ANCIIENTS Release New Version of ‘Built to Die’

ANCIIENTS are bound for a big comeback later this year with the release of their long-awaited third album.

Last month, the JUNO award winners released a re-recorded version of a fan favorite to flex the cosmic muscle of their new lineup. Today, these hard-rocking Canucks are releasing another re-recording. Only this time, they’re tuning up an old bonus track that’s turned into a set list staple.

Anciients first came into existence back in 2011, though Kenny Cook (vocals, guitar), Chris Dyck (guitar) and Aaron “Boon” Gustafson (bass) had already played in a band together. Their potent chemistry, joined with drummer Mike Hannay, spilled over into Heart of Oak, which landed the band an opening slot on tour with Lamb of God, as well as on the long list for a JUNO and the 2013 Polaris Music Prize.

After their second album, Voice of the Void, won a JUNO in 2018 for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year, Anciients underwent several line-up changes. They’re now joined by bassist Rory O’Brien and Brock MacInnes on rhythm guitar.

“Built to Die” tests the horsepower of Anciient’s new engine. A fuzz guitar revs right out of the gate, as if shot out of a cannon by the song’s gargantuan opening roar. What follows is a neck-and-neck drag race between that garage rock riff and double bass kicks that pump with the speed and precision of twin-cylinder pistons. “Goodbye friends / Hello death”, Cook sings with a throat full of melody before he’s swallowed by the low-end’s greasy chug.

“We’re excited to share a re-recorded version of ‘Built to Die'”, Cook says. “This was the first song written for Anciients, so it seemed like a fun idea to record it again with our current lineup. It was originally recorded by Shawn Penner for our Snakebeard EP way back in 2011. It was a great experience to bring it back to life, but this time with Jesse Gander producing it. Hope you all enjoy this new version!”

Anciients’ new album will come out later this year.

ANCIENT SETTLERS have signed a multi-album deal with Scarlet Records.

Founded in 2020 in Donostia/San Sebastián (Basque Country/Spain), Ancient Settlers is a divergent modern melodic death metal band composed of five musicians all sharing Venezuelan heritage.

Ancient Settlers aim to explore the boundaries of melodic death metal, incorporating catchy guitar riffs, melodies, synths, keyboards, and various sounds and rhythms to develop their own musical identity.

The band draws inspiration from the recent tragedies that have affected the human race and delves into the impact of these events on the Earth, spreading a message of rebellion, resilience and hope to those who are willing to listen.

Throughout their relatively short career, Ancient Settlers have collaborated with renowned music producers such as Fredrik Nordstrom (In Flames, Opeth, Architects, Bring Me The Horizon), Daniel Cardoso (Angelus Apatrida, Noctem, Anneke Van Grisbergen) and Pedro J. Monge (Rise To Fall, Feelingless, Vhaldemar).

Ancient Settlers have already embarked on three European tours: the ‘Autumnus Europe Tour’ (France, Spain, Portugal), ‘Our Last Eclipse Europe Tour’ (Spain, Portugal, France, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium) and the ‘Transition Europe Tour’ (Spain, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic). They shared the stage with bands such as Infected Rain, Defacing God, Amberian Dawn, Sirenia, Lutharo and Elegant Weapons at various venues and festivals across Europe.

Live Report: PANTERA Concert on February 9th 2024 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville Tennesee

Live Report and all the photos by Erik Hernandez

The story of PANTERA goes all the way back to the 1980’s. A time when even Phillip Anselmo wasn’t in the band. Through hard work and determination, Pantera rose through the metal ranks and became one of the best-selling Metal bands in history. It wouldn’t last, and tragedy would take the Abbott brothers away from us. The world was void of Pantera for over two decades. There would be rumors that a Pantera “reunion” was going to happen, but it never did…until it did.

Fast forward to this month and Pantera is back with a new lineup that consists of Phil Anselmo, Rex Brown, Zakk Wylde, and Charlie Benante. The band has embarked on the second leg of their Legacy tour and stopped in Nashville to put to rest all the rumors that they didn’t have what it takes anymore, did they ever prove the haters wrong!

As we photographers were being escorted to the photo pit we were in awe of the crowd. The sound was deafening! It was glorious and amazing that after 24 years, Pantera was back in Nashville and the crowd was hungry for them. The Arena was packed.

Hanging above the stage and down to the floor was a huge black banner with one word written in big letters PANTERA. It was joined on each side by screens showing the brothers in various antics through the years and people were shouting DIMEBAG, DIMEBAG, DIMEBAG, and VINNIE, VINNIE, VINNIE. It was evident that the love still hangs on for those beloved brothers that everyone remembers so well. There were so many young people there, that had never seen the original lineup and they were chanting right along with the veteran fans.

The intro began and the curtain dropped, and there stood Phil, Rex, Zakk, and behind the drums, Charlie. They opened with A New Level, and it was insanity! The crowd was jumping up and down to the groove, and hands were in the air, horns held high. The band sounded amazing, and they all looked very healthy and, well, younger! The energy, the tightness of the band as they played was unmatched, for all rights and purposes, Pantera was back!

Any doubts of Pantera not being on par with their past were crushed under the weight of songs like Becoming, I’m Broken, 5 Minutes Alone, This Love, and Walk! The Floods tribute was as amazing as it was sad. Zakk did an honorable honor to Dime as he held his fist high during a sustained high note.

The show closers were first Cowboys from Hell and final, Fucking Hostile. The crowd never stopped chanting the brothers’ names after the final note. It was more than a concert; it was a homecoming.
Most are calling this a tribute, and for most intents and purposes, it is. But Phil said see you next time and the seed is planted that asks the question, will there be a new Pantera record? We can only hope.

EDIT THE TIDE is a new alternative rock band that features members who’ve shared stages with rock giants such as Bring Me The Horizon, Skindred, You Me At Six, Funeral For A Friend, and Light the Torch. Their debut EP, ‘Reflections in Sound’, is more than just an introduction and signal of intention; it’s Edit the Tide’s heartfelt narrative of the past few turbulent years that is thought-provoking for so many of us. The collection of songs on offer encapsulates the scenes that have occupied these musician’s minds, the experiences that have shaped and transformed their lives, and provides a poignant opportunity for self-reflection in sincerely delivered words and music.

Beyond showcasing the band’s inception in April 2023, this debut EP delves into their transformative journey through the digital music industry for the band (and many musicians), underscoring how life has changed for them as a collective, as individuals, and as a result underlying the solidarity they’ve forged that could position Edit The Tide as emerging leaders in the UK rock/metal music community.

The five brand new tracks on ‘Reflections In Sound’ showcase a shared creative and innovative growth, with song writing top of the list which encompasses a diverse range of styles and sounds. Notable tracks like ‘Ambience’, ‘Unite & Rebel’ and ‘With Regret’ demonstrate the potency Edit The Tide has to offer with emotional hooks, lyrical depth and experimentation in their sound. Examination and inward reflection stand shoulder to shoulder as true stories around mental health, consequences and repercussions, and becoming a better person in the face of adversity are shared with the listener.

The performances on ‘Reflections In Sound’ serve the songs to such a high level, for a debut EP it’s astonishing to hear this musical evolution in what has been a short space of time (the new EP release date marks the band’s one year anniversary). Sonically uplifting, Edit The Tide’s raw manifestation of their musical prowess packs a punch with hauntingly powerful vocals that intertwine seamlessly with melody, groove, and hooks.
