Following the release of their 2023 album, Dream Drop has been busy in the studio. Now after releasing blackcastle: pt.1, the first chapter of their larger album project the second chapter blackcastle: pt.2 takes the begining into a new era with the band during this autumn. Their second EP dives even deeper into the concept of a perfect dream world, a vision of a peaceful life spent on a porch in old age. But in reality, that dream feels distant and unreachable. The “castle” becomes a symbol of that life slipping through your fingers, a theme echoed in both the sound and visuals. Second single out is ”Fuck this, I gotta go”.

Bay Area thrash metal icons TESTAMENT returns this Fall with their fourteenth studio album, Para Bellum, which will be released on October 10th via Nuclear Blast Records. The albumstands as both a battle cry and an observation of humanity’s uneasy alliance with its own creations. As technology accelerates and disconnection grows, Para Bellum sees TESTAMENT reflecting the modern chaos through music that’s urgent, sharp, and unflinchingly human.
Testament’s newest single, ‘High Noon,’ is a Wild West adventure set to music, evoking images of duels and gunslingers. The song offers a nod to the band’s acclaimed The Gathering period, yet successfully incorporating fresh, contemporary elements, demonstrating the band’s forward momentum. Watch the animated video for ‘High Noon‘ created by Freakshot Films, here: https://youtu.be/q0fm7XmHJ_E
Chuck Billy comments, “We are so fired up about the release of Para Bellum. There were a lot of hours spent putting this together. These new songs put me out of my comfort zone as a vocalist but the final result I am very proud of what I accomplished. See you in the pit.🤘🏼.”

When walls of guitars meet the force of an orchestra, you know you’ve arrived in the world of Symphonic Metal. This genre fuses epic soundscapes with the raw power of metal. The result? Usually pure goosebumps. Whether you’re just diving into it or want to refresh your playlist — here are the most important bands and famous songs of the genre, from Nightwish and Within Temptation to Beyond The Black.
What Is Symphonic Metal?
Heavy Metal, Gothic, Power Metal — all of these elements and more can be found within the powerful world of Symphonic Metal. This subgenre emerged in the late 1990s with pioneering bands likeTherion, Nightwish, and Within Temptation. These trailblazers showed how metal and elements of classical music, e.g. from film and opera, can go hand in hand. Thematically, lyrics and concept albums often explore fantastical and epic subjects, frequently referencing literature or movies. It’s a world of grand sounds and dramatic compositions — and here are a few highlights to get you started!
The Cult Bands of the Genre
Nightwish – The Pioneers of Symphonic Metal
Since their founding in 1996, Nightwish have built a long and truly formative history. Tuomas Holopainen as the band’s main songwriter and each of the vocalists — especially Tarja Turunen— have shaped the genre in their own ways like no other band. Since 2013, Floor Jansen is the voice of the band and has been a creative force behind the band’s last three studio albums.
Their absolute breakthrough came in 2004 with the album Once and one of their most iconic songs, “Nemo.”
Twenty years later, their tenth studio album Yesterwynde was released. Here’s what the band sounds like today with the eight-minute epic “Perfume Of The Timeless.”
Epica & Simone Simons
In the early 2000s, a new band appeared on the Symphonic Metal scene: Epica’s sound is exactly what their name promises. FrontwomanSimone Simons has also been pursuing a solo career, releasing her debut album Vermillion in 2024. Only a few years after forming, Epica celebrated their first chart success, beginning with their Nuclear Blast debut The Divine Conspiracy.
Get a first impression of that album with the fan favorite “Never Enough.”
However, the band’s most-streamed song remains “Cry for the Moon (The Embrace That Smothers, Pt. 4)” from their debut album The Phantom Agony (2003).
Within Temptation – Bridging Pop & Metal
Founded the same year as Nightwish, Within Temptationwere formed by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist/vocalist Robert Westerholt. The Dutch band quickly rose to prominence in the growing Symphonic Metal scene. Their sound combines catchy, pop-inspired melodies with powerful arrangements and heavy guitar riffs.
Their best-known track is “Faster” from their dynamic 2007 album The Unforgiving.
With their 2019 album Resist, the band hit their most recent #1 album. Check out the opening track “The Reckoning,” featuring Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach:
The New Generation: Blackbriar, Beyond The Black & Beast In Black
Of course, the genre continues to evolve thanks to a constant influx of new bands — the younger generation of Symphonic Metal brings fresh energy to the scene.
Also hailing from the Netherlands, Blackbriar formed in 2012 and have since released three studio albums. One of their latest songs is “Floriography” — listen here:
Germany, too, is well represented in the symphonic scene: Beyond The Black have been releasing powerful records since 2015, rising steadily through major festival lineups such as Wacken Open Air. Their most recent, self-titled fifth studio album features the catchy opener “Is There Anybody Out There?”
Finally, we return to Finland with Beast In Black. From their very first album, they’ve been at home with Nuclear Blast and their song “Blind And Frozen” has already drawn comparisons to their fellow Finnish icons, Nightwish. Hear for yourself:
PERTURBATOR – the Paris-based composer/producer/multi-instrumentalist James Kent – today released his highly anticipated new album, Age of Aquarius. His debut for renowned metal label Nuclear Blast Records, mastered by Jaime Gomez Arellano (Ghost, Opeth)and featuring songs with Ulver, Alcest, Author & Punisher, and Greta Link, is available to stream & purchase now HERE. PERTURBATOR also shared his sweeping and cinematic latest single ‘Lady Moon,’ led by Link’s otherworldly vocals, and out now alongside an epic anime video directed/animated by French artist Victorien Aubineau.
“It’s a song about individualism and the power of the self. In a world where people seem to be increasingly in need of being part of something greater. It’s a song about being this ‘greater something’ and belonging and owing only to yourself,” Kent explains. Of the video, Aubineau notes, “I’ve been listening to Perturbator’s albums for a very long time, and, quite unconsciously, my own artistic universe has always been fed by his. I really like the idea of having structured the music video’s art direction into three distinct acts, allowing for a richer and deeper visual journey. This project was born, in a way, from our shared passion for the films: Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Appleseed.“
Along with earning a cover story at Kerrang!, early reviews of Age of Aquarius have been uniformly positive with praise and support via GBHBL New Noise Magazine, FLOOD Magazine, MXDWN, Decibel Magazine, and more. “Lady Moon” follows album singles ‘Mors Ultima Ratio,’ ‘The Swimming Pool,’ ‘Apocalypse Now,’ featuring lead vocals by Norwegian metal titan Kristoffer Rygg (Ulver), and ‘The Art of War,’ which earned great press via Brooklyn Vegan, Metal Injection, Exclaim!, Metal Sucks, The PRP, New Noise, and MXDWN, among others. Next month, Perturbator will embark on a headlining tour of the UK and Europe—which sees him playing his biggest venues to date—including London, UK’s 02 Forum Kentish Town and two nights at Paris’ La Bataclan; a full itinerary is listed below and tickets are on-sale HERE.
