FOLTERKAMMER Unveil New Song ‘Die Unterwerfung’, New Album Out Now

Operatic black metal rising stars FOLTERKAMMER are pleased to finally release their sophomore full-length, ‘Weibermacht,’ which is now available worldwide now via Century Media Records! In celebration, the band is sharing the final single from the offering, “Die Unterwerfung,” which can be heard at THIS LOCATION.

Vocalist Andromeda Anarchia comments on the offering, “This song somehow combines everything that is Folterkammer: classical music elements, raw black metal aggression, historical themes, mythology and quotes from European folklore, portraits of cunning and strong women, strong contrasts, and provocation.

“Folterkammer makes classical music, played by a metal band. Not symphonic music with an orchestral sound, more like a chamber music ensemble playing black metal recitals. Or as we call it: torture chamber music.

“The music of ‘Die Unterwerfung’ is strongly inspired by the classical aesthetics of the Middle Ages. Thematically, this song is about the old and well-known spicy story of Aristotle and Phyllis, which has been told in the southern part of the German-speaking regions since the Middle Ages. Since musicians are also storytellers, we wanted to translate this story into modern times and create a black metal version of it – and thus keep this wonderful old tradition alive.

“What the story is about: The beautiful and charming Phyllis seduces, tricks and humiliates the intellectual, role model figure Aristotle out of revenge in front of an entire court. Aristotle is then exposed to ridicule and disgrace and flees. In a distant land, he meditates on the deceitfulness of female cunning.

“This tale was written by an unknown court poet. It depicts the motif of the wise and powerful man who is seduced, humiliated, and disgraced by a cunning woman. Two German versions are known, the so-called Strasbourg version and the older Benediktbeuren version. We quote small passages from both versions in the intro of this song, immediately after an altered sequence from a popular German nursery rhyme at the very beginning of the intro.

“There are various explanations for the popularity of this motif: one of them is that it is assumed that the depiction was intended to appeal to the public as a warning against the deceptions and temptations of women and was therefore particularly popular in the religious context of the time.

“The motif of the superior woman who seduces, incapacitates and humiliates the wise man has been known in world literature since the 5th century and was particularly popular in Europe from the 13th to the 16th century. It probably came to Europe from the Orient at the time of the Crusades. The term ‘Weibermacht’ is an official art and cultural-historical term for this motif. The d*minatr*x embodies this female figure to the fullest, which is why we have highlighted her in our ‘Weibermacht’ album.

“In addition to the textual evidence, this motif was also widespread in the pictorial representations of the late Middle Ages. Depictions have been found on everyday objects such as knife handles, combs, and stove tiles. Sculptures and façade reliefs in various churches and cathedrals have also been documented. In art, a variety of design techniques were used to depict the motif. In addition to sculptures, drawings, copperplate engravings, woodcuts, ivory carvings etc. are also documented. A concrete example is the woodcut ‘Weibermacht’ (from 1513, by Hans Baldung Grien).

“It is obvious that we have also been influenced by this graphic aesthetics for our album cover, painted by the one and only Eliran Kantor.”

‘Weibermacht’ serves as a counterpart to the band’s 2020 debut, ‘Die Lederpredigt.’ The new record is another searing blend of modern black metal and classical music elements, lending to its Avant Garde sound. The music itself is elevated by frontwoman and vocalist Andromeda Anarchia’s dynamic vocal work as she juxtaposes her classical training as an opera singer with her hellfire screams, summoning a maelstrom of ethereal chaos. Pre-orders are now live HERE.

The album artwork for ‘Weibermacht’ was created by Eliran Kantor.

Founded in New York around 2018/2019, Folterkammer, or “Torture Chamber,” is the operatic black metal outfit that is redefining modern music. This ingenious band seamlessly fuses beauty with brutality. A combination of raw passion and technique contributes to the epic nature of Folterkammer’s dark art. Their work is both nostalgic and remarkably fresh. Yes, Folterkammer fuses various musical traditions and genres to craft an unparalleled experience.

Folterkammer is composed of Andromeda Anarchia on vocals, Zachary Ezrin on guitars, Darren Hanson on guitars, Laurent David on bass, and Brendan McGowan on drums. Both Anarchia, who hails from Switzerland, and David, who was born in Paris, divide their time between Europe and Brooklyn. Thus, even though the group can be described as international, Anarchia states: “It took New York to create Folterkammer.” Her project Andromeda Anarchia’s DARKMATTERS acted as the catalyst that brought her to the Big Apple, where she met Ezrin. Many metalheads already know that Anarchia has appeared as a guest on the three most recent albums by Ezrin’s brainchild Imperial Triumphant — a leading avant-garde band that marries extreme metal, jazz, classical components, etc. McGowan has also provided guest vocals for Imperial Triumphant, and Hanson lent his songwriting excellence to their 2012 instrumental track “Scaphism.”

