DAWN RAY’D Share New Single + Music Video ‘Go As Free Companions’

UK anarchist black metal trio DAWN RAY’D have today released their new single, Go As Free Companions, alongside an accompanying music video – directed by JG Visuals. Go As Free Companions is the third track to be taken from DAWN RAY’D forthcoming third full-length, To Know The Light, which is for release via Prosthetic Records on March 24.

Stream Go As Free Companions via Apple Music | TIDAL | Deezer | Bandcamp and Spotify
Pre-order To Know The Light here.

Speaking on Go As Free Companions, Simon Barr (vocals, violin, synths) comments: “To Know The Light is an exploration of anarcho-nihilism, and Go As Free Companions is our conclusion. We have chosen not to despair in the face of overwhelming odds, but to live while time allows it. If the future is canceled, if the present is all we have, then each minute must be revolutionary; every moment counts, so live these ideas in every moment.

“It is easy to know what we are against, but we must not forget what we are for. Whilst there is joy, love, empathy, kindness, people in need of your help; we cannot give up. You may sometimes feel like it, but you are not alone and you are not powerless, there are huge numbers of us, let’s find each other! Though acrid black clouds race across the horizon we must not forget: today, the sun still shines.”

To Know The Light is a departure from their previous missives in more ways than one. Although still overtly political, the lyrics take on a more personal slant than before. Lyrically, To Know The Light traces the band’s own journey through anarcho-nihilism; from anger, to despair, to a radical acceptance of the darkness all around us, settling on a new understanding of liberation and joy. Whilst much of the thematic content is rooted in rage and resistance, there are also elements of positivity to be found throughout.

Recorded at the Station House in Leeds, in what can arguably be described as an appropriate repurposing of an old police house, and Mynetaur Studios with production by Mark Mynett (Rotting Christ, My Dying Bride) and additional engineering by James Atkinson. DAWN RAY’D have crafted an album high on production values with clean vocals, rich layering and many melodic passages of majestic theatricality, all without compromising intensity.

DAWN RAY’D define folk music as a way to document the injuries, abuses and real-life stories of working class people; a way to disseminate information that would otherwise not be accessible. Sonically speaking, too, they incorporate elements of traditional folk music into their music – notably within the harmonies and layers on tracks such as Requital and Freedom in Retrograde.

Citing influences as genre-diverse as Chumbawumba, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Propagandhi, Lankum, and Crass, it is evident that the message is still as important as the music. The thread that runs through all these bands – and many others – is one that allows for creative expression around common themes of class struggle, freedom and resistance. Much of the lyrical content is poetic in structure and delivery, but never at the expense of straightforward language when necessary. The album’s cover continues this theme of directness, featuring a photograph taken in France by Remi Moon, with additional artwork and layout by Ethan McCarthy. The image features a silhouetted figure in front of a fire at a protest.

Consider this an invitation to disregard preconceptions about DAWN RAY’D and the genre(s) within which they reside. Consider To Know The Light as not just a rallying cry but a sincere offering of a new way of looking at the world.

8. The Journey
9. The Derelict Bay
10. The Fireside
11. The Resolute

Pre-order “The Garden”: http://hanging-garden.org/

HANGING GARDEN formed in 2004, starting out as a heavy, doom-oriented project. Roughly two decades, seven albums and a couple of line-up shuffles later, the band shifted to a more melodic, contemporary sound, surrounded by a veil of melancholy.

The compositions are dark, atmospheric & emotional, and concomitantly lean towards open-minded and playful musicality. While entrenched in metal’s doom, gothic and melodeath branches, HANGING GARDEN displays a versatile, many-layered style of playing, packs female & male vocals, and draws influence & inspiration from music and art, far and wide.

Artwork by Kalle Pyyhtinen

The new album – “The Garden” – dives deep into atmospheres both “tender and harsh, devilish and serene” and “embarks upon a journey to mankind’s spiritual roots, contemplating the fragility of our technological society” – as poetically described by the band. “There is a kind of energy in the songs that there wasn’t before,” introspects Toni Hatakka of HANGING GARDEN. “A feel of hope to contrast our old friend the despair, a strong notion of action against the familiar melancholy, or maybe a light amidst the comfortable gloom…” Read Toni‘s full comment below.

