CHRIS DUARTE Releases Lyric Video for New Track ‘Half As Good As Two’

The blues-roots guitarist CHRIS DUARTE has released “Half As Good As Two,” an instant blues-rock classic featured on his 15th studio album ‘Ain’t Giving Up,” out April 14th via Provogue Records. “While Beth and I were throwing around ideas for songs, she sent me a sound recording from her phone that had the basics of ‘Half as Good,’ and I was admiring the simplicity of the song,” Duarte recalls, referring to the Austin based songwriter Beth Lee. “She originally called it ‘Half as Good as You.’ Beth and I finished writing the rest of the song, and when I went into the studio to record, Dennis Herring our producer started to like the word play and double meaning of replacing You with Two. We liked the coyness of it and so we put it down.”

Featuring a wide range of outlaw blues, Americana, roots, and even alt-country influences, ‘Ain’t Giving Up’ finds the Austin, Texas guitarist teaming up for the first time in 22 years with producer-guitarist Dennis Herring, also known for his work with artists like Buddy Guy, Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello, and the Hives. But the resulting album isn’t a calculated return to roots affair. Recorded live on the studio floor with vintage gear and minimal overdubs, it’s a raw and revved-up showcase for the virtuoso’s jaw-dropping chops; his mastery of the elusive Texas shuffle; and his deep love and commitment to the blues.

“Half As Good As Two” follows the release of the album’s lead single, the super-charged Allman Brother-style riffy blues-rocker, “Nobody But You.” Watch the official music video here.

Duarte dropped his sophomore album, ‘Texas Sugar Strat Magik,’ in 1994, and it sold an excess of 100,000 units. Duarte went on to win the highly coveted “Best New Talent” in Guitar Player’s Reader’s Poll, and he finished fourth in the magazine’s “Best Blues Guitarist” category, behind legends Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy and B.B. King. He would go on to issue a string of critically-acclaimed blues, blues-rock albums, and experimental fusion-tinged albums.

‘Ain’t Giving Up’ siphons from the same spirit as ‘Texas Sugar,’ but the new album is definitely its own monster. The album was tracked live as a trio with ‘Texas Sugar’ drummer Brannen Temple, but it also features a rhythm machine with some raw, looped beat patterns Duarte plays over, much like the same funky groove stylings as on J.J. Cale’s iconic 1971 album ‘Naturally.’ “This album explores a wider spectrum of musicality,” shares Duarte. “I love Muddy Water and Howlin’ Wolf, but also feel like it’s part of me to introduce some unexpected influences. For this album, I didn’t feel scared to explore beyond hard-driving blues. I view this as expanding on the format that I love.”

“I planted my flag with ‘Strat Magik,’ and on this album, I am pushing the music forward,” Duarte continues. “I’ve explored lots of different facets of my playing, but this album says, ‘I’m here, and I’m not giving up on blues or my career.’ And I’m not playing it safe, either—the solos were all tracked live.”

Duarte has been known for his physical and athletic playing style—he often plays so hard his fingers bleed while he’s onstage (there are photos to prove this legend). Because of this fiery dedication, many fans and critics have playfully referred to his music as “punk blues” or “rockin’ blues.” “My style is super aggressive and physical,” Duarte affirms. “These days I’m a bit older, but I still put as much heart into my playing as I ever did—I still love playing.”

The guitarist, singer, and songwriter came up as a force to be reckoned with in the 1990s Austin, Texas roots and blues scene. He rose to prominence in the wake of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s passing, and was noted for his muscular playing style; his jazz and rock n’ roll-infused blues solos; and his command of the Texas blues tradition. Since those early days, Duarte has carved his own niche through a series of beloved blues-flavored albums, and a calendar of more than 150 dates a year which includes performances billed as Chris Duarte and as The Chris Duarte Group. In both of these contexts, Duarte has headlined major festivals and clubs throughout the US, Canada, Japan, and Europe.

Reunited with Herring who produced his best-selling record, Duarte instantly found a lot hadn’t changed with the two men. “There’s more grey hair and creases in our faces,” Duarte says with a chuckle. “But we have that same music connection we had years ago.  Dennis’s approach is to capture raw emotion, and, because of this, he records literally everything, even snippets between songs.” Duarte continues: “I brought my guitar with me when we tracked vocals, and he said I didn’t need it—the guitar parts were all done. He used the solos I played on the fly during the basic sessions.  They were fun, and off-the-cuff, and the tone and grooves were great. I was really dialed in.”

Ain’t Giving Up is intimate and gritty, but it also boasts pristine fidelity, as if we the listener are in the studio with Duarte and his buddies. It’s a reset for Duarte that shows his resilience and his undiminished love of the blues and American roots. “I am so grateful to be signed to Provogue and to work with Dennis again—it’s been a dream come true,” Duarte enthuses. “I have been so fortunate to play music and do my thing for almost 30 years, and I couldn’t ask for a better life.”

SERMON Share New Single ‘Departure’

London, UK duo SERMON have today shared a new single, titled Departure, along with an accompanying visualizer. The track serves as the closing song to SERMON’s forthcoming second album, Of Golden Verse, and sees chief songwriter Him and drummer James Stewart (Vader and Decapitated) ramp up the intensity of their progressive metal sound.

