New Jersey’s SUNROT are today premiering the music video for their new single, Patricide, via YouTube. Patricide is the sludge and noise quintet’s second track to be taken from their sophomore album, The Unfailing Rope, which is set for release on April 7 via Prosthetic Records. SUNROT’s Patricide is available to stream via Bandcamp now and will be available on all streaming platforms this Friday (March 3).

Speaking on Patricide‘s release, SUNROT comments: “Patricide is a song about taking back control from those people and forces that try to exert control over you. It’s a song about empowerment, surviving, healing and breaking those cycles of abuse that so many of us have been put through. Even though this track is embued with a venom and anger, we want people who have experienced these traumas to feel seen. We want this to be an invitation to choose yourself and choose healing, as difficult as that process can be.

“A few of us have backgrounds working in community care of different varieties and so much of what we need to heal as a people is horror we have individually experienced at home either currently or as kids. Folks engaging with that trauma and clawing their way to the other side is one of the most important and powerful things a person can do.

At times The Unfailing Rope seemed to be a cursed project; recorded no less than three times before hitting the jackpot with its final iteration, completing the record was a hard-fought battle. Vocalist Lex Santiago was hospitalised between the first and second recordings, suffering from a psychotic episode. Although it may have seemed like an albatross around their necks, The Unfailing Rope eventually provided salvation and catharsis for SUNROT in ways they had never anticipated.

Reflecting on the difficulties they overcame collectively to reach a point where the album was fit for release, the band are resolute in finding joy in the debris of the experience. Whilst the musical output is gritty, venomous and far beyond heavy, it is healing, acceptance and forgiveness that is at the heart of what drives SUNROT forward as a band. Coupled with a DIY ethos that connects them firmly to their roots, SUNROT are determined to be a force for good, despite the pain and darkness embedded in their music.

The third and final recording was captured by Scot Moriarty at Backroom Studios in Rockaway, New Jersey, and later mastered by Magnus Lindberg of Cult of Luna. The trial and error of earlier sessions led to a more precise execution of their vision, a more confident approach and a ultimately more live and organic sounding record than they’d originally anticipated. Their take on sludge is adrenalised by the addition of samples, noise and experimentalism. With guest musicians including Bryan Funck, Emily McWilliams, and Blake Harrison (Pig Destroyer) adding embellishments to the core SUNROT sound, the final result is electrifying.

SUNROT is very much a product of its environment; The Unfailing Rope an anthology of the lived experiences of authors. From the micro to the macro, personal to political, every scar, every tale is etched into the fabric of The Unfailing Rope with unflinching detail. SUNROT keen to stress that for all of the trauma, loss and catharsis, joy is only just below the surface.

The Unfailing Rope tracklist:
1. Descent
2. Trepanation
3. Gutter
4. The One You Feed
5. The Cull
6. Patricide
7. Tower of Silence
8. Love

JOETOWN Pay Homage to AC/DC Anthem + Bring Bagpipes Back to Rock’n’Roll

Bagpipes & Rock’n’Roll. If not for the venerable Bon Scott & AC/DC these two things would have remained mutually exclusive. But, for Joetown, it served as inspiration for the style and sound of the band to which they are so proud. Joe gave some insight, “Kerry Gollarney (Guitarist and Bagpiper) is a secret weapon! When those pipes come out the crowd goes f’n mental, it’s like a war cry!”. The new single is a remade version of the Bon Scott era  AC/DC  classic “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)” and is complete with video of the band rolling through the city streets in major civic events such as the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. “The video just happened to work out since we have been doing so many public events, I figured, let’s do it like the original AC/DC video they did through the streets of Melbourne. The song and the video are a way to honor how much the song and lyrics have been an inspiration – they are our musical heroes and I think we capture the spirit of what it is all about.”

Frontman Joe Delaney, (also the voice of popular hair rockers Bomber Alley), gives the signal of much more bagpipes in the mix and is excited that the next single is an original tune that features the pipes, “that sound is stuck in my head now and as a songwriter, I hear melody in that register every time, similar to having its a horn section or B3 player.”

The band will be performing at the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Hartford & New Haven Connecticut, USA, March 11th & 12th with a release party at their hometown haunt, Cherry Street Station in Wallingford on St Patrick’s Day, March 17th.

“Good to see this band called Joetown, from another generation and continent, do a very authentic and respectful retake of the iconic AC/DC video that I was involved in ‘Long Way To The Top’,” says Michael Browning, AC/DC Manager (1974-1979).

Chris Slade (Ex-AC/DC) is quoted as saying, ”Great Pipes!”

FORETOKEN have premiered their new single and its accompanying music video, Serpent King’s Venom, via Distorted Sound. Serpent King’s Venom is the third track to be taken from the Virginia, VA blackened death metal duo’s forthcoming sophomore album, Triumphs, which is set for release via Prosthetic on March 17.

