Florida-based melodic death metal masters THE ABSENCE have unveiled a live action lyric  video for “This Consuming Nocturne”, the fourth preview track from the group’s new album “Coffinized,” which will be released in 2 days, June 25 via M-Theory Audio.

The video is now Live via the bands YouTube and can be viewed here:

Video credit: Lycan Sound Productions – https://facebook.com/lycansoundproductions

Vocalist, Jamie Stewart adds:

“With the lyric video for This Consuming Nocturne we went for a silent film visual, coupled with the song’s gloomy, yet triumphant atmosphere. The track itself, also serves in part as a sequel to the song Walking Shadows, released in 2019. Where Walking Shadows speaks of a dark, self-reflective realization, This Consuming Nocturne is about searching through the darkness itself, facing the lonely registers of night. It’s about finding your answers, waiting under the drape of twilight.”

Hailed by Decibel for “leaving the majority of melodic death metal’s recent history chewing dust,” “Coffinized” – which can be pre-ordered on CD and limited-edition colored vinyl at https://www.nightshiftmerch.com/collections/The-Absence – is THE ABSENCE’s follow-up to their acclaimed 2018 comeback record, “A Gift For The Obsessed.” That album was the band’s first in eight years, as well as their first for new label home M-Theory Audio. The time period between that album’s release and the COVID outbreak saw the band stay busy by taking their new songs to the road, touring alongside acts such as Deicide, Origin, Jungle Rot, Exmortus and Hatchet. The group’s members also stayed busy with outside endeavors, with drummer Jeramie Kling manning the kit for Venom Inc., bassist Mike Leon, a member with Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy and guitarist Taylor Nordberg playing with Massacre.

Those three band members took the experiences from their touring gigs and reconvened in the studio with Stewart – who has also been busy with his other project, Hot Graves – to put together the 11 tracks of pummeling death metal that compose “Coffinized.” The album was produced and engineered by Kling and Nordberg, mixed by Kling and mastered by Jonas Kjellgren (Immortal, Overkill, Scar Symmetry) at Sweden’s Black Lounge Studios. Its track listing is as follows:

Coffinized
Future Terminal
Choirs of Sickness
Radiant DevastaXon
Cathedral Dawn
Black Providence
Discordia
Treacherous
This Consuming Nocturne
Aperture Expands
Faith in Uncreation

THE ABSENCE first burst onto the scene in 2005 with their crushing, Erik Rutan-produced Metal Blade debut “From Your Grave.” That album and its two follow-ups, 2007’s “Riders of the Plague” and 2010’s “Enemy Unbound,” showcased a perfect mixture of heart wrenching melodies and skull-pounding aggression, truly making them one of the premiere bands of the melodic death metal scene. THE ABSENCE further cemented their reputation via numerous tours supporting some of the biggest names in metal, including Cannibal Corpse, The Black Dahlia Murder, Amon Amarth, Sabaton, Goatwhore, Evergrey, Malevolent Creation, Kataklysm and Destruction. Following a lengthy hiatus, the band regrouped in 2016 with a new lineup uniting founding members Stewart and Kling with long-time bassist Leon and guitarists Nordberg and Joey Concepcion for “A Gift for The Obsessed.” (Concepcion appears on four tracks on “Coffinized.”)

BLACK STONE CHERRY and Mascot Records / Mascot Label Group have announced the digital only release of an expanded edition of the band’s seventh studio album, The Human Condition on August 27.   The band shares, “Tracy Chapman’s voice and songs are absolutely timeless. We would have never imagined the positive feedback we received from something we thought was just a fun version of an already great song! We hope y’all dig it!”

The new album by SUIDAKRA was released on Friday, 25 June! “Wolfbite” contains 9 songs full of uncompromisingness and joy of playing. The collaboration with Aljoscha Sieg for mixing and mastering, which seems unusual at first glance, results in a breathtaking, lively sound, which from the very first note makes any scepticism about whether Suidakra still sound like Suidakra in 2021 evaporate. And how they do!

Another preview of the band’s 14th longplayer, “Vortex Of Carnage”, is now available on the MDD Records Youtube channel. If you decide to buy a digital copy of the album on Bandcamp, you will, only there, get the 24-page booklet and the 50-page comic book with the story behind “Wolfbite” illustrated by Kris Verwimp as a PDF download!

SPACE CHASER Launch Video For New Single “The Immortals”

On July 16th, Berlin’s SPACE CHASER will release their new album, Give Us Life, via Metal Blade Records. For a preview of the record, a video for the new single, “The Immortals”, can be viewed here:

The first single, “Remnants of Technology”, can be heard at: metalblade.com/spacechaser – where Give Us Life is available in various formats.

Nothing can beat the thrill of thrash at its best, and no one is keeping the spirit and sound of the genre alive quite like Space Chaser. Marking their ten-year anniversary with their third full-length, Give Us Life, they are returning in force and once again establishing their importance in the scene. “What we do is contemporary Thrash Metal, if you will, and while still having the ‘old-school’ elements everyone loves, we try to incorporate some of the influences that we expose ourselves to. Over the last ten years, this kind of music progressed a lot, and of course that has its influence on us. But what we do is still Thrash Metal, we just hope we’re able to translate it a little bit better into 2021.”

