THE LOVECRAFT SEXTET Reveal Video for ‘Domine’

Collaborating with visual artist Chariot Of Black Moth, THE LOVECRAFT SEXTET present a video for a third song from their forthcoming album. ‘Miserere [Opus II]-Domine‘ portrays a cacophony of deep, bleak and contemplative soundscapes oscillating between Darkjazz, Black Metal, ambient and noise elements. In combination with the diverse, yet constantly fearsome and grim vocal performance, ‘Domine’ evolves into one of the most abyssal tracks on “Miserere“.

Composer Jason Köhnen comments on the song and the collaboration with Chariot Of Black Moth:

“The term ‘Domine‘ in the song title, meaning master or Lord, refers to the personal submission which in most cases was part of religious doctrine. I knew of the artistic work of Chariot Of Black Moth and found it an incredible honor that he offered to make a clip, as I can expect he is a busy man. I find his work on this song amazing, it really accentuates the atmosphere. So, this was a very pleasant surprise!“

“Miserere” will be released on CD, vinyl and digitally via Debemur Morti Productions on October 7th. Pre-orders for the album including merch are possible via the label’s EU, US and Bandcamp stores.

THE LOVECRAFT SEXTET is one of the many projects from multi-instrumentalist Jason Köhnen. Renowned for his previous projects BONG-RA or THE KILIMANJARO DARKJAZZ ENSEMBLE and THE MOUNT FUJI DOOMJAZZ CORPORATION.

Köhnen coined the term “Darkjazz” back in 1999 when he composed a track entitled ‘Darkjazz‘ for his 2001 “Darkbreaks” EP. From that point embarking on a long musical journey into dark experimentations with the jazz sound palette in combination with a plethora of genres.

THE LOVECRAFT SEXTET was evoked after a void appeared with the ending of his other Darkjazz outlets, firstly TKDE and TMFDJC and then the short lived THE THING WITH FIVE EYES project which saw Köhnen‘s first flirtations with Arabic scales and instruments, progressively transforming into his MANSUR project together with ex-PHURPA member Dmitry El Demerdashi and avantgarde metal THY CATAFALQUE vocalist Martina Hórvath.

Köhnen‘s approach to his releases with THE LOVECRAFT SEXTET are to open the spectrum of Darkjazz in all its wonderful and mysterious facets. Seeing each release as a script and soundtrack to a different movie, setting a different pace and atmosphere and playing with unorthodox climaxes and atmospheres. The projects hosts a list of dedicated guest musicians, who all participate as the leading actors in these scripts, all playing a crucial role in the soundtracks of these non-existing movies.

THE LOVECRAFT SEXTET releases albums on Denovali Records and Debemur Morti Productions, in a way where the Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde part of this project comes to its best and most creative fruition.

Apart from the conceptual audio releases, THE LOVECRAFT SEXTET also navigates through the multi-disciplinary arts. The “In Memoriam” release saw a first in a series of short stories and audiobooks combined with an album. Future releases will see more art disciplines combined as a release.

THE SCUM Release ‘The Death of Light’ Video

Colombian death Metal distributors THE SCUM release a new video for “The Death of Light” from their recently released album “The Hunger”. The video recently premiered via Ghost Cult Magazine which can be found here.

“The Death of Light” is the second video in the 9 years of career of THE SCUM. The first video of the song, “Dead Eyes” won the award for best Colombian metal video 0f 2021 in the second cinema and metal  Festival   made by Ficime in Colombia. That video was directed by Juan Diego Escobar the most important Colombian horror director of the moment in Colombia. The video was a kind of short horror film when the band appeared disguised as rednecks.

The death of light is something completely different. The idea was to make a more old school metal video with the band playing the track in a classic metal way and atmosphere. The idea was to keep some elements of the horror ambient and environment but given more relevance to the band performance of the song and more importance to the lights positions and colors and introducing some minor visual effects to create a good old fashioned metal video similar to the classic thrash and death metal videos of the 80es and early 90ties. The video was directed by Los Hermanos Jimenez of SHARPBALL productions directors of several videos for important Rock and metal sudamerican artists and Mateo Garcia bassist of THE SCUM and runner of PIKE Productions.
The song “The death of light” is part of the second album of THE SCUM “The Hunger” that was released few months ago via the European label Satanath records and the Colombian record label Wild Noise Productions.

