LUMSK Reveal Double Single ‘Det Døde Barn’ + ‘Das Tode Kind’ from Upcoming Album

When Dark Essence Records recently announced the details of “Fremmede Toner”,  the upcoming release from  Norwegian Folk Prog Rockers LUMSK, it was clear that this was going to be a very unusual  album, as the band explained:

We stumbled upon “Fremmde Toner”, a collection of poems the by Norwegian Author André Bjerke in which he had translated and re-created poems from different English and German speaking poets, and we realised that not only did we want to write music for the Norwegian poems, but also to write music for the original poems themselves. The idea of the concept was not to create the same songs twice, but to make the songs mirror each other in a way, trying to somehow recreate the idea of a translation or re-creation. Thus, as with the poems themselves, the songs are not the same, but are, nevertheless familiar.

In keeping with this concept, Dark Essence Records will be debuting a double single from the album, with Andre Bjerk´s “Det Døde Barn” and Conrad Ferdinand Meyer´s “Das Tode Kind” being the first pair to be released, and, according to LUMSK, this will be the first time that the band can be heard singing in German.

The two tracks can be streamed or downloaded from a variety of services at this location.

When LUMSK were formed in 1999 it was a time when metal bands and fans alike were exploring the use  regional folk traditions within music. Already sure that this was the direction in which they wanted their music to go, and with their use of heavy guitars, keyboard and organs, violins, session horns and female vocals, LUMSK were therefore ideally placed to build themselves from the ground up, and take their place in what was to become a sub-genre all of its own.

Having garnered  a considerable reputation, both at home and internationally, LUMSK took a hiatus which lasted sixteen years from the release of their last album, but now they are back with “Fremmede Toner” which will be the band’s fourth full-length release.

Mixed by Rhys Marsh at Autumnsongs Recordings, and Mastering by Arnstein Fossvik at AudioMaster,  “Fremmede Toner”  is the LUMSK’s most varied and intriguing work to date , demonstrating how the band’s unique blend of metal and Nordic folk music melds together with rich textures and clever arrangements.

Featuring works by some of the most famous European and North American poets, such as Nietzsche, Goethe, Swinburne etc., the “dual” concept of “Fremmede Toner”   is also reflected on the album cover by Per Spjøtvold, someone with whom the band has worked since the beginning.

Track listing is as follows:

  1. Det Døde Barn
  2. En Harmoni
  3. Avskjed
  4. Under Linden
  5. Fiolen
  6. Dagen er Endt
  7. Das Tode Kind
  8. A Match
  9. Abschied
  10. Under der Linden
  11. Das Veilchen
  12. The Day is Done

“Fremmede Toner” will be released on the 5th May in CD, Limited Edition Double LP in Gold and Turquoise vinyl and Digital formats, and is now available to pre-order from the following:

DERHEAD Premiere New Single ‘This Chaos Is For You Only’

“The Grey Zone Phobia” is the fifth release by Avantgarde Black Metal project DERHEAD and it will be released via Brucia Records in digital and 6 panels Digipack CD format on March 30, 2023.

Today, DERHEAD present the new single “This chaos is for you only“. Stream it via No Clean Singing at THIS LOCATION.

The first single “The Death of Now” is streaming at Machine Music.

After the critically acclaimed “Irrational I”, DERHEAD is back with its very own distinctive take on Avantgarde Black Metal, this time contaminated by an incredibly heterogeneous range of sounds spacing from Doom / Gothic Metal to what Satyricon released during the “Rebel Extravaganza” era.

Much like with the previous EP, “The Grey Zone Phobia” offers a meditation about the contrasting nature of our place within the cogwheels of time, leading us to contemplate the contrast between reality and our inner self, and between memories and dreams. Lyrics draw inspiration from various sources including the work by philosophers such as Henri Bergson, relativity studies and fuzzy logic, and far from proposing ready-made answers they in fact underline the complexity of our existence, inviting us to go beyond the apparent dichotomy of black and white and on to face the “grey area”, which ultimately is life itself.

