Susan’s new “Snakebite” single is released today, Friday February 23, and is available, to stream at https://orcd.co/snakebite. The music video is available to view on YouTube HERE.

“On Snakebite, I wanted to achieve the darkest and most swampy point of the album,” says Santos. “It’s a poisoned love story narrated as if it were a duel to the death and at gunpoint in the Wild West.”

“The female protagonist feels enslaved, as if bitten by a snake, poisoned and it’s clear to her that she does not intend to waste her last bullet by sitting still while the poison makes its way through her veins. Sand, sweat and a whistle in the background.”

Sonorais Santos’ sixth studio album. The album title encapsulates the overall vibe that permeates throughout the eight songs. Although each of the album tracks vary in style, they all share a common thread – the desert. Sonora is the first that that Santos fully identities in more ways than one. The album is diverse and encompasses guitar styles that ranges from Western to psychedelia.

Sonorawas recorded at Black Betty Studios in Madrid, and produced by Santos and Jose Nortes.

All songs. composed by Susan Santos, were recorded as a trio featuring David Salvador (bass) and Juli El Lento (drums). Santos sang lead vocals and played electric, baritone, and acoustic guitars, banjo, and theremin.

Sonora is the album of the desert, and the desert people. The songs tell stories ranging from survival, thirst, outlaws, escape, and freedom against a backdrop of scorpions, lizards, and roadrunners. Before listening, it is highly recommended to embark on your road journey with a full tank, and don’t pick up any hitchhikers.

Based in Madrid, Susan Santos is a passionate, self-taught left-hand guitarist. She writes her own songs that reflect her signature blend of rhythm and textures. She is a creative force in the guitar world, and a truly unique artist in her own right.

The gifted Spanish guitarist and singer songwriter has spent years performing in famous establishments and venues, and numerous festivals throughout Europe, Mexico, and America.

She has shared the stage with ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons and won “Best Musician Performance” at the 2018 European Blues Awards, and “Best Female Album” at the 2019 LA Critics’ Awards.

SONARA – TRACK BY TRACK

1. Hot Rod Lady

The song begins with a powerful riff with baritone guitar. It’s a rock blues mix with a modern sound. The song tells the story of a woman who drives through the desert and breaks all the speed limits. She quenches her thirst with cans of beer that she drinks in one gulp. She squeezes the empty cans and throws them to the side of the road. Always under the hypnotic roar of the engine and the modified amps, the only way to keep her sanity is by leaving a vast trail of dust, lovers, broken hearts, and empty bottles in her wake.

2. Snakebite

I wanted to achieve the darkest and swampiest point on the album. A poisoned love story narrated as if it were a duel to the death at gunpoint in the Wild West. She feels enslaved, as if bitten by a snake. It is clear to her that she does not intend to waste her last bullet by sitting around while the poison makes its way through her veins.

3. So Long
It is a very funny song with touches of American rock. The song conveys an air of hope, melancholy, and a desire to return home. The song’s protagonist makes a stop at the last motel before getting lost. The neon lights on the sign are flashing and the swimming pool is empty. Inside the room, she contemplates the ashes of her past, the broken dishes, and disappointments, and the defeats.

4. Have Mercy
I wanted to write a song in the style of all those country singers from the 50s of which I am a big fan of. The song is about a woman in a bar talking to a handsome stranger. Tomorrow, voluntarily or involuntarily, nobody will remember anything. As long as the bar remains open, the fantasy will endure. “Put another song on the jukebox and may God have mercy on your soul. Here’s to never seeing each other again to the bleak sight of an empty glass.”

5. What I Want

This rock song was a lot of fun to record and features double guitars in the guitar solo. It is a statement of what we all want in life. To be proud of what we really want, and not to be worried about criticism. You only get one life, so enjoy the ride. The lyrics say it all – “I do what I want and when I want, and I never look back. No one will ever tell me how to live my life.”

6. Voodoo Wheels
This is the rockabilly song on the album. Her only lover is her Cadillac. She feels like a Goddess under the neon lights. She’s possessed by the voodoo of rims. She feels free and wild. Anything is possible. She may end up as a movie star, or she will be seen on TV bathed in champagne and diamonds. She drives to 4-46 junction in Cholame, California, where she reminisces about James Dean.

7. Call Me Tonight

This song is probably the fun highpoint of the album. I would describe it as soul pop. It’s about the longing and hope for love; for a phone call that will make this night a night to remember.

8. Let It Ride

The song has two parts. It’s two songs in one. The first part has a Hendrix vibe. The second part is darker and more psychedelic, with lots of improvisational guitar solos, including the theremin. The protagonist of the story is a sexy casino hustler who wears her best dresses and cheating heels. She feels alive gambling and cheating at Blackjack. She is pursued by the law, but feels more alive than ever, playing the part of a devilish female outlaw.