Of Golden Verse is set for release via Prosthetic Records on March 31.

Stream Departure via Apple Music | TIDAL | Deezer | Bandcamp and Spotify

Speaking on Departure‘s release SERMON‘s Him comments: “Departure is the curtain call of the album. The final climax. It’s a tense topic that describes the horrifying moment between a victim and attacker, within a war crime.

“To match the subject, musically this is the most intense song on the album, and it could only live at the end. I had always had it in my head that I wanted to create a song where I could potentially make a blast beat listenable to an average listener. I had the melody for the vocal and guitar lead infecting my head for months. Always a good basis for a song, and I think if you take the blast away, it could almost be a pop song (in minor, of course). I’m sure this intent alone would make some metal fans recoil in horror, and that’s fine by me.

“James Stewart claims this might be his longest (and favourite) blast beat, which is quite something considering he was in Vader for 3 years. It was honestly magical to watch the take, for something that sounds like a hyper-speed flailing of limbs, the amount of control and precision that’s actually there is astounding and makes it all the more musical.

“So far, this song seems to be getting the most questions from people. For a band that get’s frequently compared to Tool or Katatonia, I think this breaks us away from it and into a different musical space.”

A beacon of iridescent musical light amid the torpid fog of modern life, SERMON blazed brightly but briefly when they released their debut album back in 2019. Led by the shadowy figurehead known only as Him, they blurred boundaries with the aptly titled Birth Of The Marvellous – which earned widespread acclaim and the effusive support of listeners around the world. But then, after a single live show at Prog In Park in Poland, there was only silence.

In the years between then and now, the world has become a darker, nastier place. Summoned from their slumbers for a second time, Him and his collaborators are back with an album that accurately encapsulates the mood of the moment. Recorded at Grindstone Studios under the legendary supervision of producer Scott Atkins, Of Golden Verse was entirely written by Him, but the new songs reached their final, immaculate state through a team effort.

The resulting 10 tracks that make up Of Golden Verse are musically intense, dynamic – and often a startlingly heavy trawl down corridors of corruption and stairways of compromise. First single Golden is a stunning entry point to SERMON‘s reconfigured world; dense with melody and melancholy, it showcases the band’s expanded sonic vision, with lyrics that detail a slow, steady chipping away at the human spirit. There’s no question: Sermon has returned in 2023 with an imperious flourish.

Of Golden Verse tracklist:

2. Royal
3. Light the Witch
4. In Black
5. The Distance
6. Senescence
7. Wake the Silent
8. Golden
9. Centre

Swedish metal rock phenomenon BANNED IN G.B.G. are proud to announce the release of their new 2-track EP “High, Higher!” via Wormholedeath worldwide. The EP features the title track and the song “Patient Zero.”

Starting as a studio project in the fall of 2018, Banned in G.B.G. quickly gained popularity for their fast and loose riffing and for the unique blend of musical backgrounds brought to the band by its members. Their latest album “What The Hell Is Going On?” was released via Wormholedeath worldwide.

The band members have been making noise on the underground rock scene of Gothenburg, Sweden for a while, and their music is not a compromise but an “uncompromise” – a fusion of their favorite kicking sounds.

Banned in G.B.G.’s line-up includes Paul V. on vocals (Tornado Babies, Not Enough Hate), Zee on bass (On Parole, Smash it up), Joke on guitar (The Nuts, Wreckers), Rat on guitar (Cherokee Death Cats, Ladida), and Tommie on drums (Nissses Nötter, Stillborn).

The band stated:

Hi! Right now we’re busy working on new material for a full-length album. But meanwhile, we’d like to give you some new music! Since it’s a new year and all that…
So, here’s an EP for you with two songs that we recorded during the same session as our debut album (What The Hell Is Going On) but have never previously released.
It made sense to release these two songs as a separate EP rather than trying to cram them into an already stacked and intense album. And we wouldn’t want to let them go wasted now would we?
So, we’re looking forward to hearing your thoughts about these two tunes and we really hope you like them.
Where can you go from here? Just Higher and Higher!

The new EP “High, Higher!” and the bonus track “Patient Zero” are now available on all digital platforms HERE

After the 2021 debut EP “Ov Behest” Finnish blackened death metal band ANIMA HERETICAE has been working on their first full length album to be released in autumn 2023. The band’s unique sound is a combination of Scandinavian melodic metal, death metal with black metal elements. The music goes in symbiosis with the visuals, both in live shows and on videos. Now released music video Cimmerian Darkness presents a view to the upcoming debut album’s beauty and epicness.

“Even though pretty much anything we do has the sense of darkness and despair, this song has also a hint of hope in it. Creating new music is quite therapeutic and healing experience for us. And so was the writing of this song – a meditative and self-reflecting process. Some times as wondering this world we live in it feels like we are living in Cimmerian darkness on the edge of the world.” Ville Rutanen and Taneli Jämsä background the song.

We streamlined it from our previous dark concept record. The ten songs on this album are heavy and energized. It’s a metal record with a message and that message is we can do this together but we have no time to waste.” – Kyriakos “Charlie” Tsiolis.
