DEWOLFF Announce New Album “Love, Death & In Between”, Unveil First Song

DeWolff will release their brand-new album Love, Death & In Between on 3 February via Mascot Records / Mascot Label Group. They’ve also revealed the video to the new song “Heart Stopping Kinda Show,” which you can watch below. The band also kick off a 13-date European tour supporting The Black Crowes today, tickets are HERE.

DeWolff are not a band to sit still. They thrive on constant motion. From psychedelic southern rock warriors to emissaries of soul. They’ve released five albums in the last four years, with 2021s Wolffpack becoming their highest charting record, reaching #2 in their native Netherlands, only missing out to Foo Fighters for the #1 spot.

Love, Death & In Between is a reaction to their previous two studio albums. Tascam Tapes, which was recorded on the road with a four-track cassette recorder from the 1980s and the socially distanced recording of Wolffpack. “For this, we wanted to do something with people, as many people as possible,” singer/guitarist Pablo van de Poel says.

The lightning strike moment for Love, Death & In Between came via Memphis. “In 2019, I attended a sermon by Al Green at his own church, and it was a life-changing experience, musically,” Pablo remembers. “I was in there for one minute, and I was crying. He would be talking about someone who can’t pay their bills and would say, ‘I call up to the almighty saviour to help her.’ It was met with the sound of ‘Yeaaah! Yeaaah’s!’ The band would play two chords, which was beautiful. I was intensely touched by it. It left a profound impact on me. I wanted to do something like that at a live show, but we didn’t have any songs that fit. When we started writing, I wanted to do something like that, an almost religious experience. Because, after all, music does feel like a religion to us. It’s something that’s in our minds all the time. It’s what we dedicate our whole lives to.”

Watch the video for the new song “Heart Stopping Kinda Show” here:

In May 2022, they went to Kerwax, an analogue studio in the village of Loguivy-Plougras in Brittany. “We thought, let’s go on an adventure,” he says. Located in North-western France and surrounded by forests, they retreated to the residential studio for two weeks, engulfed in vintage recording equipment from the 1940s to the 1970s.

Recording live to tape, with no overdubs, brothers Pablo (guitar/vocals) and Luka van de Poel (drums/vocals) alongside Robin Piso (Hammond/Wurlitzer) were joined by a host of friends for the recordings. “We brought extra people and wanted their signature on it. Playing with ten people in one room is chaotic. Every take you do, somebody is not satisfied with how they play. But you realise what is important about a take.”

Everything was recorded fully analogue and directly to tape, no computers were used in the making of the album. The tapes were then sent to a mastering engineer who cut it straight to a lacquer that was used for the vinyl pressing – even this mastering and cutting was done fully analogue.

The themes of the album were partly inspired by novels from 20th-century American authors, particularly John Steinbeck’s ‘Tortilla Flat. “There is a quote from him, ‘The good story lay in half-told things which must be filled in out of the hearer’s own experience,’ and that was something I really wanted to do with lyrics on this record.”

At the same time, the band were deep diving intoold soul and R&B records – Sam Cooke, The Impressions, The Coasters, The Clovers, Ray Charles and Little Richard, as well as a heavy dose of gospel – The Soul Stirrers, Al Green and early records by The Staple Singers.

“Counterfeit Love,” wears its heart on its sleeve, whereas the 16-minute “Rosita” shows their progression. “How I want to write now, is more reflected in songs like this,” he says. “I wanted those lyrics to feel like a story, but also a journey within itself.” “The Queen of Space and Time” follows the same character, “I wrote that in a dream,” he laughs. “It’s the same person. A god-like female figure that controls all kinds of crazy dark stuff. Also, with Rosita, the only way to be with her is to be asleep or dead, so it’s a combination of love and death. That’s where the album name comes from.”

“Heart Stopping Kinda Show” is “how I see life,” he says. “Life is the heart-stopping kinda show. I was writing with ‘Tortilla Flat’ in mind. These characters are not constantly overthinking things; they live, drink wine, and have these beautiful moments. They are doing the ultimate living. In the song, I wanted to describe the things in life that are beautiful.” “Will o’ the Wisp” has a seductive darkness, whilst “Night Train,” “Message for my Baby”, and “Wontcha Wontcha” are joyous roof-raisers.