The Scum was created in 2013 in Manizales, city of the Eje Cafetero, cradle of extreme metal in Colombia. Their material has been released by the most important record labels in Colombia: Brutalized Records and Hatewoks, played shows in cities around their country and Ecuador and in some of the most important metal festivals in their region. The band was elected as openers for prominent acts as Destruction, Tim Ripper Owens, The Haunted, Pungent Stench. Their material has been mixed and mastered by important musical producers in the international metal scene as Tomas Sogsberg and Andy Classen and their only professional video was directed by the most important horror director in Colombia Juan Diego Escobar. From the beginning THE SCUM has been strongly influenced by the horror genre in films and literature and the sounds of old school death metal. They have released an EP in 2015 called “Self-Destructive Race”, a debut album entitled “Ashen” in 2018 that was mixed by Tomas Skogsberg in Sunlight studios and an EP also mixed by Tomas Skogsberg and mastered at Stage One studio by Andy Classen named “Dead Eyes” (2020). Guest vocal was by Dave Ingram (Benediction). A video was made for the title track of the EP “Dead Eyes” directed by Colombian most important horror director Juan Diego Escobar. New album “The Hunger” mixed again in Sunlight Studios.

“THE HUNGER” NEW ALBUM

Frenetic music for those about Death Metal, raw and traditional. The Scum is the perfect combination of Old School extreme music and horror thematic. Coming from the cloudy mountains of Manizales, Colombia, The Scum is preparing a new album that will blow your brain out. Savage riffs, nasty growls and machine gun drum fills makes “The Hunger” a record you must have in your collection. If you enjoy bands like Entombed, Benediction, Unleashed, Napalm Death, Sinister, for sure “The Hunger” is a record you must have in your collection. Recorded and mixed at Bad Home Studio Manizales (Colombia). Mastered in Unisound Studios (Sweden) by legendary producer Dan Swanö. All music by Santiago De Los Ríos, Mauricio Aristizabal, Jose Fernando Ospina. All lyrics by Jose Fernando Ospina. All guitar solos were recorded by Julian Gil Monroy. Cover art by Yan Sek. Layout and booklet by Ana Caballero.

70s rock outfit UMBILICUS have released their fourth and final single, “Umbilicus”, from their upcoming album “Path Of 1000 Suns”, which is due September 30th via Listenable Insanity Records.  The new single showcases the band’s classic hard rock tendencies, as well as vocalist Brian Stephenson’s impressive vocal range.

“The story behind “Umbilicus” is pretty hilarious.  When Paul, Vern, and I were jamming and writing at the Cannibal spot, we noticed this tiny little plant growing from the ceiling. Weeks went by and it got longer and longer and eventually it reached the floor.  So we wrote a new tune at the time and it was dubbed Umbilicus, named after the plant, also because I had read the word when I was reading “It” by Stephen King and it may have been in one of the Alien movies as well…  It eventually became the band name, too! You can hear a lyric in there about “..from a ceiling in Florida”.  It’s a pretty fun song, musically and lyrically.” Nordberg said, explaining the story behind the Umbilicus name.

Stream the single HERE.

“Path Of 1000 Suns” is the band’s first album and features 10 original compositions.  Mixing and mastering for the album, as well as the album’s artwork was handled by guitarist Taylor Nordberg at Smoke & Mirrors Productions.

Legendary, heavy metal band STRYPER released their latest single “Transgressor” today September 15th off their forthcoming album The Final Battle that is set for release on October 21st, 2022.  “Transgressor” follows the successful release of first single “Rise To The Call,” and second single “See No Evil, Hear No Evil” both of which have received praise from press and fans alike in the buildup of the groups forthcoming album. This new album was produced by front man Michael Sweet, and firmly continues the trend established over the band’s last few albums, even somehow managing to beat its immediate predecessors, No More Hell To Pay (2013), Fallen (2015), God Damn Evil (2018), and Even The Devil Believes (2020), continuing the band’s unprecedented latest career streak of releasing arguably the best albums of their multi-decade career. The Final Battle sees the band growing heavier while also maintaining their trademark melodies, virtuoso guitar playing, and air tight rhythms. Fans can pre-order The Final Battle  HERE.  The Final Battle will be released on CD, 2xLP, and Digital formats, with multiple limited edition color variants of the LP available, along with exclusive merch drops on both Stryper’s and The Frontier’s websites.

The Final Battle was crafted during the most challenging time of the band’s career. But rather than let the adversity get them down, the band accepted these challenges and channeled it into writing some of the greatest songs of their storied career. One of those great songs is the band’s latest single “Transgressor” off of The Final Battle. When asked about this new single Stryper front man Michael Sweet said, “Transgressor is a ride like no other. You take off at 100 MPH and it doesn’t let up until the very last note. It’s definitely one of our heaviest songs yet we wanted to incorporate melody and structure. We’re really excited about this one and we can’t wait to perform it live!”

