Finland’s SINISTHRA have signed with Italian label Rockshots Records for the release of their album, “The Broad and Beaten Way”. Best described as sadness tinged with despair and hope, the new album encapsulates raw emotion set against heavy and brooding music.
This album comes 15 years after the debut record “Last of the Stories of Long Past Glories”, and its manifestation has been a slow and arduous process. The songs were written ages ago while other projects, primarily vocalist Tomi Joutsen’s presence in Amorphis, were given priority from the band members.
Guitarist Markku Mäkinen writes the majority of the music for the highly elusive band whose original and complex sound has often been mislabeled. The band explains the evolution of their music:
“We all had a history in thrash and death metal bands, but when the band originally came together in 2000, there was not much metal at all in the sound, it was leaning more towards grunge and at times trip-hop. After the first album in 2005, the sound took a lot more metallic turn and something came in from 70’s prog as well. Metal genres are irrelevant to us.”
The name for the album comes from “Paradise Lost” by John Milton; “The Broad and Beaten Way” is a bridge from Hell to Earth with the lyrics taking inspiration from the fall of man and from leading a chaotic and self-destructive modern day life and trying to find solid ground and perhaps even some peace of mind. “Eterne” is the first song, where the metaphorical Adam and Eve are expelled, both from Eden and from their union, and in the last song “Ephemeral” Adam, solitary, finally accepts his past actions as futile.
The melancholic sojourn, suitable for fans of Katatonia, Anathema, and Amorphis will be available in May 2020.

Big news for AMORPHIS: The latest release from the Melancholic Progessive Metal band reached gold status in their home country! “Queen Of Time” has officially sold more than 10.000 units in Finland.
The award marks a milestone of the band’s latest album of AMORPHIS. Released on 18th May 2018, “Queen Of Time” reached numerous great chart results including the best German chart position in the band’s history (#4).
Esa Holopainen about the award: “It’s pretty tricky to sell lots of albums these days when people are used to listening to random songs from streaming platforms. So it’s a great honor to have achieved gold on an album that we put a lot of effort and time into. A big thanks goes to our producer Jens Bogren, our lyricist Pekka Kainulainen, our visual artist Jean ‘Valnoir’ Simoulin, our management Grey Beard and label Nuclear Blast plus every single soul that worked for ‘Queen Of Time’. Nevertheless, biggest hugs to our loyal fans as ‘Queen Of Time’ was the most selling physical album in Finland in 2018. It has also streamed extremely well so we salute you!”
Though, the success is no reason for AMORPHIS to slow down: Together with their label mates, the epic masters of symphonic black metal DIMMU BORGIR and blackened ambient metal heroes WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM will invade Europe for a big European tour in winter 2020. Tickets are on sale now.

The year 2020 is set to start with a roll of thunder! Today, the Norwegian black metal force DIMMU BORGIR and Finnish melodic prog metallers AMORPHIS announce a co-headline tour that no metal fan should miss. In January and February of 2020, the unholy Scandinavian alliance will haunt 10 European cities and bring the American post black metallers WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM along as support.
DIMMU BORGIR commented: “We’re going to crush Europe in January next year, and together with AMORPHIS, we’ll make sure that Nordic darkness will create a perfect winter’s storm. See you all soon!”
AMORPHIS‘ Esa Holopainen stated: “When the idea of doing a co-headline tour with DIMMU BORGIR came up, it sounded great, but at the same time we were really surprised. However the more we thought about it, the more it sounded like a perfect match. Musically we are different, but deep down, it’s not really by that much. There’s a lot of similar elements where both bands take their inspiration. Both bands are absolutely unique on stage. It is needless to say that this tour is going to be a true killer with a massive production, that will undoubtedly bring even more coldness into people’s hearts in January 2020. We would also like to welcome WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM to open the evenings.”
WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM added: “We are ready to blaze forth across Europe with these two titans of Heavy Metal! DIMMU BORGIR and AMORPHIS are bands that we love and we are looking forward to supporting them on this tour. We will be playing songs off our new album (released by Century Media in February) as well as some classic WOLVES material. Thank you!”
See the bands on one of the following exclusive tour dates. Tickets go on sale on August 14th at 10:00 CEST.

DIMMU BORGIR‘s monumental 10th studio album, “Eonian” was released right in time for the band’s 25th anniversary last year, about seven years after its predecessor, “Abrahadabra”. Since then, the infernal trio consisting of Shagrath, Silenoz and Galder has played various tours all around the world, including shows at leading metal festivals such as Wacken and Hellfest.
AMORPHIS have also been busy touring last year after the release of their 13th studio album “Queen Of Time”, that further established the band’s reputation as one of today’s leading Finnish metal acts. With their complex and original blend of folk and metal elements, a well-balanced interplay of clear vocals and harsh growls, the band is even said to have invented their own genre.
ALPHA OMEGA Management has a huge pleasure to announce that the Dark/Gothic Metallers ANIMAE SILENTES are confirmed, as main support, for Finnish melancholic progressive metal masters AMORPHIS on their “Queen of Time Tour 2019” in Moscow and St.Petersburg. See the details below.
March 15th – Glav Club – Moscow
March 16th – Club Zal – St.Petersburg
Italian Dark/Gothic metal act ANIMAE SILENTES was formed in June 2015. In February 2017 the band released the debut album “Suffocated” as independent and immediately began promoting the album with a series of live shows, mainly in Northern Italy. Among the live experiences, the band shared the stage with names like Lacrimas Profundere at “Venice Vampire Fest” and also Votum and Swallow The Sun at “Metal Gates Festival” in Romania in November 2017. In the summer 2017 Animae Silentes sign a record contract with the label Sliptrick Records for the reprint and promotion of Suffocated and made it’s first foreign experience with a mini tour in Latvia.

