“Life’s Grand Delusion” is the debut album by the Malta-based alternative/melodic metal outfit DAMAGED & CO. The full-length is composed of eleven tracks (including one instrumental), written in four years, showcasing different influences from metalcore, dark/symphonic metal, and alternative metal. What makes “Life’s Grand Delusion” so brilliant and unique is the band’s ability to make every song a gem, with a clear identity, and a straight message. The songs are far from being “technical” but shine for being written by the band as a whole. Thanks to hard collective work, the sound and the lyrics of each song are intimately connected, both in the mood and in the meaning. The lyrics usually deal with existential issues: life, death, the afterlife, and anything in between, and how we, as individuals deal with pain tragedy, addiction, anger, persecution, loss, and finding a purpose in life. As a reflection, the album’s atmosphere is melancholic and bitter. There is no place for innocence, or “naive positivism”. Time is limited, we have to grow up and take a stand, because life is hard and, when we are deprived of love, it becomes a perennial grave. Like a photographer, who portrays reality for what it is, DAMAGED & CO. is thirsty for Clarity and Truth (a word that comes back several times during the album), without pretending to take the world on one’s shoulders to revolutionize it.

From a lyrical perspective, the first single release deals with the anger and frustration towards the status quo. It can be read as an allegory of governmental resistance and frustration with peers accepting the status quo, however, according to Ruff Majik it is more specifically aimed at the con-men and grifters in the local South African scene. As the band tells us:

“Right out the gate, we need to get some stuff off our chest. So, this song goes out to our local music industry promoters/suits/businessmen/naysayers that think they rule the world and shit gold. This is us drawing the line in the sand and throwing down the gauntlet – run up, we’re ready.

The scene is amazing, the bands are trying their best to make something good happen, and these greedy goblins are actively trying to destroy what we’re building. So you think you’re the music biz messiah? Get f#@cked!”

Kicking the vibe back to a sepia-toned era where bell-bottoms and fuzzed-out bass were de rigueur, the ‘Majik lads take a well-known template and drench it with their unique attitude and stoner-esque sensibilities.

The horned infant known as Ruff Majik emerged from the primordial ooze when the band moved from the historical town of Lydenburg in 2012 to the capital city of Pretoria, where they honed their craft for a few years before finally entering the studio to record for the first time. In 2024 and while they are currently gearing up for the September-release of their Moth Eater on Sound Of Liberation Records, Ruff Majik released a number of EP’s and three lauded albums to date, not to mention the megaton of local and international touring.

All the requisite ‘Majik trope boxes are ticked in thick, bold permanent marker – sludgy, distorted riffs, vast landscapes of sonic abandon, dark imagery that perfectly complements the delicious cacophony, and tasty sound bites that add infinite swathes of colour. This is what is expected from the band, their signature sound and one that never fails.

The international Melodic Heavy Metal Band TIMELESS FAIRYTALE has signed a record deal with Swedish record label ViciSolum Productions.

The band’s debut album “A Story to Tell” is set for release on September 13 and will be a feast for fans of bands such as Royal Hunt, Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Masterplan and Scorpions. A first taste will be presented with the single “New Dawn” on 5th of July.

TIMELESS FAIRYTALE’s guitarist and songwriter Luca Sellitto had the following to say about the signing: “First of all, on behalf of all Timeless Fairytale’s members, I’d like to thank CEO Thomas Hörnkvist and all the staff at Vicisolum Productions for their trust and investment in us. Joining such a well-established and well-rounded label is the best we could hope for.

“When singer Henrik Brockmann (ex-Royal Hunt) and I decided to form Timeless Fairytale, we settled on creating a very melodic and energetic album, with a lot of strong and deep melodies, neoclassical/symphonic influences, virtuosic playing and slightly melanchonic lyrics.‘A Story to Tell’ leads the listener into an evocative journey through multiple facets of human experiences and feelings, by offering a very dynamic and diverse sound palette which will surely keep the attention and interest high from the first to the last note.

Henrik acts just like a storyteller. His charming and unique vocal timbre matches perfectly with the underlying ‘arabesque’ musical atmosphere that characterizes most of the tracks. The album also has a few pleasant twists here and there, but without ever losing its cohesive nature.

“The song ‘Argumente’ (Arguments) is about the lack of realisation to let a loved one go, even though you have long since realised that the relationship with them has no future. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case, as we in the band have already experienced first-hand and there are plenty of examples out there of friends and acquaintances who have gone through something similar.” HERBST writes.

“You can’t let go of the habit; you’re actually inhibited in your everyday life because you want to break out, but you can’t bring yourself to pick up the handle, which would do you good to be happy and carefree again; because you’re holding on to (old) memories from (happy days). The song ultimately addresses the contradiction between heart and head, which – as is often the case in human relationships – do not come together.

The relationships we have are also reflections of our (shared or individual) characteristics. That’s why the album title ‘Mirror’ is and remains the most fitting we could have chosen. Everything is related to each other. And your life partner/companion is somewhere or at some point your mirror (image) if you spend enough time with them.”

Spectacular times for CRIMSON VEIL: after fascinating fans under most ominous weather conditions at Metalfest Open Air (CZ), the UK based band open the second chapter of their myth-enshrouded “Hex” (September 20, 2024 through Reigning Phoenix Music) story today. Their new single and music video, ‘Illuminate,’ is an excellent portrayal of their stage acting, which should eventually be experienced firsthand to fully absorb the quartet’s art, completed by highly emotional tones of both vocal and instrumental sections.

CRIMSON VEIL explain, “‘Illuminate’ was written during a period of dark reflection, waiting for a new pathway to appear. It’s about letting go of your dreams and giving yourself over to the universe and trusting it will guide you out of a dead end.”

Always known for rising to new challenges, the music video for ‘Illuminate’ features contemporary dance, ballet and demonology, all performed by singer Mishkin and cellist Hana. Mirroring each other in a beautiful church hall, the pair perform a shadow and light dance ritual over a giant sigil chalked into the floor. Musically, the song is a construct of ethereal vocals on a bed of cellos, guitars and complex yet subtle drum patterns. As the song builds, singer Mishkin screams the lyrical mantra as the music explodes into a heavy instrumental before coming in for the final chorus. ‘Even If I Crawl As I Lay Under The Weight Of It All’ was the song’s original title but it was shortened to ‘Illuminate’ as its meaning is about waiting for the pathway to appear while in a period of dark reflection.