When it comes to groundbreaking bands in the metal genre, Stryper is renowned for their distinctive brand of “heavenly metal,” extraordinary crossover success, and venerable endurance. The group ascended to prominence in the 1980s with Billboard Top 40 hits like “Calling on You,” “Honestly,” and “Always There for You” and has maintained a global fan base since. Stryper’s career album sales exceed 10 million worldwide, including 1986’s multi-platinum release To Hell with the Devil. The band also made history when it notched two songs simultaneously on MTV’s Top 10 with videos “Free” and “Honestly.” While Stryper is known for their Christian faith, their decades plus career in heavy metal has made them much more than just a ‘Christian metal’ band. Sure, that is part of who they are, but at the end of the day, they are simply a long-running and well respected heavy metal band with a late-career rebirth that has proved their enduring talent and musical skills are well intact.

Today, some 37+ years after emerging from the southern California nightclub scene, Stryper continues to record, tour and perform for loyal fans around the globe. With three original members including brothers Michael Sweet (lead vocals, guitar) and Robert Sweet (drums), Oz Fox (guitar) and newest bandmate, seasoned bassist Perry Richardson (formerly of Firehouse), the group finds itself creating their finest, most powerful music yet. Stay tuned to Stryper’s socials below for updates on the release of more singles in the buildup to the release of The Final Battle as well as upcoming tour dates from the legendary metal group.

P.O.D. Release New Video for Title Track of Upcoming Album “When Angels and Serpents Dance”

P.O.D. and Mascot Records / Mascot Label Group have released the official music video for the title track of the October 14 remixed and remastered album WHEN ANGELS & SERPENTS DANCE. The original video animated and by artist and band friend Evil Little Clown has been edited to feature the new audio. To screen, click here: https://youtu.be/QtVwgNrGp_M. Prior, the music video for “Tell Me Why” was recently presented with sub-titles in English, Spanish, Russian, and Ukrainian (https://youtu.be/5hWPNmIhDlQ).  The first reveal was the official video for “Addicted,” which can be screened here: https://youtu.be/rdiwSAub_OA.

As history repeats itself, the significance of certain statements strengthens over time. Back in 2008, P.O.D. first presented their seventh full-length LP, When Angels & Serpents Dance, upon an unsuspecting world. It immediately reacted with audiences, bowing at #9 on the Billboard Top 200 as their fourth consecutive Top 10 debut on the respective chart. However, its themes, observations, and messages only resonate louder in 2022. The multi-GRAMMY® Award-nominated multiplatinum genre-busting San Diego band reupped, remixed, and remastered the original thirteen songs, adding another three tracks from the vault to complete the vision.
Now, the quartet—Sonny Sandoval [vocals], Marcos Curiel [guitar], Traa Daniels [bass], and Wuv Bernardo [drums]—re-release When Angels & Serpents Dance at just the right moment via Mascot.

“It was a new chapter,” observes Sonny. “A lot of personal things happened during the record, so it ended up being lyrically heavier and darker. I see P.O.D. albums as chapters from beginning to end. From our previous releases to the next album, we’ll put out in 2023, each one is a timeline of where we’re at, what we’re going through, and who we are.”

“In terms of the music, we were flirting with a lot of different elements at the time,” recalls Marcos. “Now, I’m stoked it’s actually going to be available again. It’s a record I think people need to hear. What Sonny is singing about seems like it’s more relevant today—maybe even more so than it was back then.”

The record not only proved important for a myriad of creative reasons, but also for a big personal reason as well. After a three-year hiatus from P.O.D., Marcos returned to the fold. He rejoined the guys for a special New Year’s Eve performance on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! before kicking off 2007 with a renewed sense of collective purpose together.  “It was special, because Marcos had come back,” Sonny goes on. “When he rejoined, we were free to be us. We really enjoyed making the record as this united brotherhood again.”

During 2021, P.O.D. plotted a reintroduction of When Angels & Serpents Dance following years unavailable on streaming platforms. The boys reteamed with original producer Jay Baumgardner [Godsmack, Bush, Seether] for remixing.  Howie Weinberg remastered the album.

P.O.D. rose out of a tough upbringing in San Diego and reached stratospheric heights. To date, they’ve earned three GRAMMY® Award nominations, moved 10 million-plus records, tallied over 1 billion streams, collaborated with artists as diverse as Rock and Roll Hall of Fame® inductee Carlos Santana and Katy Perry, endured nearly three decades together, and captivated the hearts of countless fans.

When Angels & Serpents Dance stands out as yet another milestone.  “This was a painting in time,” Marcos leaves off. “I hope you see all of the different shades, colors, and vibrations. I’m just glad everyone can hear it again.”

