METHEDRINE Drop New Single ‘Cruel and Short’

Italian crossover and boundary-pushing quartet METHEDRINE will release their debut album, “No Solution, No Salvation” on January 19th 2024 via Time To Kill Records. Today, the band shares the new single “Cruel and Short”; stream it HERE.

Frontman Lou shares his sentiments about the track:

“I first heard ‘Cruel and Short’ when it was still in its embryonic stage, even before Dario and Bob joined the band and Methedrine became a tangible reality. I wrote the lyrics on the train between one change and another while I was traveling the usual 400 km to go and rehearse with Dario. They didn’t all come to me at once; I remember that at that time I was obsessed with Slayer’s ‘Undisputed Attitude’… I liked the way those hardcore punk classics sound on that record, and I thought that that was exactly what I was trying to achieve with Methedrine. The slower part is the result of Dario and Bob’s passion for NYHC, and the latter suggested the vocal line to me.
The refrain ‘Life is cruel and too short’ comes from a phrase that my older brother Mauro (R.I.P.) used to tell me all the time: “Life is like the ladder in the chicken coop: short, steep and paved with shit, so try to do everything you want as soon as you can because you don’t know how long it will take you to get to the top’.
In any case, it’s one of my favourite Methedrine songs and I am happy that Mark agreed to record the final solo… Short and cruel. Just like life”.

The first single “A Massgrave for my Dreams” is still available HERE.

On this new album the band incorporate death and black metal influences into their hardcore imprint, creating a darker and more robust sound. Some of the songs also feature the contribution of friends such as Fabione from Hobos, Mark from Eu’s Arse/ Tytus, Domenico from Fulci and Samall from Slander.

METHEDRINE originally took shape in 2017 when Upset Noise (pioneers of Italian crossover/d-beat in the 80s) disbanded after a brief reunion.Bone (drums), Lucio (vocals) and Mark (guitar) started looking for new members for a new band. Dario (guitar) and Bob (bass) answered the call and the band started mixing influences ranging from Motorhead to early thrash and hardcore, looking for new musical landscapes.}
A taste of the material was released on the EP “Built For Speed” in March 2018. After a couple of years spent spreading their message on stages (in Italy, Belgium and Croatia), tensions built up within the band, until Bone and Mark decided to leave the project. The remaining members wasted no time and their search for a new drummer ended when Nik answered the call.
The brand new METHEDRINE 2.0 are now further exploring the d-beat/crossover legacy, expanding their sonic perspectives with more varied and darker influences.

VIPASSI Release Visualizer for New Single ‘Morningstar’

VIPASSI have been carefully unlocking a mystery. The Australian quartet’s new album, Lightless, explores all sorts of twisted phenomena, from the hooded ritual of “Phainesthai” to the distorted maze of “Labyrinthine Hex“.

Today, these instrumental seekers are turning their all-seeing eye toward the future on new single, “Morningstar”.

Lightless comes out January 26. Pre-order: https://shop.season-of-mist.com/list/vipassi-lightless

“Morningstar” gazes into an uncertain vision of the future. The song is blown open from the inside-out by a fretless low end that’s warped and bottomless as a wormhole.

“A terrifying glimpse of the world beyond, visions of the future and its potential”. That’s how drummer Dan Presland describes his band’s new single.

The breakdown is heavy, with blast beats that whirl by like asteroids. But on “Morningstar”, Vipassi reach somewhere beyond the celestial. The way the  dissonant riff floats through an eerie synthetic glint will have you seeing more than just stars.

“‘Morningstar’ is the true beginning of the spark that propels us through the album’s journey toward its haunting finale”, the band says.

As a purely instrumental band, Vipassi are blessed with a telepathic chemistry. No wonder they spin epic stories without uttering a single word.

Watch as they weave as one through this playthrough of recent single “Labyrinthine Hex”, here.

In Buddhist tradition, VIPASSI is the twenty-second of the twenty-eight Buddhas. Etymologically, the name has its roots in clear vision – a being of extreme contemplation. The band of the same name is a world-spnning instrumental extreme metal band from the lands of Australia, France and the UK.

With members of acts such as Ne Obliviscaris, Black Lava, Hadal Maw & Virvum, their work on the 2017 debut album ‘Sunyata’, which has a loose signification of Emptiness or Void, set the grounds for a technically impressive and fully instrumental exploration of sonic textures in what can best be described as – a divine experience reaching the depths of the human soul.

Originally made as a project between Daniel Presland (Drums) and Ben Boyle (Guitars) as far back as 2007 to explore new concepts and sounds not currently engaged by their projects at the time, the band has since then grown and expanded to an international connection of like-minded musicians and virtuosos with Arran McSporran (Fretless Bass) and Benjamin Baret (Guitars).

Further exploring their labyrinthine textures and layers of sounds, the band Vipassi is back with their sophomore album ‘Lightless’. The album shifts from the realm of the void towards a clash of light and dark – and sees the band expanding into even more technical and experimental realms, pushing the limits of their own ideas and abilities to heights unimagined when the band began all those years ago.

DIABOŁ BORUTA is a band based in the capital of Podkarpacie in Poland. They are active on the music scene since 2010. They play play folk metal, but on the fifth studio album “Borutus Akustikus” (2023) they showed the most recognizable songs in an acoustic version. This special release could take you on a journey through time and space to the land of the Slavs and their captivating music. But at the end of 2023 once again, Rzeszowian band chose best songs and re-recorded without folk instruments, as fully thrash/heavy metal music.