Ezrin, McGowan, and Hanson have a wealth of shared history. These friends attended college together in California, where Hanson and Ezrin studied classical composition. Thus, much of Folterkammer’s orchestration is classically based. Hanson harbors a special love of Baroque music and knows precisely how to expertly wed it with his passion for black metal. Folterkammer was actually conceived when Ezrin proposed that Anarchia collaborate with him on some of Hanson’s material. Ezrin writes killer riffs and more for the band. McGowan was invited to join Folterkammer on Hanson’s wise suggestion. His drums are perhaps the heaviest element keeping one of Folterkammer’s limbs firmly anchored in traditional black metal. McGowan mines inspiration from different generations of acts: He names 1349 and old-school heroes like Blasphemy and Marduk. That said, black metal fans will also be pleased to hear the spirit of the second wave in the aggression of Folterkammer’s tremolo picking, for example.

The exceptionally skilled David, Folterkammer’s newest weapon, truly perfects the group with his golden touch on bass. Whereas the bass is not always as prominent as it could be in the content of many black metal groups, Folterkammer purposely allows David’s bass to shine through. Like his bandmates, David is an avid consumer of several forms of music, and thus creates delightfully eclectic art. He has received both classical and jazz training. This major talent has toured worldwide alongside musicians and bands such as Ibrahim Maalouf, Guillaume Perret & The Electric Epic, Yael Naim, and Shijin. David has done so both as a side man and as a band leader/producer. Anarchia and Ezrin already knew David before asking him to join Folterkammer. After all, David founded the “avant metal-jazz trio” Kilter of which Imperial Triumphant’s Kenny Grohowski is an essential part.

RATS WILL FEAST Drop ‘Penetration’ Single

Finnish experimental hardcore outfit RATS WILL FEAST is preparing to drop their monstrous new full-length album, “Hellhole”, through Time To Kill Records on May 17th 2024.

Today, the band unveils the album’s second single, “Penetration”. Stream it HERE.

RATS WILL FEAST commented:

“The title of the song ‘Penetration’ refers to a parasitic relationship, where one party takes what they need and wilts the other one. Our band’s lyrics often strive to achieve this dual perspective; how it feels in your own head and how it feels to live in this world. Such a relationship manifests itself in both personal and social life, where exploiting the other is commonplace”.

RATS WILL FEAST draws their musical landscape from extreme aggression and hallucinatory chaos. Hailing from Jyväskylä, Finland, the band has been touring actively in its current form since 2018. Varying between crushing hardcore, noisy psychedelia and more mellow post-rock sounds on their 2019 album “Scarcity”, 2020 EP “Songs of a Racehorse” and 2021’s “Malady”, the band’s new album “Hellhole” continues the development of the bands destructive chaotic hardcore sound.

“Hellhole” is the culmination of the band’s all the previous work. It’s a bruising demonstration of the bands core sound: chaotic rhythms, battering drums, screeching vocals, varied guitar melodies and crushing riffs with gritty low frequencies. Characteristic of the band, the album is defined by the twisted song structures and desolate, emotional lyrics which deal with the artificiality of the modern world.

Tracklist:

01. Penetration
02. None Fated
03. Dog Technology
04. Hellhole
05. Lukewarm Futures
06. Goodbye John Wayne
07. Tourmaline

Danish doom/gothic metal combo BLAZING ETERNITY is back with a new album. “A Certain End Of Everything” – out today – is the first new album since 2003 from one of Denmark’s pioneer bands within the melodic doom/goth metal genre.

“A Certain End Of Everything” consists of seven new tracks featuring the well-known Blazing Eternity atmosphere and fingerprint – a melancholic, epic and atmospheric doom/gothic metal mix with weeping guitars and harsh vocals. The album is bleak and melancholic, but with a certain beauty shining in the darkness – and with very personal lyrics dealing with death, depression, and personal tragedies. But with a gleam of hope in the end…

Pushes all the right buttons to fans of early Katatonia, My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost.

“A Certain End Of Everything” was written and arranged by original members Peter Mesnickow, Morten Kroll Lybecker and Lars Riis Korsholm – with additional synth arrangements by Flemming Kaspersen from electronic act Delayscape.

“A Certain End Of Everything” is out today on LP (black vinyl), digipack CD and digital formats via Mighty Music. It can be streamed and ordered at this link.