The fantastic original artwork made by Cesare Bignotti (who also lent his vision to the previous two releases of DERHEAD) further expands upon the main themes of the album: images have been taken with a long exposure technique similar to what was used with Dadaist and Futurist photography, and films developed without any artificial effects in post-production, in order to tell an honest and transparent story about the place we as human beings occupy within the abstract instance known as Time.

“The Grey Zone Phobia”
is a multifaceted album that does not try to be forcibly eccentric, but flows effortlessly mixing raw and aggressive riffs with the epic grandeur of more sophisticated and slower parts, keeping listeners on the edge of their seats for its whole duration.

Album tracklist:

1 – The missing stars – 6.21
2 – This chaos is for you only – 5.37
3 – The death of Now – 7.00
4 – Kingdomless – 6.17
5 – Drops of storm – 6.09
6 – Containing the whole – 5.48

DERHEAD is a solo project from Genoa (Italy). The project was created in 2001 by Giorgio Barroccu, a multi – instrumentalist active for many years in various projects and also founder and co-owner of Brucia Records.

From the first demo recorded in 2003 and influenced by the industrial, experimental black metal typical of those years, Derhead has in time developed its very unique style – mixing aggressive riffs to more atmospheric passages.

The second demo released in 2013 already showed signs of compositional maturity and balance which were then refined in the project’s first EP “Via” released in 2016.

In 2020 DERHEAD released its second EP “Irrational I” to critical acclaim, with the release being especially praised by the press for its unique songwriting and emotional intensity.

On March 30th, 2023 – DERHEAD will release its first full-length album “The Grey Zone Phobia” on digital and digipak CD via Brucia Records.

Danish ANGSTSKRÍG Release Single + Video ‘Luk Dine Øjne’ from New Album

This past Friday March 3rd, the Danish black metal duo ANGSTSKRÍG released the third single ‘Luk Dine Øjne’ (Close Your Eyes’) from its sophomore album ‘Angstkrig’ set for a March 31st release. ‘Luk Dine Øjne’ features guitarist Nils Courbaron from Sirenia. The song and video deals with in general with stress and anxiety as a part of the album theme, and specifically the blessing and curse of AI technology and its potential influence on the human mind. The lyrics video will be released March 10th on Despotz Records YouTube Channel.

ANGSTSKRÍG elaborates on the theme and video:

“Like robots are taking over manual labor, AI will gradually take over thinking. This is both a blessing, as it frees up mental capacity for creative thinking, and a curse, because if human beings don’t start to understand themselves as “hackable animals” we will see more mental and intellectual crisis caused by (social media) algorithms like we’ve seen with Brexit, the Trump election and most recently the anti-vaccine online cult. We seek to illustrate this contradiction by, on a conceptual level, using AI-generated animations creatively and, on a visual level, let the AI-animations hijack our entire beings”.”

Danish black metal duo ANGSTSKRÍG returns with its sophomore album ‘Angstkrig’ (Danish for ‘anxiety war’) following up on the 2021 debut album ‘Skyggespil’. ‘Angstkrig’ was created during the pandemic and completed, as the world re-opened. This made its mark on the album’s seven black metallic, genre-fusioning and non-compromising songs, which revolves around and confronts the modern world’s inhuman pressure on the human.

The two Blackened Brothers formed ANGSTSKRÍG in 2019 and intoxicated by inspiration, they quickly wrote the material for the debut album ‘Skyggespil’ (Danish for ‘shadow play’), which was recorded with producer Frederik Brandt Jakobsen, just as a pandemic world locked down. ‘Skyggespil’ was released in 2021, and the duo remained obscure, while the album’s convincing songwriting and unique nordic tone made the rumours of ANGSTSKRÍG spread widely.

ANGSTSKRIG has recently announced a performance at this year’s Horizon 23 festival in Finland at the beginning of June, and more shows will be announced in the time to come.

