The underground has lost their mind over Defeated Sanity. With each repugnant chapter in the band’s 30-year history, these technical lunatics have discovered dizzying ways to slam old-school death metal on its deformed head. Heck, they even recorded a split LP with themselves.

Having already cracked the Billboard chart with their jazz-infused chaos, Defeated Sanity are now bringing back more of the sheer brutality that long-time fans have come to crave with Chronicles of Lunacy. The new single off their upcoming seventh album still delights prog-minded fiends with its many twisted turns, but by the time it’s finished, “Temporal Disintegration” will have everyone clawing their way into the pit.

Chronicles of Lunacy comes out November 22 on Season of Mist. Pre-order & Pre-save at https://orcd.co/defeatedsanitythecroniclesoflunacy

Chronicles of Lunacy punches you right in the face. Lead single “The Odour of Sanctity” comes pouring out of the speakers in a never-ending stream of filth. It’s just as putrid, but “Temporal Disintegration” is more of a hulking — if not, slightly more refined — breed of foul beast.

“We like to think of this song as the andante on the album”, Defeated Sanity says.

“Temporal Disintegration” still finds time to shred, but the song’s chunkier riffs chew through the mix with all the crushing weight of a slow and painful death. “Chronicles isn’t as tough on the brain as the last two albums”, says new guitarist Vaughn Stoffey. “It’s rawer and more straightforward, which gets back to what fans love about Psalms of the Moribund“.

Of course, Defeated Sanity are still steered by the mad genius who sits on their drum throne. Even when he’s blasting away at his snare, it always seems like Lille Gruber is juggling several different furious tempos. He never stops throwing “Temporal Disintegration” for a loop, shifting between guttural groove to hard bopping drum fills without missing a beat.

“Lille’s drumming is just ridiculous”, says Jacob Schmidt. Having held down Defeated Sanity’s low end for the past two decades, Schmidt shares the same mind’s eye for rhythmic oddities as the band’s creator. After coming to its harrowing conclusion, “Temporal Disintegration” spawns into a creeping, crawling bass solo. “He’s the face of the franchise, so we’re never going to abandon those head-scratching moments that set Defeated Sanity apart”.

But Defeated Sanity always have a method to their madness. “Each song on Chronicles deals with a different form of mental corruption”, vocalist Josh Welshman says. As depicted by its cryptic lyric video, “Temporal Disintegration” reads as if ripped from the inner monologue of a senseless killer. “Apathy transforms – into lunacy”,  Welshman growls as the band descend into the album’s most sickly and slam-heavy breakdown.

“We love experimenting”, says Gruber. “But we realized that some of our oldest fans might have gotten lost after our last couple of albums. With Chronicles of Lunacy, we wanted to get back to more neck-snapping brutality”.

6. A Patriarchy Perverse (4:16)

DEFEATED SANITY is unequivocally one of the most unique, boundary-pushing and crucial bands in the history of extreme death metal. Their music is as technically coherent as it is mind-bending and memorable. Endlessly replay-able and full of discovery, their maze of riffs and musical passages is inspired by infamous classic bands in the extreme metal genre, while also heavily steeped in jazz and progressive classical elements.

The band consists of four members. They’re led by drummer Lille Gruber, who’s the son of deceased co-founding member Wolfgang Teske. Gruber is joined by bandmates Jacob Schmidt (bass), Josh Welshman (vocals) and Vaughn Stoffey (guitar).

As well as being the drummer of Defeated Sanity, Gruber is the multi- instrumental, songwriting mastermind behind the band’s deep and compelling catalogue of songs and compositions. He possesses a bag of tricks seen nowhere else in the genre, and a musical prowess which is on full display throughout their new album Chronicles of Lunacy.

“We love experimenting”, explains drummer and founding member Lille Gruber. “But we realized that some of our oldest fans might have gotten lost after our last couple of albums. With the new one, we wanted to focus more on neck-snapping brutality”.

Chronicles of Lunacy punches you right in the face. Press play and “Amputationsdrang” already has you pinned to the mat beneath its non-stop blasts. Get comfortable, too, because Defeated Sanity don’t let the album up for air until the very end of Track 4. But turns out, acting like knuckle-dragging cavemen isn’t so easy for a band that has a Mensa-level maestro like Gruber at the controls.

At the tender age of six, Lille Gruber picked up heavy guitar and drums. Inspired by killer American BDM bands like Disgorge, Monstrosity and Brodequin, the German wunderkind recorded the band’s first demo alongside his father, Wolfgang Teske. Since Wolfgang’s passing in 2008, Gruber has composed every foul note of Defeated Sanity. Whether he’s hammering his snare, pinging between cymbals or riding a colossal groove, The Chronicles of Lunacy flows like a never-ending stream of filth.

“Lille’s drumming is just ridiculous”, Jacob Schmidt says. Schmidt – who toured with Obscura behind Cosmogenesis – joined as the other half of Defeated Sanity’s chaotic rhythm section for the band’s beloved second album. His nimble, belching bass give the new album’s lead single “The Odour of Sanctity” a dizzying bounce. “He’s the face of the franchise, so we’re never going to abandon those head-scratching moments that set Defeated Sanity apart”.

