ORTHODOX Release Destructive New Single + Video ‘Soaking Nerves’

As they barrel toward their summer tour dates, Nashville metallic hardcore rising stars ORTHODOX have released a pummeling new single “Soaking Nerves.” Staying true to their hardcore roots, but also pulling from the more driving aspects of nü-metal “Soaking Nerves”, maintains a modern edge with a bestial beatdown and dizzying guitarwork that borders on progressive. The track can be streamed HERE.

ORTHODOX frontman Adam Easterling elaborates on the track: “Soaking Nerves is a song about becoming your own person and growing into your own viewpoint. In this growth we often shed the disciplines clipped to us by our family, and sometimes resent the way they were clipped. Growth becomes distance – and sometimes that distance expands between you and what you were raised to call God.”

Orthodox will embark on their headlining “Fortune Favors The Cold Tour”, with support provided by CHAMBER, MOMENTUM, 156/SILENCE and CELL. The tour will kick off on July 6th in Greensboro, NC at Rockhouse and wrap on August 13th in their hometown of Nashville, TN at Basement East. Tickets are available HERE.

“Though we’ve been on the road consistently over the years, Orthodox hasn’t hit the road as a headliner since 2018!” states vocalist Adam Easterling. “That alone has us excited just to get out and get playing. The hardest part of it is following what we see to be a truly special, heavyweight undercard. There is not a single set in this lineup that lacks impact, and we think this summer will be memorable for a lot of people, ourselves included.”

ORTHODOX is touring in support of their most recent release, Learning To Dissolve. Learning to Dissolve was released to critical acclaim on August 19th via Century Media Records. Recently, the band shared video footage of their album release show held at The End in Nashville on August 28th, 2022. For a taste of their electrifying live performance, the video can be viewed HERE.

More About ORTHODOX:

The sound of ORTHODOX is the opposite of what most associate with the laid-back energy and country-fied twang of their native Nashville, Tennessee. ORTHODOX’s distinct, nu-metal-tinged brand of metallic hardcore has carved its own lane with their Century Media debut, Learning to Dissolve. “I think Nashville is really no different here than in any other city,” says frontman Adam Easterling, whose family background is rooted in the city’s country music industry. “There’s no major city where hardcore is at the forefront of the music business. But the musicians here are of a higher caliber because it is so competitive. If anything, it sets the bar a little higher.”

Learning To Dissolve is the punctuation on a journey that began with 2017’s Sounds of Loss. From the inception, ORTHODOX were nothing short of a standout, blending together riffs that wouldn’t be out of place on a SLIPKNOT record coupled with Easterling’s blunt, Jonathan Davis-esque howls. But, like their sonic brethren in KNOCKED LOOSE or VEIN.FM, while the influence of the 90’s/00’s is there, ORTHODOX doesn’t merely pay homage to their influences, it exceeds them. “From the beginning, we went in our own direction regardless of what anybody thought,” states Adam. “We didn’t grow up listening to hardcore. We grew up on bands like Linkin Park and System of a Down.” With Learning to Dissolve, those influences have refined themselves into a sound that is urgent and unforgettable from the album’s opening track, “Feel It Linger” to the personal and aural meltdown of closer, “Voice in The Choir”.

Written during the global pandemic and world shutdown of 2020, Learning to Dissolve was born of frustration. That is, until Easterling and guitarist Austin Evans began to really dig in. “I was in a weird place and felt creatively shut-down in the first few months of Covid,” says Adam “I really reflected on what I was going to do if things never came back. Austin and I started putting songs together, and Mike [White-Drums] and Shiloh {Krebs-Bass] came down and the album started to come together.” Recording in the dead heat of Summer with producer and mixer Randy Lebooeuf (THY ART IS MURDER, KUBLAI KHAN) at Graphic Nature Audio in Belleville, New Jersey, found the band in creative overdrive, ripping their songs apart. The experience was both grueling and intensely creative – until near-disaster struck the very last day.

