Emerging from the ashes of CHURCH OF VOID, there is a new force rising up to pursue a path in the name of doom: FIMIR, who just released signed a worldwide deal with Argonauta Records, have shared a first single and more details of their upcoming debut album!
Containing six, heavy cosmic tracks unleashing an enthralling blend of razor sharp riffage, a haunting occult vibes, ambient soundspheres and classic doom metal, FIMIR‘s first full-length, entitled Tomb Of God, is slated for a release on July 30th. Today, the band has shared a first track and music video for the epic doom juggernaut “Temple Of Madness”! Says vocalist & guitarist Magus Corvus:
“Temple of Madness.. the title speaks for itself.Three screeching guitars, hammering bass and drums of doom with a choir consisting of Cosmic God’s Acolytes. A familiar song from our demo tape, it is the central part of our thematic set of songs. I think it pretty much sums up what Fimir’s first album is about; well packed chaos neatly ordered for your pleasure. Crank it up loud!”
FIMIR was founded in 2019 by former CHURCH OF VOID members G. Funeral, Magus Corvus, H. Warlock, A.D. and Septic Apes’ drummer H. Wizzard. From a mere spark in the dark and a distant echo of forgotten riffs haunting in emptiness from a collapsed doomstar of their former band, FIMIR got rid of their ghosts and started to work on their first album right away, until the world went into lockdown. Ultimately, the five-piece collective hailing from the frozen wastelands of Finland, used their time and creativity wisely, and managed to put the final touches on their upcoming debut, which will be available as Vinyl, CD and Digital formats on July 30, 2021 through Argonauta Records. The pre-sale has just started at THIS LOCATION!

PAUL GILBERT and The Players Club / Mascot Label Group have released the virtuosic guitarist’s 16th solo Werewolves of Portland. The guitarist shares, “Let’s start with the things I love. The trees. The rivers. My local guitar repair shop, bakery, and grocery store. Beautiful places for walking and biking. Driving to anything in less than 15 minutes. My musician and recording engineer friends. Small businesses and wonderful restaurants. My son’s school and teachers. The pie bakery! I love all these. Then there’s that other stuff you see on the news. I don’t want to kick Portland while it’s down. But if it stays like this, I may need to sneak away. I’m hoping to live somewhere that isn’t in the news so much. I haven’t heard much about North Dakota lately, which is good. I’ve actually never been there. I like buffalo. That’s a start. Thank you, Paul.”

MOJO MOJO and Paul Gilbert have released a new signature overdrive pedal, inspired by the gear he has been performing with for years. Danish guitar effects company TC Electronic, whom he’s been collaborating with for almost a decade, collaborated with the guitarist on the design and creation of the MojoMojo Paul Gilbert Edition. The redesign of his mainstay overdrive pedal truly adds a new dimension of pure shredding power to the pedal board. Gilbert offers, “The MojoMojo has been a mainstay on my pedalboard for years. I love the tones that it gives me! But I always wished that it was purple. Now it is purple! And it goes to eleven! Even better!” For a glimpse at the design, click here: https://redirect.is/q8c1ut1
“It has been an absolute pleasure and a unique experience to work with Paul on tailoring this pedal to his exact needs and preference,” says Paul Robert Scott, Customer Solutions Guitar and Bass Leader. “And we’re not just talking about a new stylish custom color. Paul always uses the same settings on his MOJOMOJO, which meant there was no need for the additional Voice switch found on the original version. Instead, we went for an ‘Eleven’ switch that engages a massive gain boost for even more drive and attack, taking it to, well, eleven! On top of that, you can add stepped-up circuit board voltage that increases both headroom and dynamics significantly.” Further, MOJOMOJO PAUL GILBERT EDITION features classic TC Electronic characteristics such as True Bypass, easy battery compartment access, road-worthy reliability and an intuitive user interface that supports a constant flow of creative juices and spontaneous ideas.

With the international lockdown putting the world on hold, Gilbert approached recording Werewolves Of Portland playing all the instruments on the album himself. He offers, “It took me about six months to think of it, but it finally occurred to me that I could play all the instruments myself. I’ve always loved playing drums, and I can play bass and keyboards well enough to get the job done.”
