San Francisco Bay Area thrash veterans DEATH ANGEL, have released the first of two video trailers teasing their upcoming DVD + live album release, a thrashumentary. Check it out below.

The a thrashumentary DVD release was directed, shot and edited by Tommy Jones (KATAKLYSM, SOILWORK, LAMB OF GOD, CARCASS, TESTAMENT) of Videohammer Studios will be released July 24th via Nuclear Blast Records. The release will include a bonus full live album entitled The Bay Calls for Blood – Live in San Francisco.

The Bay Calls for Blood – Live in San Francisco will also be sold as a vinyl LP exclusively through Nuclear Blast mail-order and will be made available in the digital format as well. Artwork for the LP version was created by Joey James Hernandez.

Not every band can rise up to be musical legends, but every once in a while a group is able to exceed all expectations and define the boundaries of a genre. Seven albums into their career and DEATH ANGEL has never been stronger or more vital to the scene. Among one of the youngest bands ever to storm the metal world, DEATH ANGEL have come to be known as one of the most influential bands to emerge from the 80s Bay Area Thrash Metal scene. The Dream Calls For Blood, the band’s seventh studio album, sold 5,400 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 72 on The Billboard 200 chart. This makes it the band’s highest charting record since their reformation in 2004! In contrast the group’s previous CD, Relentless Retribution, opened with 2,700 units in September 2010 and came in at No. 188.

“What originally started out as a live music video for ‘River of Rapture’ in 2010, has evolved into a full scale historical documentary on the band and the thrash scene. This is the first time the band in its current lineup has been able to collectively sit down, and tell the story of how DEATH ANGEL came to be Mark, Rob, Ted, Will and Damien. Mixed with live footage I shot in The Philippines, Asia, Germany, Europe and North America, this project was a blast to produce. It became a true evolution from what we originally set out to do, while solidifying a lifelong friendship. I can’t wait for the DEATH ANGEL fans worldwide to be able to sit back and throw on a thrashumentary and hear/see the bands story straight from their mouths. It’s a project I’m very proud of. It’s also something I would have never envisioned doing when I was a kid taking my guitar to my teacher to learn the solo of ‘Bored’! Thrash on!“

San Francisco Bay Area metallers DEATH ANGEL have begun demoing material for the follow-up to 2010’s “Relentless Retribution”. The band is currently recording drums and guitars. A photo from the sessions can be seen below.

“Relentless Retribution” sold 2,700 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at position No. 10 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200. The band’s previous album, “Killing Season”, opened with around 2,300 units back in March 2008. This number was in line with the performance of its predecessor, “The Art of Dying”, which registered a first-week sales tally of around 2,100 back in May 2004.

“Relentless Retribution” was released in the U.S. on September 14, 2010 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD was recorded at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida with producer Jason Suecof (TRIVIUM, AUGUST BURNS RED, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, ALL THAT REMAINS, WHITECHAPEL, DEVILDRIVER). The cover artwork was created by Brent Elliot White (JOB FOR A COWBOY, CARNIFEX, WHITECHAPEL).

DEATH ANGEL‘s long-awaited DVD, “A Thrashumentary”, will be released later in the year. Guitarist Ted Aguilar recently stated about the set, “It’s gonna cover the history of DEATH ANGEL from the very beginning all the way up to the current version of DEATH ANGEL now. It’s gonna be jam-packed with a lot of old footage, stuff from early D.A., even their side projects after D.A., when D.A. broke up and THE ORGANIZATION formed, and the reformation of the band [for an appearance at] Thrash Of The Titans [festival in 2001].”

According to a press release, “A Thrashumentary” is a combination live video and documentary, all wrapped up in one thrashing DVD. The footage was directed by Tommy Jones (SOILWORK, KATAKLYSM) and mixed by Chris Clancy of The Studio. The film gives the viewer an in-depth look into one of the longest-running thrash acts out of the San Francisco Bay Area, a region known for turning out historic thrash bands such as METALLICA, TESTAMENT and EXODUS.
