Jan Akkerman in a live setting is a beautiful thing to behold, and on his new record,  ‘My Focus – Live Under the Rainbow,’ you can absorb his technical mastery and tone, where it was born to live – on stage. The live album will be released on 12 December via Artone/Music Theories Recordings and will be available on blue transparent vinyl, CD, and digitally. To whet your appetite, listen to the first cut taken from the album with  “Answers Questions – Questions Answers.“

Live music needs to offer you something that you cannot get on a studio recording. It’s the sense of freedom and intimacy, wondering how the songs will be played and what the reaction will be. Live concerts give you the tingle where the hair stands up on the back of your neck. “Live audiences give you the tension and responsibility to be creative, for me that’s the challenge I like,” says the iconic Dutch guitarist. After all of these years, you ponder what keeps Jan going out there, night after night. “It’s my love to play for people all around the world,” he smiles.

The supremely gifted guitarist is equalled by very few, and his legendary ability makes him impossible to pigeonhole. His position as Dutch royalty has been cemented; he received the Golden Harp Award in early 2005, Holland’s most prestigious music prize, and in 2012, he was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau. This royal honour recognised his contributions to Dutch music and his influence on musicians worldwide.

Akkerman was a founding member of Focus from 1969 to 1976, where he recorded several breakout albums, including ‘Focus II/Moving Waves’ (1971). The album spawned the mega-hit ‘Hocus Pocus’ which reached #9 on the US Billboard Chart, #12 in The Netherlands and #20 in the UK singles chart and the song has gone on to appear on numerous TV shows such as; Top Gear, Skins, Supernatural, Vinyl, My Name is Earl and Shameless as well as the 2007 film Hot Fuzz, 2014 remake of Robocop and 2017s Baby Driver. The song has been covered by several other artists, including Iron Maiden, Marillion, Helloween, Gary Hoey, The Vandals and Vanessa-Mae. ‘Focus 3’ (1972) featured another hit single, ‘Sylvia’, which reached #4 in the UK singles chart and led to appearances on The Old Grey Whistle Test and Top of the Pops. That year, Melody Maker declared him the ‘Best guitarist in the world’, above Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page.

My Focus – Live Under The Rainbow was recorded across Akkerman’s 2025 February tour,  with his band,Marijn van den Berg (Drums), David de Marez Oyens (Bass) and Coen Molenaar (Keys)as they played Bush Hall (London), The Fire Station (Sunderland), Philharmonic Hall (Liverpool), Oran Mor (Glasgow), The Met (Bury), The Stables (Wavendon), and The Apex (Bury St. Edmunds).

The album journeys through his timeless work with Focus – from the first song released from this release, “Answers Questions – Questions Answers”, through to the mega-hits, “Hocus Pocus,” “Sylvia”, “Focus I” and “Focus II” –  songs that are still close to his heart. “I play these songs because my soul and heart are in there. It’s a God given talent I have, which makes me feel proud of myself!” he says.

His incredible solo work stands tall amongst these giants, with “Piétons,” taken from 1983’s ‘Can’t Stand Noise,’ along with outings from his 2019 solo album, ‘Close Beauty,’ in “Tommy’s Anniversary” and the opening of the recording, “Spiritual Privacy.”

Longtime fans of Akkerman concerts might recognise moments such as “Palace of the King” and “Big Sur” from his live repertoire. “I made a totally different concept of the song from the old Focus days, but it still has that 3/4 feel, which I happen to like,” he explains. “Big Sur came from a novel I bought byJack Kerouac. Big Sur is devastatingly honest, painful, and yet beautifully written. He was sharing his pain and suffering with the reader in the same way Dostoyevsky did, with the idea of salvation through suffering.”

He has collaborated with a number of musicians including Alan Price (The Animals), Jack Bruce and Ice T and counts fans in Brian May who said Akkerman was “totally a hero of mine, there are some people in life that no matter how old you are, you feel nervous if you meet someone, he’s one of those, he’s a real role model”. The late-great B.B. King has also talked highly of him, saying, “How can you forget a guy like Jan. Usually with people that are as great as he is, you know of them, but you don’t always get to know them or their music, but you know their reputation. The nights that we played together were great, I wish I could play the things that he did.” Whilst Yes guitarist Peter Banks has also lauded him, calling him “an almost perfectly formed musician, his classical playing was tremendous. His improvising was second to none.”

There is something about instrumental music that can connect with people worldwide. “A friend of mine made a remark in a song that says, ‘Words are made to lie!'” he ponders with a wry smile.

