SELBST Reveal “Despondency Chord Progressions” Album Details & First Song

In collaboration with Decibel magazine, Latin American Black Metal band SELBST unveil an entrancing first offering from their upcoming third album “Despondency Chord Progressions”. ‘Chant Of Self Confrontation’ beautifully contrasts icy riffs, thundering percussion and piercing vocals with moments of melodic respite which feature haunting clean vocals and captivating lead guitars.

Artist Fabio Rincones took care of the video production, also lending his talents to the album cover design. The visuals were captured in the scenic locales of Mérida (Venezuela) and Santiago (Chile).

Composer N delves into the narrative behind the song and video:

“Musically, it was one of the songs that flowed the fastest during the composition process and was the first one I worked on for this record, which somehow set the course for the rest of the songs. Compositionally, both guitars (lead and rhythm) don’t seem to go together or in unison throughout the whole song, but rather one passes through the other, presenting some slightly complex figures that could work perfectly on their own, but in this case, they are intertwined. Lyrically, the song is based on the internal struggles that an individual must endure, on how guilt, fear, or feeling tormented by a past event can pursue you. That’s why I instructed Fabio to develop this struggle and personify it in a figurative way if you will. He and his team achieved much more than that with the scenes of the girls, who also did an excellent job!

I also had the immense pleasure of meeting Alex from AVERSIO HUMANITATIS in person, here in Santiago, who was the first vocalist for SELBST years back. He is a friend, and an audiovisual director so he helped me with some shots of myself. He was here for a few days and took the time to chat and do the recordings. It was a really nice gesture from him, I really appreciate it.

I wanted to give this video a special touch compared to the one released a couple of years ago for the previous album. So, it was a very special and interesting experience to be in front of a camera for this purpose…“

The album “Despondency Chord Progressions” will be released via Debemur Morti Productions on April 19th. It showcases an accomplished blend of introspection and fervor, embodied in seven exquisitely crafted compositions flowing with passionate melodies:

01. La encarnación de todos los miedos
02. When True Loneliness Is Experienced
03. Third World Wretchedness
04. Chant Of Self Confrontation
05. The One Who Blackens Everything
06. Between Seclusion And Obsession
07. The Stench Of A Dead Spirit

N is responsible for all composition, music and lyrics. Guitars, bass and vocals were captured by N at Unpleasant Records. Drums were performed by Jonathan Heredia and recorded by Simón Da Silva of AVERSIO HUMANITATIS, who also mixed and mastered the album at The Empty Hall Studio.

N delves into the significance of the album’s title and its cover artwork:

“Following a bit of what was presented in my previous offering (“Relatos de Angustia“) and considering that there is no overarching theme connecting all the tracks as in a conceptual album, I wanted the title to somehow encompass the tone in terms of lyrics that were being expressed throughout the seven tracks that make up the entirety of this recording. For me, these themes bear witness to the times we are living in and that I have witnessed — discouraging and violent times where everything seems to be slowly but inexorably approaching an almost certain global decline. Also, because this time I allowed myself (or perhaps it just flowed this way) to explore musically some other textures that I hadn’t exploited before. I found the idea interesting that this perhaps more melancholic and musically mature aspect would also be somehow reflected in the title. Therefore, “Despondency Chord Progressions” I believe is a very open but at the same time precise way of defining what this record contains.

When it comes to the artwork: From the very moment of conception, all creatures are condemned to the overwhelming indifference of nature, and because of this, to death. This is something that we, as humans, cannot escape, being even weaker than many other species. I believe that the innate fragility of our species is reflected in this art, in addition to the indifference with which nature and life itself treat us along our tortuous path. This is why this artwork represents both the beginning and the end of our journey. All at once.“

SELBST‘s third album, “Despondency Chord Progressions,” is set for release across multiple formats – CD, vinyl, tape, and digital – via Debemur Morti Productions on April 19th. A new t-shirt design will accompany the launch. Pre-orders are available through our EU, US (no merch), and Bandcamp stores.

SELBST was formed 2010 in Venezuela by multi-instrumentalist/lyricist N and vocalist Frozen, releasing their initial demo “Veritas Filia Temporis” shortly afterwards. In 2016 N moved to Chile to search out new collaborators and opportunities. The resultant self-titled full-length, featuring vocals by N. Onfray of ANIMUS MORTIS, was released in 2017 to great underground acclaim.

In 2018 N became SELBST‘s lead vocalist and the project turned into a fully-fledged live band, taking to the stage for the first time as the next step of their evolution. The band unleashed second album, “Relatos de Angustia“, in 2020 – a universally praised, deep and challenging record which rewarded repeat listens.

SELBST subsequently honed their artistry and the band’s evolution into a formidable live act was marked by the 2023 digital release of live album, “Vortex Of Anguish And Death“.

As SELBST reaches its 14th year, visionary N is now poised to reveal the band’s third and most compelling album yet. Titled “Despondency Chord Progressions,” this landmark release will emerge on April 19th through Debemur Morti Productions and further refines the intricate, shadowy depths of their already sophisticated sound.

