STEEL JUNGLE‘s song – Moonwalking – started it’s birth journey from a 5-timed rhythm of Varis the drummer, next to which the bass-player weaved a gravity-defying riff on acoustic guitars together with Lammin-Soila, powered by meticulously brewed steaming espresso-shots in finely cracked cups.
The working title of the song was Daidalos, but when the mixing went exceptionally well, the song’s mythology was sacrificed on the face of commercialism. We won’t elaborate more on this cultural hero.
Mixer/producer Tervo got excited in recording more guitars on top of the floating and frozen sound atmosphere while scraping all Greek traditions away from the song, pushing Lammin-Soila to celestial heights with the sound of his guitar. These reversed verses were recorded in a matured red shed, which is the second most cramped studio in Finland.
On the other hand – the new keyboardist Jusa was allowed to go crazy on his keys, such as is tradition when new bandsmen are shaken down. The old geezers are already worn down, but due to Jusa being the bass-player Juho’s son he still has a slight possibility to have a future with the band. Also when one squints a bit, one can consider him quite handsome.
More of this treat is coming soon when the album ”The Golden Cut” is released in its entirety!
Composer, arranger and current guitarist for German heavy metal monsters U.D.O. and Dirkschneider, Andrey Smirnoff has released the first single “Samurai” from his upcoming solo album, Electric Gravity.
Andrey Smirnoff: “I like creating music and I always wanted to put out an instrumental solo record. Last year was a bit chaotic and strange but it gave me the time to give all my attention to this album. I wanted to give my guitar a lead vocal ability and make it sing. As an active musician I always have a “few’ ideas on my mind. Samurai was one of those. Few more guitar singles with video are coming soon and digital release of album is planned for September 2021.”
“Electric Gravity” was created as a quintessence of all the best guitar oriented music genres. Andrey easily moves from classic heavy guitar riffing to jazz and twist, from modern metal aggression to soft and melodic ballads.
Underground punk legends THE DOGS have unleashed a video for their new single ‘Under The Coast’ that was co-written with and features fellow rock ‘n’ roller Frank Meyer (The Streetwalkin’ Cheetahs,James Williamson & The Pink Hearts) on guest vocals and guitar. The socially conscious, topical song is available now through Chicanery Chick Records/Die Laughing Records on all digital formats and the video compliments the song itself. The track deals with the chaos and dissonance of modern times.
“Somebody call for help cuz there’s panic in the air A troubled sense of unease that is tangible and there, So real you think you can taste it so loud it rings a bell, Your 2020 vision can’t prepare you for this hell.”
“Frank and I go way back,” says THE DOGS front man Loren Molinare. “His band The Streetwalkin’ Cheetahs and THE DOGS have been in the trenches of the rock ‘n’ roll wars for years together, playing cutthroat gigs side by side. We had always talked about collaborating on a song one day. Then right at the beginning of the pandemic, Frank texted me and asked if I was recording at home at all. I told him just had a few riffs in my phone, but I’d send them over. Next thig I knew he took them into GarageBand and wrote a full realized song around all my parts! And it was a really strong song.”
‘’Tension runs like ripples in the sea of your demise, Creating waves of dissonance that shadow like the tides, The eyes in back of skulls keep the watcher on his board, But he is watching who when the visitors on shore and he wants a little more?”
“Loren sent me these killer riffs that had a punk thing going on but also had this power-pop meets surf rock twang to ‘em,” adds Meyer, “and since society was just starting to fall apart with the pandemic and riots, I started writing about that. But I wanted the vibe to be kind of happy like ‘Hey, the world’s falling apart around us and the apocalypse is near, so let’s head to the beach and surf!’ Sort of a west coast punk rock take on Prince’s ‘1999’ in a way.”
“Let’s raise a glass and make a toast, Let’s celebrate and prepare the roast, With the waves that come crashing down You think you’re lost but then you’re found, Can you hear the sound? Under the coast”
So Molinare took the demo to THE DOGS — bassist Mary Kay and drummer Tony Matteucci – to work it up and all the trio gathered at Pawnshop Studios with producer Richard Duguay to cut the tracks, sending Meyer the mixes to record his vocals from his home studio since Southern California was on lockdown at the time.
Bassist Mary Kay says, “it’s a strange time and Loren and Frank did a great job of capturing the tension and hypocrisy in the air these days.”
“This feeling overtakes you like the writing on the wall, Tragedy masks the humor of your imminent downfall, The pretty things will fade away like your slowly turning looks, The words you say won’t be forgotten like pages in a book.”
“As soon as Loren mentioned doing a video, I had this idea of project images over the band members, sort of like a ‘60s go-go dancing’ flick meets David Lynch-style art film. The images needed to move along fast and match the song too, so they needed to reference both the SoCal happy-sunny beach vibe plus the violent underbelly of modern city life and the politics that keep us all paranoid. So basically, it’s a sunshine apocalypse!”
