In the dimly lit catacombs of extreme metal, one name stands as a monolith: ROTTING CHRIST. Sakis Tholis and his brother Themis started this band together back in 1987. In the three decades since, these Greek titans have left their blackened imprint all over the metal world. They’ve released 13 studio albums and played more than 1,300 concerts around the globe. Underneath all this hard work, Rotting Christ have but one vision – an urge to not only push the boundaries of extreme metal, but to keep reinventing themselves along the way.

Rotting Christ’s evolution has unfolded across several distinct chapters. After starting out closer to the barely controlled chaos of grindcore, they went on to establish the iconic sound of Hellenic black metal. Their albums often embrace refined gothic soundscapes, only to plunge back into the depths of blasphemous fervour. Each chapter marked another, further exploration, and an unwavering commitment to push boundaries.

But the real turning point came in 2007, when Rotting Christ signed a pact with Season of Mist. They unleashed a series of albums for the French label that defied any and all expectations. From the piercing Theogonia and the symphonic grandeur of Aelo to the ritualistic intensity of Κατά Τον Δαίμονα Εαυτού, the cinematic experiences created by Rotting Christ became a spectacle of bombastic atmospheres, mesmerizing choirs, and neo-classical arrangements. The unexpected is their modus operandi, with the use of various languages (Latin, Arabic, Greek, English) as well as the extensive use of famous poetry woven into their music, like Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Raven’ on The Heretics.

In 2019, Rotting Christ’s epic journey continued with The Apocryphal Spell compilation, which offers fans an intimate glimpse into unreleased and rare material. This allowed them to gather strength, preparing for the release of their next, highly anticipated, 14th full-length studio album: Pro Xristou.

Pro Xristou (‘Before Christ’ in Greek), serves as a fervent tribute to the last Pagan kings who resisted the onslaught of Christianity, guarding their ancient values and knowledge. In this thematic odyssey, intricately woven through tracks such as ‘The Apostate’ and ‘Ygdrassil’, Rotting Christ delves into the legacies of historical figures such as Flavius Claudius Julianus and Nordic mythological kings, embodying the might of Pagan wisdom in the face of Christian adversity. The album encapsulates the essence of Rotting Christ’s signature style – melodic, yet harsh at times – reinventing themselves yet again, while remaining rooted in their 35-year legacy.

Saxon release the video for “Witches Of Salem”, the forth single from the band’s critically-acclaimed 24th studio album, Hell, Fire And Damnation – out now via Silver Lining Music.

Hell, Fire And Damnation is an album which sees Saxon investigate all areas of history and mystery amidst ten of their most confident and thunderously powerful songs yet. In “Witches Of Salem”, lead singer and founding member Biff Byford, explores the unjust condemnation of the women victimized at the Salem witch trials and the sheer bigotry and mass hysteria prevalent at the time.

“This is an American story, but the witch trials started in Scotland, spread into England and across the sea to the colonies in America. Those poor women in Salem,” explains Byford “they weren’t ‘witches’ more than just unfortunate women really, blamed for everybody’s ailments… whether your horse died, or the milk went sour, they blamed women. Maybe because they were jealous of them, or maybe it was because some guy had made some advances and she’d told him to piss-off, so he’d declare that she was a witch. And once a person was declared a witch, I don’t think there was any way back from that; very few of them were found innocent.”

What do you call a car that’s been built on an aging yet trusty framework, around a bread-and-butter drivetrain with a monstrously growling V8 hidden under a sexy shell sporting some sleek, classy lines? Right, that’d be a muscle car. And what do you call a t-shirt that’s got stripped of unnecessary parts in order to show the sweat on your shoulders and biceps while doing very masculine stuff? Yeah, too easy, that’s a muscle shirt.

So what would you call a breed of rock ’n’ roll, whose drums pound with the kinetic energy of a cylinder piston scratching the edge of its specs, whose bass even drives P*rnosonic back into mom’s arms – chased by a guitar sound that could blow the air out of a room if someone accidentally opened a door? A heavy groove, crowned by a voice as solid as a mountain, boasting a massive foundation and well-shaped peaks, even though it once came from the flat south?

Well, technically, we could name it muscle rock, but that isn’t really a thing – or is it? Let’s call it THE MERCURY RIOTS for now.

So who the fuck are these guys, who won the prestigious HRH Award in the Rising Stars category only two years after getting together as a band in the middle of a pandemic? Simple answer: killer musicians, and highly sought after guns for hire in the pulsating protoplasma of the L.A. heavy music scene.

And with the lockdowns taking away all means of getting their hands dirty and their bellies boozed up in a rich L.A. nightlife, the four best friends unceremoniously started their own gig: THE MERCURY RIOTS. But how come that they don’t just sound like your regular L.A. sleaze rockers, you may wonder.
THE MERCURY RIOTS are simply immune to such trends, as their individual cultural heritage truly makes for a gang of motley dogs, drawing inspiration from Metallica just as much as they do from, say, Muddy Waters or ZZ Top. Their style may have been nurtured and their friendship forged in the wild heart of Los Angeles but all their passion and the inclination towards virtuosity – well, each of them has brought those to the City Of Angels in their luggage: from New Orleans, where Justin Walker’s voice was born and raised to tune in to traditional southern blues, as to rock and metal.