“Music has always been our outlet,” Sonny concludes. “We realized, ‘I don’t have to die on my street or sell drugs’. Coming from our neighborhood and upbringing, music saved us. We’ve seen this game change so much. I’ll always stay in this band, because our music continues to speak to all ages. I hope it continues until we decide to lay it down. Until then, there’s a lot more to do.”

Dark neo-folk collective VÉVAKI will be releasing its sophomore full-length, ‘Fórnspeki,’ on October 28, 2022 via Season of Mist, making it the band’s debut to the label! The nordic folk newcomers are now sharing the stunning music video for their brand new single, “Heimdalagaldr.” The video was created by Dániel Puskás (Valhallartworks) and can be found at THIS LOCATION.

Originally a solo project by singer and multi-instrumentalist Will Hunter, VÉVAKI is a folk band which draws from Nordic heathenism and animistic traditions. Myth, ritual and a connection with the natural world inform VÉVAKI’s music, which is both contemporary in sound and wide-ranging in instrumentation.

VÉVAKI comments on the release: “‘Heimdalagaldr’ is our nod to the lost Eddic poem of the same name, of which we only have two surviving lines.. ‘Níu em ek mæðra mavgr, níu em ek systra sonur. I am born of nine mothers, I am the son of nine sisters.'”

The record is now available for pre-ordering in the Season of Mist store HERE and can be pre-saved across streaming services HERE.

The cover art was created by Živa Ivadóttir.

4. Jötnablót [WATCH]

Debut album ‘Edda’ came in 2020 when VÉVAKI was still a solo project, although Sigurboði Grétarsson and Florian Baudrain made contributions. Taking a collection of Old Norse poetry – the Poetic Edda – as its source material, ‘Edda’ breaths new life into these stories through its musical journey, at once beautiful and hypnotically heady.

VÉVAKI’s second album, ‘Fórnspeki’, finds the band expanding upon their sound while staying true to their folk roots and traditions.  Sigurboði Grétarsson has joined VÉVAKI as a full-time member, as has Gísli Gunnarsson and Hrafnhildur Inga Guðjónsdóttir. The new material is, says Will, broader and more mature sounding.

“VÉVAKI is very much based in our modern heathen tradition,” Will notes. “Sigurboði and I had been playing music for a while and we have used music as part of our personal spiritual practise. We had worked on some songs together but they were very much personal. Then we had a jam session in this cave in Iceland and afterwards we tried to record a song. I asked if Sigurboði would feature on it and he said yes, thankfully. Then I went home and used my home recording equipment to do a song which we sent to Danheim (Danish folk musician) and he put me on his online record label. And that’s how VÉVAKI started. We did a full album from there. Sigurboði featured heavily on it, even though he wasn’t in the band in any official capacity. But he did lots of drums and vocals and stuff like that.”

VÉVAKI employ various stringed instruments and percussion throughout their music, its dynamics buoyed by the complementary vocal styles of Will, Sigurboði and Hrafnhildur and the cinematic soundscapes sculpted by Gísli Gunnarsson. This comes to the fore on ‘Fórnspeki’.

“We decided to go a bit bigger,” says Will. “We started working on the second album and we brought in Gísli, and the sound has changed quite a bit, I think. It’s much more mature now. In my opinion, Gísli is the glue that holds us together. He comes from a modern classical background. And Hrafnhildur was an obvious choice, to add an important female dynamic. Her voice has a healing quality to it, I think, and that’s a big thing with the new album.”

Ritual and spiritual practises provide a structure to ‘Fórnspeki’.
“Our practice is very animistic,” says Will. “But you don’t have to be a super spiritual person to feel some sort of connection to nature. And we just hope that whoever is listening finds that our music brings some sort of connection for them.

Sigurboði adds, “‘Fórnspeki’ was composed around this concept of the ritual and of the performance. There will be a performance and ritual on stage, because that’s how the songs are imagined. And some of the songs came from rituals that we’ve done or have spawned from the rituals. For example, the song ‘Dísablót’ is based around a ritual that we would do. It’s got lots of chants in there that we would do and we hope that other people might be inspired. On this new album we have a lot of original lyrics. But it’s both based in the myth and the practice. It’s not all about the gods but also about the worship and the ritual.”

VÉVAKI is a fluid and resourceful project, employing traditional and contemporary instrumentation of various origins.

“We’re not going for historical accuracy,” points out Sigurboði. “We’re not married to the idea that it has to be a Nordic instrument. We’re not Vikings. We’re not the Shamans, or the Priests. We are the practitioners, the regular folk making the offerings.”

Adds Will, “We are trying to step away from that whole Viking thing. There are modern songs for modern beliefs. We put a lot of emphasis on that.”