Put on My Focus – Live Under The Rainbow and soak up the atmosphere of one of the world’s most gifted guitarists.

EMPIRE DROWNS Release New Single ‘Doomsday Clock’

With “Doomsday Clock”, Danish doom/death collective EMPIRE DROWNS unveils today the third harbinger of their forthcoming album “Endless Nights”. A fast-burning descent into tension and inevitability, the track entwines massive, churning riffs with mournful melodies and a suffocating atmosphere, embodying the looming shadow of its namesake. Equal parts apocalyptic and elegiac, “Doomsday Clock” is a stark reminder of the fragility of existence, carried through Empire Drowns’ signature blend of weight and melancholy, mixed with a mid-tempo urgency that fits the theme.

Once again mixed and mastered by Tue Madsen (Moonspell, The Haunted, Baest), the single sharpens the duality at the heart of Empire Drowns: bleak yet strangely beautiful, melodic yet crushingly heavy. “Doomsday Clock” not only extends the band’s desolate vision but also cements their place among the modern torchbearers of atmospheric doom and death metal.

“ADoomsday Clock” is available now on all streaming services and has also been released in a music video, which can be seen below.

Empire Drowns challenge the boundaries of melodic doom and death metal on their haunting new album “Endless Nights”, delivering a sonic experience where melancholy, atmosphere, and aggression collide in compelling fashion.

“Endless Nights” is a record that breathes with its own pulse: melodic yet crushing, introspective yet vast, bleak yet strangely beautiful.

Across its tracks, “Endless Nights” weaves powerful growls, mournful guitar leads, pounding rhythms, and spectral keyboards into a cohesive whole that pays homage to genre titans like Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, Katatonia, and Amorphis – while carving out an identity all its own.

The album was recorded by Marco Angioni (Tygers of Pan Tang, Thorium) at Angioni Studios, and mixed and mastered by Tue Madsen at the renowned Antfarm Studios (Moonspell, The Haunted, Baest). The result is a deep, enveloping production that enhances both the weight and nuance of Empire Drowns’ sound.

“While the music retains a core of Scandinavian winter and grey skies, “Endless Nights” was forged not only in Denmark, but also in the vibrant heart of East Africa – a region of majestic landscapes and rich cultures, scorching sun, devastating cycles of drought and flood, profound political tumult, unforgiving poverty and deep resilience”, the band states. “The album’s inspiration is a paradox born of the extremes that shape these vastly different worlds, it stands as a powerful sonic reflection of life’s relentless contrasts”.

Looking ahead, Empire Drowns will take “Endless Nights” to the stage in 2026, with live performances that promise to channel the album’s emotional depth and sonic weight into an immersive concert experience. This is not a studio project or a fleeting collaboration; this is a real band, committed to the long haul, ready to connect with audiences and make their mark on stages across Europe and beyond.

“Endless Nights” will be released on LP (grey vinyl, limited to 150 copies), CD and digital on 31.10.2025, via Mighty Music.

“Endless Nights” tracklist:

1. Volcanic Funeral
2. A Choir Of Fallen Angels

COLD IN BERLIN Release New Music Video ‘The Stranger’

With their most ambitious album “Wounds“, COLD IN BERLIN expand their DOOM GOTH ROCK sound further – bringing in synths, free-jazz brass, and off-kilter rhythms.

Following their promising first single “Hangman’s Daughter”, released on September 5, the British band is now back with more: their new and second single “The Stranger” is now available to stream and. The band presents epic sci-fi synthesizers in this track!

🎥 🎬 ⚙️ Composition & Production: Cold In Berlin

Singer Maya shared:
“‘The Stranger‘ is a song that is meant to allow for multiple interpretations … perhaps it is a song about addiction- the wound that doesn’t heal. The way the focus of an addiction sings to you, searching you out, twisting and flowing through the body- whispering beneath the skin until you answer the call and find home once more.

Perhaps it is a song about finding your place in the world- groups of people watching and experiencing something meaningful together- a way to heal and close old wounds. How live music can stay with you even as you are separated from it. How finding the strange songs, sang in dark places can actually bring you home to yourself.

Or perhaps it is a song about that sharp kind of love at first sight that can overwhelm, offering freedom and constraint all at once. When you are drawn to that person that you know can destroy you, but you cease to matter because they are somehow instantly your home and only resting place.

‘The Stranger‘ can be all these things- a healer, a cage, an addiction, but it is most definitely a call into the darkness, reaching out to the listener to join us in the howl of life, to wake up the bones and the skin. Be with us in the noise and know that whatever it is that led you to us, we are grateful you are home.”

