Prosthetic Records are thrilled to announce the signing of multinational cybergrind band THOTCRIME. Composed of members hailing from Champaign-Urbana, IL, Philadelphia, PA and Nottingham, UK, THOTCRIME will be releasing their second album, D1G1T4L_DR1FT via the Los Angeles label on October 28. Lead single, Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria, is streaming now along with an accompanying music video.

Stream Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria via Apple Music, TIDAL, Deezer, Bandcamp and Spotify
Pre-order D1G1T4L_DRIFT here.

Speaking on the album announcement, K. Salmon (producer) comments: “The new album represents us moving into new territories musically. Over the last few split releases we’ve been exploring the world of heavy guitar music and electronic music a lot further outside the field of the sounds on our debut album. We really feel that this album brings together all those new sounds in a powerful and cohesive way.”

Of the lead single, Malady Jane (guitar) adds: “Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria shows the sort of approach we’ve taken with our new album, drawing from our loves of both heavy guitar-oriented music and more electronic pop and dance styles. Lyrically, the song deals with the way that neurodivergence and mental illness can make you feel the world is out to get you.”

THOTCRIME’s prolific output to date has seen the band generate a buzz in online music communities and garner praise from Bandcamp Daily in the publication’s profile on the burgeoning cybergrind movement at large. D1G1T14L_DR1FT, the follow up to 2020s ønyøurcømputer, sees THOTCRIME continue to gleefully abandon genre convention in favour of boundless individuality and invention. Of the 13 tracks, THOTCRIME boast features from Carson Pace of The Callous Daoboys, Katie Davies of Pupil Slicer, Aki McCullough of Dreamwell and diana starshine.

Self-produced by the band before being mixed and mastered by the group’s very own K. Salmon, the usual pitfalls and tribulations of getting a group of people into a room to write and record an album do not apply here. THOTCRIME’s approach to crafting D1G1T4L_DR1FT is an embrace of technological advances and DIY collaboration via Discord servers, instant messengers and online community – with collaboration already playing a large part in THOTCRIME’s growing discography thanks to remix releases of their debut album in its entirety and their 2021 Remixes effort. D1G1T4L_DR1FT is tied together aesthetically in arresting fashion thanks to digital artist Yam Lynn.

On their second long player THOTCRIME continue to shun all that is conventional whilst cohesively blending together disparate influences from 100 Gecs to The Locust, D1G1T4L_DR1FT finds the international act steadfastly embracing exultation and conquering all that stands in their way. Stop the doomscrolling, THOTCRIME are the perfect antidote.

SAHG Unleash New Song & Music Video ‘Fall Into The Fire’ from Upcoming Album

Norwegian heavy metal trio, SAHG, who is currently gearing up for the release of their sixth studio album, has shared a new single alongside a video. The band’s forthcoming record, entitled Born Demon will be out on October 21, 2022 via Drakkar Entertainment!

“Fall Into the Fire is one of the tracks that really states what the new album is about. This is heavy metal in its purest form.” Guitarist & vocalist Olav Iversen comments.“After Sahg became a three-piece, we started focusing on writing simpler songs. We wanted to go back to the core and rediscover the essence of our heavy metal origin. On the previous couple of albums, we had written more complex and progressive material, but we’d had enough of that. I remember thinking, «How can we make a Sahg song that hits the headbanger in people in the simplest way?» This is what came out. The simple opening riff is the backbone of Fall Into the Fire. The chorus was taken from a song we had written some time before, that was otherwise heading in the wrong direction. But the unpretentious catchiness of the chorus fit perfectly with the new riff.

The vocal line came instinctively along with the riff, and is equally instant and to the point. The first words that rolled off my tongue when we jammed the song, were «You scored the Devil’s daughter», which led me on to writing a lyric about someone who hooks up with a charming young lady out on the town one night. One thing leads to another, and after waking up the next day you realize you have spent the night with the actual Devil’s daughter. Pretty bad news, of course, because you have given the Devil and his daughter exactly what they were after – the perfect occasion to drag you to hell and torture you in the most horrible ways, for all eternity. Turn it down from eleven to seven, and I’m sure many can relate. It’s a song about getting into trouble, basically. The kind you can’t get out of.”