Out of the rural surroundings of Brittany, DeWolff left with twelve songs, over four tapes, with friends, having fun and remembering what is most important to them. On a diet of Al Green, Sam Cooke, and John Steinbeck, they’ve created some of their most soulful but rousing music. When they sing, “Hey there baby won’t you come on in, I got plenty of old records that we can play, some rhythm & blues, some old rock ‘n roll, yes, the type of stuff that can save a soul”, you better get ready for that heart-stopping kinda show.

THERION Release New Single ‘Marijin Min Nar’, “Leviathan II” Album Out October 28th

With over 100+ million streams and a tremendously successful album released just a year ago, symphonic metal titans THERION have not been idle and continue their epic Leviathan trilogy with striking new single ‘Marijin Min Nar‘.

Christofer comments:
“When we did the songwriting for the Leviathan trilogy, it was basically me and Thomas Vikström that wrote everything. Nalle came up with one song and Christian Vidal came up with one too. But what they lacked in quantity, they made up with quality, as they both delivered a song that we thought was a good choice for a single.

Singles are usually the most commercial songs on an album, as the purpose of a single is not just to tease the fans, but also to throw out a hook to the general public and see if you catch some new listeners. ”Marijin Min Nar” is different in that regard, as it is not one of the more commercial songs. But instead it is a ”regular” song that both ourselves, people at Nuclear Blast and people we know who heard the album all found to be one of the most likeable songs on the album. So we though we’d have a go with this one as a single.
“

With defiant determination rarely found in a metal band, THERION have always and exclusively done what they deemed right. They never stuck to a successful formula for the sake of it, they never released the same album twice, and they never gave in to fickle friends like expectation, commercial aspects or trends. Which makes it all the more astounding that now, 35 years deep into their storied career, they are doing something every fan had hoped for but never actually thought possible. Enter Leviathan, enter a trilogy focusing on all the trademark elements that THERION are beloved by countless metal fans around the globe for. After the first part set hearts aflame in 2021, evoking goosebumps and reminiscing around the glory days of the nineties, the symphonic metal grand-seigneurs continue their surprisingly fan-friendly path with their epic odyssey Leviathan II.

“We wanted to give fans what they want this time,” musical professor Christofer Johnssoninforms us from his sunny new home on Gozo, Malta.

“We have been doing what we wanted for so long we just thought it fair to turn the tables just this once.” Turning 50, you might misinterpret a move like this with a certain mellowing of age. You couldn’t be more wrong, of course: Johnsson is still the musical frontiersman, looking for new challenges and hero’s journey under every stone he turns. However, after having finished the insanely sophisticated, elaborate triple album rock musical “Beloved Antichrist”, even a Christofer Johnsson felt he had reached a certain frontier here. “After‘ Beloved Antichrist’ I was lacking direction because I had done everything I ever wanted to do or achieve.” He sat down with lead vocalist Thomas Vikström to ponder their next move when it quickly dawned on them: “The only thing we never did was give the fans exactly what they wanted,” he grins drily.

Masters of Sumerian black metal, MELECHESH, are proud to release the fully instrumental version of their acclaimed 2010 album, The Epigenesis. The album was among the first productions of Istanbul’s then newly built flagship recording studio Babajim. It features a variety of traditional instruments, such as yayli tanbur, Azeri tar, baglama saz, Indian sitar and Persian santur, as well as 12-string guitars, evoking the spirit of Istanbul, a city that has always been a melting pot of different cultures. Right on time for the album’s twelfth anniversary, MELECHESH invite you to revisit The Epigenesis and dive back into its immersive and eclectic compositions that can easily hold their ground even without the vocal tracks present. As of today, The Epigenesis: The Instrumentals is available for your listening pleasure on all digital streaming platforms worldwide.

MELECHESH founder Ashmedi commented:
“A gem from the vaults of Nuclear Blast. When we did The Epigenesis, we made a version without any vocals and adjusted the mix and mastering accordingly. The result turned out to be phenomenal. With this version, there are a lot of hidden melodies and nuances. The listeners can immerse themselves in the music and make it their own journey. The great part is having all of you Nomads out there doing vocal covers to whatever song you like. It will have your own personal touch. I wont be there to back you in the track, it is your own gig! Immerse yourselves, bang your heads, and journey to the depth of your microcosms with The Epigenesis: Instrumentals”

WIZRD Reveal New Single ‘Fire & Water’

In less than a month’s time WIZRD are set to release their debut full-length album  “Seasons” on Karisma Records, and, as a taste of things to come, the label has released a new single from the Norwegian Rockers.