THE ANIX & JULIEN-K Release New Single ‘Crawl’

Posted by tarjavirmakari on February 23, 2024
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: JULIEN-K, THE ANIX. Leave a comment

A few years ago beloved electro-rock artists Julien-K and The Anix joined forces in what they referred to then as an Alt Universe concept and brought fans the much beloved “Your Lies Are Like Fire.” Today they have joined forces once more for a brand new Alternative Rock single “CRAWL.”

Featuring provocative lyrics and a soul performance from The Anix in collaboration with Julien-K’s fused with futuristic, heavy, distorted and chopped. The energetic track is an homage to early 2000’s core the early stages of their careers when both artists were heavily experimenting with futuristic sounds. The song draws on a wealth of human experience both from their careers and relationship experiences. “There is a lyric in the chorus,” explains The Anix.“Watch us fall into the dirt, watch us crawl” which is in reference to what would happen if you are in the never ending rat race chasing things, inevitably you would end up in the dirt, or buried under it. The more I let go, and just go along for the ride, the more satisfaction I get. Learning to appreciate the ride, and not seek the end point is the most rewarding part. Example, when you are eating an incredible meal, you never want it to end, you want to just stay in that state of joy that is only present while in the act. You don’t eat your meal with the goal of the empty plate, you eat it to enjoy it. Same goes for listening to a song- you wouldn’t play your favorite track with the goal of the silence at the end of the track. You play it to experience what it brings to your life DURING the track.”

Purchase/Stream: https://link.fixtmusic.com/CRAWL

“CRAWL” (feat. Julien-K) is visit to the past and a vision of the future. Pulsing drums intertwine with bass, and captivating synths for overall melancholy but energetic mood. The Anix and Julien-K have harnessed their collective creativity to produce a track that not only pays homage to their influences but also crosses over into new places and new sounds. “I wanted this song to kick off my new album cycle by bringing things back to what originally inspired The Anix project,” explains The Anix. “Electronic based alternative rock at its core. It was incredibly fun to approach the song with the mindset I was in 15 years ago, but with the new wealth of knowledge and technology I currently have at my disposal.”

The Anix is the alternative / electro-rock project of Los Angeles artist/producer Brandon Smith. Known for pushing creative boundaries with his genre-bending mix of alternative rock with dark melancholic undertones drenched in an array of synthesizers, The Anix’s music has captured the attention of global editorial curators with prominent features across official playlists from Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Yandex Music, and more. The Anix has received press support from outlets like Revolver, Billboard, Substream, and Outburn magazines as well as features in TV and video game franchises including Call of Duty, DC Comics, Sony Playstation, Destiny, Mass Effect, and WWE.

Amir Derakh, Ryan Shuck and Anthony “Fu” Valcic have been musical collaborators for 15+ years. During their time together they have weaved in and out of mainstream music like a constantly evolving musical fashion house. In the late 90’s they were responsible for massive radio and sales hits such as “Blind” (Korn), “Blue Monday”,” Stitches”, and “Fiction” (Orgy), “Crawl Back In” and “Let Down” (Dead By Sunrise with their close friend Chester Bennington). After enjoying years of traditional music business success, they have spent the last decade methodically moving away from the mainstream approach that put them on the map, opting to carefully steer their fans in a new direction, towards their new independent alternative industrial rock project Julien-K.

HEAVY TEMPLE Unveil New Video Single ‘Hiraeth’ from Forthcoming Album

Posted by tarjavirmakari on February 23, 2024

[photo by Crystal Engel Mama Moon]

Psychedelic doom fast-risers HEAVY TEMPLE release the video single ‘Hiraeth’ as the second track from their forthcoming sophomore full-length “Garden of Heathens”, which is scheduled for release on April 12 via Magnetic Eye Records. The album pre-sale is available at http://lnk.spkr.media/heavy-temple-garden

The video ‘Hiraeth’, which takes its title from a Welsh (Cymraeg) word that means something along the lines of “longing homesickness” and may be used similar to the Portuguese term ‘fado’, is now streaming here:

HEAVY TEMPLE comment: “The Celtic word ‘Hiraeth’ is considered to be intranslatable but has come to mean ‘a homesickness for a place that you can never return to or that never was’ in English“, singer and bass player High Priestess Nighthawk explains. “I started writing these lyrics about a deep-seated imposter syndrome. Now I think that the song is also about feeling small. When you are not only struggling to prevent yourself from disappearing, but trying hard to regain who you are: ‘How can I love anyone when I don’t even like myself?’.“

Tracklist

  1. Extreme Indifference to Life
  2. Hiraeth
  3. Divine Indiscretion
  4. House of Warship
  5. Snake Oil (and Other Remedies)
  6. In the Garden of Heathens
  7. Jesus Wept
  8. Psychomanteum

HEAVY TEMPLE are back. Back from touring across the United States as well as finding adventure and making new friends in Europe for the first time. Back from the rehearsal room where the making of new songs became far more of a group effort than on the debut album. And back from Animal Farm studio where John Forrestal gave the new album “Garden of Heathens” a rich and warm organic sound that is also crisp and crystalline.