Finnish melancholic progressive metallers AMORPHIS released their enormously successful new album »Queen Of Time«, on May 18th, 2018 through Nuclear Blast. To present their new hymns live on stage, the band is pleased to announce that they will join forces with visionary Swedish metallers SOILWORK for a European co-headline run in early 2019. The band is currently working hard on the follow-up to 2015’s hit album »The Ride Majestic« (Nuclear Blast). The trek will mark SOILWORK‘s first tour in support of their new record. As if this package wasn’t great enough, these headliners will be supported by Ukrainian modern metal outfit JINJER plus German melodic death/doom metallers NAILED TO OBSCURITY, who are working on their Nuclear Blast debut.
AMORPHIS guitarist Esa Holopainen commented, “We can’t wait to hit the European roads and take the AMORPHIS live production to the next level with the »Queen Of Time« tour. We are really happy to bring the mighty SOILWORK, JINJER and NAILED TO OBSCURITY to this tour as well. Get your tickets now, it’s gonna be a blast from the past!”
Added SOILWORK vocalist Björn “Speed” Strid, “We are very excited about touring with AMORPHIS, as the first tour for our upcoming album. AMORPHIS have been my favorite Finnish band since I was a teenager, when »Tales From The Thousand Lakes« was my daily soundtrack. Both of the bands’ unique take on metal, will create an epic cocktail, as we roll through Europe on tour together. It’s about time, I can’t wait!”
JINJER stated, “We are absolutely thrilled and honored to tour alongside two metal giants such as AMORPHIS and SOILWORK, it’s almost too good to be true! We’ll be bringing our A game and playing some new material as well. Europe, get ready because 2019 is going to get loud!”
NTO guitarist Jan-Ole Lamberti said, “We can’t wait to get back on the road again and we are very excited to be a part of this killer tour package. We are looking forward to seeing familiar faces at cities and venues that we’ve already played in the past, but also to meeting lots of new people at places and even countries we haven’t been to yet. This is going to be great!”
It’s always a pleasure to sit and have a chat with a metal friend, especially having had a chance to work with them. Niclas Etelävuori, an amazing bass player who has been in the heart of the rhythmic part of AMORPHIS music for seventeen years, is now busy with his new band FLAT EARTH. To know more about his past and present, I had an interview with Niclas from which an excerpt can be read below:
Perhaps you agree with me that mankind is a creature of habit and seventeen years is long enough to make it difficult for any person to change or want to try new things. So I asked Niclas how he feels about those years with AMORPHIS now?
– “It was great times, it was a huge part of my life. I mean I don’t know, sometimes you just have to move on. But I have good memories and bad memories, but mostly good memories.”
In April 2017, Niclas announced his departure from AMORPHIS via a post on Facebook, where he mentioned his decision as “the hardest decision he ever made”. I asked him about it and what exactly happened during that time which led him to make that decision;
– “It wasn’t a sudden decision, it’s been growing for many years probably, five or six years but then I don’t know. I felt like things were getting just worse and people didn’t stay to their words and you know, a lot of things didn’t match. So I don’t know, I’d just had enough. We had an agreement that we do changes but it never happened. So I thought ‘this will never happen, I have to do something else’. That’s basically it in a nutshell. But it’s very complicated and a long story, it would take a week to tell it. There’s some personalities, their egos go before other things.”
FLAT EARTH, why and how was it formed? Niclas responded:
– “After a couple of weeks sitting outside drinking beer, I had to do something. Then I had this one song and my Spanish friend Juan came by and ‘yeah yeah I wanna sing on that one’, so we released this one song in Spanish with him. But I knew I had a lot of songs on my hard drive and some of them were pretty old, so I didn’t even remember what I had done. So it took weeks to listen to all of that. Then later, I started to look for somebody to play with and then Linde came up through a common friend. I liked his style always and I knew that maybe he wasn’t going to do anything after HIM finished. So then I asked him over and he was right away into it. From there on we start to look for a singer and then I have forced almost Gas to be in the band, but now he’s really into it (laughs). But Gas and I go back, we knew each other almost thirty years now. It’s all good.”
If you know AMORPHIS and if you’ve checked the FLAT EARTH single, ‘Blame’, you will also have noticed the difference in the music. So let’s see what Niclas thinks about it:
– “I feel good about it. Actually now we can do whatever we want. So it would be pointless for me to play the same music that Amorphis is doing. This is our first album and there’s a lot of different music on it already. I’m very excited when we get to play more and compose the second one.”
I was curious about the band’s name, you might be too. So I asked Niclas and he answered:
– “It was kinda from many coincidences. We had a day planned to set the name for the band at Linde’s house and it was kind of our first get together. And we were to come up with a name and we cooked food and had drinks and stuff. Linde has four hairless cats and one of them passed on as soon as we got the dinner, from a heart attack. In the end we couldn’t come up with a name that day. The next morning, we thought we have to come up with something and we had a couple of names and Flat Earth came up. Then we somehow felt that we had to give tribute to the cat, because he lost his life when we were coming up with the name. Then we also heard a story that if the earth is flat, then all the cats would shove everything off it, so we had a lot of coincidences.”
