HELLOWEEN Singer ANDI DERIS’ Thoughts on Controversial “Chameleon” Album

Canada’s The Metal Voice recently interviewed Helloween singer Andi Deris. 
In the chat Deris talks about the bands upcoming studio album ‘Giants & Monsters which will be released  August 29, 2025 (Reigning Phoenix Music).

They also spoke about on how he joined the band and the bands musical evolution.

Excerpt from the interview
When asked about the Helloween’s Chameleon album prior to joining the band
“Guitarist Michael Weikath gave me the (Helloween) Chameleon album to listen to. I  went back to South Germany and listened to it and a day later he gave me a call and asked so what do you think ? Do you like it?  I said look, I think it’s fantastic for Bonjovi and then he hung up  and didn’t call for a week, (laughs). Hey I’m fan of Bon Jovi .I love a lot of Bon Jovi songs. I didn’t even mean it as a negative thing.  The music is great. I like Chameleon but it’s not Halloween. I told everybody If Bon Jovi  would have actually recorded this album it would have been a number one album. But fans who waited for a Halloween album I think they were shocked there was like nothing to do with Halloween anymore. Even Pink Bubbles has Halloweenish stuff on it but on the Chameleon it was eradicated.  If  not for the great voice of Michael (Kiske) you would have would have never realized or recognized that it’s Halloween, that’s my humble opinion.”

HelloweenAndiDerisThe pioneers of power metal HELLOWEEN are marking a huge milestone of their career in 2015 – it is three decades since their first release back in 1985, with the EP “Helloween”.

Of course, as with any band who has been around for that length of time, there have been changes in line-up, but the current one is pretty solid, proved by the last ten years together.

With such classics under their belts as “Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part I” and “Part II”, to the more recent “Straight Out Of Hell”, HELLOWEEN have always created the music they wanted, on their terms, whether it be longer concept type tracks or fun crowd pleasing songs, along with tackling some serious issues as well. Even if power metal isn’t your favourite genre, there’s no denying the constant quality and energy this band produce!

As HELLOWEEN prepare to release their 15th studio album “My God-Given Right” on 29th May in Europe via Nuclear Blast Records, Blackdiamond had an entertaining and informative chat with frontman Andi Deris.

Discussing HELLOWEEN‘s 30th anniversary, Andi expressed:

“Time flies you could say, 30 years is unbelievable! On the other hand, we’re still here and nearly having the third generation of fans in the audience, which is great. But at the same time it gives us lots of responsibility when it comes to new albums, to try and combine all the guys. You can’t be everyone’s darling, that’s quite clear. Nevertheless, we tried for the 30th anniversary – we tried to do an album which kind of leads you through three decades of Helloween metal and I think we succeeded.

Our producer Charlie did a great job on this one too because we wanted to have a little bit of a touch of the ’80’s, still being 2015.”

Andi revealed the story behind the title track ‘My God-Given Right’:

“‘My God-Given Right’ was actually from my father telling me on finishing school and I did not know what to do with my life. You have a big question mark over your head, what should you do? I definitely had that dream of making music like so many kids have, but I was very fortunate to have a father who completely backed me up. He said ‘you’re my only son – if I see you happy, you make me happy and it’s your God-given right to do what you want with your life, or at least give it a try. And whatever you do, I’m behind you.’

And my own son last year was more or less asking me the same question, so it went back to the days with my father. I told my son what his Grandfather told me and I thought it’s a beautiful title for a song.”

HELLOWEEN: In The Studio; Footage Available Online

German power metallers HELLOWEEN are back in their MiSueno recording studio, creating the follow up to 2012’s “Straight Out Of Hell”. The band have posted some footage online, showing vocalist Andi Deris introducing the video then showing drummer Dani Löble giving the fans a small demonstration. As always the HELLOWEEN sense of humour is present!

Andi Deris is a name that stands by itself. Being the lead singer of one of the greatest and most popular heavy metal bands worldwide, HELLOWEEN, there is not much too add when it comes to Andi Deris’ musical achievements. Now, Andi Deris returns with his first solo album since 1999. Not so much a solo effort in its original sense but recorded in a band envoirement to achieve a real band feeling. Million Dollar Haircuts On Ten Cent Heads will be released on November 22nd via earMUSIC.

Written and composed by Andi Deris himself, Million Dollar Haircuts On Ten Cent Heads has a crispy, modern sound to it. The diverse, high class production is snotty, dirty and brutally honest. A healthy mixture of the recent sounding Helloween records combined with Master Of The Rings tradition (Andi´s first Helloween fronted album) and it features some extra ordinary JIMI HENDRIX-like guitar sounds.

Recorded together with his band BAD BANKERS, Andi Deris criticises the grievances of the economic system and its corruption. Although the topic may seem a bit dull, the heavy guitar riffs and Andi Deris’ recognizable voice clearly make a point: “fuck banks, fuck managers, fuck bankers”.

Explains Andi Deris: “Obviously we despise everything around banks, managers and bankers who are clearly responsible for the shit that goes on nowadays (and most certainly in our future), so it felt very good to vocally tell them what we think about them. Sure, therefore it´s highly explicit but hey… who gives a f***. That’s what they deserve… and it helps the music to really kick some ass.” Who would have thought that a bank crisis could result in something like this?

HELLOWEEN Frontman Andi Deris Launches New Project ANDI DERIS & BAD BANKERS

According to Bravewords.com, HELLOWEEN frontman Andi Deris has recently revealed initial details of a brand new project, entitled ANDI DERIS & BAD BANKERS.

“It’s been years I was looking for a band (all over the planet) that I could actually ask to record an album with me, only to find it on the little island I live on just a few months ago. Even more thrilling is the fact that the guys are between 19 and 22 years old. You won¥t believe it when you listen to the songs!

Obviously we despise everything around banks, managers and bankers who are clearly responsible for the shit that goes on nowadays (and most certainly in our future), so it felt very good to vocally tell them what we think about them. HELLOWEEN, GAMMA RAY/Hellish Rock Tour Part II: Istanbul Show Cancelled

German power metallers HELLOWEEN have announced via their official website, that they have have had to cancel their upcoming show tomorrow (March 12th) in Istanbul, Turkey, as vocalist Andi Deris is ill:

“Due to illness of Andi we unfortunately have to cancel the Istanbul show. We feel very sorry for our Turkish fans!
We are looking forward to be able to continue the tour after that small break in Sofia on Friday.”

The band are touring with GAMMA RAY and have been touring since 28th February. They have taken Europe by storm, so far blasting Spain, Switzerland, Italy and Greece.
