DAN LORENZO Discusses Kiss Avatars, Working with Johnny Kelly + More

PATRIARCHS IN BLACK‘s “My Veneration” was named Best album of 2023 by Transcending The Mundane. Just recently Guitarist/songwriter Dan Lorenzo was interviewed by Brett Van Put, discussing KISS-avatars, working with Johnny Kelly and more. Read below.

How does it feel to have My Veneration named Album of the Year by Transcending the Mundane?

It makes me incredibly happy. I feel like I should be considered in the discussion of top heavy riff writers of all-time, but outside of some of my friends, a handful of fans and journalists like you….well, I’m not. Not on a large scale and it confuses me, frustrates me and when somebody like you tells me Patriarchs In Black’s new album is #1 I feel like Sally Field during her infamous “You like me” speech!

How do you feel this record compared to Reach for the Scars?

Funny timing because I just relistened to Reach For The Scars driving to Habit Burger to get a grilled Ahi-Tuna steak. Most journalists are saying we took a big jump up with My Veneration and I know Johnny Kelly thinks we did, but man, I think I love both albums equally. I do think our 3rd record could be even better. I’ve written ten new songs already and recorded 95% of my guitar parts. Johnny has already recorded drums to I think six or seven of them. Now we just have to wait for the singers and bassists to do their thing.

Describe the chemistry you and Johnny Kelly have as friends and musicians.

It’s funny we never really spoke much until the start of Patriarchs In Black. We’ve never been in the same room jamming, but I think he “gets” what I’m going for musically. I can’t believe how quickly he recorded drums to my new songs. Bobby Blitz told me right before I reached out to Johnny about recording, “He’s the perfect drummer for your riffs” and Blitz was right. We love a lot of the same music. We’re both REALLY big old school Kiss fans. The more we speak I find we have a musical love for some non-metal bands as well. We both freak for The Black Crowes. Friendship wise….he’s great. Almost always happy. Workaholic. We both love South Park. We have similar views on the world. I hope he likes me half as much as I like him. Johnny is just phenomenal to work with. Even my “other” drummers Mike Cristi and Ron Lipnicki think he’s perfect for me.

The almighty riff is so important to your sound- how do you know when you have a great riff?

Great question Brett! Sometimes, I go upstairs in my loft and it comes so easily I think “You’re being an egomaniac. You couldn’t have possibly written another two great riffs in three minutes”. So, I yell down to my wife who’s sitting below me in our living room, “Hey Gina, you hear that”. She will say, “Yeah, that’s pretty cool” or “That is dark. I envision somebody leaving a funeral”. Usually I know right away. So then I record it on my phone or my Zoom unit and wait till I see how it sounds the next day. Then I might go to bed and the two riffs keep going through my head and I’ll “hear” the perfect middle section. Honestly, it just keeps getting easier. Of course there are times where I listen the next day and I’m like, “Ehh”. Also, I have HUNDREDS of riffs that go nowhere. They don’t seem to fit with any other riff. The album My Veneration was all completely new riffs I wrote after I wrote Reach For The Scars except Heaven Burn which I wrote in ’93 or ’94 and my favorite of My Veneration the chorus of the title track. I found that on my Zoom Recorder. I had written the riff years ago and wrote the melody after the whole song came together in 2022.

There are some who might criticize having different vocalist on one album- why do you feel this approach works with Patriarchs In Black?

Well, EVERY band I’ve been you always have a handful of people saying, “Yeah, the music is great, but I don’t like your singer”. This takes care of that! Plus, it’s really fun.

On the other hand, I love the variety you get with these different singers- it always sounds like you and Johnny, but the vocalists add their style and make each song unique- is that the intention?

For sure!

Why did you feel Karl, Mark, Rob, Kelly, John, Bobby, and DMC were the right singers for My Veneration? Will they all appear on the next one?

Well, I’m a fan of all of them. Yes, they will all be back except for John Kosco. I’m pissed at him because I sell tattoo supplies for a living and John doesn’t order from us so fuck him! ( laughs) No, John is busy with his band Revel At Dusk so I recruited Kyle Thomas from Exhorder/Alabama Thunderpussy. Kyle sang our newest cover Twisted Sister Destroyer out February 2nd and he’s going to sing a really bad ass original on our third album.

Who is your favorite singer of all time? Favorite musician?

Bon Scott. Layne Staley. Jimmy Page.

How do you feel about Kiss retiring from touring and the avatar idea?

I wish they retired when I saw them on their “final tour” a decade ago. I’ll never stop listening to old Kiss, but man….I’m not a huge fan of them as people. Ace is the reason I picked up a guitar, but I just hear so many weird things about all of them. Avatar Schmavatar. Ridiculous. I think I would get along best with Gene Simmons out of all of them, but the other day Jimmy Schulman sent me a video of Gene saying how much he despises playing the song I was made for loving you. I was thinking, “Then don’t play it!” If you do anything you hate for money you’re a fucking prostitute.