Just exclusively premiered with Metal Injection and Rock Hard Magazine, you can now watch the clip for the blistering, new single “Fall Into The Fire” here:

Entering the Norwegian metal scene in 2006 as a classic doom band, wasn’t necessarily a recipe for success. Black metal was still the big thing coming from Norway, and there wasn’t much space for bands from other subgenres. Even with Gorgoroth members King ov Hell and Kvitrafn in the line-up, adding a touch of blackness, it wasn’t very likely that Sahg would get an instant break-through. But, the band took the heavy music scene by storm with their blistering, chart-breaking debut Sahg I.

Throughout the following decade, Sahg released five critically acclaimed albums, and played several tours and festivals across Europe, the United States and Asia to date. They have toured as support act for bands like Motörhead, W.A.S.P., Opeth, Clutch, Satyricon,  Dimmu Borgir and Enslaved to name just a few, and appeared at prestigous  festivals such as Wacken Open Air, Summerbreeze, Sweden Rock Festival, Hard Rock Hell, Tons of Rock, Inferno Festival and Beyond the Gates among many more. To this day, Sahg has always stayed trve to their doom and heavy metal roots, and still holds the throne as Norway’s high guardians of doomed heavy metal. They are the bastard sons of Black Sabbath, Motörhead, Pentagram and Judas Priest. Classic heavy metal for the new age, with a desire for the occult, aversion for religion, and a gloomy gaze into the inevitable apocalypse, all served with a cold bite of Norwegian Blackness. With the ruthless force of a classic power trio and their upcoming album Born Demon under their belt, Sahg is part of a renaissance that will bring vintage doom and classic heavy metal back to the masses!

Pre-Order Born Demon, coming out on October 21, 2022 via Drakkar Entertainment, HERE!

Born Demon track listing:

  1. Fall Into The Fire
  2. House Of Worship
  3. Born Demon

  5. Black Cross On The Moon
  6. Evil Immortal
  7. Salvation Damnation

BLIND GUARDIAN Singer Hansi Kürsch Says Their New Album is Angry, Intense & Aggressive

Jimmy Kay and Alan Dixon from The Metal Voice recently spoke to lead singer of Blind Guardian Hansi Kürsch about the bands upcoming studio album ‘The God Machine’ , which will be released on Sept 2, 2022 via Nuclear Blast.

Tell us about the cover art on the new album by Peter Mohrbacher
“We were just simply blown away when we saw the artwork. It was very suitable for the music. We needed something connected to mythology, philosophy, religion and also computer games and it is all planted into that artwork, the artist is a genius and we feel it would be the next step. We didn’t feel it was so far away from what we usually do, maybe a little more intense and other than that we were so convinced it would fit the purpose. This angel is organic but still it also has an artificial approach and this is what we are also dealing with in the lyrics. There are a lot of deities and future stuff.”

Tell us about a few of the lyrical themes on the album
“The song ‘Architects of Doom’ is about the cycle of violence. The lyrics were related to the new series (latest Battlestar Galactica series) because of the intensity that the series had. The song ‘Destiny’ is related to Hans Christian Andersen (writer) and the Ice Maiden (novel). It is an obsessive song, a fragile song but still threatening somehow. The Ice Maiden is about obsession. I wanted to have a sort of love story and Hans Christian Andersen is the best storyteller. He just is so great at inventing stories and there is always that deeper sense that goes along with it. It’s about the cold obsession of love. The results are just fatal at least for one party. The song ‘Let it be no more’ was a long process in creating this one we worked on it at the end of 2018 to 2019. It was when my mother passed away and that had an impact on the vocals and on the melody lines, especially in the verses. It’s about loss in general and what loss means to those who are left behind and those who depart and that was also related to the TV series, ‘The Leftovers’ which gave it an additional depth.”

