Metal Blade Records is proud to welcome Denmark’s IOTUNN to its worldwide roster!

Formed in 2015, Iotunn (which is old Norse for “Giant”) entered the scene with their acclaimed EP, The Wizard Falls (2016), which was mixed by Flemming Rasmussen (Metallica, Morbid Angel, Blind Guardian, Rainbow) at Sweet Silence Studios. After some line-up changes, the band found their voice and narrator in March 2018: Jón Aldará (Hamferd), plus bassist Eskil Rask (Sunless Dawn) in October 2019. The quintet – completed by Jens Nicolai Gräs (guitars), Jesper Gräs (guitars), Bjørn Wind Andersen (drums) – then began work on their first full-length and Metal Blade Records debut: Access All Worlds.

Iotunn comments: “As we have worked intensely on creating ‘Access All Worlds‘, we find our partnership with Metal Blade Records to be a culmination. We are proud and thankful of where we’re at right now. Metal Blade seems like the right home for us and we are convinced that the future looks bright!”

Mixed and mastered by Fredrik Nordström (In Flames, At the Gates, Dimmu Borgir) at Fredman Studios, Access All Worlds is set for an early 2021 release. Stay tuned for more Iotunn news coming soon!

MANTICORA Release Second Video “Katana – Death Of The Meaning Of Life” From Critically Acclaimed 9th Album

Danish prog-thrash veterans, MANTICORA have released the 2nd video offering from their critically acclaimed 9th album “To Live To Kill To Live“, the follow-up and 2nd part of a huge concept, to 2018’s “To Kill To Live To Kill” – both albums, based on the 334-page horror/thriller novel that lead singer Lars F. Larsen wrote.

The album has been rated extremely highly by the press and the band has never in their 20+ career received such appraisal from an almost united press-core, so the band felt that a 2nd video offering would be appropriate.

This semi-lyrical video for the song “Katana – Death Of The Meaning Of Life” – a song, with a very strong Nevermore-ish feel to it, is vividly composed and produced by the talented Chilean video producer Federico Bossinga from the company Abstract Chaos.

The story of the song is again a very sad, bordering on despair-inducing, tale which the band is delving deep into at several occasions on the last 2 albums, making up the huge concept.

Guitarist, Kristian Larsen explains the story:
Since this song deals with the story in which a young Dutch sailor – situated in Hong Kong, 1921, at the time when the story takes place – is falling in love with a local prostitute and looking at what he calls the love of his life, getting brutally murdered by local thugs, we wanted to express ourselves in colours that match the story.

The light blue colours, resembling the room in which most of the story takes place, the dark red, resembling the extreme amount of blood, present in the story, when several people are killed in violent ways (by means of either gun or Katana.

Federico was fed the lyrics, the story and all our ideas and impressions of this sad story and he has splendidly matched the storyline with the colours and imagery.

Tracklist for “To Live To Kill To Live“:

01. Katana – The Moths And the Dragonflies/Katana – Mud
02. To Nanjing (instrumental)
03. The Farmer’s Tale Pt. 3 – Eaten By The Beasts
04. Slaughter In The Desert Room
05. Through The Eyes Of The Killer – Filing Teeth
06. Katana – Death Of The Meaning Of Life
07. Tasered/Ice Cage
08. Goodbye Tina
09. Tasered/Removal
10. Stalin Strikes (instrumental)
11. Ten Thousand Cold Nights
12. Katana – Beheaded

The music on both albums was recorded partially in the band’s own studio and recorded/mixed in Hansen Studios, with World-famous producer, Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Destruction, a.o.) who also produced the first two MANTICORA albums back in the last millennium.

The 334 page novel itself was released in May 2018, followed by the first album of the concept in August 2018.

MANTICORA have released 9 critically acclaimed albums, since 1999, and toured numerous times around Europe, North America and Japan + played at prestigious festivals, such as Wacken Open Air, Sweden Rock Festival, Copenhell, Karmøygeddon, ProgPower USA, etc.

VERDE LAURO To Release New Album ‘6 Aprile’

Posted by tarjavirmakari on November 10, 2020
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: VERDE LAURO. Leave a comment

‘6 Aprile’ is the second album by VERDE LAURO, created by the Italian-Swiss singer Fabrizio Sassi, which follows the debut album ‘Son animali al mondo’ which saw the participation of numerous guests, including  Roberto Tiranti and Alessandro Del Vecchio.

Unlike “Son animali al mondo”, this second chapter was designed and created to be played live. The orchestrations were reduced and the verses were selected to be repeated in chorus. ‘6 Aprile’ is set to be released on all digital platforms on November 17th and in LTD digipack CD December 2020.

