Finnish melodic and progressive metal band Notio released their second studio album Worldview on March 8th 2024 via Inverse Records.

Albert Olli comments:
“Worldview is a story-driven concept album, just like its predecessor Lucid Dreams For Sale (2019). The album’s themes are dealing with future threats and the resulting anxiety, accepting one’s own mortality and limitations, and man’s relationship with himself and his environment.

The story of the album focuses on the Protagonist, a person who suffers from world-weariness (weltschmerz). The Protagonist claims to have seen a prophecy according to which the Earth intends to use its natural forces to destroy Homo sapiens and the societies it has built. Earth has had enough of Homo sapiens and now it’s time for a deadly counterattack. The Protagonist tries to convince his loved ones and others close to him about the prophecy, but no one listens to him and he is declared crazy. The Protagonist decides to save himself by running away from the inevitable.

The listener can interpret the lyrics of the songs and their meanings as they wish. However, I wrote the album’s lyrics in such a way that the listener can look at the lyrics from two different perspectives. The first point of view is that the Protagonist’s pain grows so great that he loses touch with reality and, accompanied by his delusions, ends up taking his own life. There will be no counterattack of nature, only the Protagonist’s pain will end.

Another point of view is that the Earth is a living being and it feels pain and suffering like all other living beings and to get rid of its suffering, it destroys the cause of pain, i.e. Homo sapiens. The prophecy comes true. The Protagonist does not take his own life and he survives the counterattack of nature. Of course, both scenarios can happen at the same time, so the album’s lyrics are like a continuous dialogue between these two different options.

The purpose is to encapsulate in the album the anxiety that I believe many, especially young people, experience in today’s world. The world is a scary place, and the 24/7 updated (fake) news stream on the screen of a smart device does not make the situation any easier. Climate crisis, natural disasters, loss of biodiversity, economic crisis, capitalism and consumer culture, wars and global pandemics make the future look dark and uncertain. Death is constantly present.

The flood of stimuli and constant images of threats keep the hunter-gatherer’s brain in overdrive and inevitably shape and challenge everyone’s worldview in one way or another. At the same time, however, the brain of a good mind strives to create a slightly more positive image of reality, in order to maintain the person’s ability to function. The question arises, what should we believe and what is the truth in the end? Are we heading towards the end of humanity or is man just afraid of the end of his own life?

This album was really challenging to make, but I believe that all the effort can be heard in the end result. We started recording the album in June 2020 and the final version of the album was completed in September 2023. There were long breaks between the recording sessions, because I wanted to practice all the songs in advance as well as possible. In the end, there were a total of 14 actual recording days. Thinking about the synthesizer/piano patterns and mixing the album also took its own time, because I wanted everything to sound like it should. I am more than satisfied with the end result and each song has its own place in this whole.

If I had to sum up the album in one sentence, I would say that this is one person’s inner journey towards accepting the finality of death in this uncertain world, and that journey can be extremely colorful.”

SINISTRO Sign with Alma Mater Records, Reveal First Video Single from Upcoming Album “Vértice”

Posted by tarjavirmakari on March 9, 2024
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: SINISTRO. Leave a comment

Lisbon-based doom outfit SINISTRO has inked a worldwide deal with Alma Mater Records, the powerhouse label run by MOONSPELL frontman Fernando Ribeiro. A music video for the band’s first, haunting single “Pontas Soltas”, taken off their upcoming album Vértice, is now streaming below! SINISTRO‘s fourth studio offering is slated for a September 2024 release on Alma Mater Records.

Fernando Ribeiro comments:

“It’s quite extraordinary that Sinistro, one of the most and darkest groundbreaking Portuguese bands, chose Alma Mater Records as their new home. We can’t wait to start working on Vértice and make the light shine over their newest and direst gems this album contains. Sinistro is back to reclaim their rightful place on the doom, post metal scene and to build up their legacy started back in 2011. Still a lot to come.”

“We are happy to announce that we signed with Alma Mater Records, a label we have been following in recents years, witnessing it´s ongoing growth and specially because it´s a label created by a fan of music, for fans of music!“ The band reveals. “We know Fernando for quite a lot of years now, and see Alma Mater as the perfect re-vamping for Sinistro, its been over 5 years, but it definitely worth the wait and we could not ask for a better new home to unleash our brand new album “Vértice” in 2024.“

Decibel Magazine, who just exclusively premiered SINISTRO‘s first video single, writes: “In what could be described as a Tool video directed by David Lynch, Sinistro is giving us six whole months to decode the noir tale of a wooden jointed art class mannequin and whatever that smoking pile of dirt is supposed to be.

Brooding and moody, ‘Pontas Soltas’ sounds anything but loose as Priscila Da Costa’s siren call hunts the depths of Vértice’s sonic waters. If, like I, you’re irresistibly drawn to the slow and the dark, your day is about to improve considerably.“

Coming from the Portuguese underground, SINISTRO have crafted their way into the international music scene with their groundbreaking, fully instrumental and self-titled debut album from 2012, a film soundtrack ambiance and landscape approach with a Floydian touch that quickly established them as a unique collective of musicians.

2013 seen the band release their Cidade EP, for the first time adding vocals to their enthralling sound, that gained high praise from both national and international press. SINISTRO signed to Season Of Mist in 2016, with their much-acclaimed album Semente, they crafted and perfected even more their incredible songwriting skills and became sort of a rock/fado (typical Portuguese chant) to many.

Having toured and acclaimed by the likes of Paradise Lost, Cult Of Luna, Mono, Alcest or

Subrosa, with countless shows in Europe and South America as well as high profile festivals such as Roadburn Festival, Doom Over London, Graspop MM, Metal Days, Eistnaflug Iceland or Resurrection Fest, with three impressive full-length records under their belt and after five years rebuilding the band in the midst of a pandemic and line-up changes, SINISTRO finally return with their new album Vértice!