Indeed, Chronicles of Lunacy isn’t Defeated Sanity for dummies. Heck, the lyrics are wrapped up in the twisted ways that delusions can rot the human psyche. This heady concept was made flesh by none other than Jon Zig. Drawn in painstaking detail by his wicked right hand, the album’s cover shows that the birth of some ideas look an awful lot like a gory and sex-crazed nativity scene.

“Each song on Chronicles deals with a different form of mental corruption”, Josh Welshman says”.  “Odor” stinks of religious fanaticism. “A Patriarchy Perverse” cracks open the mind of co-ed killer Ed Kemper, while “Extrinsically Enraged” practically foams at the mouth with squealing hammer-ons.  “That one’s more literal”, says Welshman with a hearty laugh. “It’s about contracting rabies”. If it weren’t for Disposal of the Dead / Dharmata, then Defeated Sanity would’ve chewed through as many vocalists as they have albums, but after a brutal showing on their last one, Welshman is back with more guttural vengeance. His growls ooze from the pit of his gut on “Temporal Disintegration”, stomped out like the innards of a cockroach by the gravity-defying slams.

While it still hits from every odd angle, Chronicles of Lunacy does draw a jagged red line back to Defeated Sanity’s brutal origins. After all, the band now share a label with their namesake. In true, DS fashion, the first song written for this album was “Heredity Violated”, a headbanging grand finale that never stops chugging. “This album isn’t as tough on the brain as the last two”, says new guitarist Vaughn Stoffey, whose chunky riffs whip “Accelerating the Rot” into the fastest song in the band’s canon. “It’s rawer and more straightforward, which gets back to what fans love about Psalms of the Moribund“.

To dig up the sheer brutality that long-time fans have come to crave, Defeated Sanity returned to Thousand Cave Studios. New York City’s most vile underground hotspot also served as the excavation site for the Billboard-charting The Sanguinary Impetus, which shoveled a fresh layer of dirt over the “polished” production of Passages into Deformity. But the band encouraged producer Colin Marston to get down and dirty with Chronicles of Lunacy. “We still wanted some of the high fidelity that you hear on modern death metal records”, Schmidt says, “but this album has the same crushing low-end as Psalms or Chapters of Repugnance“.

The band execute this two-headed approach to monstrous effect on “Condemned to Vascular Famine”. At just under six minutes, the song delivers the longest ass beating on Chronicles of Lunacy. At times, all four members sound like they’re climbing up the walls in separate asylums, but after slipping in a brief nod to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the band come slamming down into the album’s ugliest breakdown.

“That’s one of our favorites”, the band says. “It lands at a crossroad of the DS sound that we ended up with on Chronicles of Lunacy. Even though it gets pretty fucking weird at times, there’s still an emphasis on heavy, straight-up slamming”

None of their albums are ever going to follow a straight line, but on Chronicles of Lunacy, Defeated Sanity return to sheer brutality.

On 4 October, The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara (TCOMAS) will unveil their new single and official video for “Waves”. The track is taken from the band’s forthcoming new album, ORIGINS, which is due to be released on November 1, 2024. The album is now available to pre-save as well as digital pre-order on The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara’s official website.

Speaking about their new single and video for “Waves”, Daphne Ang and Andrea Papi shared,
“This song is about the unpredictability of life, and how quickly we can transition from safety and comfort to peril without noticing.”

The single is set to launch with an official video produced by the duo’s visual and video production entity, TCOMAS Studio.

“Waves” is preceded by the release of several singles from the new album. The first single, “Mysterium Tremendum”, blended death metal, poetry, and classical orchestration, and was also accompanied by an animated music video. This was followed by “Feed the Beast”, a progressive rock and metal anthem delving into the theme of addiction and recovery, “Bite the Bullet”, a hip-hop/metal song featuring UK-based Italian rapper, Mr Meuri, and most recently, the single and video for “It goes”.

ORIGINS continues The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara’s impressive streak of self-produced efforts, and will be the duo’s third studio album in four years.

Providing a glimpse on what listeners can expect from the new album, Daphne Ang and Andrea Papi shared,
“Origins is about our personal experience of mysteries, rituals, true friendships, bad mentors, addiction, and death. This album is deeply personal, and is written from the heart. We dedicate it to the people who are still here, and for those we have lost. You’ll find many unexpected twists and turns throughout the album. Such is the chaos and unpredictability of life.”

The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara’s new album, ORIGINS, will be released worldwide on November 1, 2024, — visit ffm.to/origins-album to pre-save. ORIGINS is now available for digital pre-order purchase as a digital download  — visit tcomas.com/origins to pre-order.

HAMMERFALL: Joacim Cans on the label ‘Power Metal’ And New Album “Avenge The Fallen”

In an interview with Metal Hammer, HammerFall frontman Joacim Cans recently clarified that the band does not identify with the frequently used label “Power Metal.” Cans explained that the term ‘Power Metal’ is ” the American way of naming traditional heavy metal, especially if it’s not made in the 80s.” He emphasized: “We are as traditional as can be. I think heavy metal is enough because, within the boundaries of heavy metal, you can do so many things.”