“After almost two decades of dwelling in the musical and lyrical thematics of despair, loss and melancholy, I had the feeling that our next release could have some room for hope and light as well – of course not forgetting our trademark-ish somber aesthetic. The approach we decided to take was to weave a story of how humanity would still thrive, still find meaning, after the world as we know it has finally met its end.”

“Exploring the rituals, belief systems, connection to nature, finding purpose in just being and surviving were the cornerstones of how The Garden came to be. Another strong theme is that of dreams; since childhood, I’ve had this recurring dream world with a silent feel of stagnation, colossal constructs of rust, the action of journeying to the unknown, and lush nature. This is where I also draw a lot of what ended up on the album. The lyrics written by Riikka also amalgamated into this aesthetic perfectly. Even the name was given to me in a dream. Back in spring, I had a dream where our keyboardist Nino and I had a talk about this being our Magnum Opus and that we should call it The Garden. Such a powerful notion could not be left unheeded, and so the album had its name. The Garden is at the same time familiar and atypical for us. There is a kind of energy in the songs that there wasn’t before, a feel of hope to contrast our old friend the despair, a strong notion of action against the familiar melancholy, or maybe a light amidst the comfortable gloom. But in the end, this is us.”

“The Garden”, the follow-up to “Skeleton Lake” (2021), was produced by Jussi Hämäläinen (vocals, guitars) and Jarno Hänninen. The album was mixed and mastered by the latter at D-studio (Beherit, Shape of Despair). Cover artwork and new band photos are by Finnish artist Kalle Pyyhtinen. “The Garden” marks the return of new-old drummer Antti Ruokola, last seen in HANGING GARDEN seven years ago.

HANGING GARDEN may appeal to fans of Swallow the Sun, Ghost Brigade, October Tide, Katatonia and Type 0 Negative.

Line-up:
Mikko Kolari – guitars
Jussi Hämäläinen – guitars, vocals
Toni Hatakka – vocals
Riikka Hatakka – vocals
Nino Hynninen – keyboards
Jussi Kirves – bass
Antti Ruokola – drums

TILINTETGJORT Reveal New Single + Video ‘Hex’ from Upcoming Album

Posted by tarjavirmakari on March 5, 2023

“With glass-shattering riffs and chants for death, ancient rites come to life with Hex” is how Black Metallers TILINTETGJORT describe the new single Dark Essence Records have chosen to release from the band’s upcoming debut full-length album.

And “Hex” certainly is all that, as you can hear for yourselves by either downloading or streaming the track from a variety of services at https://link.darkessencerecords.no/Tilintetgjort_Hex

A video for the track by Den Gamle can be seen below.

Formed in the early summer of 2020 by Oslo-based musicians Den Gamle and Hazzlegard on guitars, and Sturt on bass, TILINTETGJORT’s lineup was completed with the addition of Tybalt on drums and Svik on vocals, and work quickly started on the album that was to become  “In Death I Shall Arise”.

TILINTETGJORT’s Avant-garde Black Metal finds its inspiration in ’90’s Black Metal, along with ’70’s Prog, and a variety of other experimental genres, and by melding them together and adding their own, personal touches, the band creates a nightmarish visions of alchemical madness and arcane mysteries  that blur the line between insanity and reality, filling the listener with dread.

A fierce and passionate band, TILINTETGJORT are one of the more interesting artists to have appeared  on the Oslo Black Metal scene recently.  Their work ethic is not to be doubted, with its members undertaking an arduous creative process and  gruelling rehearsals in order to produce the desired results, both in the studio for “In Death I Shall Arise” and on stage for live performances.

For the recording of “In Death I Shall Arise”  TILINTETGJORT preferred to use some of the older techniques, with the majority of the album being recorded live over  a period of three days.  After a few overdubs in Evil Octopus Studios, the album was mixed at Chaka Khan before being mastered by Jack Control of Enormous Door.

As a result “In Death I Shall Arise” is a focused and inspired piece of work that displays an abundance of creativity on the part of TILINTETGJORT, with the band’s desire to break down the stifling confines of a genre that frequently finds itself stagnating very much in evidence.

Filled with inspiration and madness of the soul, “In Death I Shall Arise” invites the listener to join the band as they embark on a journey to hunt for truth in a widely delusional world, guiding  us through the mysteries of knowledge and death.