“We had the van packed up, ready to drive back to Nashville and beat Hurricane Ida,” Adam recounts. “We are literally walking out the door. It’s already raining pretty hard. Austin turns around and goes, ‘What the fuck!’. Randy has already left and water is pouring out of the ceiling in the control room. At that point everyone runs in and starts grabbing all of his gear. Then it was like, oh shit! Right under one of the spots where water was pouring out is our hard drive. Randy’s computer was getting soaked. Luckily, we got all of the gear out before the hard drive was ruined!”

While 2019’s Let It Take Its Course focused on the duality of love and anger, Learning to Dissolve is born of intense self-reflection. It digs deeper than most metal or hardcore records. “The whole record Is about growing up and realizing that the things you wanted or the people that you loved when you were young don’t always align with your moral compass as you get older,” says Adam. “Learning to dissolve is about finding your own way. It’s about coming into your own as a person and deciding what’s right for you. Basically, living in your own solidarity or dissolving in complacency.” Not surprisingly, that ethos has echoed throughout ORTHODOX’s existence as a band, whose members past and present come from backgrounds rooted in straight-edge hardcore.

Easterling chocks it up to growing up in a family that had its share of addiction issues. “We’ve always been a straight-edge band – but we certainly don’t sound like one,” states Adam. “It’s not ‘if you’re not straight-edge, fuck you’ but we all come from that background. For me, it was about recognizing that addiction is a genetic trait and my personality as addictive so I want to stay away from habits that can hurt me.”

The hardcore-borne energy translates to ORTHODOX onstage. Ask anyone who’s seen ORTHODOX over the years giving from basements and DIY venues to giving the likes of THE ACACIA STRAIN, KUBLAI KHAN and SPITE a run for their collective money. No member stays in place as instruments flail, drumsticks shatter and Easterling channels personal demons leaving the audience nothing short of transfixed. “Live it all comes together.” says Adam. “There’s no do-overs or corrections. It’s as real and honest as it gets.”

Learning to Dissolve channels that sense of personal ennui in the most ferocious way. “Head On a Spike”, the first single and video from Learning to Dissolve is nothing short of a personal call-to-arm and statement of intent. “It’s a fuck you to everyone who said we’d never become anything as a band. You’re not enough to pull me away from this or make me give up.”

DRESS THE DEAD – Ft. Members from FORBIDDEN + WITCH MOUNTAIN – Release Debut EP “AEther”

Posted by tarjavirmakari on June 29, 2023
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: DRESS THE DEAD. Leave a comment

Hailing from Oakland, CA, DRESS THE DEAD released their debut EP AEther on June 27th via Blood Blast Distribution. Craig Locicero, from Forbidden, originally formed DRESS THE DEAD with The Haunted vocalist Peter Dolving in 2017. When Dolving left the group, the band struggled to find the right vocalist. While going through vocalist tryouts, Locicero received a text from Kayla Dixon.

Stream and purchase the EP at: https://bfan.link/aether-ep

Craig Locicero, “I’m proud of the vast catalog of music I’ve compiled over the last 3+ decades. Some of the very best material has come in the last 5 years with Dress the Dead. It seemed at times like the cards were stacked against us. Our timing never quite panned out. In great part because of the pandemic scrapping bigger plans. Regardless of that, we kept our heads down and put the art first. Created some amazing music that sounds unlike any other band out there. I believe collective visions of Kayla, James, Mikey, Mark & myself contributed to something that will eventually be discovered and looked upon favorably. My hope is that people will see this sooner than later. This collection of 5 songs does the talking.”

James Walker, “I think from the beginning we had a we don’t give a shit we’re gonna play what we wanna play attitude. That means writing the most heaviest parts right next to the most beautiful part. If it was artistic and we wanted to do it, then we did it. These five songs have a perfect combination of emotions in them. It’s an in your face fuck you your beautiful vibe.”