The story about ANGSTSKRÍG took its beginning towards the end of the last millennium. From a young age the duo were taken under the wing of a common mentor, by whose guidance they taught themselves how to play, write and perform. Here, their urge to create, their artistic curiosity and wealth of ideas as well as the need to challenge boundaries and convictions was founded. And the duo’s common musical journey began. Though life circumstances and choices separated the two and took them down diverging paths, where one pursued the road of knowledge, the other a path of entertainment, they never lost touch, and the idea to reunite remained. So after a decade of gaining invaluable individual experiences, life was now taking new dramatic turns and the time was right to reunite as the two Blackened Brothers in ANGSTSKRÍG.

Since the inception, ANGSTSKRÍG’s vision has been to create music challenging both themselves and the listener. ”No comfort zone” is the underlying principle for the duo for which it is essential to convey thinking and to challenge conventions and thus participate in creating a basis for a better world. Like everything else in this universe, ANGSTSKRÍG is in a state over perpetual becoming. This on both a personal and a musical level – and for the band there are no taboos, only those to break – and one of the most important is the mental health which we all must consider. And which music is better to express discomfort than metal?

The seven tracks on ‘Angstkrig’ encloses the listener in a great sounding darkness which draws especially from both Norwegian black, Swedish melody, Danish groove and Icelandic melancholy. The music is riff based and conveys a solemn vibe spreading throughout the band’s genre fusioning music that carries black metal as the main musical characteristic. The album features guest appearances by the guitarist Mendel (ex-Aborted), Nils Courbaron (Sirenia) and Carl Mörner Ringström, while Danish rapper Jøden delivers a heavy, well-delivered verbal performance.

‘Angstkrig’ is recorded, mixed and mastered by Frederik Brandt Jakobsen in Hikikomori Studio, the artwork is created by NM.AAR, and the album is released March 31st 2023 through Despotz Records.

The brand new SYMPHONY OF SWEDEN EP, “Get Out Of My Mind” was released a little more than one week ago – and it’s one of the band’s most successful releases so far! Hereby we’d like to thank you for all the features so far, we share every one of them in the upcoming days! The title track, “Get Out Of My Mind” was also added to an official Spotify playlist, “All New Metal“.

The official video, which was shot at the same location like “Will She Fight“.

Evan: “Not far away from our town we have this fantastic location ‘Järnverket’, which is an old iron factory. We also recorded the video for ‘Will She Fight’ there, so we know the place and the lightning in the building is already great as well, so it was an easy pick for this track.“

About the new EP, “Get Out Of My Mind”:

One year ago Symphony Of Sweden released their second album, “Saints Of Yesterday“. Since then, a lot has happened: their main hit from the album, “Will She Fight” has reached 1 million streams, and their monthly Spotify listeners number is steady at over 100,000. Even though they haven’t made a new full album yet, the guys still wanted to surprise their fans: the EP, which was released on 1 March by the band, features two new and two remastered tracks, 4 in total. There’s also a new video for the title track, “Get Out Of My Mind“.

Lee’s statement: „I wrote the lyrics for ‘Get Out Of My Mind‘ a long time, like 2 years ago, but I didn’t have music for it. It’s about when you reminisce about a lost love. You think about the good parts and it haunts you. And you can’t get them out of your mind. So, the idea and the story were there, but not the music. But one day, a couple of weeks ago Evan wrote me and said: ‘Now I got it!’ And he had made it perfect.
In the video, it’s me remembering her. And I’m struggling, I’m haunted by her because I can’t stop thinking of her.
The other new track is ‘Down and Counting‘. I love this song. It’s hard, fast, and angry. As I have talked about it before, I got really sick for a long time, I met a lot of doctors. I lost my voice and got some extreme pain. My personal life sucked. It was a very dark time in my life. I started to have some really bad thoughts. But something came over me and my mind changed and I said: hell no, this is not the end!
So, in this song, I see myself like in the boxing ring. I’m Rocky Balboa and keep getting hit again and again. I’m down and counting, but I still get up. This is my survival song, and I’m extremely happy with it.”

