Finnish black/death Metal band Luusäkki is set to release a self-titled debut album which will be out via Inverse Records on October 17th 2024. Statue in Uniform is the second single taken from the album and it’s available here: https://push.fm/fl/luusakki-statue
MS comments: ‘”Statue in Uniform” is the second single from Luusäkki’s upcoming self-titled debut album. The album was written and recorded in Helsinki in the fall of 2022. “Statue in Uniform” combines the dark tones of black metal with the fury of death metal. The song addresses the harsh reality of conflicts and aims to depict the inhuman effects of war as well as the cyclical nature of human suffering. The imagery paints a picture of lost souls and identities.”
Luusäkki is a Finnish one-man project combining black metal, death metal and ambient music. The unstable atmosphere of 2022 gave impetus to the creative process that gave birth to Luusäkki.
Line-up: Markus Sundquist – Guitars, bass, synths, programming, other instruments, vocals, composition, lyrics, mixing, mastering.
“Twilight” is the latest single from Danish/Faroese progressive metal collective IOTUNN. The epic new track comes off the band’s second full-length album, Kinship, set for release on October 25th through Metal Blade Records.
“Somehow this song is coherent, but it’s got lots of twists and turns and references within its own frame. It’s always very exciting to be in search of the perfect balance when there’s too many ingredients. Also, it’s a rocking song that’s going to be fun to play at concerts,” comments guitarist Jens Nicolai Gräs.
Guitarist Jesper Gräs further elaborates, “‘Twilight’ is all about energy. The fundamental main riff was written during the time right after [Motörhead’s] Lemmy [Kilmister] died and I wrote this to celebrate his legend and musical influence. From the get-go, it was about high speed, flow, and groove and with the creative process together with Jens Nicolai and later the full band, it evolved into soundscapes of atmosphere as we know it from the IOTUNN sound – combining the heavy metal with the atmospheres. Lots of Nordic touches to it; lots of epic-ness.”

IOTUNN‘s Kinship is a massive album arising from the primeval sea. It’s a mythological journey through eight tracks that span immense spheres both musically and lyrically, exploring the deep roots of human nature, its connection and disconnection with everything and everyone, and how our choices have always defined ourselves and the lives lived.
The album shows IOTUNN unfold their musical worlds to their fullest scales to date which has been the dream achievement throughout the years creating the album.
“In my mind, Kinship is a grand work of heavy metal art, one that I am very proud to have taken part in creating,” notes drummer Bjørn Wind Andersen. “Musically, it encompasses so many different colors and emotions. It is, in many ways, the music to which I’ve always dreamt of contributing drums. It is the finest accomplishment this far, for me personally and for the band.”
Bassist Eskil Rask adds, “Kinship marks another monumental milestone for IOTUNN and for myself as a bass player. Our shift to more atmospheric and organic songs has led me to discover new approaches to my instrument and in some areas to reinvent myself as a bass player. I can’t wait to release this record and bring it to the live stages.”
The artwork and art pieces of Kinship were created by the ink and graphite illustrator and artist, Saprophial (Hammers Of Misfortune), with the design and layout created by art director Brian Ames at Metal Blade Records. Kinship was mixed and mastered by Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios Denmark (Arch Enemy, Katatonia, The Black Dahlia Murder, Volbeat, Týr).
Finnish Jotungrav is taking its next step of its musical journey with the new single Ulven, a nine-minute progressive epic of Nordic mythology. Ulven is released on September 10th 2024 via Inverse Records and it’s giving a taste of the musical aspirations of the band.
The song showcases the ferocity of early 2010’s folk/black metal with a symphonic edge, as well as a love for long and versatile compositions. As a product molded by the modern day metal era, Jotungrav likes to incorporate various progressive elements in their music, which can be heard in the constantly evolving dynamics of Ulven. The song functions as a warm up for the band, which is composing new material and preparing for the recording of its next release. The song will be accompanied by a lyric video, which will give a glimpse into the animalistic horrors that dwell within man.
The band comments: “Ulven is an atmospherically versatile song; in it you can hear everything from the tremolo guitar riffs characteristic of black metal to atmospheric passages accompanied by acoustic instruments. The atmosphere of the song is sometimes serene, sometimes furious. The song’s lyrics are from a darker, albeit philosophical, end. They reflect on people’s pent-up xenophobia and hostile tribalism. Ulven (wolf in Finnish, referring to the Fenris wolf) serves as a metaphor for the human tendency to see enemies everywhere, as well as for cowards who without empathy sacrifice their own ties to others in the name of self-interest. This is how the song connects the problems that torment people from ancient times as well as a modern point of view. Even though the ancient Scandinavian mythology only functions as a thematic mirror for human characteristics, Ulven’s lyrics contain both direct and indirect references to Odin, the reigning god of Asgård, who spent his life until the last day in fear of the prophecy of the Jotun wolf that would kill him. However, fear of death cannot be likened to hate in Odin’s case: the god of knowledge would meet his death spear in hand on the back of his horse, whether he wanted it or not. However, not all ordinary people are blessed with such might and stoic fortitude. The worst people succumb to obsessive paranoia in the face of chaos, arming themselves with the power of anger.”
Jotungrav is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Matias Stenman, which incorporates elements of black metal and folk metal within a progressive metal framework. The project got its initial start in 2015, but most of the material composed back then ended up being discarded. It was in the summer of 2022 when the single Drängen was finished when Jotungrav finally materialized, with the help of fellow Sargassus members Matias Rokio, who provided percussive arrangements to the song, as well as Teemu Leskinen, who took on the mixing and mastering duties. Initially Jotungrav was a slowly progressing musical effort, but with time the project managed to accumulate enough material for a second single, Ulven, while working on more material for future releases. Both musically and thematically Jotungrav draws inspiration from early 2000s–2010s viking/pagan metal scene and mythology. The lyrics have a philosophical and symbolic focus on humanity. The songs evolve into vast soundscapes while maintaining a raw and genuine feel to them, paying homage to the early days of folk metal.