From the vibrant city of Montevideo, Uruguay, where Fede Delfino learned to channel his fiery and passionate energy into buttery smooth bass lines and mesmerizing singing. From the rough streets of Philadelphia, where Jonny Udell found his rhythm that he exported to the west coast so successfully early on, making his name as the ultimate drum machine.

And last but not least from Uruguay again – with Jonny’s long-term bandmate Felipe Rodrigo and his trusty guitar. Felipe became a musical nomad at a very young age, and embarked on a rock ‘n’ roll journey across the Americas. He and Jonny have successfully played together in the past. Drawing from the heavy punch of metal, they’ve been following the same vision ever since: reignite the boogie in rock ’n’ roll – just bolder and with elegance and stomp being plentiful, yet presented in a perfect equilibrium. That vision’s got a new name now!

And the quality of the sound is by no means a fluke either: Before heading out for a ginormous European tour later that year, THE MERCURY RIOTS flew to Vancouver, Canada, in 2023 to record In Solstice with no other than legendary producer/engineer Mike Fraser (AC/DC, METALLICA, AEROSMITH, JOE SATRIANI), who co-produced, mixed and engineered the album at The Warehouse Studio and Armoury Studios. While Mr. Fraser brilliantly captured all the powerful riffing, soulful vocals and pumping rhythms, the band decided to put the fine art of mastering in equally golden hands: It had to be Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound (THE BLACK KEYS, GRETA VAN FLEET, THE NATIONAL). ASINHELL Share ‘Pyromantic Scryer’ Video

For more than 20 years, vocalist/guitarist Michael Poulsen has been spearheading Danish rock and roll machine Volbeat, releasing eight full-lengths, selling millions of albums, and filling stadiums worldwide. Before fronting Volbeat, however, Poulsen formed death metal band Dominus, which recorded four fast, brutal albums in the mid ’90s. When Poulsen was putting together songs for Volbeat‘s 2021 album, Servant of the Mind, he wrote a bunch of death metal riffs and saved them on his phone. Then, when he was done with the Volbeat record, he reopened the rusty gates to Armageddon and started putting together songs for his new death metal band Asinhell, whose debut album Impii Hora (Latin for “Ungodly Hour”), is a tribute to Poulsen’s favorite old-school groups.

Today, the band has shared the video for “Pyromantic Scryer.”

“‘Pyromantic Scryer’ was the first song I wrote for the album and it surely has an Entombed vibe, and as I’ve said before, it was L.G. Petrov who kicked started the birth of Asinhell,” says Poulsen. “Pyromancy is the ‘art’ of prophecy/augury by any means of fire,” says vocalist Marc Grewe. “The song is about a mad man who thinks he can predict the future from fires. Fires he sets himself. In his delusion, he thinks he is a misunderstood messiah. The song can also been seen metaphorical on some things that are going on (and wrong) in the world of today… a small spark of a mad man (or group/cult) can set the world on fire. I think the video created by Shan Dan shows this dangerous behavior in a quite drastic way!“

Poulsen has rekindled the death metal fire that fueled his first band Dominus. He began jamming on riffs with longtime friend and neighbor, drummer Morten Toft Hansen (Raunchy). The two started playing in Morten’s tiny garage: no mics, no P.A. – just a drum kit and a combo amp turned all the way up like they used when they were teenagers. Soon, the pair were completing a new song every time they got together. When it came time to add vocals, Poulsen turned to his good friend, who also happened to be one of his all-time favorite death metal growlers: Marc Grewe (Insidious Disease, ex-Morgoth).

“I had known Michael quite a long time and he always mentioned that we should do a death metal project one day, but I never took him too seriously because he was so busy with Volbeat,” Grewe says. “Then he called for real and said, ‘Yeah, I want to do it now. Are you up for it?’ Immediately, I was like, ‘Yes, of course!’“

With Asinhell fully formed, the three convened with Volbeat producer Jacob Hansen to produce, mix, and play bass on their debut album. When it was time to add lead guitar to the album, Michael looked no further than friend and The Arcane Order axeman Flemming C. Lund.

CHRISTIAN DEATH Announce 2024 European ‘Armageddon Tour’

Legendary gothic rock band, CHRISTIAN DEATH has announced a series of European tour dates. Dubbed the ‘Armageddon Tour’, the run will take the band from Spain through Germany, Belgium, Poland, Italy, France, The Netherlands and Czechoslovakia before concluding in Ireland on June 3.

Regarding the title of the tour, CHRISTIAN DEATH leader, Valor Kand says: “We do not claim to be clairvoyant, just look around. An eye for an eye, a pound for a pound”.
