ABOUT BAT: The power trio, including Ryan Waste, Nick Poulos, and Chris Marshall, decamped to Philadelphia in June 2021 where Arthur Rizk recorded the basic tracks for Under The Crooked Claw. Yavé Rust tracked lead guitars and vocals later when the band was back in Richmond, ultimately to be mixed by Rizk and mastered by Joel Grind. The artwork for the album was inked by Brandon Holt and colored by Margaret Rolicki. Jam-packed with tight, concise songs loaded with punchy choruses and lightning-laced leads, each of the 13 tracks offers a new horror short story mixing the perfect blend of heavy metal, punk, and rock ‘n’ roll or as Waste coins it “primitive heavy speed”.
Richmond, Virginia metal-punk trioBAT are ringing in Hallows Eve with the perfect onslaught of horror movies and speed metal. The track ‘Horror Vision‘ was taken from the band’s second full-length album Under The Crooked Claw via Nuclear Blast Records. The brainchild of MUNICIPAL WASTE guitarists Ryan Waste & Nick Poulos, BAT ascended from the underground a decade ago on a dark, leather-winged trajectory. The band delivers their own blood-spattered horrorleaning heavily on the dirtier side of speed metal.
The track features 20 of the ‘video nasty’ titles highlighted throughout the song along with other classic horror clips edited together by Jim Stramel and Ryan Waste.
Ryan Waste states, “I grew up watching horror movies at a young age, and just like with heavy metal, I became obsessed, delving deeper into the obscure. In the early 80s, UK starch conservative Mary Whitehouse spearheaded a campaign against certain films she deemed unsuitable for viewing at home and coined the term ‘video nasties’. There was an initial list of 72 ‘obscene’ films on VHS, so of course I had to hunt them down and watch all of them in reverse protest. I inserted 20 Video Nasty movie titles in the lyrics for ‘Horror Vision’ as a tribute to anti-censorship. In the music video, we highlight those films plus many more in the horror realm. I called upon fellow fright enthusiast Jim Stramel (BAT, Streetbanger) for his editing skills once again to create this onslaught of terror. We made sure that Mary Whitehouse not only rolls in her grave, but rocks her stiff bones down to hell with this video clip.”

To celebrate the release, BAT offers fans the single, ‘Revenge Of The Wolf‘. The band once again returned to horror director Norman Cabrera to create the perfect visuals. The video included cinematography completed by Rob Lucas, editing handled by Mike Mendez, and Maya Kay was responsible for the production.
Ryan Waste states, “The wait is finally over as our creation takes flight, sinking its claws into the airwaves. It was a true test of our will, caging this beast for what felt like an eternity. I’d especially like to thank my bandmates, Nick and Chris for their hard work and patience through the entire process. We wrote these songs during grim times and their ferocity is certainly emulated by that. Unleashing these tales of terror gives me a sense of fulfillment that is completely unmatched.”
Chris Marshall states, “I still bear the scars from The Claw.”
Nick Poulos comments, “From note to note, speed on speed, to say I’m proud of Under The Crooked Claw is an absolute understatement. We poured our hearts, minds, and souls into this record and I’m so proud of what we accomplished. My favorite BAT offering to date!”

Today, the band offers the infectious second track entitled ‘Streetbanger‘. The music video was directed by Ryan Waste and the cinematography was completed by Jeff Howlett.
BAT‘s Ryan Waste states, “‘Streetbanger’ was a title and lyrical concept I’ve had since the BAT demo days, so it’s been marinating for some time. It’s one of the tunes we reworked and played live for a while so it’s already been a staple in the setlist. For the video, we walked the streets of our hometown, Richmond, VA and shot the performance in our actual rehearsal space. I was able to direct the video clip on my own terms with the help of our close friend Jeff Howlett. Jeff is an amazing photographer who shot the band photos for our upcoming album Under the Crooked Claw as well as a documentary filmmaker known for A Band Called Death (2012). ‘Streetbanger’ embodies our raw, no-frills attitude in BAT and what you see is what you get.”

The band offers the first single entitled, ‘Rite For Exorcism‘ along with a video clip directed by Norman Cabrera, produced by Maya Kay,and cinematography by Rob Lucas at Wolfpack Studios.
BAT‘s Ryan Waste states, “This record came together during dark times and its aggression is surely a reflection of that. Nick, Chris, and I hammered out song after song in a grimy, mold-ridden warehouse, turning our anger at the state of the world into what became ‘Under the Crooked Claw’. To set the tone for the album, I called upon legendary Italian horror maestro Fabio Frizzi to compose an intro, just before BAT’s raw force assaults your ears. While simultaneously working on a heavy metal horror script with Norman Cabrera, I shared some of the new BAT songs with him. With our shared taste in film and vision, we devised two video concepts for the upcoming record based on my lyrics. The first offering is our twist on a tale of an exorcism gone awry, that Norman completely nailed to the cross.”
BAT – Under The Crooked Claw Tracklist 1. Una Torcia Illumina Il Cielo (Fabio Frizzi) 2. Vampyre Lore 3. Rite For Exorcism 4. Streetbanger 5. Just Buried 6. Warshock 7. Horror Vision 8. Battered 9. Revenge of the Wolf 10. Marauders of Doom 11. Electric Warning 12. Bastardized Force 13. Final Strike
