Beyond Seventh Dimension is an atmospheric metal project from Finland that started as a one-man instrumental project in 2025 and quickly escalated. Vocals were added to the concept right after the first song, and suddenly there was talk of an EP or a full-length album. Now there is an album, and there has also been talk of making a proper band out of this at some point, but time will tell.
Wailin Storms are catching fire with noisy and bluesy explosions of Southern Gothic Rock. Like moths to a flame, critics are mesmerized by the Durham, North Carolina band’s new album, The Arsonist.

Filmed in one take and recorded live with no editing inside an old church, the gothic ballad “It’s All Dark Now Where Your Eyes Used To Be” will haunt you to the grave.
”’It’s All Dark Now Where Your Eyes Used To Be” is about coming to terms with the realization that death comes for us all”, Wailin Storms vocalist and guitarist Justin Storms says. “I started writing this song when I was in Belgium, after I saw an old church that looked like a skull. It’s the last song on The Arsonist and is very spare and sad, but there’s also a sliver of hope. Life is temporary and that’s where its beauty lies”.

Since migrating to North Carolina’s inland coast circa 2014, Wailin Storms have caught fire with noisy, bluesy explosions of Southern gothic rock. Hot on the heels of critical high praise and thunderous applause from crowds on both sides of the Atlantic, the band’s fifth album and first for Season of Mist fans their flames with reckless abandon. While surrounded by darkness from the outside world, The Arsonist burns with all of our heart’s desires.
“I’ve always been fascinated by fire”, Wailin Storms vocalist and guitarist Justin Storms says before alluding to a time when he came dangerously close to accidentally burning his family’s house down. “It speaks to our inherent attraction to danger and annihilation, but also, our hope for transformation”.
Born the son of a church pianist and Baptist preacher, Justin Storms converted to the church of rock ‘n’ roll after listening to the teachings of his older brother. “He was responsible for getting me into outsider music”. After forming Wailin Storms in his home state of Texas and a pass through New York City, Storms hunkered down in Durham, North Carolina, where he was joined in 2014 by the band’s current drummer Mark Oates (Bats & Mice) and bassist Steve Stanczyk.
Debut full-length One Foot in the Flesh Grave laid a solid foundation for Wailin Storms in 2015 with an East Coast and Midwest tour that led to their first appearance at The Fest. 2017 follow-up Sick City infected more ears with coverage spreading from CVLT Nation to NPR. It was their third album, though, that really opened the floodgates. Rattle was featured by The Needle Drop and named one of the best albums of 2020 by Treble, Riff Magazine, Angry Metal Guy and Machine Music. More attention from Decibel and Metal Hammer came two years later around The Silver Snake Unfolds, which was followed by the arrival of guitarist Ben Melton, as well as shows and tour dates with everyone from City of Caterpillar, pageninetynine and This Will Destroy You to Acid Bath, Eyehategod and Young Widows.
“If Bauhaus, Killing Joke, and Black Sabbath had a child, this would be it”, Metal Injection proclaimed about Wailin Storms.
Brooklyn Vegan concurred. “It’s just loud, heavy, dark rock music, and it’s awesome”.
The Arsonist can be traced back through Wailin Storms’ past. Recorded by Matt Talbott of Hum in full analog, the album rekindles the band’s roots in raw-to-the-bone blues punk as a heated response to today’s vat of overproduced music and AI slop. By experimenting with swoons of Rhodes organ, “Heart of Mine” recalls the Roadhouse from Twin Peaks. “Some of these songs are more primitive and stripped down, harkening back to the four-track recordings that the band started with”, Storms says. “The recordings contain flaws but remain human in all the right ways. They could be a murder ballad or an old folk song that’s sung around the campfire”. Other early influences soak into the songwriting’s weathered fabric: Flannery O’Conner’s grotesque sensibility, Cormac McCarthy’s unflinching fatalism, Old Regular Baptist hymns. With its sideways gust of riffs and moaning chorus, “The Wind” blows loud enough to wake the entire cemetery.
“Because the heart wants what the body wants and the mind wants what the eyes want”, Storms gravely intones. “Won’t you take me through hell”.
Wailin Storms throw heavy splashes of surrealism into the fires of The Arsonist. “Many of the lyrics draw from the same imagery and emotions conjured by David Lynch, especially his film Wild at Heart”,Storms says. “Dead End” opens the album by taking a harrowing turn of its own when the drum’s rattle leads straight into a waking nightmare. “Calm night / Birds keep plucking out our eyes”.
While shrouded by a doomy and dreamy atmosphere, The Arsonist is inflamed by real life anxieties. Taking inspiration from René Magritte, the album’s cover art, which is heavily shadowed except for a tiny house gone up in flames, was painted by Storms himself. “These songs are steeped in the trials and tribulations of everyday life”, he says. The title track is slowly engulfed by love’s eternal flame. “Like the wind controls the sea”, he croons over the gentle sway of his guitar. “You always had a hold on me”. The thunderous climax surges with such feverish intensity that it threatens to send the night of passion up in smoke.
Amidst the wreckage of The Arsonist, Wailin Storms do find a semblance of peace. “It’s All Dark Now Where Your Eyes Used to Be” ends the album with a ghostly flicker of gothic romance. “I know a place where we can sit and grow old”, Storms offers with grim assurance. A piano tolls like death’s bell as he glimpses up at a church that resembles a skull. “There’s a sliver of hope in coming to terms with death”, he concludes. “Life is temporary and that’s where its beauty lies”.