Tell us about the musical direction of this album compared to the last ones
” The intensity is extremely high, more of the let your hair down then the bombastic side even though there are some bombastic moments. It would say it is the back to the roots album because there are a lot of new elements in there but it has the intensity in what we did in the 90’s. If we speak about aggression maybe it’s our most aggressive one (album) and the only other albums that come close to it are ‘Imaginations from the other side’ and ‘Follow the blind’. I think the two years (lockdown) that we all had, had an impact on the album. We started the production when the pandemic really started and that had an impact on the lyrics, performance and the music. We were all frustrated and we wanted to let the anger just go, let loose. It’s an angry album. This album is complete, for us once the album is complete it is the best album, there is no doubt about it and sometimes he have been proven wrong because the fans did not feel the same way. With this one it is so complete, it’s so defined that I would think that most of the Blind Guardian fans will fall in love with it. We also had a good amount of songs which we did not finally put on the album and we did not even work on during the production because we found our way with the songs which are on the album and we never left that path.”

When asked if the band went far enough with Orchestrations and now it’s time to go back to basics?
“Everyone in the band has a slightly different perspective. For me there was a necessity to just let go, After we finished ‘the Legacy of the Dark lands’ album’ I did not feel the urge to back back there again. It was time for a new starting point, for a new era. For me it felt like going home (new Album) or getting home, with distorted guitars and having a band accompany me. I also felt like if there was something bad about the ‘Legacy of the Dark Lands’ or ‘Beyond the Red mirror’ , it was that the band does not shine enough, there is so much going on, there is so much information and this takes away attention from the band members. For me from the beginning I wanted to make an album that just features the band. When we discussed it everyone in the band was on the same page even though I believe that André Olbrich would like to do another orchestrated album, for me that is not what I want to do within the next 5 years.”

The cover artwork for the CD was designed by Peter Mohrbacher and can be seen below.

Tracklist:
1. Deliver Us from Evil 5:21
2. Damnation 5:20
3. Secrets of the American Gods 7:28

6. Architects of Doom 6:20
7. Let It Be No More 4:48
8. Blood of the Elves 4:37

MY SLEEPING KARMA Celebrate “Atma” Album Release with Stunning Music Video ‘Avatara’

Closing a seven-year gap since their latest studio album, Moksha, today, heavy hypnotic rock act MY SLEEPING KARMA celebrates their brand new album, entitled Atma, which is out now on Napalm Records.

From the album’s first tone, it’s immediately evident that Atma isn’t just another new MY SLEEPING KARMA record – it’s an infinite darkness, despair and sadness that furiously drives the German four-piece on studio album number six, marking the band’s darkest, most emotional and deep record to date.

In celebration of today’s release, MY SLEEPING KARMA have shared a new music video for the otherworldly single ‘Avatara’, which shines in synth post-rock grandeur that bridges majestic, exotic texture and mesmerizing dynamics!

Drummer Steffen states: “As many other sanskrit words Avatara has also several corresponding meanings. Avatara means the descent, the coming down, like the appearance itself. But it could also be used to describe an opportunity or the coming to light. In this sense Avatara is the perfect word to reveal our new album “Atma” and bring this finally to light.”

As many artists have experienced, the past two years hit the entire music and culture industry hard. But MY SLEEPING KARMA – they have truly faced the abyss. Formed almost 20 years ago as a strong bond of best friends with a steady line-up ever since, the band has amassed an incredibly successful back catalog of five highly acclaimed records and a live album in 2017, as well as extensive touring performances at sold-out venues and prestigious festivals that have marked them as one of the most well-respected instrumental post- and hypnotic rock bands within the heavy music community.

