Irish Folk-Metal Pioneers CRUACHAN Release New Epic Music Video for ‘The Reaper’

New music video for ‘The Reaper’ from Irish folk-metal pioneers CRUACHAN. The upcoming ninth album ‘The Living and the Dead, is a wonderful blend of the band’s hardest metal riffs and hauntingly beautiful folk and traditional instruments. The song ‘The Reaper‘ is featured by Sinead Richards, she’s only 14 year old and daughter of Cruachan’s producer.

“She is a huge talent and aded such orchestral heft to this song that we can’t imagine how it would sound without her contribution.” // Keith Fay

Keith about the new song:
‘The song ‘The Reaper’ is about my dad, who sadly passed away in 2020. There was a point when Audrey was layering the strings section for this song, I was listening with Joe and our producer Mick and it literally brought me to tears. I turned to Joe and all I could manage to say was ‘wow’. I did my dad proud with that song but I think we did all of our fans proud with this entire album. I could talk about many other parts in many other tracks but you’ll hear it yourself and see what I mean. I achieved my goal. I created the best Cruachan album to date.’

“From the uplifting excitement and energy of track one, The Living, this album grabs your heart and mind then drags them on a fantastic journey through haunting and foreboding stories put to sublimely beautiful folk and aggressive metal, constantly interweaving until we reach…. The Dead”
– Jon Campling / Actor (Harry Potter, Final Fantasy)

Ireland’s Cruachan have enjoyed a storied career since they took those tentative first steps back in 1992. As frontman and sole original member Keith Fay elaborates; ‘When I started writing music as a 13-year-old, I had no idea that I was laying the foundations for what would become a brand-new genre, Folk Metal, or that I was planting the seeds of what would be one of the longest running Irish metal bands in history. There have been many ups and downs over the last thirty years, band members have come and gone, record deals have come and gone. We’ve played some of the biggest metal festivals on the planet, travelled to more countries than most Irish bands would ever dream possible. And it has all led to this – our ninth album, ‘The Living and the Dead’.’

‘From the opening blast of ‘The Living’ to the final lament of ‘The Dead’, the Living and the Dead is everything you want from Cruachan and more. 12 tracks of Blistering riffs, magnificent melodies, and bewitchment.’  – Stu ‘La Rage’ Dixon / Venom

A man whose vision and passion for his band has never wavered in the ensuing three decades, Cruachan’s place in, not only in metal history, but that of Ireland’s musical landscape, has been hard earned and hard fought. But Fay was always confident that he and the band would always deliver. ‘This album had to be good. No, it had to be better than good. This had to be the best Cruachan album ever made. I faced a decision in 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, when three band members left the band. ‘Do I call it a day? or do I press on with the mammoth task of replacing everyone’. There was no real decision to be made, I worked way too hard over the years to allow Cruachan to fizzle out. I had been writing some of the best music of my career in recent years. I secured a record deal with a label (Sweden’s Despotz Records) that understood exactly what Cruachan and my vision is’.

How many words do you want in this quote, Keith? Because I could go on all day about how f**king good this album is’. – Gareth Murdock / Alestorm

With the deal signed, talk obviously turned to new music. ‘The new album only existed in my head but he still pushed me to get a single out. We recorded The Hawthorn and the reaction was immense.’ Buoyed by the amazing reaction to the single, Fay recruited new members for Cruachan in ‘record time’. ‘Joe Farrell had already re-joined Cruachan on bass at the start of 2020, apart from being one of my oldest friends, he was also my rock during this time. Tom (Woodlock), one of the best metal drummers in Ireland, joined us early in 2020. I’ve known Dave Quinn for many years so was a relief that I didn’t need to audition for guitarists, he came in and was a natural fit for the band. I did advertise for a folk instrumentalist and had a few interesting applications. Audrey sent me a mail with some links to her playing. My jaw literally dropped and I recruited her right away. She has been playing violin since the age of 4, the quality she brings to every aspect of Cruachan is beyond compare, from our folky stuff to our classical stuff, it has all just moved to a level I never thought possible.’

‘It was a pleasure to be a part of this project, the fusion of heavy metal and folk music on this album is furious, organic, and natural. Folk metal fans are in for a treat.’  – Camillus Hiney / The Fureys

New line-up in place, and a clutch of songs Fay felt were among the strongest he’d ever written for the band, the time came to enter the studio to work on what would become ‘The Living and the Dead’. ‘Finally, in April 2022, we entered Trackmix studios to start recording. The quality and maturity of our new material was obvious right away. There have always been elements of classical music in Cruachan’s material but I explored this a lot more on some of the new songs. The honesty and credibility in the finished songs takes my breath away.

‘This album has everything from groovy death to the folkiest of metals! If you’re a true folker then this album is for you!’  – Mathias ‘Vreth’ Lillmans / Finntroll

Bay-Area’s LARVAE to Release New Album “Entitled to Death” on April 7th

Bay-area death-doom metallers LARVAE will be releasing their new album, “Entitled To Death”, on April 7th 2023 via Fucking Kill Records.

The band is now sharing the first single, the title track, at THIS LOCATION.

Oakland, California has summoned the rituals of many metal legions over the decades. Its stench is filled with dark art, morbid riffs, death and doom. There’s a scorched place in the corner of the crumbling landscape evoking evil and witchy magic where Larvae feast on the remains of those who perished.