Musicians comments: “Our goal was to refresh older material and record it with a live lineup, i.e. without keyboards and with different guitar arrangements. The argument for the creation of this release was also the statement that Borut is a metal band and it would be a pity if the year 2023 was associated only with an acoustic album, so we decided to release an album with a new sound, which includes older songs, i.e. “The Best off alive but in the studio.”

The leader of the band – Paweł Leniart – is responsible for recording, mixing and mastering. Cover artwork was done by Maciej Skrzypek & Hania Francus.

Album “Byłem Ongi Dębem” was released on November 15, 2023 digitally and as limited CD.

STEVE LOGAN Celebrates New Album “Psych Ward” with New Single ‘Jesus Is My Vaccine’

STEVE LOGAN has released new album ‘Psych Ward‘, out now, new single ‘Jesus Is My Vaccine‘, is also out now on Flip Flop Records.

Are we, for all our freedom more troubled and unhappy now than ever? Steve Logan’s sixth album, Psych Ward, touches on many of the big cultural issues of our times and will appeal equally to fans of Neil Young and the Manic Street Preachers.

‘A preacher of the fantastic with the soul of a poet’
Ian D. Hall, Liverpool Sound and Vision. Album rating: 9/10

“He’s a song writer whose relationship to Neil Young is arguably like that of Oasis to The Beatles. Both parties came up with something all of their own, while leaving the listener in no doubt as to where their musical inspirations came from”
Pete Feenstra, Get Ready To Rock Magazine

Latest single from the album: ‘Jesus Is My Vaccine’
“During Lockdown I read an article about a pro-Trump rally. Among banners saying ‘My Body My Choice’, ‘My Rights Don’t End Where Your Fear Begins’, ‘My Body, My Choice’ and ‘Socialism Sucks’, one in particular struck me. It said ‘Jesus is My Vaccine’. I felt that Jesus might have wept at this and the individualistic view of life it implies.”

In 2018, Steve was the subject of a TV documentary which you can check out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1w_PPQ3c-DQ&t=1s

Steve Logan’s Story
Steve grew up in South-East Wales, in a village where most of the men worked in the local steel-works. His father was a singer, mostly in the Irish clubs around Newport. Later he moved to London and busked in the subways near Marble Arch. On Edgware Road there is a subway now marked ‘Joe Strummer’s subway’ but it wasn’t just his. Steve wrote his first song at the back of the physics class, aged 14 and then kept going.
He joined his first band at fifteen, playing drums, then moving to vocals and guitar. There followed a long succession of cover-bands, indie bands and tributes. Notable among the indie-bands was one with strong political slant called ‘Keep the Faith’. Dave Stokes, the main songwriter in this, was an inspiration to Steve. He was really driven to write and get his music performed even if it wasn’t always welcomed.

Later, after moving to Cambridge, Steve formed Free Again which had several different line-ups and was firmly established on the tribute circuit. His plan was to play Free and Bad Company songs then work my songs into the set until they gradually became the main focus. This, however, didn’t happen owing to line-up changes and the constraints of the tribute format.

Eventually Steve decided to go it alone and began my recording his growing catalogue of original songs in earnest. He drew on the support of many good friends and musicians. Kimberley (‘Walking on Sunshine’) Rew, a legend on the Cambridge music scene generously played on Steve’s first solo acoustic album, Signs and Wonders(2014), as did Rhys Wilson, a stalwart of the local music scene. Kimberley’s wife, Lee-Cave-Berry, played bass on the full-band follow-up, Deliverance (2015), along with Rhys Wilson and Paul Richards (drums).  Steve’s third album, Wanted Alive (2016) again features the superb musicianship of Rhys Wilson (guitars), Andy Cross (bass) and Phil Bryant (drums), alongside Steve’s distinctive vocals and guitar-playing. This was swiftly followed by Backstreets of Eden (2017) which attracted wide and positive coverage in the music press. His current album, the fifth in five years, is called Shaking Hands with the Devil (2019).

As for style and influences, Steve says ‘It’s always difficult to say who your influences have been. If you just mention musical ones, you’re leaving out the personal influences which have often been as crucial. And, if you believe in matters of the spirit, there’s the large question of how we are led to the music and the people who do us most good. But among purely musical influences, maybe mine fall into two categories: heavy blues-rock and what I call song-poets – people who, following Dylan, are the minstrels of our age. Free and Led Zeppelin were crucial to me because they span both genres, writing heavy rock anthems and delicate dreamy poetry in music. My live sets and albums reflect this acoustic/electric border-hopping. Because of this, Neil Young has been an especially important influence and example, known as both the godfather of grunge and the author of some of the most sensitive and alluring acoustic ballads. I love his work because it honours the muse and keeps developing, as I aim to myself, singing with passion, right from heart to heart.

In many gigs, Steve plays an acoustic set followed by an electric one. He does many solo acoustic shows, sometimes joined by members of his four-piece band Geronimo, named with a nod to Crazy Horse. He has played both rock and acoustic stages at the Cambridge Rock Festival six years running. His songs have featured on many radio stations in the UK and on some in the US.