Atma describes the (absolute) self, the indestructible, eternal essence of the spirit, and is often translated as the “soul”. Sickness, death, and existential fear had brought the band to a point in music and life at which they were close to parting ways. But their will to survive has been recorded on Atma – a record the band wasn’t even sure would see the light of day when they started working on it back in 2017, and if it did, would’ve never been for industry sales, fame or success. Atma tells the story of their lives, processing the trauma of personal tragedies, deepest pain and fear of four best friends that have been going through their darkest days since their band existence.

Most of the six new album tracks near the 10-minute mark and excel in distinctive MY SLEEPING KARMA fashion – from crystal clear intros bursting into bittersweet melodies of vulnerable beauty to imposing soundspheres of mesmerizing heaviness with entrancing undercurrents. As Monster Magnet’s Dave Wyndorf once said, MY SLEEPING KARMA is ART – but their new, cathartic record not only captures the zeitgeist of the times, but leaves a little light for hope, love, beauty and strength amid all the ugly facets of our vulnerable lives.

“We´ve put a lot of time, effort and love into it and we are finally very happy it´s done.” The band says.“If you listen closely and open hearted, you might be able to hear and feel the sadness, the pain we´ve went throught. But more than ever there is also lots of hope, happiness and love.

This is one of the most important sentences the mental world repeats constantly since many years. “Every human being has always to choose between the two main emotions: Fear or Love.”  So everybody should choose carefully as this decision(s) defines who you are.

We really hope this album is able spread some positive vibes, a bit of hope and – most improtant – love! Because in the end love is everything exists.

Much Love
Norman, Seppi, Matte, Steffen”

Atma was produced, recorded and mixed by drummer Steffen at New Life Studios, and was mastered by Andreas Balaskas at Masterlab Studios in Berlin. The incredible album artwork has been created by Sebastian Jerke.

THE COMMONERS Announce New Album “Find A Better Way”, Release ‘Fill My Cup’ Single + Music Video

Posted by tarjavirmakari on July 31, 2022
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: THE COMMONERS. Leave a comment

Find A Better Way is the brand-new album by Canadian classic rock roots and blues rock band, The Commoners. The album is released on CD, limited edition vinyl and digital by Gypsy Soul Records on Friday 4th November and is available to pre-order from thecommoners.ca. The first single Fill My Cup was released on Friday 29th July and is available to stream HERE.

Possessing a sound tapped from the oaken belly of a whiskey barrel, The Commoners are a four-piece Roots/Blues Rock band from Toronto, Canada.

Described as “a classic rock and roll affair,” the nine songs take the listener on a sonic voyage through the lives of the band, from the dusty back roads of rural Ontario to the bright lights of the big city. Offering their own blend of rock and roll, southern blues, and roots music, the Toronto-based four-piece band are known for their high-energy riffs, soulful vocals, and rich harmonies. The result is an authentic Southern-style rock experience.

The group was cobbled together over the course of a decade, adapting through numerous obstacles to form the unit as it exists today: Chris Medhurst (vocals/guitar), Ben Spiller (bass), Ross Hayes Citrullo (lead guitar), and Adam Cannon (drums). Often joined by their friend, organist Miles Evans-Branagh, The Commoners unite under a shared dream: to write, perform, and share music that is an authentic nod to the greats who paved the way before them.

“The new album authentically embodies the rock and roll, soul, and blues rock experience,” says the band’s lead singer, Chris Medhurst. “That’s something we really wanted to bring back. That’s the roots. That’s what we listen to.”

The first single Fill My Cup is the quintessential roots rock song, featuring high-energy guitar riffs, a groovy verse and an uplifting chorus rounded out with an inspiring full band chant. Showcasing a powerful vocal performance by lead singer Chris Medhurst, and the soulful harmonies of Chantal Williams, Fill My Cup is an impeccable introduction to The Commoners—a must listen.

Stream and buy the single HERE. Watch the official Fill My Cup music video HERE.

The Black Crowes are a considerable influence for us,” says Medhurst. “Derek Trucks, Marcus King, Led Zeppelin, and The Allman Brothers Band, too. These are the bands that we wear on our sleeves as we aspire to create our own music and sound.”

