“Pocho Aztlan” is the band’s first release since “Brujerizmo” was released in 2000 via Roadrunner. It was recorded over the course of many years and at several studios around the globe. The end result was mixed by Russ Russell (NAPALM DEATH, THE EXPLOITED).

BRUJERIA‘s legend has proliferated for nearly three decades. When the band first emerged from the sunbaked hellscape of Los Angeles in 1989, the city was on the brink of chaos. Daryl Gates ruled the LAPD with an iron fist, overseeing a legion of blue-suited stormtroopers who cracked brown and black skulls at every opportunity. Rodney King, the ’92 riots, and CA governor Pete “Pito” Wilson‘s anti-immigrant Prop 187 were all on the bleak horizon. The Mexican-American agitators of BRUJERIA captured the mood of the city’s minorities with the band’s infamous and widely banned 1993 debut, »Matando Güeros« (“Killing White People”), quickly becoming the Spanish-language counterparts to early grindcore masters TERRORIZER and NAPALM DEATH. Led by lyricist and mastermind Juan Brujo, BRUJERIA were alternately rumored to be satanic drug lords and members of well-established metal bands. The truth, as always, lays somewhere in between.
Fast forward to right about now: “Pocho Aztlan” is BRUJERIA‘s first new album in 16 years. The title translates to “Wasted Promised Land,” a combination of Aztlán, the fabled ancestral home of the Aztecs, and the term pocho, which native Mexicans use to refer – not always kindly – to their counterparts born in the States. Brujo himself is pocho, a man caught between two worlds. Many pochos are not exactly accepted with open arms in Mexico. Meanwhile, they’re too often regarded as second-class citizens in their adopted US home. Brujo has transcended both scenarios through the power of BRUJERIA‘s uncompromising grindcore and death metal. His all-Spanish lyrics are as vivid as they are effective: Bona fide tales from the frontlines of the drug war, the racial divide, and the battle for the border. “A lot of BRUJERIA songs are true stories,”Brujo says. “And if they haven’t happened yet, they will happen.”
Norwegian extreme metal titans ANCIENT will blast the mainstage of UTBS(Under The Black Sun Festival) in Börnicke – Germany, on Saturday July 2nd, at 21:20 – 22:20. For the touring commitments with BRUJERIA, the band’s drummer, Nick Barker, is forced to step out from the festival. ANCIENT has announced that he will be replaced by drummer Jonathan Garofoli, known from his performances with Melechesh, Naer Mataron and many others.
ANCIENT frontman Zel comments: “We are very lucky to have found Jonathan to play with us, not many can dare to try filling in the shoes of Nick Barker, but this guy kick some serious ass!”.
Jonathan‘s comment on collaboration: “Sometimes life is sweetly tricky, one day you’re listening to an album of a band you like and after years you’re playing with that band! Should sound kinda crazy but it’s not, actually is what happened to me right now since I got the proposal from Ancient to get the role to step behind the kit to play at UNDER THE BLACK SUN FESTIVAL 2016! To me its a true honor to have been recruited by such a respectful and historical ensemble like Ancient, I’m pretty sure our collaboration will create and establish some real musical magic!!!”

Biography:
Jonathan “A.D.D.” Garofoli, Extreme Metal drummer since the year 1996. Well known in the nowadays scene for his annihilating and creative approach to the instrument, leader of the Blackened Death metal Leviathans Azrath-11 and belligerent stormblasters behind the kit for the Hellenic Black Metal Warlords Naer Mataron.
He’s paved his career with 24 Official releases, toured multiple times Europe, an headline tour in South America in 2009 and in recent times reached the Middle Eastern lands. Jonathan in the last years established his status as prestigious session artist for many important acts like Melechesh and Ancient among the others, offered his skills for the polish death metal masters Lost Soul releasing in late 2015 the worldwide multi acclaimed album “ Atlantis The New Beginning”.

“The song (‘Viva Presidente Trump!’) was on shelf for years with no idea for vocals,” states vocalist Juan Brujo. “It was gonna be an ‘Anti-Castro’ part II song but nothing came out of it. It just needed proper motivation to go and attach itself to someone… and Trump came thru!”
“I see Trump as the white republican version of Juan Brujo circa ’93. Wanting to start shit for the hell of it! That’s why it’s called ‘Viva Presidente Trump!’ We both want same thing! So much that I want to be his running mate!”

But what is the truth? Regardless of who they are or what they stand for Brujeria remain a force of nature. A very evil nature.
