US progressive metal band EXIST has today announced their upcoming fourth album, Hijacking the Zeitgeist, due for release via Prosthetic Records on April 12.

Alongside the album announcement EXIST has shared the lead single and music video, Blue Light Infinite, directed by vocalist and guitarist Max Phelps (also of Cynic and Death To All).

Stream Blue Light Infinite via Apple Music, TIDAL, Deezer, Bandcamp and Spotify
Pre-order Hijacking the Zeitgeist here.

Speaking on the album announcement, Max Phelps (vocals and guitar) comments: “We’re very excited to finally announce the release of Hijacking The Zeitgeist after sitting on the finished record for quite some time. I think I can speak for all of us in saying that this was overall the most fun we’ve had making an album with EXIST.

“Musically I think it represents a new era for the band with both a heavier sound and much more compact arrangements. Maybe it’s fair to say that it’s akin to our “Permanent Waves” or “Moving Pictures” (for the Rush nerds, like us) in terms of the bands trajectory from the last few albums. We can’t wait for listeners to hear this album and are especially excited to perform these songs live. We’re also proud of the beautiful artwork painted for us by Sebastian Jerke.”

Of Blue Light Infinite, Phelps adds: “Blue Light Infinite is both our album opener and first single. It acts as the perfect setup to establish the context of Hijacking The Zeitgeist. The song clocks in at less than four minutes (historically short for us) yet still showcases the variety of styles and dynamics that can be found throughout the album.

“Lyrically the song is about the addictive and deceptive nature of our obsession with technology. The music video is meant to illustrate this, showing the parallel stories of four characters becoming obsessed with different subjects and going further and further down their respective niche rabbit holes toward despair.”

EXIST’s latest full-length sees the group expand upon their established dichotomy of extreme metal technicality and sanguine atmospherics with an intentionally more concise approach to songwriting, resulting in the most direct and emphatic album of their 14 year career.

Similarly to 2020’s Egoiista, EXIST took on a keen co-production role for Hijacking the Zeitgeist as recording sessions commenced in early 2022, with the band emphasising a collaborative approach to the songs arrangements. Drum co-production was handled by John Douglass (Mr. Bungle, Entheos and The Contortionist) before vocals were handled by Mike Semesky in the winter.

Hijacking the Zeitgeist’s sonic heft isn’t without its diaphanous counterpoints, as Phelps and new addition Charles Eron (guitar and synths) craft deceptively complex interplay on album high points in Thief of Joy (featuring Sanjay Kumar of Inferi and Wormhole), Blue Light Infinite and soaring closer Window to the All. EXIST’s sonorous sonic landscape is bolstered by immersive rhythmic lock-ins between Alex Weber (bass and vocals) and Brody Smith (drums), that shine in Anup Sastry’s mix and Kris Crummett’s mastering work.

At the core of Hijacking the Zeitgeist lies a multifaceted exploration of algorithmic rabbit holes, conspiratorial paranoia, and the universal traits that lie within humanity – these cautionary tales are tied together in striking detail with album art by Sebastian Jerke. EXIST treats both the allure and perils of both digital mazes and the real world, with equal parts wide eyed awe and horror.

Hijacking the Zeitgeist tracklist:
1. Blue Light Infinite
2. Thief of Joy
3. Hijacking the Zeitgeist
4. Funeral Toll
5. A Path to Nowhere
6. One Degree Removed From Human
7. Window to the All

EXIST is:
Max Phelps – Guitars and Vocals
Alex Weber – Bass and Vocals
Charles Eron – Guitars and Synths
Brody Taylor Smith – Drums

ERJA LYYTINEN Releases ‘Black Ocean’ Video Leading Up To Her “Diamonds On The Road” April UK Tour

Today, internationally acclaimed guitarist, and singer songwriter Erja Lyytinen has released a live video of “Black Ocean” to dovetail her Diamonds On The Road 10-date UK tour in April 2024. Tickets are available from https://erjalyytinen.com/tour.