Where the debut full-length “Lupi Amoris” charged forward like a roaring mastodon, “Garden of Heathens” comes across more diverse and sophisticated without losing punch or heaviness. And while the powerful vocals of frontwoman High Priestess Nighthawk provide a strong gravitational pull, HEAVY TEMPLE always remain a riff-first kind of band. Even so, the heavy-touring Philadelphia, PA trio have expanded their range to encompass an even wider breadth of rock and metal road stops, from BARONESS to THE BEATLES and  BLACK SABBATH to FU MANCHU – with many crossroads in between.

Wherever HEAVY TEMPLE are heading on this diverse and dynamic record, they always stay real with both feet on the ground. Except, that is, when it comes to the lyrics. With her words, the High Priestess admits to peddling a version of things that isn’t real – with a grim smile and quite deliberately so. In fact, that’s the theme running through “Garden of Heathens” as a red thread. From the American Dream to relationships, below the surface there is anxiety, betrayal, and doubt. And while some of the lyrical metaphors might at first glance seem to focus on religion, they are definitely not that literal. Rather, these are Nighthawk’s most personal lyrics ever.

HEAVY TEMPLE came into existence on the 2012 winter solstice during a night filled with the pure enjoyment of creating and playing heavy music. Once established, they drew a steadily growing flock to local shows in Philly, and soon gladly accepted invitations to tour alongside such notables as RUBY THE HATCHET, MOTHERSHIP, ROYAL THUNDER, and CORROSION OF CONFORMITY as well as performances at notable festivals such as The Maryland Doom Fest, Psycho Las Vegas, and Decibel Metal & Beer, among many others.

Following the two EPs “Heavy Temple” (2014) and “Chassit” (2016) and a number of singles, HEAVY TEMPLE at last took a break from heavy touring to record their first full-length. “Lupi Amoris” (“Wolves of Love”) was released in 2021 to strong applause from both critics and followers alike. This album opened new doors including more festival appearances, a US tour with THE OBSESSED and their first tour of Europe with friends and labelmates HOWLING GIANT.

HEAVY TEMPLE are not just back, they are here to stay. “Garden of Heathens” gives strong testimony that the trio is pushing hard to broaden their spectrum and break through any preconceptions and obstacles in front of them. “Garden of Heathens” sheds new light and a wider perspective on heavy and desert rock, psychedelia, and doom metal. Check this out!

NORTH SEA ECHOES Release Music Video for New Single ‘Empty’, Debut Album Out Today

Posted by tarjavirmakari on February 23, 2024
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: NORTH SEA ECHOES. Leave a comment

North Sea Echoes, the new band featuring Fates Warning members Ray Alder and Jim Matheos, have released their debut full-length, ‘Really Good Terrible Things‘, today, February 23rd, on Metal Blade. To commemorate the occasion, the duo has unveiled a music video for their new single, “Empty“, which can be seen below. When asked what fans can expect from the new track, Alder keeps it short and not-so-sweet, “I think this one is pretty dark.”

What press is saying about ‘Really Good Terrible Things‘:

“Really Good Terrible Things is a force of nature in its own right, and is worthy of repeated listens from metalheads and non-metalheads alike.” – Sonic Perspectives

“an album that rewards multiple listens and opens up new sonic moods and territories.” – Cryptic Rock

“Really Good Terrible Things is neither good nor terrible. These songs are really great things.” – Progressive Music Planet

ORDER HERE

‘Really Good Terrible Things‘ (Tracklist)
01. Open Book
02. Flowers in Decay
03. Unmoved
04. Throwing Stones
05. Empty
06. The Mission
07. Where I’m From
08. We Move Around the Sun
09. Touch the Sky
10. No Maps

Ray Alder and Jim Matheos’ musical legacy is vast and lauded, both as collaborators and individuals. Alder has been the vocalist and main co-writer for prog metal heroes Fates Warning for the past 35 years. With them, he has recorded 10 albums between 1988 (No Exit) and 2020 (Long Day Good Night). Further rounding out his discography are seven albums with Redemption, two solo albums, and the band A-Z with Mark Zonder, which debuted in 2022.