What is your favorite guitar?

No contest-Gibson Les Paul Custom.

Will there be any chance of a Patriarchs In Black live performance?

Extremely difficult with logistics, the amount of people and Johnny being with Quiet Riot most weekends.

What was your favorite album this year?

Same as yours Brett! Patriarchs In Black My Veneration!

What’s next for Dan Lorenzo in the new year? Cassius King? Patriarchs In Black?

Patriarchs In Black! We just have to sell more CDs and vinyl to make album #3 a reality. I’ve already written and recorded ten new songs for the next album. I think the next album could be “the one”.

LESBIAN BED DEATH Sign with Wormholedeath for Release of “Midnight Lust” Album

Uk Gothic rock/metal phenomenon LESBIAN BED DEATH has officially joined forces with Wormholedeath for the release of their thrilling new album “Midnight Lust,” slated to drop on March 1st, 2024.

Lesbian Bed Death is a Gothic Punk / Heavy Metal band from Stoke-on-Trent, UK. Blending their love of Horror movies and aesthetics with raucous riffage, gothic undertones, and insanely catchy choruses, Lesbian Bed Death has been tearing up the underground for some time.

Following the inclusion of their newest lead singer, JJ, in February 2023, Lesbian Bed Death has reached new heights with a successful UK tour, jaw-dropping new music videos, and now, their finest album yet, Midnight Lust.

About Midnight Lust

Horror, Love, Sex, Death, Passion, Empowerment, and Fun are the key ingredients of this new album, providing a rollercoaster of excitement, emotions, and entertainment. The band wants to take their fans on an unforgettable journey, and with this cohesive collection of songs, they continue to both spark the imagination and get the dance floors moving.

Midnight Lust is effectively the twin sister of the previous album, The Witching Hour, as both were produced by Steve Lethal and Dan Peach with the pair taking on the majority of the writing. With Midnight Lust, the band decided to take the band in an overall more ‘Heavy Metal’ direction, with a focus on crushing, dark riffs.

Lyrically, there are stories told, such as in the title track ‘Maria’ and ‘Horrors of the Crown Hotel’, songs with a dark, personal touch about mental health and personal reflection such as ‘Your Love Makes Everything Worse’ and ‘The Woman Who Drinks Tears’, and full-on party anthems like ‘Satanic Suicide Sex Cult’ and ‘Reykjavik Nights’. There is also a song about Art the Clown from the Terrifier movies (Art of Terror).

Midnight Lust has everything a fan would expect from a Lesbian Bed Death album and more. It’s a mix of Goth, Punk, and Heavy Metal, with killer choruses and a few surprises. You could call it “LBD-XTRA”.

Tracklist:

  1. Maria

From the heart of France’s mystical forests, emerge the enigmatic warriors of EIHWAR, a Viking duo that has forged an unbreakable bond within the revered ranks of Season of Mist.

Embarking on an epic journey, EIHWAR has sent shockwaves reverberating through the digital realm. Their unique offering, the extraordinary concoction known as ‘Viking War Trance,’ is a sonic fusion breathing life into pagan war songs, resounding drum beats, and the elegant interplay of woodwinds and strings. A mesmerizing musical alchemy, underscored by an irresistibly danceable rhythm, beckoning listeners into a trance of their own.

As the Viking duo descends upon Europe, EIHWAR invites you to immerse yourself in their mystical journey that blurs the lines between ancient folklore and pulsating trance. You can experience the mystique for yourself on the following dates all across Europe:

24 February: Millam, FR @ Les Fils D’Odin
16 March: Bourg-En-Bresse, FR @ La Nuit Des Sorcières
31 March: Mons, BE @ Trolls & Légendes
11 May: Lessay, FR @ Graf Zeppelin Festival
29 June: Clisson, FR @ Hellfest 2024
7, 8, 9, 10 August: Villena, ES @ Leyendas Del Rock

As EIHWAR officially joined the Season of Mist tribe in December of last year, the debut of their sonic saga – all 10 tracks – reverberates across streaming platforms, as well as digital downloads from our online store. The mystique of their primal ritual is further unveiled in the bewitching ceremony captured in the hit single ‘Berserk,’ an experience not to be missed and to be seen on YouTube:

Ragnarök Singles
1. Berserkr (4:04) [WATCH]
2. Fenrir (5:13)
3. Ragnar’s Last Raid (5:43)
4. Ragnarök (7:13)
5. Skjaldmö  (5:08)

7. The Forge (8:31)
8. The New Vikings (6:25)
9. Valhalla (8:52)
10. Yggdrasil’s Renewal (4:04)

Since its appearance on YouTube in February 2023, EIHWAR has shook the Internet and concert venues. Although no promotion has been made and nothing is known about its musicians, most of EIHWAR‘s concerts are sold out and we already know that the band will be scheduled at big European festivals in 2024.