Watch the “Black Ocean“ live video below.

The forthcoming UK tour is named after Erja’s live album Diamonds On The Road, that was originally released by Tuohi Records in October 2023. The album is available on Double CD, vinyl and digital HERE.

“I can’t wait to tour the UK in April,” says Erja. “2024 has kicked off at full speed. We’ve been doing shows on Finnish National TV and then we began our full Diamonds on The Road tour across Finland. We have performed at numerous rock clubs and theatres.”

“Right now, we are rehearsing for my first Symphony Orchestra gigs that will be held in a concert hall in Lohja, Finland. I’ve always loved The Moody Blues album “The Days of Future Passed” which was recorded together with the London Symphony Orchestra, so it’s very cool to get my own compositions arranged for a full orchestra.

Continues Erja, “This Spring will be an interesting ride! We will be visiting Australia and performing at the world-famous Byron Bay Blues Festival, which I am very much looking forward to, as I have never played there before.

“Finally heading to my favourite country, the UK for a 10-date tour with my band. We will be also playing in Scotland, where we haven’t played since 2019. It will also be wonderful to return to the HRH Blues festival after many years. I can’t wait to enjoy a pint in the local pubs during these two weeks and pop in to all the tea rooms I can possibly find!”

Some may argue that music is born in the studio, but it comes to life and evolves when performed live on stage. With a live album, there is no safety net. You get one shot at capturing those perfect moments and preserving them forever. Erja Lyytinen’s live album Diamonds On The Road is evident of this.

“When playing live, you’ve got one moment to get it right, and then the moment is gone,” says Erja. “There is no correcting stuff later. It is very raw and exciting to play and sing at the same time. The adrenaline runs through your body, and everything around you affects your performance.

Diamonds On The Road
marks Erja Lyytinen’s fourth live album, and follows on from Songs from the Road, Live in London, and Lockdown Live. The new album is the first concert release from the gifted guitarist to capture the post-Covid live experience. Diamonds On The Road is available to purchase HERE.

“Diamonds on the Road was recorded towards the end of our Spring tour in March 2023,” says Erja. “We played ten shows in a row, of which eight were sold out. The band had a good flow going, and the songs were rolling nicely.”

Erja attributes some of those changes to her equipment and repertoire of trusty axes. “Since my last live recording, my live guitar arsenal has grown quite a bit. I have five to six guitars, from Strats and Teles to custom-made guitars, on stage with me. It´s quite cool to dig out the different characteristics of each guitar. I´m using my road-worn Fender Custom Shop guitar on the songs “Black Ocean” and “Never Really Had You.” I had the guitar fine-tuned right before the tour and added it to my live arsenal. I feel as though it has been a sin to keep this Strat as my sofa guitar for years!”

The songs featured on Diamonds On The Road highlight the old, the new, the borrowed and the blues. “For the set list of the live album, we had a mixture of my favourite old songs and then a selection of the songs from my latest studio album, Waiting for The Daylight,” explains Erja. “We also recorded a Jimi Hendrix classic, “Crosstown Traffic.” I made my own version of it by playing the song using slide! It is so cool to play the song, and, on the recording, it is our first encore.”

Diamonds on The Road showcases Erja and the band doing what they do best, playing concerts for their fans. “I have always loved performing live, but now, I enjoy playing even more and saying this on behalf of my band; I think they do, too. Performing live is stronger, more relaxed, and empowering. I´m grateful to be a guitarist and singer who is giving her best for the audience each night. It is the best thing you can do with your pants on,” concludes Erja.