Mikey Rowan, “I’m happy to share with everyone some of the first compositions that I collaborated on with my friends in Dress the Dead. These songs were all conceived in 2021-2022, a period in which we were instrumentally experimenting with various different arrangement and composition theories and tools. It was immensely interesting to witness our sound develop as we collectively gained and applied intel from our own experiences as well as showing no apprehension to lean on and be inspired by the legends and giants of rock and metal music that came before us. These 5 songs provide a serviceable snapshot or time capsule documentation of a period in Dress the Dead that will be looked upon as a bridge to what’s coming next. Aggressive, dynamic, eclectic at times, chaotic, and peaceful, this is the sound of our band learning to harness and control our collective creative energy. The journey is the destination. Thank you for being a part of it, I hope you enjoy the music.”

Kayla Dixon, “I’m very proud of the work we all put in to getting this EP out. We all bring differing musical backgrounds to this project and we worked our asses off to try to encapsulate a sound that combines all of our influences. I hope that lands for everyone who listens to this EP. In regards to the lyrics and vocal melodies, I took a very straightforward approach and tried to remain conversational in tone which I feel really comes through on “I Want to Know You”. Personally, I wanted these songs to feel like I was sitting and having a conversation with the listener. I sincerely hope you all enjoy and can’t wait for feedback from everyone who listens!”

About Dress The Dead

Craig Locicero’s pedigree is well established: guitarist for Forbidden, one of the pioneering bands in the Bay Area thrash metal movement, and more recently guitarist for Manmade God & SpiralArms. Locicero longed to do something that wasn’t tied to any genre and that’s when he began to put the pieces of Dress the Dead together. Many of those pieces came from Locicero’s musical past.

The first piece was drums. In recent years, Locicero had rekindled his relationship with one-time Forbidden drummer Mark Hernandez, who played with the band from 2008-2011. The early chemistry was still there, and he had just the right feel for the music. Mark is one of the most well respected and versatile metal drummers to come out of the bay area having sat behind the kit with Testament, Vio-Lence, Social Unrest and Re-Ignition.

Next up was bass. James Walker and Locicero played together in rock act Manmade God, which was signed by Rick Ruben to American Recordings in the early 2000s. The mix of creation between veteran bassist Walker and Locicero is instrumental in the band’s sonic assault and its groove. Listen to a song that is written by Walker, as he is notorious for writing a song within a song.

A second guitarist was now needed to round it out. Dan Delay of the post-rock band Drawing Heaven had the versatile chops that expanded the band’s accessible but experimental sound.

With Peter Dolving on vocals, this version of Dress the Dead fine-tuned its sound and performed live at the end 2016 introducing everyone to the newest band formed by Locicero and this carefully selected group of veteran musicians. Peter eventually decided to return to his home in Europe and the search for a new vocalist was on.

Enter…… Kayla Dixon

Dixon has a pedigree that, at first, seems more appropriate for a professional theatre career than a frontwomanof a metal band. She was exposed to artists like Marilyn Manson and Tool from her half-sisters when growing up in suburban Maryland. When her sisters moved out of the house, Dixon moved on to other pursuits like musical theatre. Dixon eventually auditioned for and enrolled in the prestigious
Duke Ellington School of The Arts in Washington, D.C.

Dixon started working professionally in her junior year and finished high school via home study. She then decided to immerse herself in theatre and was soon working professionally. During her freshman year in college, she emerged to front a death metal band. Just as she mulled moving back to the East Coast to pursue more theatre work, she heard the doom band Witch Mountain was looking for a new vocalist.
She nailed the audition and moved to Portland.

Having relocated to the West Coast, Dixon was recommended to Locicero through a mutual friend. She initially worried that she was so different from Dolving she might face backlash from fans who wanted a certain thing. “In my mind, I thought I was going to be trolled, and I didn’t know if I was ready to face that,” she says, “But surprisingly there has only been positivity from the first song.”

“I want to be continually creating,” Dixon adds. “When I heard ‘1969’ I thought it was great. When Craig sent me the other songs like ‘Promises & Kisses’ I was really in.
I wanted it to be in a band that was heavy emotionally and sonically.”

One of the interesting components of the band is the musical experience gap. Dixon is 23, whereas Locicero and the rest of the band have been in signed recording projects for some time. This dynamic allows the sound of the band to blend generations of auditory power together.