Set for release on the 31st March, track listing for  “In Death I Shall Arise” is as follows:

1. Kvikksølvdrømmer
2. Sannhetens Søyler
3. Mercurial
4. Vinter Og Høst
5. Hex
6. Dommedagsmonument

A video for “Mercurial”,  the recently-released first  single from the album can be seen at https://youtu.be/yG8o53ZieA8

“In Death I Shall Arise” will be available in CD, Vinyl and Digital formats and can now be pre-ordered from:

Webshop: https://darkessencerecords.no/kar244-tilintetgjort-in-death-i-shall-arise/
Bandcamp: https://tilintetgjort.bandcamp.com

TILINTETGJORT’s next live appearance will be on Saturday 8th April when they will celebrate the release of the album with a show at Inferno Festival in Oslo.

Progressive metal outfit NE OBLIVISCARIS is now sharing a brand new live video for its seminal song, “And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope,” which was recorded in Melbourne (AU) on May 10, 2019 at 170 Russell. The clip is taken from an upcoming ‘Live in Melbourne’ Blu-Ray performance that will only be available via the special collector’s edition of ‘Exul!’ The video can be seen at THIS LOCATION.

Limited to just 2,000 copies, the special item also contains ‘Exul’ on CD, a 16-page booklet, and a unique media book with a mount-it-yourself acrylic box, figurine and logo!

The band comments, “This live performance video features audio that is almost completely unedited. It’s brilliantly imperfect. A genuine and an authentic representation of what our shows are like. This concert Blu-Ray is a great example of how deeply we care about our music and the connection between ourselves and the audience. It’s six people that have worked for years (decades even) at their craft coming together to bring our music to life for audiences across the world and we are so excited to get back to doing that in 2023. We hope you enjoy this taste of NeO’s Live in Melbourne Blu-Ray. See you all on the EXUL world tour (EU/UK this May and USA/CAN Oct/Nov + more TBA) for our own moment to share together!”

‘Exul’ is due March 24, 2023! The band’s stunning video for the new song “Graal” can be found HERE.

SHORES OF NULL Share Music Video for ‘Destination Woe’

Set for release on March 24th via Spikerot Records, Italian doom metal outfit SHORES OF NULL is gearing up for the release of the band’s highly anticipated new album “The Loss of Beauty”. In support of the soon to be released album, the band has shared a music video for the track “Destination Woe”. Watch the video below.

Shores of Null on “Destination Woe”:

“This is the opening track of our new album ‘The Loss Of Beauty’, if we don’t count the instrumental intro. The lyrics take inspiration from the aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi, which in the Japanese culture consists in the appreciation of all that is imperfect, incomplete, transient. This is actually a recurrent theme throughout the entire album. Beauty can also be intangible, like it can be a childhood memory or a pleasant episode in our life that will never come back, thus giving us a feeling of melancholy. Nothing is forever and we must be aware that everything comes to an end, in this perspective everything that is ephemeral becomes even more beautiful.”

“The Loss of Beauty” is Shores Of Null’s fourth album and follows the acclaimed “Beyond The Shores (On Death And Dying)”, unanimously considered by fans and critics as one of the doom metal gems of recent years. Both albums were recorded between 2019 and early 2020, and although “The Loss of Beauty” was initially conceived as the band’s third album, “Beyond The Shores” took its place as it better reflected the doom and gloom sentiment of the “annus horribilis” 2020.

Across 11 tracks (plus two bonus tracks), Shores Of Null once again submerges listeners with tempestuous and turbulent riffs. The band continues to hone its sound and take its melancholic dark metal to new heights by mastering an assorted palette of genres with inbred poignancy. The lyrics celebrate beauty in imperfection and transience and are meant to be an invitation to seek beauty in little things, especially those unexpected and ephemeral.

“The Loss of Beauty” is dark and heavy, tinged with feelings of despair and melancholy. An album not to be missed and highly recommended for all fans of Amorphis, Enslaved, and Paradise Lost.

The album was recorded by Marco “Cinghio” Mastrobuono at Kick Recording Studio (Hour Of Penance, Inno, Fleshgod Apocalypse). Cover artwork by Sabrina Caramanico.

The album is available for pre-order HERE