DARKNESS Reveal “Blood On Canvas “Album Details & Share Lyric Video for First Single ‘Roots Of Resistance’

Posted by tarjavirmakari on March 8, 2024

April 26, 2024 will see Essen, Germany-based thrashers DARKNESS unleash their most ferocious album to date! “Blood On Canvas” will be coming out on Massacre Records, the pre-sale has just started at https://lnk.to/bloodoncanvas

The new DARKNESS songs seem to be more aggressive and heavier than anything else in the band’s discography to date. Although it’s not a concept album, “Blood On Canvas” is not a mere collection of nine songs created in one period, but a multi-faceted sound painting, painted with the colors of wrath. While the album recordings had already begun in mid-October 2023, DARKNESS and guitarist Meik parted ways during the production process, meaning that “Blood On Canvas” was only recorded by the four band members Lee, Arnd, Ben and Lacky. Now, the band has welcomed a new member to their ranks, guitarist Dominik Rothe!

“We are happy to announce that Dominik Rothe has joined the formation as the new guitarist! With his impressive musical expertise, passion for guitar playing and thrash, Dominik will undoubtedly be a powerful addition to our sonic universe. We warmly invite all fans and supporters to experience Dominik at our upcoming performances and to celebrate the new album together with him and us.”

A lyric video for the first DARKNESS album single, “Roots Of Resistance”, is now premiering below! Get the song on all digital streaming services via: https://darkness.bfan.link/rootsofresistance

“During the first rehearsals for “Roots Of Resistance”, Lacky criticized the fact that the songs always start with an intro or a long prelude. He thought that a song could also start with a drum roll and then kick off. Then he spontaneously played one, and that’s exactly what ended up on the album,“ says guitarist Arnd about the new DARKNESS track. “Lyrically, the song has its origins in an old ’68 Sponti saying: “If you don’t fight back, you’re living wrong”. There were times when people stood up for their convictions, many fought for them, some accepted punishment or even death. The names have been forgotten today, their fight was pointless and hardly brought about any change.

What still counts are stock portfolios, wealth and profit. When people revolt or resist today, they are discredited and ridiculed. The “roots of resistance”, whoever or whatever they may have been, are buried and forgotten. What counts is “fuck, eat, watch TV”. So this song is an ode to indifference and ignorance.“

Musically, DARKNESS deliver the uncompromising and fast thrash metal they have been known for since their debut album “Death Squad” in 1987. However, the compositions on their forthcoming album are more complex and detailed than usual, without losing any of the aggression, heaviness and authenticity.

The nine songs were produced at Rambado Recording Studios in collaboration with Cornelius “Corny” Rambadt, with whom the previous albums “First Class Violence” and “Over And Out” were produced. For “Blood On Canvas”, DARKNESS and producer Corny set out to create an aggressive and powerful, but also honest sound. The cover artwork was once again created by Timon Kokott, with whom DARKNESS are collaborating for the third time.

Tracklist:

  1. Wake Up In A Rage
  2. A Couple Of Kills

BRUME Release New Single ‘New Sadder You’ from Forthcoming Album

BRUME demonstrate the exceptional range of their songwriting with the emotional roller-coaster ride ‘New Sadder You’, which is taken from their forthcoming new full-length “Marten” as the next single. The Bay Area goth-doom quartet’s third album is slated for release on May 3, 2024 via Magnetic Eye Records. The album pre-sale is available at THIS LOCATION

“I wrote this song for Jamie after his father passed away”, vocalist and bass player Susie McMullan reveals. “When someone you love dies, you mourn the loss of that loved one, you mourn the loss of the old happier, lighter version of you, but that new sadder you only exists, because you were lucky enough to have someone unconditionally love you!“

The video single ‘Next Sadder You’ is now premiering here:

BRUME (pronounced ‘Broom’) are living proof that California is not all sunshine and easy living. The San Francisco-based quartet organically blends doom metal, goth, and indie rock into a sometimes monolithic, sometimes delicate blend of heaviness that resides firmly on the darker side.

