According to Ronan McGreevy of The Irish Times, an early version of AC/DC‘s “Thunderstruck” and a recording of METALLICA performing with Marianne Faithfull are among the mountain of tapes from the old Windmill Lane recording studios in Ireland that are waiting to be reclaimed by the artists or recording companies that recorded them.
More than 1,000 tapes, weighing a ton, are filling up the attic in the new Windmill Lane studios in Ringsend.
If the two-inch multitrack tapes — which were used in the days before digital technology took over the studios in the middle of the last decade — are not reclaimed by May, they will be destroyed.
“Anthems”, ANTHRAX‘s long-awaited, eight-track EP that pays tribute to the classic songs by some of the band’s favorite acts from the 1970s, will be released in North America on March 19 (MRI/Megaforce), and on March 22 in Europe (Nuclear Blast).
ANTHRAX‘s cover of AC/DC‘s “TNT” can be streamed using the SoundCloud player below.
Speaking to Music Radar, ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante stated about the decision to cover “TNT”: “This was Joey‘s [Belladonna, vocals] track. We already had ‘Whole Lotta Rosie’ recorded, but he wanted ‘TNT’. I can see why: his voice totally lends itself to this track.
“AC/DC is probably one of the greatest bands ever. The came in with a certain sound, and they’ll end with that same exact sound. They never altered it; they just stayed true to what they were. To me, that’s an honest-to-goodness rock ‘n’ roll band.
“It would have been obvious to pick something off of ‘Highway To Hell’ or ‘Back In Black’, and so we didn’t. [laughs] I studied every Phil Rudd lick, and I did not go overboard with anything. I played exactly what he played on ‘TNT’. You can’t do a fast drum fill on the song — it’ll stand out as being out of place. I laid it down, pulled it back, and that was that.”
The “Anthems” EP will be available on CD as well as digitally via iTunes and other online retailers. In addition to “Anthems”‘ cover art, Benante and artist Stephen Thompson have subtly redesigned each track’s original album cover art to “Anthrax” it. The “Anthems” EP will first be housed in one of the “re-imagined” digipak covers, and then inserted inside the main CD cover sleeve. The main cover sleeve has been designed in such a way so fans will be able to see which one of the six “re-imagined” covers is inside.
“Anthems” was produced by ANTHRAX, Jay Ruston and Rob Caggiano and recorded for the most part throughout 2012 literally all over the world: at Benante‘s home studio, in Ruston‘s New York studio, on the band’s tour bus while on last summer’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, in hotel rooms, and backstage at their Berlin show last December.
The Grammy-nominated ANTHRAX has just hit the road in support “Anthems” with dates in Australia, and will return to North America to headline the Metal Alliance Tour that kicks off March 22. For all of these dates, ANTHRAX is being joined by SHADOWS FALL guitarist Jon Donais.
As if he isn’t busy enough around the world with sold-out shows in Brazil, Europe, Russia and USA, former AC/DC drummer Chris Slade has launched a new band THE CHRIS SLADE TIMELINE to mark 50 years as a professional rock musician.
The band is set to tour Europe throughout 2013 and beyond, with dates being added all the time. For this new project, Slade has taken on board supreme bassist Chris Glen, formerly a member of THE SENSATIONAL ALEX HARVEY BAND and MSG and more recently his fellow bandmember in the MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP. Also joining Slade, from Holland, is Leon Geowie, the dynamic vocalist of Dutch band VENGEANCE and Slade‘s other band STEEL CIRCLE. The linup is rounded out by phenomenal vocalist Steve Glasscock, guitarist James Cornford and keyboard player Michael Clark.
This is a totally new concept for Slade, and as the band name suggests, will include performances from a varied set list from Tom Jones, MANFRED MANN’S EARTH BAND, URIAH HEEP, THE FIRM, ASIA, with a fair degree of AC/DC numbers and many surprises to be unwrapped along the way.