The nine-date tour will see Sayce perform songs from his forthcoming full-length album, The Wolves Are Coming, and selected songs from his previous releases. Sayce’s special guest on his forthcoming UK tour is British slide guitarist Troy Redfern.

Produced by Philip at Station House Studio in Los Angeles, and engineered by GRAMMY award winner Mark Rains (Rival Sons, Shooter Jennings, Tanya Tucker), mixed by Brian Moncarz (Fantastic Negrito, Alice Cooper, Ian Moore), and mastered by Brian Lucey (Lizzo, The Black Keys, Michael Bublé), The Wolves Are Coming features Michael Leasure on drums (Walter Trout, Edgar Winter), Fred Mandel (Queen, Supertramp, Elton John) on keyboards and piano, Bernie Barlow (The Moody Blues, Melissa Etheridge) on background vocals, Aaron Sterling on drums (John Mayer, Keith Urban, Taylor Swift), and Sayce, who provided the vocals, guitars, bass, and piano.

The Wolves Are Coming follows the album Spirit Rising which has over 14 million streams to date. This new album is a career highlight, exemplifying Sayce’s commitment to his craft and using the power of music as a uniting force to welcome in the light during incredibly turbulent times. Philip’s new album, is more powerful, unique, and bold than anything he has written or recorded. “These songs and stories came into focus during my darkest times,” says Philip.

“The new single, Black Moon, is a song about ruthless individuals that often pollute the music business,” says Philip. “It’s about being tricked, violated, hurt, and manipulated but still holding on to my personal power and self-worth, and trusting that these fools will one day end up laying in the bed they’ve made.”

On the new album, songs like “Oh! That Bitches Brew” and “Backstabber” hit like hurricanes, while “Lady Love Divine” explores the light in contrast to darkness. Balladslike “It’s Over Now” and the magical instrumental “Intuition” round out Sayce’s signature fuzz tones and sledgehammer mountain-sized drum grooves with delicate, intimate, and dynamic performances.

The bold and brash performance on “Oh! That Bitches Brew” turns out to be a musical interpretation of a memory that came flooding back to Philip one day.

“Oh! That Bitches Brew came together quite quickly one evening,” recalls Philip. “I was sitting on the couch and started playing the riff that became the song’s main riff. I dug it and thought, ‘What am I going to say about this? Oh, I know, I remember that time someone gave me a drink at a party called “The Bitches Brew”, and it totally fucked me up.’ And that’s what the song became.  It came together in about ten minutes.”

The second single, “Lady Love Divine” is an uplifting, foot-stomping, funk groove that delivers hooks in all the right places. Philip states, “It’s a funky, upbeat song about that feeling you get when you instantly fall in love with someone forever. Finding the courage to talk to this person and win their love. The song represents a bridge — a connection between despair and hope — that invites broken spirits to be transformed and healed.”

With the release of the third single, Philip gets to the point about “Backstabber”. “This is a song about fake friends and a ruthless music business. The lyrics speak loud and clear, and the weight of the track conveys the intensity of my feelings. It is a jungle out there; watch your back. This song also speaks to my life-long journey with OCD — named one of the ten most disabling disorders by the World Health Organization — and this burden that myself, and many others live with every day.”

The recording of The Wolves Are Coming proved to be an unforgettable experience for Philip.

“When I first started writing and recording these songs, society was upside down from the pandemic,” says Philip. “The studio became a real spirit-lifter for me during the sessions, a very fun and free atmosphere, as opposed to the outside world. I recorded with GRAMMY winning engineer Mark Rains at Station House Studio in Los Angeles during several different sessions over the course of a year or so.”

“I booked some three-day sessions, and we’d try recording the new songs I was writing. Michael Leasure played drums magnificently, tracking live with me during some of these sessions and then I would record overdubs with Mark and decide if a song was going to be a keeper. Mark mixed a few songs on the album including “Intuition” and you can really feel and hear the vibe and sound of the studio during the sessions. Brian Moncarz had brilliantly mixed songs on my previous album, Spirit Rising, so I just had to reach out to him with these new songs. He absolutely nailed it with his mixes taking The Wolves Are Coming to another level. It is a such a pleasure and privilege to work with this wonderful and talented team.”

On the forthcoming album, Philip consciously set out to achieve something new and different.

Says Philip, “I’m always striving to do something better today than what I’ve done before. I’m a student of music and life, and my intention for this album was to be more deeply connected to spirit, inspiration, and creativity, and to record and make this music to push myself as an artist.”

But what is it that makes “The Wolves Are Coming” so special?

“That’s easy, says Philip. “It’s a personal journey and a diary. These new songs and recordings became a lifeline to me during the pandemic and illustrate some of the highs and lows I have been navigating since releasing Spirit Rising in 2020. The Wolves Are Coming was created during the bleakest of times, not knowing if I would ever release these songs, or what being a musician and artist would look like moving forward.”

What does The Wolves Are Coming mean?

