Vocalist Dani “Filth” Davey of British extreme metallers CRADLE OF FILTH recently joined the Ipswich, Suffolk, U.K.-based band DEVILMENT.
A five-minute question-and-answer session with Filth about DEVILMENT can be seen below.
Originally formed by Daniel J Finch back in late 2011 amidst a bout of religious delirium, DEVILMENT consisted of Simon Dawson (STEVE HARRIS, ex-DEARLY BEHEADED) on drums, Justin Walker (13 CANDLES) on bass and Kieron De-Courci (ex-THE VOICE) on keyboards, with the band experiencing a myriad of problems holding down a stable vocalist.
Enter Daniel‘s friend Dani Filth, who, “although not entirely stable mentally,” agreed to help out on a couple of tracks, which then turned swiftly into a studio demo, completed after Dani finished work on CRADLE‘s “The Manticore And Other Horrors” album last summer. The demo, known as “Grotescapology”, featured eight tracks, which, although psychotically competent, were used solely as a backbone for a new line-up when Simon Dawson suddenly departed to record and tour the Steve Harris BRITISH LION album, and the remaining two members agreed that work and distance were conspiring to keep them from dedicating enough time to the band. Fortunately, at this point, destiny sat on a posturing horse, was proud to usher Nick Johnson (bass), Dan Jackson (guitar) and Aaron Boast (percussion) into the fray, three extremely competent musicians who suddenly grew out of the local music scene, and soon the band was at full steam once more and starting to write as a combined unit.
Thus October 2012 to the present day has proved to be a very productive time for the band, with a further five songs written towards a debut album, as well as the refinement of older material that a new, gelatinous lineup has dictated (plus a fistful of cool covers to boot…). So, with 2013 well underway, the band are looking mightily forward to the warmer months, a near-future that promises to be rife with the onset of a new plague of bewitchment and DEVILMENT!

Vocalist Dani “Filth” Davey of British extreme metallers CRADLE OF FILTH has completed work on a poetry book, “Across The River Bedlam”, for release later in the year. The book, which will contain “poems that [Dani has] written from time to time over the years,” will include illustrations by Sam Araya, the artist responsible for CRADLE OF FILTH‘s “Thornography” and “Harder, Darker, Faster” releases as well as various COF t-shirt designs.
Two pages from “Across The River Bedlam” can be seen below.
More artwork that will be included in the book can be found at this location.
In other news, CRADLE OF FILTH is working on an adult comic book, the story for which has been scripted by the comic writer Kurt Amacker (with assistance from Dani Filth). Several artists are in the process of mocking up some example pages for the prospective publishers. Dani states: “I am very excited about this venture, as it promises to be a very adult story woven straight from the CRADLE OF FILTH universe, featuring a liberated Oscar Wilde, the Demoness Lilith, nefarious sexual magickal practices and an errant Suffolk Lord who is in the unenviable process of being charged under 19th-century blasphemy laws, discovering himself engaged in a nightmarish occult netherworld.”
CRADLE OF FILTH‘s tenth studio album, “The Manticore And Other Horrors”, sold 4,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 96 on The Billboard 200 chart. The band’s previous full-length effort, “Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa”, opened with 5,800 units in November 2010 to land at No. 99.

CRADLE OF FILTH frontman Dani Filth is featured in a new interview with Rock Revolt Magazine and tackles a number of subjects, including the recent cancellation of the band’s North American tour. An excerpt is available below:

On the tour cancellation: “Well, nobody is more bummed out than I am. I was really looking forward to coming. It was such a simple policy that was brought in. Things just got messed up and the consulate couldn’t turn it around for an indeterminate amount of time; up to 14 weeks. As it turned out, it wasn’t that long, but we just couldn’t risk it. We just got the approval last week, but obviously the tour had already started. It was an absolute nightmare. Nobody knew anything about this. It was a new protocol that has come in between the U.S. government and the British consulate, or the American consulate in London. It was an absolute bloody nightmare. Hopefully, they realize that they are at fault, but you can’t really argue against a whole government.”
“Hopefully now, we’ve held out for a longer tour. Some people had said that this one was rather short, which it was, and I don’t know why. Perhaps it was because there are a lot of bands out and about at the present. It was a total nightmare. We were utterly, utterly, mortified about it (laughs). It was five weeks of work that could have been. We had just gotten back from Europe and we were playing awesomely. It was like a dream. It was really enjoyable. So, we were looking forward to playing in America, because it’s a few gigs between Wal-Mart stops (laughs).
“I am a strong believer in that things happen for a reason. I know it doesn’t look great at the moment, because there are a lot people that are pissed off. Believe me. We are as pissed off as anybody else, if not more. We’ve had two weeks to twiddle our thumbs about it. We are just trying to get by. As I said, I think things happen for a reason, and will just lead to a bigger and better tour, later in the year.”
