MICHAEL ALAN Takes Instrumental Rock to New Dimensions on “Calling”

Posted by tarjavirmakari on March 19, 2023
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: MICHAEL ALAN. Leave a comment

The Coronavirus pandemic in 2020 was an inspirational time for MICHAEL ALAN (born Michael Alan Kremastoules). A period that ignited the ambitions of writing and releasing material as a soloist. He called this his own personal Calling. The result of the isolation and flowing creativity soon produced an accumulation of instrumental songs that form his debut album.

Calling is a body of work that reflects Michael’s rich diversity in influences and playing styles such as blues, classic rock, heavy metal, AOR and progressive rock, etc. With a career spanning over 35 years, which includes a tenure as lead guitarist in 80’s NWOBHM outfit Ded Ringer, Michael Alan oozes maturity in his approach to both song writing and guitar playing.

The album was completed over a 2-year period with close friend and co-producer Dave Johnson of Spellsound Studios (UK). Almost 30 years on from their first collaboration together, Dave has been fundamental in helping shape Michael’s vision of an album that allows his guitar to speak through melodicism. An album that both sonically and musically, aims to stand out from the crowd of modern-day instrumental guitar acts.

Guest appearances also include Michael’s own live band members Dave Johnson (Keyboards/Rythmn Guitar), Bob Pears (Drums) and Lincoln J Roth (Bass). Adding the finishing touches to a number of tracks is the classically trained violinist, strings arranger and composer Nino Chikviladze.

The 12-track debut provides an insight into a mature performer striving to create memorable and timeless melodies. His guitar is his ‘voice’ and his music tries to express what words fail to say through sheer melody, tonality, dynamics and most of all …emotion. In Michael’s own words, instrumental music speaks a ‘universal language’.

SHODAN delivers the follow-up to their 2020-released album “Death, Rule Over Us” with “None Shall Prevail”, an album of towering, progressive, dark death metal with hammering, crawling grooves, refined and escalating riffs, and lurching, calculated chord progressions.

SHODAN is a death metal three-piece conceived in Wrocław, Poland in 2013. Distinctive style of the band is a unique hybrid of death metal brutality, progressive approach towards song structures and melodies deeply rooted in cold wave aesthetics. In 2015 SHODAN together with producer Arkadiusz “Malta” Malczewski recorded tracks for their debut LP called “Protocol of Dying”. The record was released in spring 2016 under the cooperative flags of Defense Records and Deformeathing Production. The album was followed by a dozen of live appearances with acts like Sinister, Absu, Beheaded or Rotting Christ as well as appearances at festivals such as Gothoom, Into the Abyss, Metalmania or Castle Party.

After a successful cooperation with producer Kuba Mańkowski (Azarath, Behemoth, Blindead), in April 2020, the band released “Death, Rule Over Us” via Deformeathing Productions, which introduces a slightly different approach towards music with more experiments, raw, organic sound and cold wave melodic influneces involved. The album was again followed by a series of gigs with Hate, Krzysztof Drabikowski’s Batushka, Rotting Christ and Blood Incantation, and summer festivals, like Summer Dying Loud.

ELDER DEVIL Announce New Album “Everything Worth Loving”; Reveal Lead Single ‘Endless Need’

Fresno, CA grind band ELDER DEVIL have today announced that they’ll be releasing their forthcoming second album, titled Everything Worth Loving, via Prosthetic Records on June 16. Alongside the album announcement, ELDER DEVIL have shared the lead single Endless Need and an accompanying music video directed by analog artist I Love You Just For Fun.

Pre-order Everything Worth Loving here.

Speaking on the album announcement and single release, ELDER DEVIL comments: “Everything Worth Loving is about the inevitability of loss, the persistence of grief, and the disorientation of life after death. Endless Need perfectly encapsulates the frustration and anger that lingers long after that loss and serves as a reminder that time does not heal all wounds.”

Founded in 2016 by primary songwriter Jacob Lee (Hellish Form, Keeper, PlasticBag FaceMask) and vocalist Stephen Muir, ELDER DEVIL‘s mission statement of crafting corruscating grindcore and apoplectic sludge for the love of extreme music, and the scene they were birthed from, has remained unwavering in its execution. With a handful of EPs and 2019 full-length, The Light Dimmed Eternal, ELDER DEVIL’s latest chapter is an uneasy rumination on grief.

Upon completing writing for the musical components of Everything Worth Loving in January 2021, Muir took meticulous care in penning the lyrics to their sophomore’s 13 tracks. With the passing of his mother at the forefront of his mind, Everything Worth Loving is tinged with personal loss and a sense of displacement. Melding the insular and universal aspects of such grief is exemplified on the title track’s ponderance of love itself, as Muir questions, “Why do we love and why does that love leave?”. ELDER DEVIL’s answers for such questions are not easily stomached, but beneath the surface of their harsh noise lies a comfort within the cacophony.

With Lee once again taking on production duties, ELDER DEVIL commenced recording and mixing sessions between April and May of 2022 before handing over mastering duties to Jacob Plotkin (Cave In, Old Man Gloom, Street Sects and many more). The resulting 13 tracks possess a fervently raw side to the band, capturing ELDER DEVIL’s live explosiveness and grit in equal measure.