What is particularly interesting about the chosen track “Fire & Water” is that it is one that marks the very beginning  of WIZRD’s existence and therefore fans have the opportunity to trace the band’s progression in terms of writing and concept, from the ground up.   It is also a track on which WIZRD were lucky enough to attract WHITE DENIM’s JAMES PETRALLI to perform guest vocals.

As WIZRD’s Hallvard Gaardløs explains:

“Fire & Water” was one of the very first songs we wrote together as a group, even before the band was called WIZRD. I think this one and the track “All Is As It Should Be” dates all the way back to 2015! I have been a huge White Denim fan ever since I saw them at Hove Festivalen in 2008, so to have James Petralli sing this song was a big deal for me. I was nervous as hell when I called him on Zoom, but he turned out to be a great guy, and his performance is simply incredible. I hope you enjoy listening to “Fire & Water” as much as we enjoyed making it!

The single, “Fire & Water”, can be streamed or downloaded from a number of services at https://link.karismarecords.no/Wizrd_FireAndWater

Consisting of Hallvard Gaardløs (SPIDERGAWD, DRAKEN and more) on bass and lead vocals, Karl Bjorå (MEGALODON COLLECTIVE and more) on guitar and vocals, Vegard Lien Bjerkan (SOFT FFOG and more) on keyboards and vocals and Axel Skalstad (KROKOFANT, SOFT FFOG and more) on drums, WIZRD’s lineup met when they were all students at the prestigious Jazz Conservatory in Trondheim.

By combining their respective musical interests and the skills they learned at the Conservatory, WIZRD have, with “Seasons”,  created a debut album that mixes progressive and improvisational elements, with Rock and Pop overtones.  In fact, “Seasons”  makes it very clear that the band is happy to test their limits and break a few rules in order to fill the album with  beautiful vocal harmonies, stunning melodies, quirky jazz grooves driven by a sense of rock’n’roll that is to die for.

“Seasons” is produced by Norwegian film score composer and JAGA JAZZIST drummer Martin Horntveth, and  was recorded at the Studio Paradiso in Oslo by Marcus Forsgren (BROR FORSGREN, JAGA JAZZIST) with vocals recorded at All Ape by Martin Horntveth. It was mixed by Bergen-based musician and producer Matias Tellez (YOUNG DREAMS, GIRL IN RED) at Blanca Records & Studio.

With artwork by Steph Hope,  tracklisting on “Seasons” is as follows:

1. Lessons
2. Free Will
3. Spitfire
4. All is as it should be
5. Show Me What You Got
6. Fire & Water
7. Divine
8. When You Call

“Seasons” will be available in CD, Digital and a Limited Edition LP in transparent magenta vinyl formats, and can now be pre-ordered from:

Tolkien Inspired RUINTHRONE Unveil First Single ‘Earendil’

Italian fantasy power metallers RUINTHRONE will be releasing their new J.R.R. Tolkien-inspired album “The Unconscious Mind Of Arda” due out January 2023 via Rockshots Records to follow their debut album “Urban Ubris” and EP “Leaden Field”.

The album itself has been composed of stories inspired by Tolkien’s poems, his “Legendarium”. The band hopes the concepts they wrote can be “messengers” of reflection for their listeners, turning in a better awareness of their daily life.

“With this album, we think we reached our own identity. Back in the early years, we started with a classic German power metal style, but year by year we changed and matured musically, we wanted to add more emotional colours to our palette and we decided to paint the darkest side of the human mind. This is why we use 7-string guitars with 1/2 step-down tuning, extreme vocals, etc. For this new record we also focused on an alternative point of view of some stories written by Tolkien. We thought it would have been interesting to explore not only some interesting characters and heroes but also the mind of the main villains:: Morgoth, the Witch-king, and Gothmog. The main concept is to develop a poem with no need for heroes. It’s a world populated by humanized characters creating a correspondence with the listener’s life.” adds guitarist Nicolò de Maria.

Today, Ruinthrone reveal the first single “Earendil” accompanied by a music video. Earendil was one of the first songs the band tried to finish while producing this album. It has a lot of different sections and moods and is the most “catchy” song on the full-length.

