For The Metal Voice Kenny Kessel recently spoke to Mark and John Gallagher from the NWOBHM band Raven on April 27, 2024 in New Hope, Pennsylvania at John & Peters club.

When asked about their third album ‘All for One’
“This year is the band’s 50th anniversary, this album is 41 years. We came out with this album and it made an impact and in some ways we are still competing with this album, we are up against that history of that record. For us ‘All for one’ made a little bit of a first step  into the USA.  ‘All for one’ is a seminal record, that third album. it’s really a stamp of who we are and that is not taking anything away from our other albums. And of course it’s the title track, All for one, one for all. It’s like we are connecting with the people who come to see us. We are all kind of together. I still look back fondly on this record. We’re doing a box set for this record. It’s going to be a little bit of everything but it also includes a lot of rare stuff that’s  beyond what’s on this record.”

When asked about seeing former Raven drummer Rob ‘Wacko’ Hunter for the first time in 35 years.
“We never talked to Rob after he left for 5 years. Then I had a business thing come up, got him on the phone and we were on the phone for 3 hours. It was kind of nice to reconnect with Rob (recently on this tour). We picked right up where we left off. It has been 37 years since I have seen him.”

When asked about Raven  Having The Same Song Title As Metallica ‘Seek & Destroy’ on 83′ Tour
“Yeah we did laugh about it. We never heard either one’s (song before). All we heard from Metallica was No life til Leather (demo). I just remember hearing  like, ‘Hit the light’, ‘Whiplash’ “

Comprised of seasoned musicians Dom Murphy (vocals, guitars), Cormac Shanely (bass), Ruairi Lynch (production, guitar) and Evan Prendergast (Drums). CALLAS brings together former members of the acclaimed post-rock group ‘Ealadha’ and producer Ruairi Lynch from ‘Bantum’ driven by a collective desire to push the boundaries of heavy and experimental music.

Callas recently released their mind bending single, the EP title track ‘Days,’ accompanied by a visually striking music video created and directed by Aodhagan O Riabhaigh.

Hailing from Cork, Ireland; Callas crafts an ambient soundscape that’s both heavy and otherworldly on their new EP, ‘Days.’ This release embodies a dreamlike quality, featuring textures that fuse a diverse array of influences. It’s a masterful juxtaposition of light and dark, exploring profound themes such as loss, death, despair, rebirth, and the transcendental forces of nature through its lyrical content. Throughout the track list there’s a cathartic journey filled with moments of melancholy, hope, and a profound sense of time designed to take listeners on a transcendental experience. Callas consistently aims to capture those chilling, spine-tingling moments, creating sounds that seem as if they emanate from another planet, making ‘Days’ not only catchy but deeply immersive throughout.

‘Days’ is essentially a collection of songs showcasing the band’s fearlessness and desire to meld together different genres. Dripping with drama and majesty, the three songs weave between themes of loss, fear and defiance.

EP Tracklist:

Deep Purple have released the first song ‘Portable Door’ from their upcoming new album “=1″ through earMUSIC.

Produced by the Berlin-based agency Mutter & Vater and directed by Leo Feimer, the video showcases Deep Purple against the backdrop of the new album artwork, capturing the band in their essence as they share a stage and perform together.

The enigmatic album title =1 encapsulates the band’s philosophy of unity amidst complexity, promising an album that resonates deeply with their five decades spanning hard rock legacy. Produced once again by iconic Bob Ezrin, =1 captures the purest classic Deep Purple sound, without relying on nostalgia.

In a recent interview regarding the sonic direction of their upcoming album, guitarist Simon McBride shared insights, saying: “The new album will reflect what the five of us create in the rehearsal room. Many of the songs, like ‘Portable Door’, were written in the first sessions and literally came together in 5 or 10 minutes. It all was so easy and natural.”

Frontman Ian Gillan, highlighting the organic nature of Deep Purple’s song writing, added: “Throughout Deep Purple’s history, our best songs have always been those that were written in no time at all. We’ve played what felt good and developed songs as we have always done.”