The missing piece …… Mikey

In 2019 Dan Delay had to step away to dedicate more time to family life. Dress the Dead were now on the hunt for a new guitarist. That didn’t last long at all as this presented the almost instant addition of Mikey Rowan.

“Within 5 minutes of our announcing that Dan decided to walk” Craig recalled, “both Mark and I were getting texts from a number of our mutual friends and Mikey himself saying that he was the guy for the band!” It was indeed a sign from the Gods of Rock n Roll.”

Most metal and rock musicians in the Bay Area had been aware of Rowan for many years. As a 16-year-old kid, he got the gig with metal act Insolence after which they were signed by Maverick Records. He immediately made a name for himself with his advanced playing and high energy stage presence.

“Mikey brought exactly what we needed at the perfect time with boundless energy and musical vocabulary. He fearless! We love that and welcome any challenges.” Locicero continued

Collectively, these pieces allowed the band to upend expectations. “From the first day I started this I wanted something that would be unafraid to mix in any influences I had and not worry at all about chasing something or trying to fit in,” he says. “We just want to play music. We have enough influences from all angles, so we don’t need to call it anything. I figure other people will do that for us. We have freedom with this and that is our main objective – write great songs and don’t worry what you call them.”

STYGIAN FAIR Release New Video for Upcoming Album Title Track ‘Aradia’

Posted by tarjavirmakari on June 29, 2023
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: STYGIAN FAIR. Leave a comment

Sweden’s STYGIAN FAIR will be releasing its new album entitled “Aradia” this coming August via Rockshots Records. It is the band’s fourth full-length and follows “Equilibrium” (2021), “Nadir” (2020), and the debut “Panta Rei” (2018).

Formed originally in Umeå, Sweden, Stygian Fair‘s new album “Aradia” features new vocalist/guitarist Andreas Stoltz (Binary Creed, Hollow) along with Emil Holmqvist (Guitar), Anders Hedman (Bass), and P-O Jonsson (Drums). The music is heavy, pondering, and a unique blend of new and old, heavy epic metal.

“We think the fans will recognize the style of Stygian Fair. There are a lot of strong tracks on the album and it’s also very varied.” adds the band.

Featuring 10 tracks of assorted AOR melodic metal, this album will touch and transport listeners to a place where melodies, words, and musicianship become emotion and images.

“We rely on good melodies and the rhythm section is, as from the beginning, vital to the band’s sound. Now that Andreas is in the band there is more room to play around with the guitar parts, so that might be something different on this album. But we think that old fans won’t be disappointed with Aradia!”

“Aradia” is a monument of honest metal. The band has no ambition of jumping aboard any current music fads but does whatever they like and feel works when they play together. There are softer songs and heavier songs, but all of them will convey something to fans, especially those who enjoy Rush, Memento Mori, or Tad Morose.

“Aradia is one of those albums you’ll return to many, many times. We’ve made it heavy, metal, and totally honest. There’s beauty here, there’s sadness, anger, loss, and longing. Things you’ll be able to relate to. That’s important to Stygian Fair since you’re important to us. Why else would we be doing this? We’re really pleased with the diversity of the songs: plenty of heavy guitars, drums that propel and persuade, a bass that moves and grooves plus of course singing that speaks to your soul in whispers and screams. We think you’ll like it!” adds the band.

The band’s first single and title track is now available to hear and is being unveiled with an accompanying music video.

Stygian Fair comments:

“Aradia is based upon a 20-year-old riff and it’s great that it finally evolved into a full song. Now it’s really a band effort with all members participating with their individual expression. We think Aradia conveys the urgency and mood of a clandestine coven, worshipping the many deities of Mother Nature. With all that’s going on with the climate a greater respect for Her is definitely called for.”

Additionally, the band is sharing the live performance video for the track filmed at their Sacramento show on the Dreams in Gold Tour in March; 2023; watch/share the performance HERE.