Serpent King’s Venom will be on all streaming platforms on Friday, March 3

Speaking on the single premiere, Steve Redmond (guitar and orchestration) comments: “Serpent King’s Venom is one of the groovier tracks on Triumphs. When we approached writing the song, we felt the album needed that slower, heavier change of pace. We wanted it to be dark and heavy but still maintain melody. I think we managed to capture that here. We hope everyone digs this one!”

Vocalist, Dan Cooley adds: “Zahhak, the Serpent King is finally here! When I was researching stories for Triumphs this was one of the first I decided on including because it’s so awesome. It’s also the first song written where there’s a dialogue between two characters (Zahhak and Ahriman). Overall, we think we captured the essence of the story and hope you enjoy the song as much as we do.”

Following their 2020 debut long player, Ruin, FORETOKEN’s latest album sees the group expand upon their foundations of meticulously lofty soundscapes, mythological narratives, and elaborate musicianship. Utilizing traditional narratives of myths, legends, and folklore from a wide range of Western and Middle Eastern origins, Triumphs examines the ignored collateral damage of the cost of victory through these established mythos. Stories throughout Triumphs include the tale of the Persian epic poem Shahnameh, written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi (referenced in Serpent King’s Venom), Zhong Kui, the mythological Chinese King of Ghosts (Demon Queller) and Mexico’s The Weeping Woman, La Llorona (The Wraith That Weeps).

Taking musical inspiration from melodic and tech death metal, as well as power, folk and black metal, FORETOKEN’s core sound on Triumphs is bolstered by subtle and captivating use of traditionally Scandinavian, Southeast Asian, and Middle Eastern instruments for atmospheric depth within the album’s 51 minute runtime. Reunited once again with Hannes Grossmann (Hate Eternal, Alkaloid, Obscura, Necrophagist, Blotted Science, and Triptykon) on drums and boasting a guest guitar appearance by The Black Dahlia Murder’s Brandon Ellis on penultimate track A Tyrant Rises As Titans Fall, FORETOKEN’s technical prowess shines through without overpowering any of the nine songs’ rhythmic charge.

Triumphs was penned throughout 2021 by both Steve Redmond (guitar and orchestration) and Dan Cooley (vocals), with the pair settling on eight original compositions and a cover of Naglfar’s I Am Vengeance. Grossmann then commenced drum tracking at his own studio, Mordor Sounds, with guitars recorded by Redmond himself and vocals captured at Trepan Studios by Tony Petrocelly, before mixing and mastering duties were placed in the accomplished hands of Jacob Hansen (Arch Enemy, Fleshgod Apocalypse, The Black Dahlia Murder, and more) at Hansen Studios.

Visually tied together by portrait artist Tomas Honz’s detailed cover painting, depicting a protagonist’s journey in the aftermath of battle, Triumphs aesthetic component is a symbolic embodiment of the duo’s enduring fascination with historial consequence via a folkloric lens. Taking fables and fantasy to extreme sonic heights, FORETOKEN’s Triumphs is as lofty in ambition as it is accomplished in its musicianship and songcraft.

Triumphs tracklist:
1. Revenant of Valor
2. Demon Queller
3. The Wraith That Weeps
4. The Labors
5. Serpent Kings Venom
6. His Riastrad
7. Devil o’ the Sea
8. A Tyrant Rises as Titans Fall
9. I Am Vengeance (Naglfar cover)

WEIGHTLESS WORLD, a melodic metal band from Jyväskylä Finland, released their debut album The End Of Beginning in 2019 and are finally preparing to launch it’s follower. The second album’s name remains yet unpublished but it will be released in fall 2023. The new single and music video ‘Initiate Restart’ from the upcoming album has been released now!

‘’Initiate Restart is a true metal banger flavored with well-timed twists and pinnacled with a trademark big and epic WW-chorus. The song has been tested a few times live and results have been very convincing!’’, tells Valtteri Viinikka, the band’s guitarist.

The song’s straightforward rhythm, explosive energy and irresistible catchiness are familiar features of the band.

‘’In summary it’s a tight and catchy song where influences from some of our favorite bands are slappin high fives with each other’’, adds Kari Rannila, the drummer of the band.

As for the music video the game is on and stakes are high.

‘’The music video is about pondering whether life and death are in our own hands or just dictated events by someone or something else. What if our lives are only a game of chess where the moves made by you determine how long you can keep up with death?’’, Perttu Korhonen, the band’s singer, explains.

‘’The topic can be also approached by thinking what kind of bet would be enough for you to put it all on the line. How high the reward or even how bad your present situation must be in order for you to risk your health, wealth, relationships and even yourself so you can aim for the better you desire?’’, adds Viinikka.