CAVALERA Announce “Schizophrenia” Re-Recording, Reveal First Taste, Live Music Video for ‘Escape To The Void’

CAVALERA has become synonymous with extreme metal music, a name that to this day still holds the highest regard, a family legacy built upon decades of musical aggression. In 2023, Max and Iggor Cavalera achieved what some would say was an impossible feat; they revisited their earliest releases, Morbid Visions, and Bestial Devastation, and re-recorded them with bone-breaking intensity. A risk that few would dare to even attempt, yet they artfully and prolifically attained their trademark raw sound by means that could only be described as magic or time travel.

It seems that the ball would not stop rolling as now they are entering the final chapter of their early-days trilogy. Schizophrenia is an iconic album in terms of early thrash and death metal, a household name for those of us invested in extreme metal. This was the point where the Cavaleras refined their dark, dingy, speed-influenced songs, into something a bit more mature, developed, and technical. Decades later, they have once more unlocked the asylum that is Schizophrenia, opening the doors to that banished, twisted recording which will be unleashed unto to world on June 21st via Nuclear Blast Records.

The first taste of the reissue comes in the form of the live music video for the single. ‘Escape To The Void‘. Fans will enjoy footage filmed by Costin Chioreanu & Olivia Chioreanu from the band’s chilling performance at 013 Venue in Tilburg, Netherlands, 2023.

Max Cavalera states, “The Third World Trilogy is finally complete with Schizophrenia, Bestial Devastation, and Morbid Devastation, all three Brazilian underground gems! To me, Schizophrenia is the ultimate death/ thrash experiment! I was inspired to take on the world and this recording shows my commitment is relentless! This one is for all the generations to enjoy! Play at Max volume!”

Iggor Cavalera comments, “1987 was a very progressive year for metal, with releases like CELTIC FROST Into The Pandemonium, VOIVOD Killing Technology, and BATHORY Under The Sign Of The Black Mark, so it was no surprise on how we approached Schizophrenia pushing our boundaries from a black/death metal sound to a more thrash metal aesthetics. We still had some ideas from Morbid Visions and some new songs. I’m very proud of the songwriting and even more proud of our re-recordings.”n Of The Black Mark, so it was no surprise on how we approached Schizophrenia pushing our boundaries from a black/death metal sound to a more thrash metal aesthetics. 3. To the Wall – Re-Recorded
4. Escape to the Void – Re-Recorded

6. Screams Behind the Shadows – Re-Recorded
7. Septic Schizo – Re-Recorded
8. The Abyss – Re-Recorded
9. R.I.P. (Rest in Pain) – Re-Recorded
10. Nightmares of Delirium – New, never released

No stranger to collaborations, the Cavalera brothers enlisted Travis Stone (PIG DESTROYER) on lead guitars, and that choice becomes obvious within the first song. The full lineup would consist of more Cavalera alumni, as Igor Amadeus Cavalera (GO AHEAD AND DIE, HEALING MAGIC) once more brought his talents on bass to the fold. Thundering and thrumming the low end with brute force, it is clear that the double Iggor and Igor combination is a rhythm section to be reckoned with.

It should come as no surprise that the CAVALERA brothers always felt that these songs deserved a fresh take with modern production. From April 15th to June 5th, 2023 the band re-recorded the album at Focusrite Room in Mesa Arizona. Mixing and mastering was handled by Arthur Rizk (SOULFLY, GO AHEAD AND DIE, TURNSTILE).

Schizophrenia’s album cover has obsessed and fascinated fans for decades. The brothers left no stone unturned and no detail unnoticed, also revisioning the original cover artwork of the album, restored in hand-painted watercolors by Eliran Kantor.

This summer, CAVALERA will be traveling across Europe and the U.K. on their ‘Third World Trilogy’ tour. The trek will kick off on June 12th in Leichester and will make stops in Wroclaw, Oslo, and Barcelona before ending in Switzerland on July 21st.

Max and Iggor have relinquished an album that for many years was locked away behind rusty, iron cell doors, barred by straight jackets and haunted by madness. From the past comes the storms as Schizophrenia is set loose on the world once more!