“A Certain End Of Everything” tracklist:

1. One Thousand Lights
2. The Secrets Of White
3. A Certain End Of Everything
4. The Ghosts Of Another Broken Life
5. No Bringer Of Light
6. Your Mountains Will Drown Again
7. The Bells

Blazing Eternity was formed in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1993 and released two successful demo tapes in 1996 and 1998 leading to a deal with German Prophecy Productions. This resulted in the two albums ”Times And Unknown Waters” (2000) and ”A World To Drown In” (2003) as well as performances on big festivals such as Roskilde Festival and Wave Gotik Treffen.

After 2004, the band was not active anymore – until 2011/2012 when Blazing Eternity reformed for four concerts in Denmark and Germany.

After this, the band went into hiatus but secretly started working on new material in 2018. But with big challenges in the process. First the death of vocalist Peter Mesnickow’s long-time wife Lilja, and secondly the death of Blazing Eternity live-keyboardist Jens Hansen. Two events that have affected the new songs a lot – but at the end leading to the brand-new album “A Certain End Of Everything”. to be released in April 2024.

Recorded with Jacob Gundel (Withering Surface, Invocator etc). Mixed and mastered by Markus Stock Schwadorf (Empyrium, The Vision Bleak, Alcest, etc), who also produced the first two albums by Blazing Eternity.

Blazing Eternity is confirmed for Metal Magic Festival (DK) and Næstved Metal Fest (DK) in 2024, but more live performances will be announced later.

“I absolutely loved to mix and master this album of my old friends Blazing Eternity. Not just because of reasons of nostalgia but because it is an absolutely beautiful and soulful album that lives in the past and the here and now“ Markus Stock Schwadorf.

Lineup:
Peter Mesnickow – vocals
Morten Kroll Lybecker – guitars, bass, synths
Lars Riis Korsholm – drums

Additional live members:
Kim Larsen – guitars
Magnus Ringling – bass
Anders Ro Nielsen – keyboards

Rockshots Records is proud to present and announce the signing of Auro Control, a new Brazilian band dedicated to excellent Prog/Power Metal. Today, they premiere the release of the first single from their debut album titled “The Harp”. Led by vocalist Lucas de Ouro, the band comprises a talented lineup including bassist Thiago “Bonga” Baumgarten, guitarist Lucas Barnery, drummer Davi Britto, and guitarist Diego Pires. With their fast, precise, melodic, virtuous, and energetic sound, Auro Control delivers an amazing auditory experience that leaves a lasting impression.

“The Harp” is an ambitious album, uniting the greatness of Power Metal with the depth of Prog Metal and the richness of percussion from Bahia-Brazil, resulting in a unique and surprising sound. The album, recorded at Estúdio Fusão in São Paulo and produced by Thiago Bianchi, will feature the participation of Bianchi himself (Noturnall, ex-Shaman), Aquiles Priester (W.A.S.P., ex-Angra), Felipe Andreoli (Angra), Bahian singer Aiace, and Metal icon Jeff Scott Soto. In its Japanese version, the album will feature the exclusive bonus track: Inside the Mirror.

The album’s singles provide a glimpse into the band’s essence, showcasing their main influences and delivering energizing anthems with messages that encourage introspection and reflection. As the album unfolds, listeners are taken on a journey through the subjectivity of the human soul, with moments of power and complexity interspersed with Brazilian percussion and Northeastern rhythms.

The lyrics draw inspiration from dark moments and overcoming difficulties, serving as reflections and invitations to find one’s spotlight in life. Metaphors of battling loneliness and transformation resonate throughout, emphasizing the importance of willpower and courage.

For fans of bands like Angra, Stratovarius, Helloween, Symphony X, and Dream Theater, “The Harp” offers a refreshing and mature debut album that combines technical prowess with beautiful melodies and melodic ideas. It’s a compelling fusion of Power Metal classics and the rhythmic traditions of northeastern Brazil, marking Auro Control as a band to watch in the metal scene.

The GRAMMY Award-winning group, celebrating their 25th anniversary, recorded Cometh the Storm at GodCity Studio in Salem, Massachusetts with producer Kurt Ballou. The 11-song effort – the band’s ninth studio album – marks the release of the first new High on Fire music since 2018’s Electric Messiah and the first to feature drummer Coady Willis (Big Business, Murder City Devils), alongside bassist Jeff Matz, and guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike.

It has been more than five years since the band’s revered Electric Messiah earned High on Fire ‘Best Metal Performance’ at the 2018 GRAMMY Awards, placing the unit among the ranks of groups such as Black Sabbath, Motörhead, and Metallica as winners of the prestigious award. “Being nominated for a Grammy was pretty mind blowing, but winning one was truly surreal,” says bassist Jeff Matz. “A Grammy win was certainly not something we were aiming for, but it’s quite an honor to be recognized in that way, and we are grateful. In terms of how it’s affected us, it has definitely opened some new doors—we’ve gained some new fans and wider recognition, but it hasn’t changed how we approach our craft. We’ve always tried to create uncompromising music that feels good to us, and is in line with what we would want to listen to.”

