Canadian rockers Lions in the Street release their new single “Moving Along” on Friday 16 August 2024. The single is available on all streaming platforms LISTEN HERE. Watch the music video HERE.

“Moving Along” is taken from the band’s upcoming album Moving Along released Friday 8 November 2024. Pre-order the digital edition of the album HERE.  Pre-order the album in CD and vinyl formats HERE.

Comprising the Brothers Kinnon (Chris on vocals and guitar; Jeff on drums), riff-master Sean Casey (guitar), and classically educated bass player Enzo Figliuzzi, the Canadian/California-based band has played with everybody from garage legends like the Dirtbombs to arena stars Kings of Leon, making SXSW best-of lists numerous times, and in between hanging out with the Rolling Stones’ legendary manager Andrew Loog Oldham. But putting integrity first had a cost: obscurity.

Lions in the Street began their career by signing and then walking away from the troubled TVT Records (NIN, Pitbull, Little Jon), Nickelback’s 604 Records (Carly Rae Jepson), and legendary manager Allen Kovac (Motley Crue, The Cars, Blondie, The Bee Gees), earning them a spot on the music industry’s blacklist. Years in the wilderness resulted—working as a garbageman for almost a decade, surviving cancer, serious workplace injuries, and almost deadly car accidents, and going back to school.

Yet, despite experiencing the best and worst of the of old music business—from hanging out with Todd Rundgren, Bob Ezrin, and R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, to seeing an A&R guy almost fired just for going to see them play—the band somehow kept going, releasing music piecemeal.

For example, Lions in the Street released an EP in 2013 on British legend Sandy Roberton’s label. Roberton ran Blue Horizon, the English label that launched the 60s British Blues rock movement with John Mayall, Fleetwood Mac, and Rory Gallagher.

“Anyone who’s ever worn out a copy of the Stones’ It’s Only Rock & Roll or The Black Crowes’ Shake Your Moneymaker is going to find LOTS to love. This is rock with a direct line back to the nasty blues, jump tunes, and country boogie that birthed the whole damn genre. Untamed, direct, and bristling with hairy masculinity, Lions in the Street play rock like the cause it is… that is when you do it right.” – Jambase

Now the streaming platforms revolution has given Lions in the Street a new life an audience, allowing them to release largely-unheard music—finally finished and remixed/remastered.

LITS’ upcoming album Moving Along captures their trademark swing and swagger. The title track, mixed by Rick Parker (Beck, BRMC, Scott Weiland), is a menacing, harmonica-driven vamp “worthy of Mick and Keith at their sticky fingered best” (Jambase.com).  “Moving Along” is also the lead track in the upcoming Paramount film “Cassino In Ischia”, starring Prison Break’s Dominic Purcell.

Never to rest on their laurels, Lions in the Street are also putting the finishing touches on a live album and a record they made with multi-Grammy-Award winning producer Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Greta Van Fleet, Brandi Carlile, Rival Sons).

Moving Along*
Relentless locomotive groove and harmonica with a message of resilience. Getting up after you’re knocked down, again and again. “When I was poor, I was a harder man I tell you. Worked 47 hours a week.  But with holes in my shoes, I didn’t have no blues.  Now I’m in an awful place.”

*Featured in upcoming Paramount film Cassino in Ischia starring Prison Break’s Dominic Purcell.

Mine Ain’t Yours
A fierce rock’n’roller with heart-on-its-sleeve Stones/Rod Stewart and the Faces influences, this song’s about standing up for yourself when people take something that doesn’t belong to them.  “That isn’t how you make it. Mine ain’t yours for taking.”

Walking Back To You
A southern rock jam a la Allmans, Derek and Dominoes, and Delaney & Bonnie, this is a song about forgiveness.  Sometimes people are good to you even when you don’t deserve it.  The outro guitar and piano sound like they could have been taken from a lost Layla session.

Gold Pour Down
A short, up-tempo rocker with R&B horns over top of a chugging guitar groove, this song encourages people to stay hopeful, faithful, and positive, and to always let the good prevail even when things seem hopeless.

All For Your Love
A modern take on Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, this is mid-tempo, minor electric blues rock with edge.  A song about both despair and sacrifice.

Lady Blue
This wistful ballad would fit on a Skynyrd or Eagles album.  A classic northern take on a southern rock, a la Neil Young or the Band.  A song about regret, with organ swirls, languid vintage guitar tones, and a James Burton-inspired guitar solo setting the tone.

Waiting On A Woman
A saxophone solo over top of a guitar riff that’s all Keef attitude—say no more!

Already Gone
A Chuck Berry by-way-of Johnny Thunders stomper, this features a half-time chorus that invokes Rod Stewart and the Faces at their sloppy, countrified best.

Shangri La
Vancouver might be the world’s rainiest city.  Try spending months in sunny Los Angeles making a record then coming back to 40 straight days of rain in “Shangri-La.”  The instant-classic guitar riff that starts the song grows like a ’70 big-block Camaro.