The striking black and white cover art for Everything Worth Loving was commissioned from Richmond, VA artist Derek R. Setzer, embodying the restless disquiet of ELDER DEVIL’s latest work. For all of the harsh truths and loss that permeates Everything Worth Loving, ELDER DEVIL’s second long player sees the quartet stand tall on, and come into, their own in uncompromisingly dark fashion.

Everything Worth Loving tracklist:
1. Endless Need
2. The Hounds at Night
3. Awash in Light
4. My Body is an Earthen Shrine
5. New Grief
6. Insomnia
7. What Do You See?
8. After Flesh
9. Puncture Wound
10. Burning Forest
11. What Do You Hear?
12. Dismal and Alone
13. Everything Worth Loving

ELDER DEVIL is:
Stephen Muir – vocals
Jacob Lee – guitar
Peter Ruacho – drums and noise
Ryan Urquidez – bass

Swedish death metallers DEATH REICH have released their debut album “Disharmony” via Non Serviam Records.

To celebrate the event they also unveil the new single “Oblivion”.

“‘Oblivion’ is a song about being consumed by your own hatred, focusing on everything that’s wrong with the world while feeling powerless. The bitterness that follows the endless thoughts of a fast-approaching apocalypse makes you forget who you are and suddenly you are old and have completely wasted your life worrying instead of living,” comments the band founded by Jonas Blom (Runemagick, ex- Sacramentum, Trident, Grief Of Emerald and One Man Army and the Undead Quartet) in 2018.

“Dissimulation” violently represents the darkest sides of the human race.
“Even though humans are considered the most intelligent species on earth by many, we have proven over and over again that we can’t coexist with anyone or anything without there being carnage, famine, eradication, suffering and so forth. As long as this continues there will always be disharmony”, explains the band.

GLASS CASKET return with their first release in 17 years: a brand new, self-titled EP, out 9th June on Silent Pendulum Records.

From Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Glass Casket features guitarist Dustie Waring and drummer Blake Richardson, both members of Between the Buried and Me.

Pre-order the album from Silent Pendulum Records, here: https://silentpendulumrecords.com
and via Bandcamp here https://silentpendulumrecords.bandcamp.com/album/glass-casket

Stream the EP’s first single, ‘Let Them Go,’ here: Spotify / Youtube

Glass Casket track list:

1. Merrymaker
2. Let Them Go
3. Prison of Empathy
4. For the Living

Back in action now under the Glass Casket banner officially for the first time since 2006, Waring and Richardson are teamed with fellow original members Adam Cody and Sid Menon, along with newest member Wes Hauch (Alluvial, ex-The Faceless).

The quintet have offered up a thrilling taste of things to come, in the form of the upcoming new EP’s first single, ‘Let Them Go’. An anthemic slab of death metal groove, replete with mesmerising flourishes, ‘Let Them Go’ bursts with energy and demands to be played on repeat. It is a sound that will melt the ears of fans of bands such as Whitechapel, Decapitated, Cryptopsy, and of course, BTBAM.

Active in the early ’00s, Glass Casket faded from view after the release of its Desperate Man’s Diary album in 2006, with Waring and Richardson committing full-time to Between the Buried and Me. Waring explains the hiatus: “We never really went anywhere. Everyone just kind of had their own lives and plans. Most of the guys were in college at the time and I just wanted to tour and play as much as possible, so Blake and I ended up in BTBAM. When Desperate Man’s Diary was recorded, we’d already released Alaska with BTBAM and had a pretty nonstop touring schedule so there were only a few shows played during that period.”

In 2014, Waring and Richardson connected with guitarist Hauch and made moves toward reviving Glass Casket. Waring states: “Back in 2014, Wes Hauch came and stayed with me for about a month and we put together some material with Blake and demo’d out a few things. I guess it just wasn’t the right time, so we just sat on it for a while and stored riffs and parts away for when things lined up. Fast forward to about a year ago… Blake started working on some stuff and emailed us ideas. Everything kind of took shape from there and I started demoing guitars just to see where we were at, how the songs made us feel. Everyone was pretty stoked on the material, so Blake tracked his drums at home, I went in and tracked with [producer] Jamie King, Adam came in and did his vocals with Jamie, and Wes tracked his solos at home. Very fast, very easy process for us at this point, and it came out better than expected. It was time.”

Vocalist Adam Cody muses on how the material has evolved since the old days: “The lyrics on this release are the completion of a circle for me. I’ve waited a long time to release another album with Glass Casket. Our first two albums were full of despair and heartache. The lyrics on this release are full of drive and determination. They focus on dealing with mental illness and overcoming obstacles one day at a time. It also deals with letting go of past tragedies. The ongoing fight we all deal with on a daily basis. No one is above it.”

Stand by for more updates about Glass Casket and the upcoming new self-titled EP. The EP is yet another highlight for Silent Pendulum Records, the Brooklyn-based label whose recent hot streak includes releases by Dr. Acula, The Number Twelve Looks Like You, and Heavy Heavy Low Low.
