Tracii Guns: “As long as Phil Lewis Sings It Sounds Like L.A. Guns”

The Metal Voice recently spoke to guitarist Tracii Guns from L.A. Guns.

In the chat Tracii Guns talks about the bands upcoming new studio album ‘Black Diamonds the early days of Guns n’ Roses and narrating the recent Randy Rhoads documentary (Randy Rhoads: Reflection of a Guitar Icon)

Black Diamonds will be released April 14, 2023 via Frontiers Music SRL.

When asked what they did differently on the new album ‘Black Diamonds’ compared to their last album ‘Checkered Past’
“It’s always such a mysterious question to me too, you just kind of gotta go with whatever comes out.  L.A. Guns aren’t specific, like some things that I do which are very specific. I can focus on a sound or a Vibe or something like that. But L.A. Guns is kind of all over the place and it always has been. So it’s like the playground, the giant sandbox where all the other kids left all their toys in it and you get to play with these trucks, these balls, these Jacks, these shovels, that kind of thing. So I really don’t put much as far as musical limitations with L.A. Guns. So there could be some extreme metal and Reggae on the same album. As long as Phil (Lewis) sings, it sounds like L.A. Guns, that’s kind of my rule of thumb.”

When asked how long he was a member of Guns n’ Roses in the early years
A year.  Axel (Rose) was singing for L.A. Guns, we did a gig, there was a big throwdown with our manager. Based on a big throwdown with another band we played with that night. Our manager fired Axl but we all lived together. We sat on the couch and decided what we were going to do next and it was Guns n’ Roses. That’s all we did, we just changed the name and we added Izzy.

When asked if they were rehearsing the early Guns n’ Roses material that we know today
“We were playing them in L.A. Guns, a lot of those songs. Songs like ‘Don’t cry’ , ‘Anything goes’ , ‘Think about you’  a bunch of them.”

When asked if he helped in the arrangements and compositions of the early Guns n Roses songs
“Yeah some of them  because me and Izzy lived together so by the time we had Guns n Roses, when basically he joined LA Guns. Izzy had some of those songs that they had played  in Hollywood Rose. Because earlier Izzy and Axl were in a band called Hollywood Rose and when Slash was in Hollywood Rose they wrote ‘Welcome to the Jungle’. But for some reason when we got together as Guns N’ Roses we didn’t play ‘Welcome in the jungle’ I don’t know why. I don’t remember  but that was always a favorite song of mine that they had. When I was in the band (Guns N Roses) we were heavier than what people know as Guns n’ Roses now.  It wasn’t as blues-based, it was a little bit more metal. So more Straight Ahead, more L.A. Guns-ish really.”

When asked about his experience narrating the Randy Rhoads documentary (Randy Rhoads: Reflection of a Guitar Icon) that was released  two years ago
“All the feedback that I’ve gotten from it is, people are just grateful that it exists. The Quiet Riot years, a lot of people didn’t understand them or they didn’t know about them at all. How I got involved was  Andre Relis the director  contacted me and I got really nervous because I’m really good friends with Randy’s brother and sister. And we have always said that we would never do anything to do with Randy (Rhoads) unless it made sense and somebody else wasn’t gonna make money off it, like it wasn’t a cash grab kind of thing. So I talked to Andre about, what does Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne say? What does Kathy (Rhoads) say? Are they all against it?  I’m like those are my people and I really shouldn’t do this without their approval. And he (Andre Relis) said well I understand your thing but I’m doing it anyway there’s nothing legally binding that says I can’t do it. I had to think about it at that point because I knew that if I didn’t do it they would just get anybody to do the narration and then it would be a big sore spot forever. So I agreed to do it after I saw the documentary and I read the script, it was really put in a positive light and it was very truthful.  And it turned out great and Kathy (Rhoads) hit me and up  and goes I can’t believe you did this.  I didn’t answer her for a couple days  because I really had to process the reason that I did it. Why is it a positive thing? Why is it a good thing? Why does it make sense now? And I told her why I did it. I wanted to tell her after I had done it and explain those reasons but she found out before it was actually made public. So ultimately she agreed with me. You know she said well it is good that it’s you and I wish you had run it by me. And I said oh I didn’t run it by you because you would have talked me out of it and then somebody else would have done it, it was gonna get done. So I think that at the end of the day it’s been out for two years now um I think that it was very successful, number one but I think that we all feel good about it you know and it leaves a lot of room for the Ozzy years. Because an Ozzy documentary about Randy would be a full 90 minutes on its own. There’s footage there you know a lot of people say there’s no footage of Randy but there’s a lot of footage of Randy (unseen).  I haven’t seen it but I know that type of footage has been collected over the years. A lot of it’s VHS quality, a lot of it’s bootleg.”

ROBERT JON & THE WRECK Announce First-Ever Live DVD “Live At The Ancienne Belgique”

Just weeks after the release of their celebrated EP One Of A Kind, Southern roots rockers ROBERT JON & THE WRECK have announced Live At The Ancienne Belgique, their first-ever live DVD, released April 21st via Joe Bonamassa’s Journeyman Records.

Recorded during their sold-out show at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, Belgium on June 29th, 2022, the live album captures the Wreck amid their longest-ever tour – 67 performances in 75 days across 9 countries. The tour had been postponed for nearly two years due to the pandemic, so by the time the band hit the stage in Brussels, 50+ performances into the tour, they were a well-oiled machine ready to blow the roof off the place. The night was nothing less than spectacular, featuring a setlist that spanned the last decade of their prolific career, from their 2013 debut to their 2022 release. Stream “Shine A Light On Me Brother” live HERE.