In the half decade since the band’s Grammy nod, the world has seismically shifted and is a different place. The same can be said for High on Fire. The band’s musical archetype has been modded, morphed, and evolved; its blast radius widened. Bassist Jeff Matz joined Mutoid Man and traveled abroad to study and learn the techniques of Middle Eastern folk music and the plucked string instrument, the bağlama (or saz), Matt Pike formed a solo band, released an LP, and toured the U.S., and world-renowned percussionist, Coady Willis, he of Melvins, Big Business, and Murder City Devils united with Pike and Matz to breathe new life into the group a quarter century into their captivating career.

The lead track on High on Fire’s new album, Cometh the Storm, is the invigorating ‘Burning Down’, a vigorous barrage which exemplifies the prowess the unification of the three professional musicians owns.

Universally recognised as one of the most potent acts in music today, High on Fire creates dynamic metal that merges primal fury and aggression, hesher bombast and hall of fame heaviness. Described as “a supersonic exercise in conquest by volume,” High on Fire has rewritten the hard rock rule book since their formation in 1998, forging a style and sound that is both critically celebrated and unique. The group features vocalist and cult guitar hero Matt Pike (also a founding member of the famed underground band SLEEP) singular bassist Jeff Matz, and powerhouse drummer Coady Willis.

High on Fire are:
Matt Pike: guitar, vocals
Jeff Matz: bass, guitar, bağlama, mellotron, percussion
Coady Willis: drums, percussion, vocals

The truth is out there! Conspiracy theories are a dime a dozen these days, but one of the most shocking and intriguing in years is one posed by the popular podcast “Your Mom’s House,” who’ve asked the real important question: Is Garth Brooks a serial killer? Well, Louisville truth seekers and thrash metalheads BELUSHI SPEED BALL have chosen to immortalize the theory on their latest single “Garth, Let My Family Go,” which begs for closure and information on where the bodies are buried.

Commenting on the track, lead vocalist Vinny Crastellano says:

“Garth, we are begging you please, just give us closure. Where are the bodies Garth, WHERE ARE THE BODIES!? We know you are sitting there thinking to yourself, “Somebody stop me”. But no one has been able to. Please for the love of god!“

From the band that brought you “My Favorite Color Is Pizza,” a blistering love song about spicy pie, and “This Is The Peak,” a raging track dedicated to an infamous bald headed critic, comes the latest metal masterpiece “Garth, Let My Family Go.” Watch the 8-bit video for the song here:

Crastellano adds about the video:

“The Garth segment of “Your Mom’s House” is one of our favorite bits ever. We wanted to pay homage to the genius prophecy, in the only way we know how… with satire. Allegedly, in a remote area, an area most known for its remoteness, sit’s Garth with cheese sandwiches, thinking to himself, “somebody stop me! We proudly present all of this alleged glory captured in an 8-bit music video.“

Crastellano says of the upcoming album:

“We are proud to present the world with, ‘Stellkira.’ An album that truly encompasses the DNA that embodies the entity Belushi Speed Ball. Our fans can expect an unrelenting punch to the gut dripping with pepperoni grease. This is what happens when you go beyond sixteen chapels and make the mythical seventeenth! Hold on to your lug nuts, It’s time for an overhaul!”

About BELUSHI SPEED BALL:

Belushi Speed Ball is a Kentucky-based band founded in 2013 as a studio project amongst friends with a penchant for cliché crossover thrash. Their first live performances came soon after, enthralling a rapidly growing fanbase with a uniquely interactive brand of theatrics and unorthodox approach to releases and merch.

Dubbed “one of the funniest fucking things I have heard this year” by The Needle Drop’s Anthony Fantano, Belushi Speed Ball are inspired by bands from Toxic Holocaust and Anthrax to Gwar and Municipal Waste, to whom they simultaneously play homage and satirize a mean comment from a fan in their song “Ripping off Municipal Waste”, which was voted one of Leo Magazine’s top 20 songs of 2022. With a reputation for both trashing venues and meticulously cleaning them up after each individually themed performance, Belushi Speed Ball are masters of executing the unthinkable.  From playing out of a Mad Max-esque moving van and starting Terminator-inspired 300-person Nerf gun fights to releasing entire albums in N64… or Furby… formats, nothing is sacred as they continue evolving as, in the words of Metalsucks, “a freakshow of blistering thrash dedicated to laughing its ass off at blistering thrash.”

This year, Belushi Speedball are readier than ever to keep that momentum going, with yet another album mastered to perfection by Joel Grind of Toxic Holocaust, as well as a host of festival appearances, tours, and merch set to drop over the months to come.