THE CHRIS SLADE TIMELINE begins the first leg of the U.K. tour in Cornwall at the end of March. Some dates confirmed at time of going to press are:
Mar. 27 – Carnglaze Caverns St. Neots Cornwall
Mar. 28 – The Walkabout Newquay Cornwall
Mar. 30 – Coop Sports Club, Sheerness, Kent
Mar. 31 – Club Luxor, Folkestone, Kent
Apr. 01 – The Half Moon, Putney, London
Apr. 02 – The Garage, Swansea, Wales
Apr. 04 – Oran Moir, Glasgow, Scotland
Slade received his highest exposure in 1989 when he was asked to join AC/DC as the replacement for Simon Wright. Slade played on the 1990 “Razor’s Edge” album and accompanying world tour and the “Big Gun” single, released in 1993. The Young brothers, however, asked Slade to leave after four years with the group and reinstated former drummer Phil Rudd, saying that Rudd had demonstrated a “groove” more fitting their style of rock.
Rock and roll “history” was made on January 14 as filmmaker J.R. Getches shot the first- ever dramatic portrayal footage of late AC/DC frontman Bon Scott, starring U.S. actor/singer Rob Liotti, in Charleston, South Carolina. This initial scene will serve as a teaser film and prelude to the upcoming trailer now greenlit and in pre-production. “Bon Scott – The Legend of AC/DC” was originally reported upon in August of 2012 and garnered viral worldwide attention.
Russell Cotter of High Voltage Productions Pty. and an Australian said: “The Bon Scott movie has got legs! Rob has worked tirelessly to get the movie off the ground and it has traction.
“More than 30 years after the death of AC/DC‘s legendary frontman, Rob has promoted the legacy of Bon Scott, the man, and has been able to pull together the story, the people, and the logistics of what will soon become a landmark movie. Fans around the world will finally get to see what they have long waited for.”
A confidential meeting was held in mid-November 2012 to solidify commencement of filming and involved key staff as well as key principal role actors. Also noteworthy is the fact that an agreement has been reached with Charleston Sound Studio, LLC in neighboring Mount Pleasant, South Carolina where the trailer’s theme song will be recorded. Owner and chief engineer Jeff Hodges has been tasked with capturing the all-important track. The studio has been utilized by stars such as multi-platinum artist Darius Rucker and noted Nashville producer Frank Rogers.
While there has been much speculation over the casting of roles within the project, radio interviews with the film’s star (both in Australia and the United States) have given indication that some preliminary casting has been accomplished for the trailer. It has been learned that besides the principal role Liotti holds as Bon Scott, the roles of Malcolm Young, Angus Young, Mark Evans, Phil Rudd and Margaret “Silver” Smith have been cast thus far. In preparation for shooting, the film’s star took on a serious physical regimen dropping some 40 lbs. in preparation for the role.
Director J.R. Getches added: “The story of Bon Scott is a classical tragedy. He travelled across the world, made his mark, and then died too young. He was a misfit who found his place in rock music and became immortal pursuing his dream. This is a story worth telling.”
The associate production company High Voltage Productions Pty. is seeking an independent production house and is said to be waiting for the right fit and vision. But they have pledged that the film’s trailer will serve as a vehicle for fundraising and an instrument to give visual perpetuity to the investment interests at-large, as well as the public.
According to Gizmodo.com, AC/DC‘s music is part of an unnamed drone operation and will serve as a sort of testing mechanism for the drone while it is in flight. The song “Highway To Hell”, which was chosen by one of the drone’s developers, will travel on a laser beam that’s being bounced off a drone. The beam is reflected to a sensor located on the ground, and the music is reconstructed. A laser beam passes through a light modulator, adding digital zeroes and ones to the beam, at which point the light hits a mirror and is reflected back to its original spot while carrying the data.
Yoann Thueux of Innovation Works in Newport, U.K., who picked “Highway To Hell”, said about her selection: “It was on my iPod and I thought it would be a good song to go first because I know it completely by heart. I’d be the first to tell if the technology was not working properly on playback.”