THE MAGUS Unleash Arthur Brown Cover ‘Fire’

Greek veterans of THE MAGUS are proudly presenting their hellish cover of ARTHUR BROWN’s classic song ‘Fire’. The track comes in the form of an unique music video including prominent members of the Greek black metal scene such as ROTTING CHRIST, VARATHRON, LUCIFER’S CHILD and many more!

THE MAGUS comments on the track and collaboration with the scene:

“I always wanted to pay tribute to the remarkable Arthur Brown. This man, his music and theatrics shaped the aesthetics and visuals of the darker side of metal as we know it today.

So here it is: ‘Fire’. A cover of a 1968 song, performed by us in 2024, in our own extraordinary way. The video of the song is also another vision I had in my mind for years. I wanted to gather musicians and artists who I have worked with, one way or another, all these years. Friends, brothers and sisters, blasphemers and heretics. Individuals who have served and hammered (and continue to do so) relentlessly our most cherished music genre: black metal. Older and younger, originators and continuators. A big part of the Hellenic Black Metal scene. Our scene, our community, which is still going strong…

The video itself presents the way we bond and communicate in the physical level and the metaphysical level. So members (you know who they are!) of ROTTING CHRIST, VARATHRON, LUCIFER’S CHILD, KAWIR, W.E.B., ORDER OF THE  EBON HAND, YOTH IRIA, PENTHOS, FUNERAL STORM, EUPHROSYNE, have enjoyed our feast and joined our ritual.

It is your turn now Disciples, to enjoy and join! Like Serpents from the Depths we rise”

THE MAGUS-Fire (Arthur Brown cover feat. Efi-Eva from EUPHROSYNE)

Music: Arthur Brown, Vincent Crane, Mike Finesilver, Peter Ker
Lyrics: Peter Ker, Liam Paul, Paris Howlett
Recorded & Mixed at PENTAGRAM studio by George Emmanuel

  9. Give the Devil his due: The story

Hailing back to 1989, Greek black metal outfit Necromantia was founded by the two musicians Baron Blood (bass) and The Magus (vocals, guitars, keyboards). The band’s music was characterized by a mix of black metal and death metal, with elements of Greek folk music and classical music. Over the years, Necromantia had undergone several line-up changes, but the band continued to release albums and tour, becoming one of the most respected and influential black metal bands from Greece!

Following the tragic death of Baron Blood in 2019, The Magus decided to disband Necromantia by releasing their final album “To the Depths We Descend” in 2021. But The Magus’ personal musical and mystical journey did not stop here. The inner black flame, which urges The Magus to create dark and extreme art which is expressed through music and lyrics, never ceased to burn.

In the summer of 2022, The Magus decided to give birth to a new musical project, entitled simply and appropriately; THEMAGUS. Joined by long-time associates, El (Soulskinner, Zaratus, Thou Art Lord, Principality of Hell etc) on guitars and Maelstrom (Necromantia, Yoth Iria, Thou Art Lord, Principality of Hell) on drums in order to complete the formula and start working on material for the upcoming album “Βυσσοδομώντας” (pronounced as: “Vissodomontas”),  which was released on October 31st, 2023!

“Βυσσοδομώντας” is an album that is meticulous down to its last detail. Every note, every riff & chorus, is not by chance where it was placed. Except El (Guitars) & Maelstorm (Drums) who make up THE MAGUS, a host of well-known musicians participated adding their personal touch (King Dude, IDVex (1/2 SOUTHERN NORTH), Hel Pyre (W.E.B.), Iraklis Gialatzides (SWAN CHRISTY), Manos Six (Manos Six and the Muddy Devil) & Christos Antoniou (SEPTICFLESH) who did the arrangements for the live choir. At the same time, five graphic designers tackled the artwork of all formats and captured in an exemplary way on paper the nightmarish thoughts of The Magus. Finally, a special mention is needed for the amazing production, mixing & mastering, done at Pentagram Studio by George Emmanuel.

Line up:
The Magus: Bass/Voices
El: Guitars
Maelstrom: Drums