Prolific and pioneering guitarist/producer Matheos is a co-founder of Fates Warning, the lineup debuting with 1984’s Night on Bröcken on Metal Blade. In addition to 13 albums with Fates, Matheos’ myriad other work includes several solo albums, four albums alongside former Dream Theater keyboardist Kevin Moore, under the name OSI, and new band, Kings of Mercia, a lineup that’s been termed “a hybrid; it’s heavy, but not metal.”

“Throughout Really Good Terrible Things, Matheos and Alder serve up the kind of seductive melancholy Fates Warning fans will recognize,” says Jeff Wagner, author of the Fates Warning book Destination Onward. “Yet there’s a thoroughly different approach here: vocals are delivered with a sort of nostalgic sadness, and the guitar work is layered in such a way as to feel dreamlike. These are rich sonic landscapes, visiting places haunting, beautiful, spectral and secret. The Matheos/Alder partnership is taken to some new and wonderful places here,” Wagner concludes.

Really Good Terrible Things shows the breadth and versatility of the acclaimed pair, along with a freshness that belies their long musical partnership. “We both still love making music and we really enjoy working together. There’s a good amount of chemistry there, I think,” Matheos shares. “We both know what to expect from each other.“

About Kimmo Kuusniemi

Finnish-born visionary, Kimmo Kuusniemi stands at the intersection of art, music, film, and environmental advocacy. In the late 1970s, Kuusniemi established the legendary band Sarcofagus. Blending progressive and experimental elements with heavy rock, Sarcofagus crafted a version of heavy metal that was distinctly ahead of its time. Always at the vanguard of innovation, Kuusniemi has consistently harnessed the latest technology to expand his artistic expression.
In 1981, showcasing his forward-thinking prowess, Kuusniemi produced and directed a full album length broadcast quality music video for his third album, Kimmo Kuusniemi Band “Moottorilinnut”. Coincidentally, this was the same year MTV made its debut in the USA, signalling the onset of a new era for music and visual media. Though MTV was launching on the other side of the Atlantic, Kuusniemi’s ambitious project underscored his position at the forefront of the evolving music-video landscape.

In the 1980s, Kuusniemi ventured deeply into environmental film-making. He produced a series of informational short films and documentaries highlighting various environmental topics, aimed at educating and raising public awareness.

This commitment to environmental consciousness culminated in the 1991 with the Double Vision’s “Dream On” project—a compelling film and extended single produced for the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). More than three decades ago, “Dream On” music video projected a cautionary tale of an impending environmental crisis. Disturbingly, the future once envisioned by the “Dream On” project has now become our present reality, showcasing humanity’s prolonged inaction.
Following “Dream On”, Kuusniemi continued to make his mark in the realm of film and television. He produced several TV documentaries that achieved international distribution.
Among his most notable works is the groundbreaking 8-hour adventure/history TV series, “Baltic Sea Adventure/Hunt For U479,” which garnered widespread acclaim and captivated audiences globally.
Whether through his compelling documentaries, informational films, or innovative projects like the Ancient Streaming Assembly, Kuusniemi’s work continues to intertwine ancestral wisdom with the pressing concerns of the modern world. His efforts resonate with the imperative need to harmonise with nature, drawing insights from the past and weaving them into the tapestry of today’s narrative.

COBRA 1981 Release Third Single ‘Kuun Kirkas Valo’, Debut Album Out March 22nd

The Moon has given inspiration to poems, stories and songs throughout the ages. The light it reflects is more mysterious than sunlight and the shadows it creates are deeper and darker. The full moon is still a chapter in its own. Its echoes can unsettle the human mind and summon up nocturnal beasts. Cobra 1981‘s latest single Kuun kirkas valo (Bright Light of the Moon) is a traditional werewolf tale. The full moon makes the narrator thirsty to do things he might not want to do. However, as a counterforce, love can calm a restless mind.

Cobra 1981 comes from the Finnish countryside, where the darkness and silence are felt more strongly than in larger cities. The moonlight has a powerful effect on the landscape. So powerful, in fact, that it has inspired the band to write several moon-themed songs. The single has NWOBHM influences and a strong grip on their interpretation. After all, the songs were originally composed in the golden years of British heavy metal in the 1980s.

Kuun kirkas valo is the band’s third single release and continues Cobra 1981’s long journey towards the dream of releasing an album. A dream that was awakened over forty years ago! The debut album “VOL1” will see the light of day on March 22. The singles Vanha kuoma and Yön salamat, which have been released so far, have attracted attention not only in Finland but also around the world, including Australia, Japan and South America.