Front man Loren said we booked a soundstage to shoot the video but then I tested positive for COVID-19 and went into a 14-day self-isolation. We asked Frank with his film directing background if there was a way to shoot the video under the COVID restrictions and he knocked it out of the park with his concept.
Formed in Lansing, Michigan in 1968, THE DOGS started as proto-punk band playing alongside The Stooges, MC5, and KISS before eventually moving to Los Angeles in 1976 and joining the ranks of the emerging west coast punk scene. The trio’s appeared on the Killed By Death compilation and the notorious “Slash Your Face” 7” single cemented the band’s way-ahead-of-it’s-time status. After a breakup, the band reformed to release the 2000 Compilation Fed Up album Suburban Nightmare on Dionysus Records and have been going strong ever since.
Die Laughing Records will also issue ‘Under The Coast’ on vinyl later this year as the B-side to The Dogs’ previous digi-single ‘Welcome to the Revolution.’

Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voicerecently spoke to Richie Kotzen (Mr. Big, Poison, The Winery Dogs), who is promoting the debut album from his collaborative project with IRON MAIDEN’s Adrian Smith. Smith/Kotzen, will release their self-titled debut album on March 26 2021 via BMG.
Excepts from the interview When asked how the two met and whose idea it was to work together. “I met Natalie his wife first and that’s how I met Adrian. We were out one night meeting a friend and my friend’s talking to her and said I play guitar and then she said her husband played the guitar in a band. Then she (Natalie) said he was Adrian Smith in Iron Maiden and I got all excited cause I’m a huge Maiden fan. That was one of my first concerts when I was a kid. I saw them in Pennsylvania on the Piece of Mind tour. “Natalie and Adrian would have these holiday parties in L.A. not too far from where I live and we would have these get-togethers and there was a room where guitars were and the amps and it would turn into a jam session. In one of the most recent times Natalie said you and Adrian should try and write something together. We got together, one thing led to another and we thought let’s go make a record.”
When asked about the musical direction of the album “It reminds me of one of those classic rock albums I would have had back in the day. I would be playing my Ozzy record and my Scorpions record then pop this on. It kind of brings me back to an era when people made records and actually played real instruments and guitar driven rock albums. Classic rock but a little on the heavier side and blues driven. “
When asked if Smith/Kotzen plays live will it include any Iron Maiden songs in the set list, since you have only one album “That’s a good question and something we have to think about cause we only have 9 songs on the album. I would imagine we would play the entire album, maybe add in one or two covers. Then maybe we do one of Adrian’s songs from Maiden, maybe pick one of my songs from one of my records? It is something we got to think about. “
Smith/Kotzen Recorded on the Turks & Caicos Islands in February 2020, produced by Richie and Adrian and mixed by Kevin “Caveman” Shirley, this nine-track opus is a consummate collaboration between these two highly respected musicians who co-wrote all the songs and also share lead vocals and trade off on guitar and bass duties throughout the record.
Building upon the excitement from the announcement of his sophomore album, The Ides Of March, last month, MYLES KENNEDY is releasing its title track to the masses. “The Ides Of March” is the longest song on the album, clocking in at 7:39, and showcases the musicianship of Kennedy and cohorts – longtime friend and drummer Zia Uddin and bassist/manager Tim Tournier. The band stretch out musically as Kennedy sings an ominous warning “beware the ides of March.”
MYLES KENNEDY says about “The Ides Of March”: “Written quickly one night after having a few drinks, it was an attempt to sum up what so many of us felt during the beginning of the pandemic. We were bored, frustrated and self-medicating to avoid going stir crazy. What I like about the narrative, is it pushes the idea that if everything is going to hell, at least try and do it in a celebratory fashion.”

Never a musician to waste any precious time, Alter Bridge and Slash and the Conspirators vocalist MYLES KENNEDY used the recent pandemic to finalize his sophomore solo album. During his time at home due to all touring being canceled, Myles created the framework for the song ideas that would make up The Ides Of March. From the slide guitar riffs of the album opener “Get Along” to the pensive blues style of closer “Worried Mind,” it is clear that Myles has crafted a formidable follow up to his debut solo album. While Year Of The Tigerwas more of an acoustic exploration through Myles’ mind, The Ides Of March finds him strapping on his electric guitar and pushing himself as a guitarist/songwriter. Tracks like “A Thousand Words,” “Wake Me When It’s Over” and “Moonshot” showcase the diverse musical arrangements that have garnered Myles fans globally across all of his projects. The Ides Of Marchwas produced by longtime collaborator Michael “Elvis” Baskette and is slated for release on May 14 via Napalm Records.
The first single “In Stride” opens with Myles showcasing his slide playing before delivering a lyrical message to “take it all in stride.” The song is currently seeing heavy rotation at rock radio stations around the world, leading to a Top 15 placement in the German Rock Radio Airplay Charts and rising in the Top 30 at US Active Rock, and has received massive response from fans alike. The video for “In Stride” marks a return by Stefano Bertelli (who created the “Native Son” video for Alter Bridge) and shows an animated Myles as he takes the end of the world in stride. The video for the song can be seen HERE.