The album was recorded at their go-to studio, Berlin’s Hidden Planet, with Jan Oberg, who the band acknowledge is a rather unknown name in the metal scene, but his work proves up to par with international standards nonetheless. The songs were produced by guitarist Leo Schacht and drummer Matthias Scheuerer with the help of Oberg, and for mastering they had Dan Swanö of Unisound Studios at the helm. “It was the smoothest recording process we have ever had. Everybody went in perfectly prepared and every idea worked out just how we anticipated. It’s almost surreal, though being satisfied with your production can lead you to get lost in details forever – and the intro for ‘Burn Them All’ was a bitch!” Acknowledging that it feels weird to have reached their tenth anniversary already, this landmark has only stoked the fires. “We never felt so pumped and ready for whatever life throws at us,” they say, and asking what they see when they look to the band’s future, they are emphatic. “World domination! Well…sort of. I think every band just wants to get as big a name in the metal world as possible, and we are no exception. We really hope to expand our fanbase outside of Germany with ‘Give Us Life‘, and we never even dreamt of getting the chance to release a record through Metal Blade. Furthermore, we definitely want to tour a lot as soon as we are allowed to. We are anxious to leave Europe for the first time, and we want to prove that we are capable of delivering on an international standard.”

CASSIUS KING To Release “Field Trip” Album on July 23rd, Reveal Notes on Cover Art Concept

Posted by tarjavirmakari on June 26, 2021

CASSIUS KING, led by guitarist Dan Lorenzo (Hades, Non-Fiction, Vessel Of Light) with Dangerous Toys/Broken Teeth vocalist Jason McMaster, will release their debut album “Field Trip” on July 23rd via Nomad Eel Records. Today the band reveals notes on cover art concept, read below.

When writing lyrics for the music given, it is normal for the full vision , or concept, of the cover art to come into play much later, and sometimes can even feel forced when given a deadline.

Sometimes, the band name can help conjure the art and where it can go. That was not the case with Cassius King when hearing the song’s pre vocal/lyric idea in rough song form.

…it started with a sort of doom sound. That is my opinion. Some might argue that CK is not really true doom metal. It has that feel here and there and continue ]s to get comparisons to the band, “Trouble”, and the like. So, the “Sabbath” sound seems to come though, influencing my pen, to write of dark shades, and night time minded wanderings. Blame it on the riffs, is what I say.

One of the earlier lyrics I wrote for this, was the song that ended up being called “Leave of Absence”, telling the loose story of being a subject in a mental institution, or in a memory care facility. It automatically brings up memories, personally, as well as from other art, books and movies. Maybe not limited to “One flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest”, but, yes…
I talk of getting lost ,and actually sing of “dancing in the field, until the doctors find you”, non specific as a metaphor that can be used, and ends up making sense when you hear the lyric “your white gown blows up high, above your head”. The guys in white scrubs and sneakers in a sort of search and rescue coming to get you to take you back to the looney bin, after you have conveniently, and somewhat harmlessly escaped. I need to mention, the sort of mind altering medications one might be prescribed after they diagnose you as, well,“ crazy”?… crazy because you talk to imaginary beings that might not, or might actually exist, being the reason you have been told that you are… “crazy”. Even if… these things/beings you see, are your friends, and make you smile, and have docile moments throughout the day. The medications rob you of all of this. I feel I should mention here, to be fair, I have written about this subject matter before. A darker twist on the same thing, on an Ignitor song called, “the Golden Age of Black Magick”. It sings/talks about how the medications are not letting you see/feel the things that might be helping you and your health, in some way, even if they go against common beliefs the doctors and administrations consider archaic, or bad for the media.

As I write the lyrics for “Leave of Absence”,  I actually do not have a title before I pen the lines leading up to the final map of the lyric idea. I have a breakdown line that says “just another field trip”. I start out by calling the song “Field Trip”. I finish the song, the lyrics, and I send it to Dan (Lorenzo). Dan is so happy that the songs are coming to life, he pays no mind to where i am going with this. Then, almost on an indecisive dime, I spin and start to think that the title is weak..( Writers doubt themselves often, which is why I don’t think I will ever finish my book). I changed the title to “Leave of Absence”. I inform Dan. No push back at all.

Jimmy (bassist James Schulman) and I started to collaborate on lyrical ideas. Between Jimmy, Dan and myself, we start thinking of what title of the record could/should be. We have half the record written at this point, when Jimmy, not knowing anything about the title change, pipes in and says “How about we call the record “Field Trip”.  pretty strange, and maybe not strange at all.

Fast forward, we start to conceptualize the content of the song we took the title from. Jimmy really shines in this moment by submitting asylum room photos, that are truly disgusting, but very much art. I throw the idea of the escaped looney on the trail with his imaginary friends, that only he can see, or thinks are real. Rough ideas take shape. I photoshop the roughs and send them to the band. They think the cover art could be actually finished before the record is. I tell them to pump the breaks and insist we need a real artist to take this to another level.

Enter Claudio Bergamin. the artist known for the cover art for Judas Priest’s “Firepower”.
I met Claudio in Portland, OR. some years ago at a heavy metal convention. He was super cool, and we chatted about nothing and everything in a few minutes. He gave me his card and told me to contact him if I ever needed art.

What you see on the cover, front and back, are photos taken by Claudio, and manipulated into the concept and vision. It all came from an honest place. Some of it originates from time spent with my mother in a memory care facility, and meeting other patients and doctors. I learned a lot. As you can imagine, or have had the same experiences.
Jason McMaster