The live album is available to pre-order on CD/DVD, double vinyl, and digital download at this location.

“A lot of time and effort went into our show at the Ancienne Belgique,” comments frontman Robert Jon Burrison. “We had been meaning to make a live album for years, so we saw this as an opportunity to document and release unique, more evolved versions of our songs.”

To celebrate the announcement, Robert Jon & The Wreck have released the first live video from the show for “Shine a Light on Me Brother,” originally the title track of their 2021 studio album. “’Shine’ is always an exhilarating song to play live,” Robert Jon adds. “There are a lot of moving pieces and even a time change between the verse and chorus. Without the horns from the studio recording, it definitely has more of a ‘rock’ feel to it in a live setting. This song also features the talents of two backup singers, which added a lot to our sound!”

Their very recent dynamic new EP release of One Of A Kind, out now on all digital platforms, received rave reviews from all over the world and help catapult the band’s awareness into new heights. Featuring material produced by GRAMMY-Award winners Don Was (Bonnie Raitt, The Stones, John Mayer) and Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile, Blackberry Smoke, Rival Sons), One Of A Kind showcases Robert Jon & The Wreck’s wide range and dynamic sound, from the instant rock & roll classic “Come At Me” and the captivating, Americana-infused “Who Can You Love,” to the outstanding riff-driven roots rock track “Pain No More.”

The One Of A Kind EP was the first taste of a slate of new material that Robert Jon & The Wreck will roll out over the next year and beyond. Prolific songwriters with a wealth of new material who refuse to be constrained by traditional release strategies, the band’s new partnership with Journeyman Records affords them the opportunity to work with the world’s top producers and release a steady stream of high-quality singles on an ongoing basis, cutting through the industry chaos and ensuring new music is accessible to fans as intended.

Reigning from Southern California, Robert Jon & The Wreck take the Southern rock sound from the east coast and make it their own. Since their inception in 2011, these native Californians; Robert Jon Burrison (lead vocals, guitar), Andrew Espantman (drums, background vocals), Henry James Schneekluth (lead guitar, background vocals), and Warren Murrel (bass) have been electrifying audiences all over the world with their soaring guitar leads, rich vocal harmonies, and memorable tunes. Recently, keyboardist Jake Abernathie joined the band for their tour and in studio. Simply put, it is difficult to ignore when these talented musicians take the stage.

Having just wrapped up a run of performances throughout the southeast, Robert Jon & The Wreck will return to the road next month supporting Blackberry Smoke in the USA, followed by a European tour including UK dates in September.

NOUVEAU ARCADE Release Cover of Garbage’s ‘Only Happy When It Rains’

Originally released in 1995, by Garbage, “Only Happy When It Rains” has become a phenomenon covered by many artists including Metallica. Today Nouveau Arcade releases their own take on the popular alt rock track.

Embossing the single with Alt-Rock, Midtempo, and Cyberpunk vibes, NOUVEAU ARCADE adorns “Only Happy When It Rains” with an introspective feel coupled with dark synthesizers and gritty guitars. Topped with a passionate vocal performance the cover is an easily addictive track with it’s emotive lyrics and yearning atmosphere. The single will be part of Nouveau Arcade‘s upcoming album Dead Hearts.

“When we heard this song it just clicked, and we knew what we wanted to do,” explains Nouveau Arcade. “We felt the desire to re interpret the lyrics to have a sound of vulnerability and feeling loneliness and isolation that we were experiencing as a society during the height of the pandemic.“

Nouveau Arcade are prepared to make their mark on the world combining elements of the nostalgic past and the electric future, with a wide array of eclectic influences in between. Nouveau Arcade doesn’t just think outside the box, they smash it creating a whole new shape from which they create their own unique vision.

The duo, hailing from Seattle, Washington, consists of Kevin Preston and Len Hotrum, long-time collaborators who have known each other for the better part of two decades. have a notable history together. Their project The Crying Spell, toured with well-known bands including Killing Joke, Julien-K, VAST, and played shows alongside Thriving Ivory, Filter, and The Birthday Massacre and opening for Nico Vega, Avenged Sevenfold, Sevendust, Three Days Grace, and Godsmack. The Crying Spell also performed an NFL halftime show for the Seattle Seahawks after receiving strong fan support, and they were the winner of MTV’s Freshman Four competition.

With Nouveau Arcade, the duo have expanded their sound into a electro rock retro-futuristic hybrid style  – somewhere between familiar dark synth influences à la Depeche Mode, or The Cure, David Bowie and contemporary hybrid electro Rock with elements of Muse, M83, Health, metric ,Gunship, joywave. Kevin and Len have named the result “Modwave.” Combining the pair’s admirable creative background and diverse songwriting skills with their collaborator Stefan Scherperel’s expertise in photography and music videos, Nouveau Arcade is soon to be one of the most talked-about acts in music today.

Swiss full steam death metallers ALL LIFE ENDS will release the follow-up to their debut “The Plague Of Man” in early June.

After the predecessor saw the light of day at the very beginning of the Corona Pandemic which slowed down the band’s extensive live and tour plans, everything is about to change! “Miscreation”, the title of the new album, is to be released at the beginning of June. The band has signed with Black Sunset/MDD for this purpose.

Together, the potential should be used so that the brute, new work of the Swiss band, which was already founded in 2006, can unfold its full force. Friends of uncompromising Death Metal with both, traditional influences, melodic parts and sophisticated guitar solos should be prepared. A record release show on 02.06. at Gaswerk, Winterthur is also already being planned.

More infos soon! Until then, everyone is recommended to listen to the predecessor!