COLD IN BERLIN emerged from East London’s gothic underground in 2010, evolving into one of the UK’s most revered live acts. Blending dark Post-Punk, Doom, and Krautrock with Maya’s fierce, commanding vocals, their sound balances raw power with haunting beauty. Debut album “Give Me Walls” (2010) made waves with Artrocker Album of the Year, followed by acclaimed releases on Candlelight Records and New Heavy Sounds. [ … learn more here ]

FALLING INTO VIEW to Release New Single ‘Things (that I thought might one day be useful)’ on October 24th

Posted by tarjavirmakari on October 11, 2025

Recently being announced as a BBC Introducing Hereford & Worcester Featured Artist, just six months into their story as a band, and having received radio airplay across multiple stations, Falling into View are delighted to be able to bring you their next single. After the successful release and reviews of their first two singles “What is it like to Lose?” and “On with the Show”, Falling into View are very proud to release their third single “Things (that I thought might one day be useful)”.

As with their previous singles, “Things” (due for release on 24th October) has already received BBC Introducing airplay and is a crowd favourite at their live shows, often stopping people in their tracks and silencing the room as Lyss and Allan perform this song in a stripped back way. Written and composed by prolific songwriter Allan, this track came together in just thirty minutes whilst Allan was packing up boxes and preparing to move house after it had been the family home for many years, although turning it into a breakup song gave it a bit of a twist!

He goes on to write that everyone has that drawer or cupboard shelf full of precious, sentimental things gathered across the years and it is often lovely to rediscover them and occasionally, just occasionally, they may one day be useful!

Allan states: “We’ve heard it said many times that some of the best songs are conceived and written in a matter of moments and this song was certainly one of those.
I recently moved house and whilst emptying drawer in an old cabinet I was struck by the amount of stuff it contained and why on earth we thought any of it would ever come in useful!
It was later that day when the thought struck me that this experience was a kind of metaphor for the way in which we bank memories. How we use them to look back fondly over the path our journey has taken or conversely, use the more painful ones to remind us not to take that pathway again!
So I sat down and wrote this song. In a matter of thirty minutes, I had the main body of the song and the melody. I took it to rehearsal and played it to the rest of the band and was struck by the stunned silence which greeted the final chords!
Imagine my relief when they all said they loved it! After talking over with Lyss we decided that it needed another verse to complete the story and so I went home that evening and wrote the last verse.
We all love this song, and we know how it affects people we play it to as they greet it with the same moment of stunned silence before the applause, it’s that split second that tells you the words you have written have resonated.”

Once again recorded at Magic Garden Studios in the West Midlands and produced by multi-platinum and BMA award winner Gavin Monaghan, this song will appeal to lovers of Americana, Country and Pop. Receiving fantastic reviews across their early live shows, Falling into View blend the best of Country and Americana with an unashamed nod to Pop, delivering a sound that will resonate with fans of multiple artists and genres.

Quotes from recent reviews of the first single “What is it like to Lose?”:
“Falling into View nail the Country-Pop sweetspot”
“Let’s get straight to it, Alyssa is the wildcard. Her vocals are the kind that stop you in your tracks”
“Falling into View arrive fully formed, blending classic sounds with a fresh edge and fronted by a vocalist who truly stands apart”
Quotes from recent reviews of the second single “On with the Show”:
“Longtime fans will know Alyssa as the voice that can stop you mid-conversation soulful, sweet, but full of grit when it needs to be”
“The sound they’re crafting feels far bigger than their roots. With On With the Show, they’ve proven they can produce tracks that hold their own against national and even international peers”
“There’s no ceiling here. Falling into View have tapped into something that resonates beyond genre boundaries”
“They are very good at transforming such profound meaning into songs and turning those emotions into anthems”

Singer Alyssa has previously made waves as a BBC Introducing featured artist. Allan, the band’s chief songwriter, carries the torch as its most seasoned musician, having also played alongside drummer Gordon in previous band The Idle Quiet. After that band’s chapter closed, Gordon suggested Alyssa take the microphone for a new project, bringing ex work colleague, and long-term friend, Rob on board to play bass. Lead guitarist and former bandmate of Rob, Bernie joined soon after, completing a lineup that came together as if it were meant to be, with everything “Falling into View” nicely!

With a rich mix of influences and an undeniable chemistry and an ability to not take itself too seriously, Falling into View is ready to make its mark—one song at a time.

25th Oct, The Dragonffli, Pontypool
20th Dec, The Globe, Hay On Wye

Alyssa Wint (vocals and acoustic guitar)
Allan Price (rhythm guitar)