Being part of a new generation of neo-Viking bands, they produce an empowering and brutal dancefloor music, composed of hybrid sounds, trance vocals, shamanic drums, traditional Nordic sounds and powerful machines. EIHWAR is sacrilegious. As the web already says, the duo is a kind of new ‘Viking Carpenter Brut’.

They are currently working on their first album which will be released before the end of 2024.

Ragnarök was produced, recorded and engineered by Saturne Mezzasalma and Antoine Aureche. Mixing & Mastering by Saturne Mezzasalma and Antoine Aureche.

Finnish melancholic metal band Garden of Stone is set to release their debut EP ‘Tides of Decay’ on February 15th 2024 via Inverse Records. The second single Idol of Flesh is released today with lyric video, stream and watch below.

Guitarist Ville Penkari comments:
“Idol of Flesh is the second single from Garden of Stone’s upcoming debut EP, Tides of Decay. The song showcases the band at their heaviest. Where Hymn of a Dead Man Pt.1 is slow and brooding, Idol of Flesh is fast and heavy. The song hits hard at the listener until the heavy guitars and brutal screams turn into a soft embrace of clean guitar and singing melodies. This does not go on for too long, as the song is driven home with the energy that was established at the beginning, without forgetting a breakdown that will make your neck move without your permission. The lyrics handle fear as an entity that is crowned as both the ruler of all and the highest currency.”

Garden of Stone is a melodic metal band that weaves together melancholic rock and heavy metal. From the band you can expect brooding atmospheres, beautiful melodies, and face melting riffs.

Soon after, drummer Tapio Haverinen joined to keep the rhythm department in check. The group was completed when bassist Kalle Hänninen joined to govern the lowest frequencies. Guest drummer Matias Rokio arranged and played the drums for the upcoming EP. The band published their first single, Hymn of a Dead Man Pt.1, in December of 2023, with the EP “Tides of Decay” just around the corner.

He Was A God– with a metal scene veteran line-up comprised of Chris Densky (Genitorturers, Deadstar Assembly), TonyPellino (Adva), Ray Zvovushe,  Dan Perrone, and vocalist Benjamin Curns – is the Connecticut metal quintet behind a hard-hitting catalog of progressive arrangements, memorable hooks, and biting socio-political commentary. Today, they bring you their poignant new single “Class Dismissed” from the upcoming full album, Muckraker.

“Class Dismissed” Premieres Exclusively at Outburn – check it out here.

He Was A God explains “‘Class Dismissed’ is not a song about guns. It’s a song about kids. Kids who are senselessly and tragically killed by other kids. The abject horror of the American school shooting is magnified by a sensationalist media and a legislature so compromised by special interests that it seems as though nothing will ever change. The lobbyists, loonies, and lawmakers count on us to shut up, to forget, and to move on. We won’t. We are from Connecticut. Sandy Hook is our backyard. We won’t forget. And we won’t let you forget, either.”

He Was A God is:
Benjamin Curns – Vocals
Chris Densky – Drums/Percussion
Tony Pellino – Guitars/Keys/Backing Vocals/Programming
Dan Perrone – Bass
Ray Zvovushe – Lead Guitar

French MOURNING DAWN Premiere New Album “The Foam of Despair”

Posted by tarjavirmakari on January 8, 2024
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: MOURNING DAWN. Leave a comment

French black-doom metal torchbearers MOURNING DAWN are now premiering their sixth studio album, “The Foam of Despair”. The exclusive world premiere comes via InvisibleOranges. Stream the album HERE.

Aesthetic Death will officially release “The Foam of Despair” on digi CD and gatefold LP – (vinyl co-released with Tragedy Productions) on January 12th 2024.

Tracklist:

1. Tomber du temps
2. Blue Pain
3. Borrowed Skin
4. Apex
5. Suzerain
6. The Color of Waves
7. Midnight Sun (CD edition bonus track)

The journey of our personal evolutions should be intrinsically integrated within, and carve out, our creativity.

MOURNING DAWN have always reflected the rich cycles of their lives within their albums – both the bad times and the very bad times. With “The Foam Of Despair”MOURNING DAWN undergo their own metamorphosis, emerging to reach a heightened level of perception, doomed spirituality and self-reflection.

This new album has all the benchmark qualities of MOURNING DAWN – the blackened doom pacing, the anguished vocals and the captivating songwriting – but with any great album there needs to be a creative alchemy, the Je ne sais quoi that brings everything together. “The Foam Of Despair” certainly has that, with this new material elevated beyond that heard before from this now established line-up.

Strong words considering the quality of albums created in the past two decades – just listening to “For The Fallen”, “Les Sacrifies”, “Dead End Euphoria” it’s clear to see the impact MOURNING DAWN have had upon this scene.

This album takes their blackened depressive doomed music to new levels – with the freedom to explore new territories and industrial overtones – and solidifies their position as one of the most important bands of the genre.

Most of all, “The Foam Of Despair” feels like a whole – there’s a new confidence and comfort in their own creativity – reflecting on their journey, really being at one with both their despair and their evolution.
