FOLKRIM Release New Single + Music Video ‘Midsummer Mead’

Finnish folk metallers FOLKRIM are set to release their second studio album On Foaming Waves on October 21st 2022 via Inverse Records. The third and last single Midsummer Mead is released today with a music video which can be seen below.

The band comments:
“Juhannus is the most important celebration for a Finn, where the immortal midsummer sun shines throughout the entire birch, beer and lake -filled night. The finnish summer is beautiful but short, so it’s best to enjoy as much as you can while it lasts. Midsummer Mead is built upon these themes as an ode for living in the moment, while representing the heavier musical side of the album. To go with the song, we gathered old clips from behind the scenes of the band and crammed them together for a drunken party of a music video. The summer might be already over and the cold winter is knocking on the door, but midsummer will live eternal in the heart of a Finn. So let our horns of gold overflow!”

Folkrim is a five man band from Rauma, the grim western coast of Finland. To keep the long winters at bay, inspired by beer and nature, we wound up combining metal music with traditional instruments. Originally a one-man project, Folkrim grew fast into a full band and we released ‘Tales of Tumult’, our self published album in the spring of 2021. A year later we’ve joined forces with Inverse Records and our second album, ‘On Foaming Waves’ is awaiting it’s release in the fall of 2022.

Line-up:

Erno Helander – Vocals/orchestral production/ukulele/banjo/mandolin
Iiro Sarman – Electric guitars
Otto Hyvärinen – Acoustic guitars
Viktor Suominen – Bass guitar
Eetu Ritakorpi – Drums/backup vocals

LYBICA ARE:

Chris Lane – Drums

Lybica‘s origin story can be traced back to 2020 when it became clear to Justin Foley that he wasn’t going to be spending much time with his normal bandmates for a while. Quarantine days still needed to be time well spent, and he’d been working on some demos that he finally decided to share with a few local friends in South Florida. “I’d written a bunch of stuff that didn’t quite fit into traditional song structures,” Foley says. “And I’ve always been drawn to bands where the instruments provide hooks, rather than relying on a lyric. It seemed like a good time to start something new and see where it could go.“

Foley met fellow musicians Doug French (Gravel Kings) and Joey Johnson (Gravel Kings, Barriers Now Bridges, Days Spent) back in 2016, and they had repeatedly talked about jamming together but never actually got around to it. Foley and French – both drummers by trade – often spoke about trying something different that allowed them each to get out from behind the kit. “I’ve always wanted to play a stringed instrument,” French shares. “And bass felt natural, since it is the other half of the rhythm section.“

Johnson grew up playing shows all over Florida, heavily influenced by early punk and then both hardcore and metal. “[People at] all the good places to get a beer kept asking me if I had met Justin, since they know I play music,” he recalls. “I heard about him in our town for about a year before we actually met through mutual friends. We hit it off when we started talking [about] instrumental music.“

When French and Johnson eventually received the demos from Foley, they really liked what they heard. For several months, the three of them emailed music back and forth while learning the parts, especially Foley and French on instruments – guitar and bass, respectively – that they weren’t experienced playing. They eventually started playing together with the drum tracks from the demos blasting through the PA speakers. Before too long, they had enough music for a full record and the direction of the band was taking shape.

The band eventually recruited Orlando drummer Chris Lane of A Brilliant Lie to fill its “drummer vacancy.” Lane, who was born and raised in Chicago and is currently based in Orlando, joined the band in December 2021.

The founding trio soon discovered that they had something else in common besides music. “The three of us are pretty big cat people,” Foley points out. “So it only made sense to call the band Lybica.” Named after a small wildcat species native to Africa that is widely considered the godfather of the modern house cat, Lybica is the first known feline species to be tamed and domesticated by humans. Fast forward 10,000 years, and today, Lybica the band are as addictive as catnip. Lybica are poised to make some serious noise in 2022 – fur-real.

NECRONOMICON are currently busy recording their 11th, yet untitled studio album, just recently Freddy, the band’s frontman and vocalist, issued the following update:

“Rhythm guitars are now recorded and last Friday we started with the drum recording before we’ll prepare for our European tour. The cover artwork is also in progress and will be finished by the end of September, as will the album. Glen will join us next week so we will be all together then. Can‘t wait to be on stage with the guys again.”

The album is produced by Necronomicon and the mixing + mastering will be handled by Achim Köhler.

Earlier Freddy revealed:
“The album includes 13 songs full of power and hardness. A wide spectrum from typical thrash metal versions over punk-heavy versions to driving midtempo songs. As the world is becoming to resemble the H.P. Lovecraft’s Necronomicon (Book of Dead) we have decided to deal with the current situation in Ukraine and in general with the topic of war and violence against children and women. Musically I would like to tie in with “The Final Chapter” and deliver a wide range of song material which also means a new beginning, a new chapter of the band with Rik and Glen at the same time. Stay tuned!”

More details TBA!

IRIST Unleash “Gloria” EP, European Tour with PALLBEARER & ELDER Kicks Off

IRIST, the Atlanta-by-way-of-South America band that Revolver said “exist within the same sonic hemisphere as earth-rumbling groups like GOJIRA and MASTODON,” have released the five-song Gloria EP (listen here: https://bfan.link/Irist-Gloria) today via Nuclear Blast Records.

“Gloria is incredibly deep and personal,” says vocalist Rodrigo Carvalho. “Every aspect of its music reflects that. It describes the multitude of emotions we are all destined to face as soon as we accept the risk of loving wholeheartedly. It is a journey from separation to deliverance.”

Guitar player Pablo Davila explains the origins of the EP:
“I started working on this EP about a month after we got back from recording OOTM back in 2019 so after we finished writing it, the songs sat for quite some time – mostly due to the pandemic. But all of the downtime meant that we had an opportunity to experiment extensively with production, and I was particularly adamant about beginning to introduce synthesizers to our sound. I’d been thinking about synthesizer-based textures for a while, but didn’t want to force them into every single song or get carried away with the novelty of these new tools. I’m really pleased with how they’re present on the EP and the emotion they can help convey. There was a lot of intensity and a myriad of feelings that went into these songs and I hope that listeners will be able to connect with that energy and take something away from it.”

Gloria, which finds the band reunited with mixer Matt Bayles (MASTODON/ISIS), has already received widespread praise. BBC Radio 1 Rock Show’s Daniel P. Carter debuted the title track earlier this week, MetalSucks said the 5-song offering is “complete with fat rhythms, otherworldly guitar melodies and chugging riffs,” and Metal Injection noted “if you like BURST and CULT OF LUNA, you’ll dig this.”

IRIST play a pair of hometown shows this weekend, with a performance tonight at Atlanta’s Drunken Unicorn, and a show tomorrow at Flicker in Athens. The band head overseas next week, joining ELDER and PALLBEARER for a six-week trek across the continent.