After a decade of sultry sounds and hair-raising crescendos, BRUME push sonic experimentation and delightful genre-bending even further on their third full-length “Marten”. The expansion into a four-piece with the addition of Jackie Perez Gratz on cello and vocals has opened a cosmos of new possibilities that the Californians determinedly explore. Weaving soaring melodies over melancholic doom pop generates songs that are equally intimate and haunting yet also massive and crushing.

BRUME originally formed as a trio in 2014 when guitarist Jamie McCathie from Bristol, England began making music with bass player and vocalist Susie McMullan from Baton Rouge, Louisiana after discovering a shared passion for both trip-hop and sludge. The addition of Jordan Perkins-Lewis on drums completed the line-up with his rich and experimental style of drumming, and set the stage for the band’s recordings.

The trio quickly gained momentum with their doom metal albums “Rooster” (2017) and “Rabbits” (2019), the former being named ‘Album of the Year’ by The Ripple Effect and the latter earning the top spot on Wonderbox Metal’s ‘Best of 2019’ list. BRUME also left their mark onstage, appearing at Desertfest London in 2017 and Desertfest New York and SXSW in 2019, along with many more shows on both sides of the Atlantic.

On third album “Marten”, BRUME perfectly balance the melancholic power of the cello with forceful vocals and dueling guitar conversations.  The complex mood swings that seamlessly move from sensuous and restrained to soaring and explosive found a perfect producer in Sonny DiPerri (EMMA RUTH RUNDLE, LORD HURON, PORTUGAL THE MAN). With the right engineer behind the board, the San Franciscans adopted a songwriting approach that emphasised poetry and lyrics rather than starting with a riff. This way of working uncovered a more vulnerable side of the band.

With “Marten”, BRUME take a bold step toward their musical future by challenging first themselves and now listeners to move from comfortable spaces toward more challenging, less familiar destinations.

Tracklist:

  1. Jimmy
  2. New Sadder You
  3. Faux Savior
  4. Otto’s Song
  5. How Rude
  6. Heed Me
  7. Run Your Mouth

Jordan Perkins Lewis – drums

CORRODED Joined by Cape Town’s COUNTERSTRIKE on Remix of ‘Monster’

Counterstrike; a hard drum and bass music producer duo from Cape Town, remix the CORRODED‘s Monster; a single from the new CORRODED album Plague (released end of 2023 on Despotz Records). The remix is released today, March 8th.

“Monster is one of the first songs that we wrote for the album, and we wanted that song to be the first single because it’s a Monster of a song. It’s a groovy semi fast paced song that we really like to play, and we hope that most of our fans will enjoy.”

Sweden’s CORRODED are known for blurring the lines between Black Sabbath and Machine Head. Their brilliant blend of Hard Rock and Alternative Metal has made them a unique, rare force of nature within the Metal Scene. Now joined by remixers Counterstrike; a hard drum and bass music producer duo from Cape Town consisting of Justin Scholtemeyer and Eaton Crous, and are known for their composition of raw, high-energy sound inspired by metal, techno and early techstep.

CORRODED is a heavy metal band from Ånge, Sweden. The break came in 2009 with the song Time And Again and debut album ‘Eleven Shades of Black’. Since then they’ve released four more albums, toured relentlessly (including several European tours, both on their own and as support for bands like Airbourne), had the théme song for the Swedish TV show Survivor (Expedition Robinson in Sweden) and music in the globally popular video game Battlefield. Their latest (5th) album ‘Bitter‘ was released in 2019, was followed by a European tour and ended the year with a slight change in line-up (long time member Tomas Andersson left the band). As for most bands, the pandemic hit hard, but the band dug themselves into a black hole and recorded their sixth album – ‘Plague’. They comment:

”-We’ve got 5 ”children”…each and everyone as much important as the other ones…but this one is our lovechild, our very special ”late bloomer” or ”trailing child”, born out of the anxiety and boredom of the plague…and, except from mastering, all done by ourselves…welcome to the dark soul of CORRODED..enjoy the ride..”