Hey, Hey Arlene
Another Chuck Berry and rockabilly-inspired throwback to 50s rock’n’roll, but when you grow up listening to the first Clash album.

Truer Now
Pedal steel and acoustic guitars, with a chorus that invokes Zeppelin III influences.

You’re Gonna Lose
Hey, you can fight a garbage man, but you’re gonna lose! As mean a guitar riff as anything since the James Gang, and with an outro Albert King-inspired jam that will keep the Cream fans happy!

Tanith released their latest album Voyage in April last year via Metal Blade. You can stream the album, watch videos and purchase copies from here.

The album was recorded and mastered on 24-track analog tape and has never been digitized from recording to pressing. Also, fans will recognize Tippins from NWOBHM legend Satan.

ABOUT TANITH:
There is perhaps no band keeping the spirit and sound of ’70s hard rock and heavy metal alive more so than Tanith.

Formed in 2017, the band embraced that era wholeheartedly, resulting in 2019’s aptly titled In Another Time, which instantly earned cult status and put them on the map. Now, they return with Voyage, picking up where they left off and once again demonstrating their mastery when it comes to this niche. “I wanted more of the same but different in some marginal way,” explains vocalist/guitarist Russ Tippins (also of Satan). “Voyage is the sound of the universe speaking to mankind through the medium of Tanith. Or, if you like, twin-guitar heavy rock with dual singers which, if you grew up in the 1970s, will make you want to bounce over to the nearest record store. On a space hopper.”

While their debut came together easily, this time around there were hurdles to overcome, first and foremost the COVID-19 lockdown, which geographically split up the band, Tippins living in the UK while vocalist/bassist Cindy Maynard and drummer Keith Robinson dwelt in Brooklyn. Once life finally returned to “normal” and they were ready to record, they were hit by another bombshell with guitarist Charlie Newton abruptly bowing out of the band the day before tracking began.

“Speaking as one part of a two-guitar band, it felt like trying to fly with one wing,” says Tippins. “It happened so suddenly we were dumbstruck. I guess we sat around for a few days thinking he was sure to walk through the door at any moment. But soon enough we realized we’d have to try to find a way to make this record without Charlie and I’m not just talking about laying down his lines. It’s about the shared dream we had with him. The conviction he brought to that dream. The four-way belief now reduced to three.”

Returning to Brooklyn’s Excello Recording and engineer Hugh Pool – the same combination used for tracking In Another Time – the band produced the album themselves, with Pool mixing. The sessions were a fun time for Tanith, again recording to tape rather than digital and utilizing vintage amps and speakers to find the best possible sounds for the instruments. “Just having the time every day all day to be in the music was a big deal and all of our energy went into this project even after leaving the studio,” says Maynard. “We were thinking and breathing the music, constantly working on parts and ideas. We came in well prepared overall, and that gave us time to try out different sounds for different parts to get just the thing we were looking for.” Given that they established themselves as a twin-guitar band on their debut they also brought in an extra player, Andee Blacksugar, best known for touring with Peter Murphy and as a member of KMFDM, now also a member of Blondie, who Robinson had played with before.

With the record fully realized, the band are eager for people to hear it, and they are confident that it is worth taking the time to listen to it – and experience it – in all its old school glory. Tippins says, “I can think of only two other rock bands in the entire world right now that records onto 24-track analog tape. If all you’ve ever known is digitally produced music you really need to listen to Voyage on vinyl and experience the difference. And I’m not talking about vinyl pressed from masters recorded on Pro Tools. At no point from tracking to pressing has any of the music on Voyage been digitized. It will open your eyes.”

Vocalist Adam Gilley says about the song: ” ‘Light It Up’ is a great live song with all the elements needed to make it a heavy hitter. It’s about the dismantling of a corrupt kingdom imploding from the inside out. Exposing the truths that lie behind closed doors and giving a voice back to the people.“

REPENTANCE is promoting its sophomore album, “The Process Of Human Demise”, which came out last September via Noble Demon and is available to listen to and to purchase here: https://music.nobledemon.com/process.

Founded in 2018 by former SOIL and DIRGE WITHIN guitarist Shaun Glasss, REPENTANCE is a primal aggressive metal band; laden thick with heavy slabs of groove mesh that bleed intensity. Faroese/Danish GRAVA Announce New Album “The Great White Nothing”

Posted by metalshockfinland on August 16, 2024
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: GRAVA. Leave a comment

GRAVA will release their ominous sophomore album, “The Great White Nothing”, on September 27th 2024 via Aesthetic Death (CD), Vinyltroll Records (LP) and Evil Noise (MC).

The first single, “Decimate”, is now streaming HERE.

The Faroese/Danish trio’s debut album, “Weight of a God” (2022), showcased a violent yet atmospheric type of sludge metal that was simultaneously raw in its execution and disciplined in terms of songwriting. Its follow-up continues in the same vein while adding a touch of nuance and depth to the vicious soundscape. Like its predecessor, the album was produced by Troels Damgaard Holm and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege.

