Genre-Defying Duo LETHE Reveal “Alienation” Album Details + New Single & Video

Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: LETHE. Leave a comment

Following the inevitable delays that the past few years have wrought on new releases, LETHE are finally back with their third full-length album, scheduled for release on Dark Essence Records on the 24th April.

Titled “Alienation” the album continues to explore LETHE’s  idiosyncratic soundscapes, described variously as “genre-bending”, “style-bastardization”, “eclectic”, and even “just plain weird”.  However, this time the Swiss/Norwegian duo of Tor-Helge Skei (MANES, MANII etc.) and Anna Murphy (CELLAR DARLING, ex-ELUVEITIE) also dip their toes into new territories.

And, whilst waiting for the release date to arrive, Dark Essence Records have today released “Erosion” a track taken from the album, and about which LETHE had this to say:

It’s hard to pick out one song to represent the album, but ‘Erosion’ might give a little clue about what you can expect from the “Alienation”.  Or not.. Joining us on the song are Tor Arne Helgesen on drums, Eivind Fjøseide on guitars and Marita Hellem on vocals.

“Erosion” can be downloaded or streamed on various services at: https://link.darkessencerecords.no/Lethe_Erosion

Accompanying the single is a video comprised of clips taken from  ‘Point of Return’ (University of Oklahoma), which can be seen at:

Formed in 2012, and taking their name from one of the five rivers in Hades in Greek mythology, LETHE was originally created as a home for Anna and Tor-Helge’s musical and artistic experimentation. And, right from the start, the duo made it very clear that the only rule is that there are no rules, no expectations and no compromises.

This has resulted in the band being able to experiment on every level, whilst being absolutely unafraid of  incorporating melody and catchiness into their sound.  LETHE’s music is therefore  quite personal and different.  A unique melting pot of dark rock, pop, electronic, experimentation and metal, filled with an atmosphere that is cold and harsh and interwoven with beautiful melodies and mesmerizing grooves.

With artwork by Tom Korsvold “Alienation” will be available in CD, Digital and Limited Edition Purple Vinyl, and track listing is as follows:

  1. Anhedonia
  2. Brighter
  3. When it’s Over
  4. Éternel
  5. Crossroads
  6. Sedator
  7. Erosion
  8. Worm

“Alienation” is now available to pre-order from:

Webshop: https://darkessencerecords.no/shop/
Bandcamp:  https://lethemetal.bandcamp.com/album/alienation
US Webshop: https://darkessence.indiemerch.com

Commenting on the album, LETHE explained that:

“Alienation”  took years longer than planned, because of a lot of things, circumstances far beyond our control, but it’s finally here! The 3rd chapter of the Lethe saga! As always, it’s an eclectic blend of expressions and atmospheres and moods, and not many defined borders, styles or rules.. Lyrically it’s about being outsiders, outcasts, and alienated in various forms, mentally, physically, ideologic(ally).. and musically.. (hence the album title).. So, join us on another journey, a personal and alternate one..

THE QUILL Release New Single & Video ‘Wheel Of Illusion’

The Quill present “Wheel Of Illusion” – the first single and also title track from the upcoming album out 29.03.24. at Metalville Records.

This song is a real testament of what the new album is all about. You want heavy? You want groove? You want strong melodies? The Quill got you covered!”

The iconic Swedish hard rock band, unveils their musical prowess in their highly anticipated 11th album, “Wheel of Illusion.” With a storied history dating back to the early ’90s, The Quill has consistently pushed boundaries, blending powerful riffs and soulful melodies.

Roger – „Making new music is always hard work – but by now we all know what we need to make a great album. The writing-process is really where we gel as a band. We’ve always loved banging out ideas together in rehearsals – it’s always been a team effort with everyone pitching in trying to make every song the best possible.“

“Wheel of Illusion” promises to be a sonic journey, showcasing the band’s evolution while staying true to their hard rock roots. From the thunderous drum beats to the searing guitar solos, each track is a testament to The Quill’s enduring commitment to delivering a raw and authentic sound.

Christian – „Even though we have a well defined sound by now, firmly rooted in the classic rock of the 70’s, we always try to find new ways of adding sounds and influences to our music. This time we found hints of early British NWOBHM creeping in, we also used some old vintage keyboards which added a bit of a different flavour to keep things fresh.“

The album explores themes of introspection, resilience, and the enigmatic nature of reality. With lyrics that resonate and music that captivates, “Wheel of Illusion” is poised to become a defining chapter in The Quill’s musical legacy.

Jolle – „We were extremely well rehearsed before entering the studio – which is not always the case. For Earthrise we started with sketches in the studio, this time it was the opposite – we worked really hard arranging the songs in rehearsals so once we entered the studio the process was quick and to the point.“

As the band continues to carve their niche in the international rock scene, this album reaffirms their status as pioneers of the Swedish hard rock movement. “Wheel of Illusion” is not just an album; it’s a testament to The Quill’s unwavering passion for creating music that transcends time and resonates with fans worldwide.

Magnus – “Wheel of Illusion” is by far the most consistent and well conceived album we’ve ever made. Every note on the album is there for a reason and there’s no excess luggage at all. I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved – it’s classic The Quill even though you’ll find surprises along the way!“

THE PROGRESSIVE SOULS COLLECTIVE present their new singe “Destroy Chemistry”,  taken from the forthcoming studio album “Sonic Rebirth” wich will be released on March 15th 2024 on Metalville Records.

“Destroy Chemistry”” is one of the heaviest TPSC songs and features complex guitar riffs with alternate and downstroke picking. Musically and lyrically, there are borrowings from the well-known TPSC songs “A Formula For Happiness” and “Hurt” from the 2020 debut album “Sonic Birth” as part of a futuristic melange. The powerful bass and drum sound lays a truly massive foundation for head-nodding!