Evan’s statement: “For the music, it was time to make a track a little more uptempo than the previous singles. And the chorus turned up pretty nice with a wall of sound kind of vibe.
We actually have had the embryo of the track including the music for some time. But after going back and forth between different versions we recorded new drums played by Niklas ‘Bullen’ Bengtsson and then everything fell into place!
There are four tracks on this EP and except for ‘Get Out Of My Mind‘ there’s another brand new track, ‘Down and Counting‘ as well as two improved mixes of ‘Just Let It Bleed‘ and ‘Lay Them Down (A broken son’s cry)‘. I was not perfectly happy with the mixes and mastering of those two tracks previously, so it was an opportunity to improve on them as well with this release. For ‘Down and Counting‘ I sent Henrik Bodin-Sköld a drum arrangement and some thoughts about the vibe I was after, and he came back with really cool guitars which Lee then could make a top line to.”

And what about the future? Evan: “We are always working on new tracks, but it is hard to say when our third album will be out. Probably after the summer, but before the end of the year.”

“And hopefully we can soon also go on a big tour” – Lee added.

Welcome to the musical world of Symphony Of Sweden!

Coming from the North of Sweden with winter and ice bears all over the place, the music is the other way around. Grand and epic with huge arrangements, the missing link between pop and metal – this is Symphony of Sweden! Add the powerful voice of Linus “Lee” Wester and the creative talent of Pontus “Evan” Hagberg you will have a concept that brings you on a journey from here to eternity.

Symphony Of Sweden is:
Pontus „Evan” Hagberg
Linus „Lee” Wester

Evan and Lee lived in the same small town up north in Sweden. Lee had his own little service point, betting shop, tobacco store nearby which also happened to be Evan’s local service point where he went to get his parcels. After saying hello to each other for a couple of years, there was one day Evan had a parcel to get – which obviously was music-related. They fell into conversation with each other, a few days later Evan invited Lee to his studio. Evan: „he had found one of my instrumental tracks on Youtube and sang it with a new melody on top and lyrics for me in the studio, right there when he just arrived! I was blown away, and a week later we had our first ever track produced and completed. As soon he sang his first two words in the studio I wanted to work with him!”

The band released their first album, Inner Demons in January 2021, and their second album, Saints Of Yesterday came out on the 3rd of February, 2022.

Finnish BESRA Return with Live Studio Film for ‘Dwell In Gloom’

Posted by tarjavirmakari on March 11, 2023
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: BESRA. Leave a comment

Finland-based BESRA first made waves with their debut album, Anhedonia, in 2018. Both critics and audiences praised their hard-hitting and emotionally vulnerable approach to post-metal. Then they retreated to compose new material – a plan that turned out to be more challenging than they thought.

Having dealt with a plethora of personal crises, the isolation of the Covid years and the pain of shedding their skin musically, BESRA is finally back. Having distilled the pain into their strongest work yet, they’re ready to solidify their status as an inventive and original voice.

Before the release of their upcoming second album, the band has released a live film of their performance at the Rødhouse Studio in Turku, Finland. Having spent a lot of time there in the recent years, the space symbolizes both the struggles and the eventual triumph of a group unwavering in their vision.

Directed and shot by filmmaker Atte Heinonen, recorded & mixed by the band’s vocalist Hannes Hietarinta and mastered by none other than Magnus Lindberg from Cult Of Luna, Live At Rødhouse Studio sees BESRA at their genre-bending best. In addition to two new tracks and surprising saxophone parts played by the guest musician Oskari Ruohonen (Oskr, Yournalist), the band presents a jaw-dropping new arrangement of the hard-hitting fan-favourite “Dwell In Gloom.”

Somehow, it all works together – proving that innovative risk-taking is part of BESRA’s DNA.

At turns angry, eerie and surprisingly tender, Live At Rødhouse Studio is both a fitting endnote toa bygone chapter – and a most exciting teaser for the next one.

“As someone who works for the event industry, I’ve witnessed the anxiety of the Corona years up close. During a time when live performances were out of the question, we had to think of other ways to keep the fire burning and improve ourselves as artists. Focusing on the studio environment and how we sounded there felt like a logical shelter. As a result, we managed to create ourselves a new sound, over 60 minutes of recorded music – and this live piece recorded in the studio.” – Hannes Hietarinta, vocalist of BESRA