Though not a concept album, the album kicks off with two tracks (“Erebus” and “White Thresher”) that revolve around the same event: the tragic Franklin Expedition, which in 1845 ventured to the northernmost Arctic to explore the Northwest Passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The expedition was a disaster; both ships (HMS Erebus and HMS Terror) were lost, and all 128 crew members perished in the great white nothing to which the title and cover refer.

Throughout the album, GRAVA expand their lyrical universe, and the bleak sludge metal is accompanied by tales of a heartbreaking execution of a Swedish nobleman in 1707 (“Breaker”), a tragic train accident in the outskirts of Copenhagen in 1897 (“Mangled”), and a soldier’s final chaotic moments in one of the countless muddy trenches of World War I (“Bayonet”).

Just like on their debut album, GRAVA do not attempt to tell stories from A to Z but instead attempt to capture moments of death as seen through the eyes of the dying. The effect is a musical and lyrical drama that appears fragmented and intense but also surprisingly disciplined in terms of songwriting. In a genre often characterized by long songs, GRAVA never lose grip on their compositions, and although “The Great White Nothing” is full of interesting musical ideas, the tracks rarely extend far beyond the three-minute mark.

Tracklist:

1. Erebus
2. White Thresher
3. Decimate
4. Breaker
5. The Fall
6. Mangled
7. Bayonet
8. Ceasefire
9. Hinterlands

Line-up:

Casper Axilgård: Drums
Niels Asger Svensson: Vocals, bass
Atli Brix Kamban: Vocals, guitar

ALICE IN CHAINS Announce 15th Anniversary Reissue of “Black Gives Way to Blue”

Craft Recordings celebrates the 15th anniversary of Alice In Chains‘ seminal 2009 album, Black Gives Way to Blue, with a special vinyl reissue. The LP, out-of-print since its original release and a long-sought treasure for hard rock devotees, will arrive on September 27th and is available for pre-order today. In addition to the wide 2-LP release, fans can also pick up the album on three limited edition color pressings: “Black Widow” (available exclusively through the Alice In Chains store), “Black Smoke” (via the Craft Recordings store), and “Electric Smoke” (available at Revolver).

Black Gives Way to Blue is Alice In Chains’ fourth studio album, first released on September 29th, 2009. The project marks a significant moment in the band’s history, being their first record to feature William DuVall sharing vocal and guitar duties with founding member Jerry Cantrell, alongside bassist Mike Inez and drummer/founding member Sean Kinney.

Upon release, Black Gives Way to Blue was an instant smash hit, debuting at No.5 on the Billboard 200 and achieving Gold certification from the RIAA by May 2010. It includes singles “Your Decision,” “Lesson Learned,” “Check My Brain,” and “A Looking in View,” plus the poignant title track “Black Gives Way to Blue,” which features a guest performance from Elton John on piano. This song, a heartfelt tribute to late frontman Layne Staley, captures the band’s process in coming to terms with their loss while finding a path forward. Both “A Looking in View” and “Check My Brain” were GRAMMY Award nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Additionally, Black Gives Way to Blue won Revolver‘s Golden Gods Award for Album of the Year in 2010.

Consequence praised Black Gives Way To Blue as “11 songs that will remind listeners of why Alice was and is so vital to the hard rock scene,” while Blabbermouth described the album as achieving “a newfound level of clarity and humanity that only comes from putting everything [in] the past where it belongs; this could mark the beginning of a new era of stellar music from the band that broke through the grunge barrier and redefined modern rock.”

Despite the near unanimous acclaim, the band felt apprehension in pursuing new music after the tragic death of founding frontman Layne Staley. In a 2009 interview with Billboard, the band discussed the delicate balance between honoring their beloved band member and continuing to evolve the group’s sound in new directions. “It took a lot to get through this process and to even take the chance, and stand-up and risk,” Jerry Cantrell said.

DuVall added: “I think initially people came [with] arms crossed, sort of hoping against hope. I hear that a lot. I’m not trying to do a Layne. One of the things I loved about him was how individual he was. He was just being himself, so that’s what I do.”

Cantrell also reflected on that era in a 2024 interview with Metal Hammer, sharing details about the recording process, which took place at Studio 606 in LA, owned by the band’s friend Dave Grohl. Cantrell explained that the new chapter of Alice In Chains was a pure artistic pursuit of creating excellent music: “There was no master plan, despite what people think,” he continues. “This felt right, so we did the next thing, and then the next thing… It’s more than just making music and it always has been. We’ve been friends a long time. We’re not doing this to please anybody. It had to be OK from here,” he says, pointing to his chest.

Now, 15 years on, the band still feels deeply connected to Black Gives Way to Blue, which signaled a significant turning point in their legendary career. All these years later, the album remains an important touchstone for the group and their millions of devoted fans. Blending heavy grunge with pummeling, unrelenting hard rock, the album was both a tribute to Staley’s impact on the band and a map for moving forward.
