Anglo-Finnish progressive metallers WHEEL are pleased to announce the release of their much-anticipated third studio album ‘Charismatic Leaders’ on the 3rd May 2024. The album was meticulously crafted to meet Wheel’s ever-heightening benchmarks and recording with engineers/co-producers Daniel Bergstrand and Fredrik Thordendal (Meshuggah) stretched from August to December 2023. The end result, mixed by Forrester Savell, has consolidated all the gains of what came before: singer/guitarist James Lascelles, lead guitarist Jussi Turunen and drummer Santeri Saksala’s third album represents their heaviest and most conscious music to date.

Vocalist & guitarist James Lascelles comments of the track: “This is probably the most metal song I have ever written – it is intense as all hell when it kicks in and it keeps finding new ways to punch you in the face all the way to the end! Santeri did an incredible job with the drum track on this one and playing it live is really going to take some work in the rehearsal room..
Lyrically, it is about media empires and the effect they have on wider society – all of us are influenced to some degree, even if we would rather not admit it. Issues that require nuance are presented as binaries and opposing views are made into caricatures – a target for us to rage at that far too often, doesn’t even exist. This is not a new phenomenon by any means but it is one that seems to have been catalysed by the modern landscape of media, the internet and populist politics. As you might be able to tell from the mood of the song, this pisses me off immensely and it was cathartic to vent about it.”
‘Charismatic Leaders’ clocks in at just under 50 minutes, and will be available as a Limited CD Digipak (also featuring the Rumination EP tracks as bonus), and a Gatefold 180g LP, both featuring artwork from Lucas Mayer (Long Distance Calling, Blackout Problems).
The band will be celebrating the release of their new album with their first ever shows in Australia (supporting label-mates Caligula’s Horse) as well as their first ever North American headline shows. Recorded, mixed, and mastered at the prestigious Vyrah Studios under the expert guidance of Michael Streckbein, “Breakcore Beats” is a whirlwind of intensity and innovation, delivering a relentless fusion of melodic death grind.
“Sunshine – as honest as the Ruhr area, sounds like a game night with As I Lay Dying and Mörser,” describes the band’s unique sound, encapsulating the essence of their music in a single phrase.
“Many bands write really good biographies, we prefer to write really good songs.” Says the band. And indeed, their music speaks volumes, transcending language barriers and connecting with audiences on a primal level.
The band has only been around for a year or two. However, it’s worth looking at their history to understand who they are and what makes their music unique.
The journey started in 2019 as a vague concept brewing in a cozy corner bar in Essen, accompanied by the refreshing taste of Stauder beer. That rainy spring evening brought together three young men, each boasting decades of musical expertise. Sunshine’s roots trace back to the early 1990s when some of its members, along with their previous band, secured their first record deal with the German label, “Alveran Records,” making a name for themselves in the underground scene. Over the years, various members of Sunshine and their bands landed contracts with well-known industry names and toured Europe with acts like As I Lay Dying, Heaven Shall Burn, Napalm Death, and Burry Tomorrow.
From the remnants of these underground bands emerged something new and exciting. After just a few jam sessions, it became evident that Sunshine was on the brink of creating something extraordinary. However, the pandemic-induced slowdowns delayed Sunshine’s full realization until 2022. From the beginning, Sunshine has been all about honest and uncompromising melodic death grind. Their sound is a vibrant amalgamation of diverse subgenres, infused with hardcore and punk influences, evident in their music’s dynamic range. Whether intricate and harmonious or raw and aggressive, Sunshine’s songs always reflect the emotions that shape their identity.
Barrus is the alias of Polish guitarist and music producer, Rafał Lipka. His creative journey began in 2010 in Olsztyn as a co-founder of the thrash metal band Eyewash.
In 2018, the band split up and Rafał fully devoted himself to his solo project. In the same year, he released a demo “surcease” and two years later, the debut album “DPDR“, featuring six instrumental tracks spanning the genres of art/atmospheric/progressive rock.
Right now, Barrus is preparing for the release of a new album titled “The Kids“.
The new album “The Kids” takes its name from the second track on the record, which explores the theme of abandoning one’s inner children. In this context, they serve as a metaphor for all kinds of fears, pains, or wounds that we carry within ourselves. In the pursuit of being “adults,” we desperately reject that part of ourselves which is no different from a small child, in need of warmth, love, and understanding. We approach negative emotions like pathological parents, abandoning them in an internal orphanage, washing our hands of their existence.
The lyrics on the album partly describe and raise awareness of such repression or its consequences. Through this, the author provides his metaphorical inner children with care and space for understanding, offering them a new home.
The music on the album combines alternative, art rock, and downtempo genres. The sonic foundation is a gritty-sounding electric guitar and vocals, often appearing in harmonious arrangements. However, “The Kids” doesn’t stick to a static instrumentation. The album features a classic lineup (guitar, bass, drums, Rhodes, synthesizers), as well as unconventional electronic beats sampled from everyday objects such as a tobacco heater, water droplets, or a creaky chair.
“The Kids” is an album that resembles more of a narrative than party bangers or background music for conversations. It serves as a soundtrack for moments when you feel down and need someone to clothe your emotions in melody and abstraction.
Music for this release was recorded and mixed by the project leader – Rafał Lipka, while the mastering was done by Marvin at Tide Studio Lodon (Tableau Mort, Phantom Horde). Album cover artowk was done by Urszula Pachała. New album titled “The Kids” will be released digitally April 2, 2024.