Find A Better Way is an album that demands attention from the first note. The opening lines “If I scream at the top of my lungs, and stamp my feet, ’til the floor comes undone,” immediately inform that a wild ride lies ahead. The album was recorded and produced at RHC Music in Toronto by the band’s guitarist Ross Hayes Citrullo. Ross collaborated with executive producer Renan Yildizdogan to strike the perfect balance of new and old recording treatments. The goal was to create something that felt new and original, yet still familiar to their target classic roots rock and blues rock audience.

“The vision from the beginning was to marry old and new southern rock together in a way that was unique to the band’s Canadian roots,” explains Citrullo. “By adding the soul and rock elements of the Black Crowes, and the southern blues rock undertones of the Allman Brothers to a production style akin to Blackberry Smoke and Rival Sons, I think we developed an authentic sound that compares sonically to some of our favourite records across all of those music genres.”

The album’s lyrical themes drill into the essence of humanity: love, regret, ambition, and fear. Circling the forever challenge of doubt vs. desire, The Commoners place themselves into the shoes of the everyman. The result? Nine tracks that function as a comfort and companion through all of life’s trials and tribulations, with melodic solos, soaring organ, and a punchy rhythm section to drive the messages home.

Drummer Adam Cannon says, “Music, like so much in life, is about the exchange of energy,” and The Commoners make more than a fair trade. Striving to present an impactful, memorable, and downright exhilarating live experience that accurately represents their recorded works, the band carries the listener over spirited choruses and group chants, before returning them back to earth in need of a shot of something smooth. You can expect to leave fully satisfied, sweat drenched, and heart racing, a good time guaranteed—just what we all need.

The Commoners enlisted a handful of Toronto’s finest musicians to help bring their record to life. On the title track Find A Better Way, the band brought on keyboardist Jeff Heisholt (The Trews) to lay down an iconic organ track. For the rest of the album, keyboardist Miles Evans-Branagh performed organ, piano, and Rhodes.

To accompany Ben and Adam on backup vocals, The Commoners called upon three of Canada’s top backup singers. Tash Lorayne and Shezelle Weekes (The Arkells), and Chantal Williams joined in to arrange vocal parts and enliven the mix with their vivacious voices resulting in a spine-tingling performance.

The Commoners also invited local legend Michael Eckert to lend his pedal steel talents on I Won’t and Alive. Adding the final cherry on top, renowned multi-instrumentalist Ben Healey treated Deadlines to a guitar solo worthy of the world’s greatest stadiums. Though these songs were all written by The Commoners, the contributions of these amazing guest musicians make the album something special.

“Every time we brought an outside player into the studio, they would offer their own unique instincts and interpretations of each song. This helped the album grow into a collaborative art piece that continues to surprise us with every listen.”

A rock anthem to its core, the title track, Find A Better Way, carries a message that encapsulates the entirety of the record. With growing uncertainties, society faces challenges previously unseen, leaving the collective in a perpetual state of questioning, with doubt directed towards governments, public leaders, and our neighbours. From the aftermath of COVID-19, the increasing mental health crisis in North America, war crimes in Ukraine, and the explosion of social movements and protests, one thought unites us all—we need to find a better way to co-exist on this planet. Find A Better Way takes an inward look at confronting our tumultuous past and accepting personal accountabilities to uncover the strength needed to seek a solution.

Find a Better Way is the only track on the record to mixed outside of Canada. The band worked with legend Producer/Mixer Kevin Shirley (the Black Crowes, Joe Bonamassa, Led Zeppelin) at Caveman Studios in Sydney, Australia. Kevin’s mix helped set the perfect tone for the album, which Ross Hayes Citrullo was then able to follow for the rest of the record. Kevin’s involvement set The Commoners on the right path with this epic title track.