When it comes to writing, Gilbert reveals that surprisingly it isn’t the guitar that provides the impetus. “Mostly, I write by singing. I use the lyrics to give myself a structure where I can hang the notes. Once the melody is long enough to have some life in it, my musical instincts can take over. I can often finish the song without needing more words. But if I get stuck, lyrics will always get me going again.” He continues, “My guitar can hit the high notes! It’s amazing to have the physical limitations of my voice… gone! The challenge is to be expressive, with all the slides, vibrato, dynamics, and tones that a voice has. I’m constantly learning vocal melodies on guitar, so I get used to playing with the kind of expression that singers have.”
Recorded at Opal Studio in Portland with co-producer and engineer Kevin Hahn, Gilbert pulled out some of his current favorite guitars for the job. “I mostly used my Ibanez Fireman guitars,” he says. “I’ve been collecting vintage Ibanez guitars lately, too. I brought some models from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s like the Ibanez Artist, Roadstar II and Ghostrider. I also brought and modified a ’60s Epiphone Olympic. I used to play those in the early days of Racer X, so it was fun to have a guitar that reminded me of my early shredder style.”
The album title’s inspiration partly comes from the Warren Zevon song, “Werewolves Of London”. “I live in Portland and thought it would be funny to substitute the name of my much lesser-known city. My original idea for the ‘Werewolves’ was just the guys in my band and me. When we play music, it is our version of ‘howling at the moon’. Unfortunately, Portland has become more ‘known’ in the last year for events that are pretty sad to watch. And ‘Werewolves’ could take on other meanings that I certainly hadn’t anticipated. But the title, to me, still has a musical meaning.”
Gilbert is a formidable force. From his time in LA metallers Racer X to helping form Mr. Big, one of the era’s most revered names. His distinguished solo career has seen him putting out 15 acclaimed records and has been asked to guest on albums from such diverse names as Todd Rundgren, Bowling For Soup, Glenn Hughes and MC Lars. He also toured with Joe Satriani and John Petrucci in 2007 (G3) and two years later with Richie Kotzen and George Lynch (Guitar Generation). This is not to mention a lengthy tenure as a much-in-demand teacher and instructor. This began when he was still a teenager, being hired in 1985 by the prestigious Guitar Institute Of Technology (GIT) in Los Angeles.
“I didn’t become a musician to shout my ideas, complaints, or philosophies at anyone. I love music because of the music. So, I love my method of using my inner rants as scaffolding to build melodies. This scaffolding can then be pulled away to unveil some pure emotional music. This works perfectly for me and hopefully for my listeners. “I need to be able to visualize the look and sound of my fretboard well enough to play accurately in my mind. It’s almost like real air guitar! Then when I actually go to play the music, I’ve got a good chance of having my melodic intentions come true. And that’s about the best feeling in the world.”
Avant-garde metal act WOODEN VEINS are celebrating the release of their debut album, titled “In Finitude”, which is out now on powerhouse label The Vinyl Divsion.
Inspired by “Poética de Arturo H. Lobos”, a book written by WOODEN VEINS‘ vocalist Javier Cerda, “In Finitude” talks about life and death, illusions and the existential reflections of being. A profoundly honest and personal debut by the band from Chile, taking the listener on an absorbing trip into unimaginable spheres. In support of their new album, WOODEN VEINS just shared a new and mesmerizing video clip for the track “Empty Arcs”.
“Empty Arcs is about the fleetingness of existence. From how small we are on this blue ball that moves in an incalculable space and how being able to experience it, is something that has an equally incalculable value.“ the band states.
