TotalRock‘s beginnings go way back to 1978 with The Friday Rock Show at BBC Radio 1, hosted by Tommy Vance and produced by Tony Wilson. The effect this had on the rock and metal scene in the UK was substantial not only for fans to hear this music but also for the bands reaching out.
Many a conversation was had in the BBC hallways amongst like minded colleagues such as Andy King, and led to the formation of the UKs first full time rock and metal specific radio station in 1997, ‘Rock Radio Network’, in the front lounge at Skulls house, “The Skullery”, along with the walking encyclopedia of metal, journalist Malcolm Dome, and long time contributor, Maria Hererros.
In 2000 ‘TotalRock’ was born after receiving investment and launched on Sky Digital. First based at The Kings Head in Fulham and later Denmark Place in Soho next to The Astoria, with legendary DJs such as Krusher, Diamond Dave, Mighty Matt Mason and the Twisted Sisters and too many more to mention here. Artists and journos alike have flocked to our airwaves (including Jerry Ewing, Katie.P, Dougie White, Alex Milas, Bill Steer, Louise Brown, Robin Guy, Chris Dale, Sophie K, Kylie Ollson, Julia Hardy, Ginger Wildheart, Matt Goom, Anna Phoebe and Dom Lawson) helping to wave the flag of the true voice of rock and metal. A brief stint as Bloodstock Radio was enjoyed in 2013 based in Shoreditch and then another move to Euston back as TotalRock.
TotalRock now operates without a London studio, allowing presenters to contribute their shows from absolutely anywhere.
Metal Shock Finland Senior Manager Alison Booth recently spoke to Niklas Stålvind, front man of Swedish metallers WOLF, as part of the sixth anniversary celebrations of her Blackdiamond’s Metal Mayhem radio show. The chat was just a few days ahead of the band returning to the studio to start recording their next and eighth album, the follow up to 2014’s “Devil Seed”. The whole show can be heard here.
They discussed what WOLF has been doing the last few years, the recently announced UK tour set for March next year, Nik‘s role with THE DOOMSDAY KINGDOM and of course all the latest WOLF news, with exclusive details about the new album! Some excerpts from the chat can be read below, with the full interview on the audio player.
Discussing the next album, Niklas stated:
“It’s a bit rawer and rougher than the Devil Seed. The Devil Seed was a bit polished. I don’t wanna call it polished, it has a lot of depth to it, but it was also a kind of expensive sounding production.
This time we want to get back to the roots of the old school Wolf with the energy and rawness you know, but still keeping that depth. So this time, I tried to write deeper stuff, you know, simple, powerful songs and not overwork the demo and I’m really excited.
Also, I can tell you that one of the reasons this album has taken so long is because for me, song writing is my therapist, my shrink. And I had some really weird experience and dark period in my life that I never talked to someone about it, just put the lid on. And now, like twenty years later, I knew to get forward in life I really had to deal with these issues, that’s what these songs are about. I felt that I couldn’t really rush this process of writing the songs.
And also, there’s a lot of things going on in the world that the album deals with.
This album is not about just writing ten, twelve songs and record and get it out. It’s a bit deeper than that I think, at least for me, so that’s why it’s taken a while.”
On the new album, Niklas revealed:
“It’s not official yet but I can tell it to you – the plan is to release it in August. It depends on how well it goes in the studio, but I think it should be very easy to record it when we have things well planned out.
And everything is written already so we don’t have to sweat in the studio and come up with lyrics and melodies you know. The foundations of the songs are already there – I think it will actually be released after the summer as we plan.”

Last month, Senior Manager Alison Booth presented a Halloween special on her weekly Blackdiamond’s Metal Mayhem radio show. One of the special guests featured was DIMMU BORGIR‘s Silenoz.
As well as discussing Halloween celebrations in Norway and what Silenoz gets up to, they also had a chat about what’s happening with the highly anticipated forthcoming DIMMU BORGIR album. The full chat can be heard on the audio player below and you can read what Silenoz said about the new album below. The full Halloween show can be heard on Mixcloud at this location.
“Everything is pretty much set to go and we’re still in the final stages of getting everything artwork-wise ready, photos, videos, stuff like that. So, things are taking a bit of a time – I guess after seven years, a little bit more waiting doesn’t hurt too much hopefully.
Yeah we feel we’re sitting on the best album we could possibly do at this time and personally I definitely think it’s our best album to date. Obviously that’s something that everybody says, but if I didn’t believe that we would do our best album, there wouldn’t really be any point doing a new one.
So yeah I’m really excited about it and I know that quite a few fans will be positively surprised. And yeah, we can’t wait to get this stuff off the ground and get going.”
When asked for an idea of when the album will be released, Silenoz revealed:
“Well I would say when we spoke last time I said something about around this time (laughs) or November 2017. But now, I think it’s gonna be the first half of 2018, the way it looks now. We’re lucky that Forces Of The Northern Night was something of a layover, I guess you can call it. We’re really happy about the response to that – there’s been great feedback all over, so we’re really happy about that too.”