“‘Psyclops’ was the final song completed for our newest self-titled offering. It was part of the last batch of music completed with Jeremy Von Epp & myself on the home stretch of our writing sessions & it came together quickly. The song itself is a hypnotizing stomper. Heavy footed like millions of people marching against how things stand in the status quo. Norman’s lyrics for ‘Psyclops’ should be left to the interpretation of the listeners. The chorus paints a vivid picture…’Forsaken, fast asleep and trapped inside a maze, Complacent eyes securely locked in an obscure gaze.’”

About FORBIDDEN: Formed in 1985 in Fremont, California as Forbidden Evil, FORBIDDEN quickly became one of the defining bands of the Bay Area thrash metal movement alongside the genre’s biggest names. Following lineup changes that solidified the classic lineup featuring vocalist Russ Anderson, guitarists Craig Locicero and Glen Alvelais, bassist Matt Camacho and drummer Paul Bostaph, the band released their landmark 1988 debut ‘Forbidden Evil’ before shortening their name to FORBIDDEN. Acclaimed follow-up albums ‘Twisted Into Form’ (1990), ‘Distortion’ (1994), and ‘Green’ (1997) showcased the band’s technical precision, melodic songwriting, and Anderson’s unmistakable vocals, while extensive tours with acts including Sacred Reich, Exodus, Death Angel, Testament, and Malevolent Creation helped cement their reputation as one of thrash’s most respected acts. The revitalized lineup made its live debut at Belgium’s Alcatraz Metal Festival before returning home for sold-out Bay Area performances supporting Death Angel’s annual Christmas shows. Italian death metal force GORGE have unveiled “Without Inheritance”, the second single taken from their forthcoming debut full-length “Deeds of Horror”, due out on August 27, 2026 via Time To Kill Records.
Showcasing another facet of the band’s songwriting, the new track highlights GORGE‘s ability to balance crushing aggression with sharp rhythmic interplay, combining hard-hitting grooves, constantly shifting dynamics and a wide-ranging riff vocabulary.
Rather than relying on sheer speed alone, “Without Inheritance” builds its impact through diversity, offering a compelling preview of an album that aims to merge classic death metal ferocity with a confident, modern sense of groove and songwriting precision.
“When we wrote ‘Without Inheritance’, we wanted to create a song that was fast and violent, but also highly physical. We liked the idea of blending brutal death metal with the energy of hardcore, adding grooves that could hit with immediate impact. The lyrics stem from a rather bitter reflection: what is left in the end if you’ve spent your entire life chasing work, money or success while neglecting the people who were always by your side? It’s about the fear of realizing that only when it’s too late, finding yourself alone and having left behind nothing that truly matters.”