Avenge The Fallen: HammerFall’s new album

Speaking about the new album ‘Avenge The Fallen’, Cans said: “Do we want to be a band who releases new music just for the sole reason of getting out on the road again or do we want to keep pushing and challenging ourselves? In times when people have less and less attention span, we still think in the form of full-length albums. A few good songs don’t make a strong album. A strong album comes from an album full of great songs and that’s what we’re delivering with ‘Avenge The Fallen’.”

JUDAS PRIEST Announce ‘Artist-Approved Remixed + Remastered’ Version of “Rocka Rolla”

Posted by tarjavirmakari on September 10, 2024
Posted in: News. Leave a comment

1974 – L to R: KK Downing, John Hinch, Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, Ian Hill

“It’s great to look back and see our future unfurl — from little metal acorns mighty metal oaks do grow. One small step for metal, one giant leap for metalkind — a lifelong metal journey began with these songs. This album lit the eternal metal flame — as real and fresh as ever five decades on” — Rob Halford

In 1974 before the eternal metal flame was ever lit – Judas Priest were simply 5 young musicians in their 20’s – Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, Ian Hill, KK Downing and John Hinch – from the Black Country an area of working-class towns in England – excited to have signed a record deal.

With limited funds, the band recorded during the less expensive night shift hours. The album Rocka Rolla was born during these sessions, under the guidance of producer Roger Bain who was brought in by the label and who had previously produced Black Sabbath.

Judas Priest learnt over time how to record an album – and the experience of working in a professional recording studio helped prepare them for the next album to come – one of the most definitive and foundational heavy metal albums of all time – Sad Wings of Destiny

But with Rocka Rolla the band was not there for the mixing, the mastering process or any final approvals — they didn’t have a say when it was finished or how it ultimately sounded. Although the band felt positive about how the songs sounded in the studio, they were particularly disappointed when they received a finished copy of the album in the mail to listen to for the first time…..

“I took the record…  and I put the needle onto the groove and I sat back. And I just slowly started to deflate, deflate.” said Rob Halford. “I was so disappointed with the way it was sounding… All of us were – we’d all worked so hard to get to this place. And now this music that we know when we play live is roaring – the heavy metal is roaring even in those early primitive days – none of that was coming out of the speakers”

The band never had a future say in Rocka Rolla in the intervening decades — the re-releases and early-era compilations… but that was about to change…..

During Judas Priest’s 50 Heavy Metal Years tour in 2022, something remarkable was happening behind the scenes. The label that originally signed Judas Priest in 1974, Gull Records and its owner David Howells, decided to sell the masters and publishing rights for the two albums the label owned, Rocka Rolla and Sad Wings of Destiny — and he contacted Glenn Tipton’s music publisher, Michael Closter of Reach Music Publishing.

After discussing this opportunity and collaborating with Judas Priest’s manager Jayne Andrews, a compelling offer from Reach Music was made to Gull Records. Terms were accepted. An acquisition agreement was prepared, and after almost 50 years from the release of these albums, Reach Music and its label Exciter Records – in partnership with Judas Priest, was now the owner of Rocka Rolla and Sad Wings of Destiny.

The first order of business was to retrieve the original multitrack tapes from storage (which miraculously still existed and kept in usable condition for all these decades) — and to begin the process of resurrecting Rocka Rolla from these multitrack recordings…..

With the task of delving back into time and putting the tapes of Rocka Rolla back on the recording studio console, Judas Priest put their full faith in Tom Allom — known in the Judas Priest world for producing the iconic British Steel and Screaming For Vengeance albums among many others.

As Tom Allom stated, “What we did with the multitracks is quite unusual, to completely remix an album from that era, from scratch. So to clarify what we’re doing, we’re not adding anything musically. We’re not re-recording any of the musical parts…  We’re remixing them, rebalancing them using the technology we have, the modern tools we have now, to sonically upgrade them, and make them sound more powerful.”

The results of this remixed version are now available for posterity — the artist-approved version of Rocka Rolla is finally here for fans to add to their Judas Priest collection.

Rob Halford: “I’m just thrilled… because it just goes to show you when you get an expert involved in a project, it’s likely that you have a second chance. And I think that Tom Allom is giving us a second chance here with the way that a lot of the elements were lost in Rocka Rolla. And it’s also nice, like a really nice feeling, especially to attach it to what will be a 50th anniversary moment. It’s just a beautiful feeling.”

Glenn Tipton: “This is where it all started for us and 50 years later, we have a great re-mixed and re-mastered version of the original…and the band are still going strong!”

Ian Hill: “Recorded during nighttime sessions to save costs, over a few weeks in June and July 1974, on a shoestring budget, Rocka Rolla was always going to have its flaws! But walking into my local record store and seeing it on a shelf amongst all your idol’s records was the proudest feeling in the world, and I thought, ‘Whatever happens now, nothing can change that!’ Now re-mixed by Tom Allom and re-mastered, Rocka Rolla has finally got the production it deserved!”

KK Downing: “At last! This! The first Judas Priest album can be listened to and enjoyed in the way it was always intended to be!”