“It has a lot of meanings for me, which are definitely illustrated in some of these songs,” reflects Philip. “The title covers a lot of areas for me, and I encourage listeners to see what comes up for them personally when they hear this title and listen to the new songs. Some of these new songs, such as ‘Backstabber’, have a very obvious and personal meaning and relate directly to the album title, which I’ve discussed openly. While another obvious meaning is…to get myself in gear, to get going, and get moving!”

Philip is looking forward to performing the new songs on his upcoming tours.

“We’ve already been performing a few of the new tracks live and they feel great,” says Philip. “Oh! That Bitches Brew” was debuted live during our November 2023 UK tour, and we’ve been working up more of the new songs during rehearsals and soundchecks. Sam Bolle and Bryan Head are such outstanding musicians and we’ve been really bonding as a group during our live tours and through playing this new music together.”

On the new album, Philip has recorded an acoustic cover of John Lee Hooker’s “This Is Hip” which is deeply moving and a completely different gear from the rest of the album, featuring a duet with legendary pianist, Fred Mandel.

“I used to love listening to this song in the car with my father,” recalls Philip. “It was John Lee Hooker’s “This Is Hip” from the album Mr. Lucky, with Ry Cooder on guitar. What a great track and the song just always kind of stayed with me. I’d been playing it during live shows on solo acoustic, so we tracked it and Fred Mandel played exquisite piano on the recording. I think it’s fun!”

There has been no shortage of praise; Guitar World declared, “Philip Sayce stands on the edge of hard rock and psychedelia, slinging guitar riffs past your ears at warped speed.” Billboard Magazine has raved about Philip’s “outstanding songwriting” and “stylish rock guitar”, and Rock & Blues Muse effused, “With powerful vocals close to the edge, Sayce uses his classic Strat sound and overdriven amps to unwind a powerful tale. His guitar riffs are fastballs”, and Music News stated, “This is an all-out blast from the opening notes, massive riffs and pounding drums with Sayce’s vocals getting the full treatment.”

ABOUT PHILIP SAYCE
Born in Wales and raised in Toronto, Canada, Philip’s love of the guitar started early. As a teen, Philip was plucked from the Toronto blues scene by the legendary Jeff Healey, who took the young guitarist under his wing and showed him the ropes, touring the world and recording as a member of Healey’s band. From 2004 to 2009, Philip toured internationally and recorded with Melissa Etheridge, including performances at The Oscars and The Grammys. He then kick-started his solo career, establishing a rabid fan base in Europe and beyond. During this period, Sayce recorded his first solo album, Peace Machine. Buoyed by guitar fans’ response to the album, Philip returned his attention to his full-time solo artist career, and subsequent releases garnered high praise in both the blues, rock, and guitar worlds. He has since released six studio albums and the Live EP, Scorched Earth: Volume 1.

Vanden Plas, the esteemed German progressive rock group, is excited to reveal the upcoming release of their latest album, “The Empyrean Equation of the Long Lost Things” scheduled to drop on April 19th .

After a hiatus of four years since their last album, the band makes a triumphant return with an enthralling assortment of tracks, showcasing their unmatched musical skill and narrative artistry. Fans can get a taste of what’s in store with the release of the album’s lead single and accompanying video, “My Icarian Flight” available today.

Pre-order “The Empyrean Equation of the Long Lost Things”: https://orcd.co/vandenplasteeotllt

This album signifies a significant milestone for Vanden Plas as they welcome Alessandro Del Vecchio as their new keyboardist, infusing fresh vigour and creativity into the band’s dynamic line-up. Del Vecchio’s addition promises to push Vanden Plas’s sound to unprecedented levels while staying faithful to their distinctive style.

“The Empyrean Equation of the Long Lost Things” carries on the band’s legacy of pushing musical boundaries, melding intricate melodies with thought-provoking lyrics. It follows the footsteps of their acclaimed “The Ghost Xperiment” series, cementing Vanden Plas’s status as a leading force in the progressive rock genre.

Guitarist Stephan Lill, who chiefly crafted the compositions on the previous albums, takes sole charge of the music on “The Empyrean Equation of the Long Lost Things,” while Andy Kuntz contributes the lyrics and vocal lines as usual. Kuntz remarks, “I’ve admired Alessandro since our collaboration for his outstanding Frontiers Allstars project, where numerous renowned rock musicians participated. Though Alessandro couldn’t partake in the songwriting for this album due to time constraints, his playing has already enriched the songs and sound with various nuances. The new artistic dynamic is palpable in this production.”

Nevertheless, Vanden Plas remains faithful to their signature style: progressive rock infused with elements of elegy, melody, and metallic and epic influences. Furthermore, it’s evident that Vanden Plas is embracing a “back to the roots” direction.

With its fusion of technical prowess and emotional resonance, “The Empyrean Equation of the Long Lost Things” is poised to captivate audiences worldwide. Drawing inspiration from the imagery suggested by the lyrics’ concept, this album could be likened to the band rediscovering a lost jewel in the music universe after navigating through challenging experiences and losses.

  1. The Empyrean Equation Of The Long Lost Things
  2. My Icarian Flight
  3. Sanctimonarium