Furthermore they add:
“During the pre-production process, the initial draft of this song was conceived as a fresh idea by Eduardo, who developed the main motif and made it present in a 16-beat sequence throughout the entire song, all of this initially with programmed drums, putting in front the electronic elements that have already been anticipated more discreetly in the other songs. With these electronic rhythms and sounds guiding the way, we moved forward; Ideas of texts and vocals presented by Javier, that on the other hand Juan took and developed while adding the guitars and bass lines. And so, little by little, we put everything together, with Alberto who gave the track the final touch by adding his drums, applying contrast, weight and warmth to that first proposal that was completely programmed.“
Produced by Juan Escobar at Vultura Studio, Czech Republic and mastered by Magnus Lindberg in Sweden (Cult Of Luna, Tribulation, Dool, Lucifer), “In Finitude” is out NOW on The Vinyl Division and available for purchase at THIS LOCATION

To darken the rays of the coming summer sun, Mattias Norrman’s (OCTOBER TIDE, ex-KATATONIA) new Black Metal band KRYPTAN will release its first self-titled mini album on July 23rd. Today, we unveil a first song, ‘Blessed Be The Glue’, whose raging, melodically concise riffs bring contemporary power to influences from the ‘90s Scandinavian classics. It sounds dark, atmospheric and uncompromising.
Composer Mattias narrates about the development of this track:
”’Blessed Be The Glue’ was the second track I wrote for KRYPTAN in early 2020. I picked up the guitar and started riffing – and so the vers riff appeared. It sounded cool, so I recorded it, added the keys, and created the short intro. Then the rest of the song developed quite naturally with a good flow. The intention was to add some more riffs into it, but after I let the song rest for a while and picked it up again, I kind of liked the simplicity of the song. So, I sent it to Alex Högbom (vocals), and he wrote and arranged the lyrics.”
‘Blessed Be The Glue’ can now be streamed via Bandcamp and on YouTube.
All in all, four compositions form KRYPTAN’s debut:
01. A Giant Leap For Whoredom 02. Bedårande barn 03. Blessed Be The Glue 04. Burn The Priest
The EP was recorded at Glashuset Studios and engineered as well as mixed by Mats Andersson (WRETCHED FATE). Thomas ‘Plec’ Johansson (MAYHEM, WATAIN) of The Panic Room took care of the mastering.
“Kryptan” will be released on CD, 10″ vinyl, and digitally on July 23rd. Pre-orders are possible via our EU, US, and Bandcamp shops.
KRYPTAN is an atmospheric Black Metal band from Avesta, Sweden. Founded in early 2020, right at the beginning of the global pandemic, KRYPTAN took shape to embody the passion for Black Metal that songwriter and guitarist Mattias ‘Kryptan’ Norrman harboured for decades.
A familiar face in the scene, Mattias, who is most recognized for playing guitar in OCTOBER TIDE and previously bass in KATATONIA, has long striven for his very own musical endeavor.
Heavily inspired by the 90s era of Norwegian and Swedish Black Metal, life, and the crushing darkness of Swedish winters, Mattias created enthralling songs bursting with sinister energy and craftsmanship. KRYPTAN aim to take listeners back in time and celebrate a glorious musical legacy in a contemporary fashion. The band is completed by fellow OCTOBER TIDE member Alexander Högbom on vocals and Samuel Karlstrand of WRETCHED FATE on drums.
Four songs for a first release were already recorded with Mats Andersson at Glashuset Studios over the course of 2020. Finally, mastered by Thomas Plec Johansson at The Panic Room and signed by Debemur Morti Productions the following year, the self-titled EP will be released in 2021.
A full-length album is already in the works and the band is looking forward to taking their raw, majestic Swedish Black Metal to the stage as well.
Brazilian/American thrash metallers BEHIND THE HORROR have released their brand new video ‘History Behind The Horror Pt 2’ from their podcast series and stream it exclusively via Ghost Cult Magazine. The podcast can be viewed here.
In addition, Behind the Horror also released a blistering cover of Sepultura’s “Territory”. The video can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/ZDTrt06DIdU
The reinterpretation of Territory ( Sepultura ) is once again a testament to the musical ability of the two Alves brothers! With musical and uncompromising roughness, Behind The Horror pay tribute to their role models from Sepultura and do it in a sensible and appealing way. Sometimes covers have a reputation for looking like soulless copies of the original, but Territory ( cover ) of Behind The Horror doesn’t. Precise and quick drums drive Gabriel Alves’ guitar playing solid and with variation, although he is also fluent when playing his guitar and does honor to Territory on both an instrumental and a vocal level. Regarding composing skills, there is nothing to be said here, as is the case with cover versions, But Behind The Horror definitely pay a great tribute to the original with their musical and vocal skills!