Swing of the Blade: More Stories from Metal Blade Records follows Brian Slagel‘s critically acclaimed 2017 book, For the Sake of Heaviness, which delivered a compelling inside look at how a metal-obsessed California teen built Metal Blade Records into the preeminent international home of heavy music. Rabid readers demanded more anecdotes, more bands, and more of Slagel’s musical wisdom. With Swing of the Blade, he delivers. Featuring a foreword by Slayer‘s Kerry King, the new book is part memoir, part music-business primer, and all metal – delving deep into scenes and bands that fans worldwide obsess about. Slagel serves up more of his favorite memories about iconic musicians and events, and delves into even greater detail about his long and ongoing relationships with  Metallica,  Armored Saint, King Diamond and other heavyweights. Swing of the Blade is told in Slagel’s humble but authoritative voice. His view for the last 40 years-from the studio, side-stage and boardroom-offers an unprecedented look into the music, business, and passion that has made both Slagel and Metal Blade champions of discovering and nurturing the best heavy music on the planet.

Amazon’s pre-orders for Swing of the Blade: More Stories from Metal Blade Records are now live HERE!

In the coming weeks, Metal Blade Records will be launching their own exclusive pre-order bundle that will include a bookmark, patch, 40th anniversary medal, and signed bookplate, while supplies last!

About Metal Blade Records:
Founded upon owner Brian Slagel‘s enduring drive to find great bands and get their music out to as many people as possible, since 1982 Metal Blade has brought wave after wave of powerful, innovative, and often genre-defining music to the ever-hungry metal masses. It is this ethos that has seen Metal Blade build up a stunning and diverse catalog, weather the various storms facing any independent label, and in an age of declining record sales boast the most successful years of its existence as it celebrates its fourth decade.

Metal Blade Records launched Metallica, Slayer, Armored Saint, Fates Warning, GWAR, Cannibal Corpse, Amon Amarth, Whitechapel, The Black Dahlia Murder, Cattle Decapitation, and dozens more genre giants, shaping four decades and counting of hard rock, metal, and extreme music culture. Brian Slagel worked as a record store clerk when he founded Metal Blade in 1982, reserving a spot for a young Lars Ulrich on his Metal Massacre compilation series. Metal Blade grew from humble beginnings in Los Angeles to become an international powerhouse, selling millions of albums while remaining fiercely independent. In 2017, Slayer‘s Kerry King inducted the label into the Hall of Heavy Metal History. Slagel‘s For the Sake of Heaviness: The History of Metal Blade Records arrived the same year.

April 28, 2023 will see the masters of heavy metal, pagan, folk and melodic death metal, ELVENKING, return to fantasy with their epic, new album “Reader Of The Runes – Rapture”, through AFM Records! The band’s eleventh studio album marks the sequel to their 2019 magnum opus “Reader of the Runes – Divination”.

Following previously-released album singles, “Rapture” and the epic anthem “The Hanging Tree”, today, Elvenking have premiered a music video for “Bride Of Night”, featuring former DRACONIAN vocalist Heike Langhans! Says the band:

“We are proud to present our new song  and video “Bride of Night”. It surely represents the more melodic side of our sound, yet dark and melancholic. We know that a lot of our fans love this side of Elvenking, so this is also a gift to you. “Reader of the Runes – Rapture” will collect all of the shades of our sound from the more aggressive ever, to songs like Bride of Night so, by listening to the entire album you will travel through a multitude of nuances and atmospheres – we cannot wait for you to hear it in all its epicness!

Heike Langhans offered her beautiful voice in the chorus backing Damna vocals. The amazing video is once again directed by Matteo Ermeti who did with us “Silverseal” and he couldn’t better envision the story – a glimpse of painful romance that captures one of the chapters of the story.”

On their forthcoming album, Elvenking set sail to horizons more distant than ever before, boldly taking the world by storm with their quintessentially unique approach to heavy, powerful music. As guitarist Aydan and vocalist Damna recently commented, “Part 2 is darker, it needed to be tragic and violent and this gave us the chance to fully breathe the soundscape we already had in mind as we started to write songs in early 2020. We feel that with this album, we have cast a milestone and set a further limit in what we can do by mixing wisely what we deeply love in metal. We are very satisfied with all the shades that compose these eleven songs; altogether they make a canvas we are very proud of.”

Ever since their inception in 1997, Elvenking mastered their way to their own identity with courage and bravado, leaving behind the shackles of genres step by step before they truly broke out with their 2014 monument “The Pagan Manifesto”. Elvenking have been defying all genres, now feeling quite at home in their very own enchanted realm. With “Rapture”, the Italian collective delivers part two of their monumental “Reader of the Runes” trilogy, and an epic metal quest of woe and despair, wrought with mysterious figures, dark magic and an altogether mesmerizing autumnal flair reminiscent of a forest glade during an Indian Summer. It’s more than just a metal album. It’s a moving story set to fabulous songs, bridging the gap between fantasy and reality. Many times before, Elvenking have weaved powerful magic into the world. This time, they truly came into their own, wresting their best effort yet from a global pandemic.

“Reader Of The Runes – Rapture” was written between 2020 and 2022, and was recorded between May and October 2022 by the band and renowned producer Scott Atkins (Cradle of Filth, Behemoth) who also took over mixing and mastering duties.

Set to be released on April 28, 2023 through AFM Records, the album pre-sale is available at THIS LOCATION!