At the level of compositions, those that narrate another passage from the neverending story were chosen and in particular the passages that play on the root of the name Laura. Precisely for this reason “6 Aprile” is perhaps a less elaborate and symphonic record than its predecessor but this is its strong point, the “song” form of its pieces, much more powerful and direct.

Petrarch meets Laura for the first time on April 6, 1327. Laura dies on April 6, 1348. The numbers of the Canzoniere are part of the story and are used symbolically. No number is random. Starting with the fragments that make up the mosaic. 366. Like a year that repeats itself forever.

As for the lineup, Andrea Grumelli joined (in the first album the bass was played by guitarists) and Federico De Zani took over the drums. Mattia Stancioiu (Ex Labyrinth) preferred to stay behind the mixer and give up the pedals.

The guests are Morby from Domine and Marcello Zappatore on guitar. Drakkar singer Davide dell’Orto has become a full member of the group. Laura’s identity is always a secret and also appears in some passages of this record.

Line-up
Fabrizio Sassi – voice
Davide Dell’Orto – voice
Pier Gonella – guitar
Francesco Marras- guitar
Andrea Grumelli – bass
Mauro Desideri – Keyboards
Federico “Chicco“ De Zani – Drums

Guests
Marcello Zappatore

Purchase and stream Punching The Sky now at: metalblade.com/armoredsaint Leaders and stalwarts of the American heavy metal scene since the early 80s, Armored Saint‘s Punching The Sky sees them returning hard. A diverse, attitude-drenched collection, it’s everything the band’s faithful have come to expect from them while pushing their signature sound forward. “The goal is to write really good music. I know I’m stating the obvious here but that’s about the size of our agenda,” says bassist Joey Vera. “We’ve been able to shed a lot of expectations that sometimes plague a band like ours that has been around a long time, and we’ve recently moved into a comfort zone with just being ourselves. We have this kind of freedom now that we didn’t really have early in our career, and we can take some chances and make the kind of music that we want to hear. This record is a reflection of where we are at, right now.” Exploding to life with the crunchy, rousing “Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants” and not letting up until the closing ruthless riff of “Never You Fret”, the record is possessed of an urgency and vigor which very much places it in the right now, but could only be the work of Vera, guitarists Phil Sandoval and Jeff Duncan, drummer Gonzo Sandoval and vocalist John Bush. “When you’re a band that began four decades ago, you really have to push yourself harder than ever when it comes to making a new record,” states Bush. “The last thing you ever want is for it to appear as though you were going through the motions or that you’re just putting a product out to do some touring. The records are immortal. They’ll be here long after us. Every one needs to count in its own individual way.”

With Vera acting as producer, he recruited the same engineering team that worked on Win Hands Down with drums recorded by Josh Newell at El Dorado Studios in Burbank, CA, guitars tracked by Bill Metoyer at Skullseven studios in North Hollywood, CA, and vocals, bass and additional recordings by the bassist at his studio. “I like working with people that I trust and have a good personal rapport with. That same reason is why I hired Jay Ruston (Anthrax, Amon Amarth, Stonesour) to mix the record. It’s important to be able to work with people who understand what the end goal is.” The process of realizing the album was a lot of hard work, Vera admitting he took on too many of the tasks himself, but he states that overall it was a good experience and everyone brought their A-game to the table and the right attitude for getting things done. “At the end of the mixing stage, I always have a hard time walking away from the project we’ve been working on for so long. It’s hard to let it go. The end result is good though. Everyone played and sang their asses off and it shows.” The record also features a few guest musicians further expanding its sonic palette, the whole thing kicking off with the sound of Uilleann Pipes, Vera finding player Patrick D’Arcy in LA and recruiting him to the cause. Guns ‘N’ Roses keyboardist Dizzy Reed also contributes, Vera giving both him and D’Arcy some general directions and letting them loose, both of them delivering strong performances. The band’s own Gonzo Sandoval plays an American Indian flute on “Never You Fret” – a first for Armored Saint and their drummer. Also Jacob Ayala, the son of a childhood friend who is a drum major in high school, added some marching snare on one of the tracks, which really stands out.

With the band’s place in the metal scene firmly reestablished with Punching The Sky, they are staring down their four decade anniversary, which Vera reflects on. “Part of me feels like I can’t believe we’ve been doing this for that long. It’s kind of incredible. So I feel pretty damn lucky really, that we’ve been able to have the support from fans and our record company for all these years. Without this support, we really couldn’t do any of this. So this is the big part of what has kept us going, and when I stop and look around, I am humbled that we’ve had this opportunity to make music and tour for such a long time. That’s what our initial goal was back when we were just 18 years old.”