About their first single release, the band says: “It showcases the sound we have been perfecting since our previous 2 records, the movie soundtrack vibes and the heavy density ambience mixed with a Fado sensibility throughout the entire album is a constant voyage into our world, the lyrics on “Pontas Soltas”  approach the familiar comfort of repetition vs the unknown aspects of life, life is not meant to be contained but rather embraced and admired as we unravel the beauty of its intricacies.“

Vértice was produced by Miguel Tereso (Gaerea, Analepsy) and will be released in September 2024 via Alma Mater Records. Furthermore, the band announced to play their first show in over 5 years, on March 16th at AaltStadhaus in Differdange, Luxembourg, with many more dates to follow soon!

SINISTRO is:
Priscila Da Costa
Rick Chain
Paulo Lafaia
Ricardo Matias

French Cinematic Symphonic Metallers KNIGHTS OF HELIOPOLIS have released their fourth single ‘The River Of Life’ taken from the new EP “The Planeswalkers”!

KNIGHTS OF HELIOPOLIS on new EP:
“This new EP is released first as five separate singles. Those single are a bit special compared to what the band usually does. The character of our story, the knights of Heliopolis, in addition to being alchemists and in accordance to this same craft, are what we called « planeswalkers ». That means they can travel between worlds and dimensions.
The stories happening in this EP are not happening in the chronology of the main narrative arc of the story contained in the EP ‘The Last Guardian’ and the album ‘Ferrum Fero Ferro Feror’. You can see them as side stories that could happen anywhere in the timeline of the Helioverse.”

KNIGHTS OF HELIOPOLIS say on “The River Of Life“, the fourth single from the “The Planeswalkers” series:
“In this song, the knights of Heliopolis are traveling to the world of Final Fantasy VII, discovering the terrific events happening there for the fate of the planet. They’ll discreetely bring their support for the heroes of Gaïa to vanquish evil!
The song was made to celebrate the release of the very awaited game ‘Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth‘ and is also a love letter to the original game!”

MIDNIGHT’s “Hellish Expectations” Full-Length Album Out Now, Visualizer for ‘Expect Total Hell’ Revealed

Hellish Expectations, the newest offering from Cleveland’s favorite filth metal alchemists, MIDNIGHT, is out today on Metal Blade Records!

Dirty, hostile, and alluringly obnoxious, MIDNIGHT makes music to start fights to. One-man-army, Athenar, has been churning out an ungodly racket, dropping countless demos, splits, and EPs and ultimately slaying the metal/punk underground with his own addictive brand of lust, grime, and sleaze for over two decades. And in 2024 he’s with the band’s sixth full-length, the blackened heavy metal rumblings of Hellish Expectations.

“It’s a knuckle-dragger with a fat cutoff,” notes Athenar, “Probably the most concise and straight to the point MIDNIGHT album to date, and all written in a weekend.”

“From start to finish, this album is a banger,” hails MetalSucks. “There are no songs to be skipped, and the sleaziness of the vocals and lyrics is, as always, a huge seller of the album as well. Even the video [“F.O.A.L.”] has parental controls on it, so that should give you an idea of the sleaze levels we’re dealing with.” Last Rites concurs, “If you know MIDNIGHT, you know what this record sounds like, but Hellish Expectations pushes the lust, the filth, the sleaze, and the metal farther into the red. It’s angrier, more energetic, more direct… It’s fun as hell, fast as hell, loud as hell, silly as hell, irreverent as hell, and all of those are the hellish expectations one should have when approaching it, and all the reasons you should love every second of it.” Rock Hard Germany writes, “MIDNIGHT remains unattainable and unmistakable – Athenar has proven this once again with this masterpiece, MIDNIGHT’s best album since Satanic Royalty.” New Noise hails, “No love songs, no ballads, just speed, mayhem, and lots of volume. It’s attitude-driven, walking that fine line between good, old-fashioned punk rock and a headbanging nod to classic Venom – Anything less and it wouldn’t be MIDNIGHT…Hellish Expectations is Athenar going for broke and laying it all on the line for his fans, for better or worse, and the good news is, he nailed it.” Adds The Headbanging Moose, “…raise your horns nonstop in the name of sheer blasphemy to the sound of this precious gem of the underground.“

With just over a month to go before Israeli gothic doom metal band TOMORROW’S RAIN releases their highly anticipated sophomore album, Ovdan, the band has revealed their latest single “Roads,” which features Heljarmadr of Dark Funeral and Tony Wakefored of Sol Invictus.

Commenting on the track, vocalist Yishai Sweartz says:

“I think ‘Roads’ is the song i would play to someone who wants to know what we are all about, it contains various elements from different musical worlds and the blend brings something unique to the table. It’s who we are in 8 min if you are curious.“

Pre-order Ovdan now at https://shop.aoprecords.de

The band’s sophomore album Ovdan, which is Hebrew for “Loss,” marks the return of vocalist Yishai Sweartz who suffered a near fatal heart attack and open heart surgery in early 2023. After nearly losing everything, Swartz and crew have emerged with resilient spirit and creative force on their most dynamic and ambitious record yet.

The eagerly awaited record, Ovdan, features guest collaborators from Mayhem, Sol Invictus, Dark Funeral, Mercyful Fate and Sisters of Mercy to name a few.

Sweartz recently said of the record:

“The album was written and recorded during a dark period in our lives and the creative process was in fact our cure to get back to life after several traumatic events we faced, musically we pushed the boundaries and yet kept the vision started in our debut album Hollow (2020). We hope that Ovdan will light a candle at the edge of the tunnel for you as it did to us.“