“It’s not exactly a ballad, because the only acoustic parts are the verses and the piano & bass solo, but that 6/8 time makes the song flow easily even if you’re not a metalhead. Another important point is the vocals. Haedus used a lot of different tones and ranges in this song…he did an amazing job!” adds the band.

Earendil is about the tainted love story between the half-elf Earendil and the elf Elwing. Desperate for the death of his lover Earendil reminds with the melancholy of the feeling and the past life spent with Elwing. This song has the goal to show the listener how strong feelings like love keep on living even when hostile events and death divide us from our loved ones.

“Sometimes we regret what we did in the past, some missed opportunities, but nothing can defeat love, and so we keep on living our adventures, our paths bringing the light of the Silmaril with us with is a symbol of the power of love.” says guitarist Nicolò de Maria.

“The Unconscious Mind Of Arda” is mixed and mastered by Giuseppe Orlando (sound tech for Rhapsody of Fire) at the Outer Sound Studios.

Doom Metal Veterans WOLF COUNSEL Release Single + Video ‘Healer’, New Album Out Now

Another summer has passed and yet again its farewell present for many Europeans meant death, loss and misery. After seemingly endless heat waves, droughts, forest fires and alarming signs of water scarcity, the partially charred Edenic beauty of Southern Europe has been drowned in water, suffocated in mud and debris. It’s a price we pay but for what? For our obsessive adherence to economic systems that make our own gravestone spiral down into a scarred planet. “Humans are pretty shit as far as nature goes. We’ve taken this wonderful resource – that is the planet we live on – and just ruined it”, as Con Doyle, singer and writer of the Irish/Swiss/German classic doom metal band WOLF COUNSEL, puts it. And with the band’s latest video single Healer, which was filmed and edited in the rural areas of County Cork, Ireland, a ton of frustration, anger and fear has been sent through their mill of doom: “Healer is kind of a warning: If we don’t come back and listen to the planet, we’re gonna fuck it up even further. But the song also touches on the whole aspect of capitalism and commercialism, of losing the old ways of the healers. Their ability to create and heal was rooted deeply in extending nature into mankind instead of opposing the natural environment that they lived in, unlike we’re doing today. We either go back to treating the planet with care or the planet will treat us without, simple as that!”

So again, the season that we all used to love and yearn for has turned into nothing but a reoccurring, short-lived antediluvian period, a biblical extreme turned reality. But what can we do? Make use of the short break that lies ahead – the fall, winter and spring. Do the doom thing: Slow down and go out, wander through nature and take it in. Think about your own life, question your false needs while you’re out and bring the conclusions back home to your loved ones. Healer is a great soundtrack for you doing that!

About Wolf Counsel and Initivm

Wolf Counsel came into existence in 2014, when two veteran musicians merged their enthusiasm for monumentally slow, low-tuned music and great appreciation of ponderous bass lines into a new band. Primarily rooted in the style of late 70s and 80s prototype doom metal, their sound quickly developed a very unique and heavy signature, drawing in influences from everything that’s heavy and slow. The band members themselves name a few bands as their musical inspiration such as Solitude Aeturnus and Cathedral; fans of Count Raven and especially Warning should definitely risk an ear, too!

In 2020, one of the two founding members moved to Ireland, which led to a nouveau and close creative collaboration with the new Irish frontman Con Doyle. Wolf Counsel now lives on with the addition of new influences, a new voice and new inspiration to deliver more pure doom metal with an even heavier and more epic approach on Initivm than ever before.

As the album Initivm was written during the lockdown, fans are probably eager to see what was created behind closed doors. Live shows are definitely what everyone is waiting for – and Wolf Counsel promise to give a stripped down, true old school metal show. They don’t want any nonsense nor artificial images and no compromises. The band has played gigs all across Europe with bands like Procession (SE/CI), Epitaph (IT), The Order of Israfel (SE), Castle SF (US), Year of the Goat (SE), Obelyskkh (DE), Orange Goblin (UK), Dead Witches (UK), Iron Void (UK) and Ahab (DE) and will hopefully add new dates to their route very soon – because those songs just need to be heard live. They have the power to provide a mass catharsis for everyone attending.

Initivm by Wolf Counsel is released today on September 30th, 2022.

Tracklist:

01. Healer
02. Torchbearer
03. Ruins
04. Aeons
05. The Old Ways
06. Initivm
07. Raven Dawn