Formed in 2025 by Edoardo Nicoloso (Fulci, Jorelia, TV-Crimes) and Roberto Sava (Jorelia), GORGE were created with the intent of exploring death metal in its most direct and uncompromising form, drawing inspiration from the raw energy of the genre’s foundational years while developing a personal and dynamic approach.
The band’s approach is rooted in a direct, riff-driven philosophy that draws heavily from the foundational era of Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Gorguts and Malevolent Creation, updated with just the right amount of modern weight without compromising its original identity. GORGE blends death metal with a gritty hardcore sensibility, resulting in a groovy yet ferocious sound that avoids overused slam dynamics in favour of tighter songwriting and internal rhythmic variation. At the centre of everything lies the riff, treated as the primary narrative force across all compositions, supported by a constant attention to structural tension and release.
ROTTING CHRIST are announcing the reissue of Sanctus Diavolos. Originally released through Century Media in September 2004, the Greek legends’ eighth full-length is the final pillar from their gothic period and one of the band’s most extreme and cohesive albums.
Season of Mist will reissue Sanctus Diavolos on black and colored vinyl on September 11, 2026.
Sanctus Diavolos was the first album Rotting Christ frontman Sakis Tolis wrote after the departures of the band’s longtime guitarist Costas Vasilakopoulos and keyboardist Georgios Tolias. Sakis absorbed both roles himself, handling guitars, keys and vocals alongside his brother Themis Tolis on drums and Andreas Lagios on bass. Across ten songs, the album moves from the aggression of opener “Visions of a Blind Order” through mid-tempo, riff-driven black and gothic metal, pausing at the string-and-choir interlude “Sanctimonious,” before closing on the sprawling, choir-drenched title track.
Thematically, Sanctus Diavolos frames its central figure as Lucifer the light-bearer, a seductive, welcoming presence. This distinction sets it apart from the band’s earlier work and from most of the genre’s stock devil-worship posturing. Symphonic and choral writing plays a larger role here than on any previous Rotting Christ album. “Visions of a Blind Order” features a guest solo from Gus G and choir arrangements by Christos Antoniou of Septicflesh, which were performed live by an eight-person choir.
Sanctus Diavolos was recorded at SCA Studios in Athens and mixed by Fredrik Nordström at Studio Fredman in Sweden.

“Empty” is a bit of a change of pace for Afterlife, as the band veered off course when it came to songwriting — and to excellent results.
“‘Empty’ navigates the reality of a devastating heartbreak, exploring the weight of emotional emptiness and mental exhaustion,” says Levenson. “For me, it’s one of the most vulnerable songs on the album, born from a collection of unfortunate experiences woven into one tragic outcome. The emotional honesty guided not only the lyrics but also the sound of the track. During this song’s creation, we wanted the atmosphere to match the moodiness of the lyrics, allowing us to create a unique sonic landscape, setting the song apart on the album… When writing this song, I knew that the only way to truly express the song’s emotions was through singing them, making ‘Empty’ the first Afterlife track without screaming or rapping.”
The album is a critical creation for the band.

“The Pain That Shapes Us is the album that the band needed to write,” Levenson says. “We pulled the curtain back more than ever, revealing the rawest, most honest, and vulnerable sides of who we are as a group and what we’ve been through. It’s a reminder that our struggles, while painful, are also what makes us who we are.”
Afterlife recorded the album with producers Zach Jones [Crown The Empire, Nothing More, We Came As Romans, Pop Evil] and Austin Coupe [Papa Roach, The Devil Wears Prada, Thousand Below, Moodring].
Upon solidifying their lineup back in the 2017, the members of Afterlife bonded over influences like Slipknot, Linkin Park, and Papa Roach as they cultivated their own sound. As a unit, they locked into a groove and dropped the Vicious Cycle EP that same year. Speaking to the excitement around the band, they sold out their very first headline gig: the EP’s release show. Catalyzing their momentum, they hit the studio with producer Zakk Cervini [Bring Me The Horizon, Bad Omens, Poppy] and dropped their debut album Breaking Point during 2019.
Pushing forward, they evolved once again with the full-length Part of Me [2021]. In 2024, the band independently released their smashing single “Bleed You Dry,” opening the door to a surge virality on TikTok. Afterlife premiered the song live for the first time ever at Welcome To Rockville, and it remains a live staple. Moreover, “Bleed You Dry” quickly piled up north of 15 million collective streams and views.
Renowned for explosive live shows, witnessing one gig was all it took for Mascot Records to sign them in 2025. Shortly after inking their deal, the group hit the studio and the result is The Pain That Shapes Us.