Finally! Now it’s time for the follow-up album to the debut “Sonic Birth” (2020) which received praise by both fans and critics, this time with a modified line-up.

TPSC are back with full force! The new release can once again be characterized as progressive metal with a range of elements of the entire progressive genre, this time with even more prog, more catchy melodies, but also more metal and heaviness.

“Sonic Rebirth” marks the logical continuation of its predecessor “Sonic Birth”, and can be understood as the second part of a musical, lyrical and overall sonic concept. With this record to already be the second concept album released by TPSC listeners can find elements they might recognize from the first album such as quotes, references, motifs and melodies besides a lot of new elements. Thematically, both “Sonic Birth” and “Sonic Rebirth” touch on the topic of human development and technology, visually characterized by the robot embryo as a major part of the artwork on both album covers.

The new studio album will once again feature some incredible musicians such as Vladimir Lalic (lead vocals), Megan Burtt (Gingerbomb), Jamie Powell & Simen Daniel Lindstad Børven (Leprous) on bass, Gerald Peter (known for his solo project & his work with Dream Theater’s Jordan Rudess on his Rockestra project & Cirque du Soleil providing keyboard leads & piano, TPSC live drummer Tim Korycki (Tomorrow’s Eve) plus appearances by Adam Marko (drums) & Zsolt Kaltenecker (keys) from SPECIAL PROVIDENCE, Luis Conte (Eric Clapton, Phil Collins) on percussions, Damiano Della Torre (Luciano Pavarotti, Terence Trent D’Arby, Tom Jones, Joe Cocker) on accordion, and many more!

“Sonic Rebirth” was mastered by Reuben Cohen from Lurssen Mastering who have won multiple Grammy Awards, and who is also known for his work with legends such as Metallica and many other greats.

Mastermind and guitarist Florian Zepf once more was in charge of all compositions and the production.

Conceptionally „Sonic Rebirth“ consists of a total of eight parts. The tracks blend into each other so that the listener can get immersed into futuristic soundscapes and has an uninterrupted and progressive listening experience. “Sonic Rebirth“ is an organic prog-metal album and the logical continuation of the debut with a new generation of top musicians from the prog genre. TPSC are back!

JAY ASTON’S GENE LOVES JEZEBEL Return with New Lyric Video ‘Serpent Queen’, Announce Massive US Tour with THE ALARM & BELOUIS SOME

Posted by tarjavirmakari on February 17, 2024

Jay Aston, the driving force behind the indomitable, critically acclaimed rock outfit Jay Aston’s Gene Loves Jezebel, has once again summoned the essence of the group’s iconic sound with their latest studio album, X – Love Death Sorrow. Released across all formats on December 1, the album represents a culmination of the band’s collective artistry. With the steadfast collaboration of esteemed guitarist James Stevenson (renowned for his work with The Alarm, Gen X, The Cult) and seasoned bassist Peter Rizzo, along with the return of acclaimed producer Peter Walsh, known for his instrumental role in crafting the band’s classic ’80s albums, X – Love Death Sorrow delivers a compelling blend of original compositions and captivating cover songs. This latest offering stands as a testament to the band’s enduring legacy and serves as one of the most formidable additions to their extensive discography.

One of the most popular tracks on X, “Serpent Queen,” is also one of the album’s darkest and most haunting. An original written by Aston and Rizzo, “Serpent Queen” draws inspiration from ancient depictions of dangerously enchanting females with such beguiling beauty that it threatens the very life of the unfortunate beholder. Appropriately, the band is releasing a lyric video for the track today, the day after Valentine’s Day, offering a bit of a contrast to the rosy depiction of love celebrated on that day.

But that’s not all! Jay Aston’s Gene Loves Jezebel is thrilled to reveal a major announcement: they will be embarking on a cross-country US tour alongside The Alarm and Belouis Some, set to kick off in May. This highly anticipated tour promises to be a must-see event for fans of both bands, offering a unique opportunity to experience their electrifying live performances in venues across the nation.

VANIR Release New Album “Epitome”, Out Now

VANIR is one of Denmark’s most prominent melodic death metal bands and has, since the band’s inception, released six full-length albums. And today they unleash their seventh beast, titled “Epitome”.

The theme of this new opus is the Danish middle-ages, with two songs branching into the Renaissance (“Wood Iron And Will” and the early middle-age “Blood Eagle”). The core of the album’s theme is the throne and the battles fought to keep it or to cement its power.

The first single of the album, “Twisting The Knife”, was written about The Stockholm Bloodbath, which was a trial that led to a series of executions in Stockholm between the 7th and the 9th of November 1520. The siege of Arkona in 1169, led by the Danish and Pomeranian forces under Valdemar I, is the beginning point for “Fall of Arkona”. Finally, a song about strength, valour and courage (“One Man Army”) completed the singles trilogy of the record.

The “Epitome” album cover is a depiction of the Danish queen Sorte Grethe (Black Greta). In her own time, Margaret had a reputation as a competent and enlightened regent. Regent Margaret was faced with the unresolved conflict between the crown and the archbishop. The song “Sorte Grethe”, on the album, is about a bloody battle where 12.000 men were killed to protect her sons’ right to the crown.

“Epitome” is out today on CD, LP (black vinyl, limited to 300) and digital formats via Mighty Music. It can be ordered here.

Vanir has been around for more than 10 years and has evolved a lot since the band’s beginning. With the last three records, and now with “Epitome”, Vanir shows its hard edge and catchy melodic death metal.

From the Sagas of old to the halls of kings and the bloody battlefields, Vanir’s music has been put together, without compromise, with a fascination with Scandinavian common origins, and the blood spilled throughout history.
