate with the film’s depiction of Dylan’s arrival in New York. Similarly, the 1962 press release bio mirrors the film’s exploration of his meteoric rise to fame and the “Blowin’ In The Wind” promo single harks back to Dylan’s emergence as a voice of social conscience, a theme that “A Complete Unknown” explores through his involvement in the Civil Rights movement.

Perhaps the most captivating item in the collection are the draft lyrics for “Mr. Tambourine Man.” These handwritten pages offer a glimpse into the alchemical process of songwriting. The film subtly alludes to the writing of this masterpiece, showcasing Dylan’s immersion in the bohemian counterculture of the time. These lyrics embody the very spirit of creative exploration that “A Complete Unknown” so beautifully captures.

Another highlight of the auction that connects the past and present is a one-of-one Ionic Original disc of Bob Dylan’s new studio recording of “The Times They Are A-Changin’” (estimate: $400,000-$600,000), from a special session with multi-Grammy winning producer T Bone Burnett. The auction marks the second public sale of an Ionic Original recording following “Blowin’ In The Wind” in 2022.

About the auction, Myles Aronowitz, son of Al, explains: “Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Mick Jagger, Jerry Garcia, Carole King… My Father was this incredible connector. He was much more than a journalist, he understood what these artists were trying to do. He didn’t just meet these cultural icons, he brought them together. He introduced Allen Ginsberg to Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan to The Beatles. My Father was the one who turned The Beatles on for the first time. He connected Jimi Hendrix with Miles Davis, Nico with Lou Reed. He wasn’t just a writer with a powerbase as a New York columnist; Al had this unique kind of magic. He made these introductions that went on to shape culture itself. It was more than power or influence—there was something truly magical about what he did. The collection represents my Father’s instinctive ability to identify and connect with greatness. Each item is evidence of this, and how with his magic, he literally brought you into the room!”

About the Ionic Original, T Bone Burnett explains, “Hearing Bob Dylan sing ‘The Times They Are A-Changin’’ sixty years after he wrote it is a moving experience. The times, have, in fact changed, and the listener can hear the gravity and the consequence of the sixty years of life that have passed since he first wrote and recorded the song. Although Bob’s earlier version of this song is, of course, a classic recording, to my way of listening, this Ionic Original is the definitive version of this indelible song.”

“Celebrating Bob Dylan: The Aronowitz Archive, T Bone Burnett, & More” goes beyond the acquisition of memorabilia, and offers a portal into the heart of Dylan’s world. By stringing together the chords of the film’s narrative with the market debut of these tangible artifacts, we gain a profound appreciation for the artist’s transformative journey. Whether you’re a lifelong Dylan devotee or a newcomer captivated by “A Complete Unknown,” register and bid on this archive collection from Al Aronowitz that presents an unparalleled opportunity to own a piece of music history and to embark on a deeper exploration of the enigmatic legacy of Bob Dylan – one that continues to inspire and challenge us decades later.

In honor of “Celebrating Bob Dylan,” a special exhibition showcasing highlights from the Al Aronowitz collection is on now through Friday, January 17. The auction will follow on January 18th at 10 a.m. CT from the Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum.