The track is debuting on Apple Music 1’s “The Zane Lowe Show,” which can be heard HERE.
“An unwavering warrior carrying on the endless, eternal, and impossible battle for salvation; these were the elements of symbolism associated with this particular track,” explains guitarist Jake Kiszka. “In essence our fate is sealed, alike the stars that fall from the almighty heavens to the earth. This philosophy is carried through in the story of a bluesman, at the crossroads of the universe.”

“The Falling Sky” is the latest track to be unveiled from the band’s highly anticipated forthcoming third studio album Starcatcher, due July 21 on Lava/Republic Records. The new track follows the release of “Meeting The Master,” “Sacred The Thread” and “Farewell For Now;” Consequence hails “‘Farewell for Now’ shows Greta Van Fleet’s softer side in a very retro-sounding ballad.” Of “Meeting The Master,” Uproxx notes that “‘Meeting the Master’ [is] an existential new single on which lead vocalist Josh Kiszka embarks on a spiritual journey;” pre-save/pre-order StarcatcherHERE.

Additionally, the band is launching a new puzzle box, available for pre-order HERE. In celebration of the new album, there will be several vinyl variants including an exclusive black glitter vinyl, available for pre-order HERE. Next month the band is set to kick off their Starcatcher World Tour on July 24 in Nashville at the Bridgestone Arena. The tour, produced by Live Nation, includes stops at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York and The Forum in Los Angeles as well as London’s OVO Arena Wembley and more; see below for a complete list of dates. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased HERE. The Starcatcher World Tour includes support from special guests Kaleo, Surf Curse, Mt. Joy and Black Honey.
Greta Van Fleet will also be touring throughout Europe, starting in Hamburg, Germany on November 6 with further international stops in Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam and more.

Starcatcher is written and recorded by the band—lead singer Josh Kiszka, guitarist Jake Kiszka, bassist/keyboardist Sam Kiszka and drummer Danny Wagner—alongside Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile). Recorded at the legendary RCA Studios in Nashville, the band utilized the large recording room to capture the pure energy of their world-renowned live performances.
“We didn’t really have to force or be intense about writing, because everything that happened was very instinctual,” Jake says. “If anything, the record is our perspective, and sums up where we are as a group and individually as musicians.”

Throughout the ten-song collection the band explores the duality of fantasy versus reality and the contrast between light and darkness. “We had this idea that we wanted to tell these stories to build a universe,” says Wagner. “We wanted to introduce characters and motifs and these ideas that would come about here and there throughout our careers through this world.”

The band took multiple concepts from critically acclaimed sophomore album The Battle at Garden’s Gate and brought them into Starcatcher, although Sam’s take on the new record’s big ideas hint instead at new beginnings. “When I imagine the world of Starcatcher, I think of the cosmos,” he says. “It makes me ask a lot of questions, like ‘Where did we come from?’ or ‘What are we doing here?’ But it’s also questions like, ‘What is this consciousness that we have, and where did it come from?’”

The band is best known for their renowned live performances, selling over one milliontickets worldwide. They sold out their entire 2022 arena tour, holding a special energy between them and their devoted fans. With Starcatcher the band aims to capture that energy in the recording studio.

Most recently, the band performed at the inaugural Lollapalooza Mumbai and completed an extensive U.S. arena tour in March. Last month, Greta Van Fleet played at Shaky Knees Festival in Atlanta and the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis.

Starcatcher follows their acclaimed sophomore album The Battle at Garden’s Gate, released in 2021 to extensive chart and critical success. The album debuted at #1 Billboard Rock Album, #1 Billboard Hard Rock Album, #1 Billboard Vinyl Album, #2 Billboard Top Album Sales and in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200. Their From The Fires EP, released in 2017, won Best Rock Album at the 61st Grammy Awards.
Forming in Frankenmuth, Michigan in 2012, Greta Van Fleet consists of three brothers—vocalist Josh Kiszka, guitarist Jake Kiszka and bassist/keyboardist Sam Kiszka—as well as drummer Danny Wagner. Together they have performed across multiple continents, sold over 3.5 million records worldwide and performed on late night television shows such as “Saturday Night Live,” “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