“Entitled To Death” pursues a human experience, traversing the middle realm seen thru the eyes of a defected warrior. Bound to a reality of misanthrope, power, and trauma the protagonist seeks balance until the final collapse in a land filled with ruin and loss. The crossover compositions and lyrical anecdotes grapple with mental health and self worth before crossing over into a cosmic abyss.

Inspired by 90’s legends like Runemagick, Paradise Lost, Immolation, Bolt Thrower, Neurosis and Dismember, Larvae decompose Death and Doom metal to emote thru narrative and conjure dismal hallucinations.

The sophomore album by LARVAE unveils a bare-boned trio led by founding member vocalist/ guitarist/ engineer Brad Kobylczak (Eulogy, Kuru, Machine Head, Green Day) who’s accompanied by the low end marauding of bassist Wyatt Culbertson (Born/Dead, Abrupt) and the percussive barrage of Eric Evert (Rebels Advocate) on drums. Since 2011, LARVAE have been ruminating on their own breed of death/ doom atmosphere conjoined with blackened passages and macabre riffing to align the unique anatomy forming what stands today. “Entitled To Death” delivers a slab of morbidity to scrape away festering corpses into heaps of liquified tissue.

Album tracklist:

Spanish power melodic metallers DREAMYTH will be releasingthe debut album “Aletheia” on April 14, 2023, via Rockshots Records. Combining heavy riffs, epic and majestic orchestrations, modern synths, and stunning vocal and harmonies with finesse like no one else, the band delivers high caliber album with special guests Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear), Herbie Langhans (Firewind, Avantasia), Bob Katsionis (ex-Firewind) and Eduardo Guilló (Sun of the Dying, Crusade of Bards). Dreamyth intends to conquer the heart of metal fans all around the world.

In support of the full-length, the band is sharing their latest music video for the track “Odyssey” featuring guest growl vocals from Eduardo Guilló (Crusade of Bards, Sun of the Dying).

The band explains the track in further detail:

““Odyssey” has one of our favourites choruses, epic and melodic where the vocalists show their power. It is the first song on the album, a drum roll moved by the wind breaks the silence to lead the way to one of the heaviest tracks on the record, powerful riffs and synthesizers command, and without knowing very well how, the adventure begins. Andrea and Edu introduce themselves in a combination of beautiful melodies and raw growls answering each other. The Etesian winds, those that mysteriously brought them here, predict a change. Before you know it, you’ll be right into the chorus, one of the catchiest on the album, a main melody sung by Andrea accompanied by numerous backing vocals from Dani, who bursts onto the scene without going unnoticed, plus even more guttural responses from Edu, three distinct vocal lines that merge at the end of the chorus to give it a force out of the ordinary. Bravery! Odyssey! Are the Battle Cries. Melodic, a lot of dynamism between the different vocal registers that our singers display here. With more vocal ornaments than instrumental compared to others, Odyssey is called to be one of the favorites of the album as it is for us.”

Dreamyth was formed in 2020 by guitarist and composer Adrián Carrero (Crusade of Bards) and drummer David Macarrilla. Dreamyth crafted its name by combining the words “Dream” and “Myth”, which they described as “a new world beyond imagination where its Myths and legends are real”. Andrea Carrero completed the core of the project after singing on all the song demos (released and unreleased). Soon after they were joined by Paolo Andreotti (Crusade of Bards) and second vocalist Dani G.

Band co-founder Adrián Carrero’s passion for classical history and culture, especially his stories about mythology in different cultures influences the lyrics that accompany the band’s compositions. Everything takes place in a new world where they are the Gods, Aletheia.

The concept album transports fans to a new world “ALETHEIA”, and the myth and legends that surround it are sometimes approached from a philosophical point of view.

“The idea was born from the need to give a new approach to the way of telling the myths of our world. Over the years, these stories derived from cultural traditions or legends, which have a deep symbolic meaning and usually involve a lesson, have been shared in different ways and have always generated a certain curiosity and inspiration in society. Luckily, there are tons of myths and legends and often many variations of the same core story between different cultures.” adds Adrián Carrero.

This first album focuses on the creation of this new world and its beginning, giving rise to a polytheistic culture where the band members are the most revered Gods with different attributes. In this approach, the band makes its own reinterpretation of some classical myths (including references to some of the most famous Greek mythologies) mixed with different personal experiences and concerns. With two lead vocals, the record brings a constant contrast, giving more life to the melodies and strengthening specific parts with numerous backing vocals. Apart from them, the first-class guests bring much more musical variety, and metal fans will be surprised and in their comfort zone at the same time with this album. Epic and catchy melodies mixed with a powerful instrumental background.

The musical composition of the album is clearly influenced by the great power metal and symphonic groups, some of the band members’ favorite genres. “Aletheia” incorporates flourished power, pop, metal, and rock songs combined with incredible storytelling of a mythical, and unique world filled with wonderful shades of “light in the dark.” On it, you can see a lot of guitars with doubled melodies, keyboards interacting with these melodies, epic orchestrations with a high level of detail, a lot of contrasts… music with a big amount of different sounds, from intimate ballads with only acoustic instruments to furious riffs leading to epic or darkness places.

Adrián Carrero adds, “The band and I are so excited to bring you the first chapter of our story! We’ve been working really hard on all this music, making the stories connect and the music itself reflect the plot of each. It’s definitely the most time we’ve spent on a musical project and the first time I’m leading all the work, from the first song ideas to the lyrics. We hope people enjoy it as much as we did forging it.”

Dreamyth is recommended for fans of Avantasia, Firewind, and Beast in Black.