Mastering was also an important consideration for the band and their label. For this stage, the team sent their record all the way to Nashville, Tennessee to Pete Lyman (Tedeschi Trucks, Blackberry Smoke, Chris Stapleton, Rival Sons) at Infrasonic Sound. Pete’s specialty for mastering southern rock made the mixes come alive, making them sonically competitive to the band’s influences.

As a collective, we find ourselves emerging into a changed society, with uncertainty looming and shadowing the future. In their upcoming release, The Commoners remind us that music has a unique ability to heal, a medicine of extraordinary merit, and balm for the soul during dark times. Every major movement in history gave rise to change makers, and The Commoners are taking their stand, here to lead and inspire us all to Find a Better Way.

ALBUM TRACK BY TRACK

FIND A BETTER WAY
Two words. Rock Anthem. A rip-roaring intro launches the band into an epic, empowering song with a resonant message. The cry to confront our tumultuous past and accept personal accountabilities has never sounded better. Gang vocals urging “Don’t walk away from me,” and a biting guitar tone immediately grab the listener, refusing to let go until they heed the call to find a better way.

FILL MY CUP
A roots rock classic with introspective verses and a chorus that will promptly raise hairs, Fill My Cup is the album’s spirited first single. Made for sun-filled Saturday afternoons, high-energy riffs, and emotive vocals elevate this track to higher ground. Featuring the talented Chantal Williams on backup vocals, Fill My Cup strikes hard with a message that screams through the speakers. One listen and you’ll be saying, “How ‘bout another round?”

MORE THAN MISTAKES
The rock train rolls on full steam ahead with the punchy and rollicking More Than Mistakes. Bright tambourine accents a rhythm section to rival Motown, illuminating a track that will instantly push listeners to the edge of their seats, raising them to their feet. Alive and free, More Than Mistakes affirms the album’s theme of self-empowerment with gusto.

TOO MUCH
Erupting with the growling vigor of an old Beaumont, Too Much drives The Commoners to the brink of surrendering their dreams for the comforts of home. A high horsepower performance peels out with rowdy riffs and lively organ in tow, delivering a relatable sentiment that never proves to be too much.

NATURALLY
Swelling with vulnerability, and hard truths, Naturally confirms that honesty writes one hell of a song. A sparse intro pours into a symphony of voices, wrapping the listener like a pair of welcoming arms for a chorus that hits like an arrow through the heart. Miles Evans-Branagh lays the foundation from which this ballad blooms with an organ arrangement that sighs and stirs, echoing an emotive vocal performance by Chris Medhurst.

I WON’T
The twangy ring of guitars brings an element of country to I Won’t, featuring Toronto legend Michael Eckert on pedal steel. Lush harmonies abound, supporting a flourishing chorus drawing the listener into a mind plagued by second guessing and self-uncertainty. An unexpected bridge bends the ear, insisting you give a damn.

DEADLINES
Demanding attention from the first note, the force of Deadlines is undeniable. Enthusiastic performances from each member combine for the ultimate trifecta: an uplifting, feel-good summer chorus, psychedelic bridge, and groove that will have even the most reserved of listeners stirring up the dance floor like a swizzle stick. A searing guitar solo by Ben Healey keeps the energy sky high, reminding listeners this is, primarily, a rock and roll album.

HANGIN’ ON AGAIN
Worth every second of its 7:06 spin length, Hangin’ On Again is the magnum opus of the album. Telling a timeless tale of love and loss, the lead vocals dance the delicate line between tasteful and untamed with exquisite precision. The arrangement inflates from the onset with atmospheric guitar courtesy of Ross Hayes Citrullo, and organ before bursting into a fervent chorus highlighting The Commoners as masters of their craft.

ALIVE
Concluding the album, The Commoners extend a final invitation into their sacred heart space with Alive. Bassist Ben Spiller lends his prowess to the piano, aligning with Michael Eckert’s pedal steel for a mesmerizing outcome. Alive calls into question the value we assign to that which is important to us in life. How are we to weigh a dream against daily responsibilities, and conjure belief from a well that easily runs dry? An unforgettable ending to an incredible journey.
