Former Dio Drummer (EX AC/DC) Simon Wright joins Jimmy Kay and Alan Dixon on The Metal Voice ( https://www.facebook.com/themetalvoice) on the 10 year anniversary of Ronnie’s passing. Wright talks about his relationship with Ronnie, Dio Disciples, Dio Hologram and the music on the Dio albums he played on. He also spoke about his time with AC/DC.

Quotes from the interview

Working with Ronnie
“Ronnie was just great to work for, he let me do my own things and experiment with things (Drumming). I just loved the way he worked, it was all about the music to make it the best possible.”

His views on the Dio Lock up the Wolves album today
” I did listen to it a couple of weeks ago and I think it stands up. It’s got some great songs on it and I have fond memories of recording it. I do think it stands the test of time, it holds up well in the overall Dio Catalog.”

On Magica 2 that was never completed
“Ronnie had written down the beginnings of the continuation of the story of Magica and we were working on some songs. Doug Aldrich came over the house just to keep things rolling along because Ronnie wasn’t feeling very well and we thought it would occupy his mind and Ronnie wanted to do it. There was three or four ideas put down and Ronnie begun to continue the novel but that wasn’t to be. ”

On the Dio Disciples album that is in the works
“The album is on hold cause we took a shift and we were all involved with the Hologram, which is called Dio Returns. So we were out on the road of May June of last year and it went really well. When we first started it was kind of slow and people were very wary of it and you can’t blame them cause it’s new technology. People were thinking we were doing Ronnie a bad move which is ridiculous people have screens up that show images and it’s pretty much the same thing. So we took a shift and Dio Disciples is on hold at the moment. We have got about 4-5 demos down of different songs that me and guitarist Craig Goldy were working on and that’s about it. It’s kind of on hold at the moment as we are focusing on Dio Returns.”

When asked Simon Wright about the upcoming Dio Disciples album
“The new album got pulled back a little bit, we are still writing the songs, tossing around ideas but it looks like it’s going to be, not confirmed but towards the end of 2019”

When asked Simon Wright if the Dio Disciples will continue to tour with the Dio Hologram
“There are plan to tour with Dio Hologram next year and it will be different, it’s going to be a lot better as far as the way it looks. it’s the same hologram but they took it to the shop, worked on it and it looks really really good, it looks almost real. The team is in the process of deciding what the tour will look like. There are so many people who didn’t get a chance to see Ronnie Dio live so, now they will get to see him as live as is possible, it’s going to be a big show, big production.”

“Bowl For Ronnie” celebrity bowling party, benefiting the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund, which was held on Thursday, October 25 at PINZ Bowling Center in Studio City, California. The event was hosted by television and radio personality Eddie Trunk.

For The Metal Voice former Anthrax singer Neil Turbin spoke to DIO DISCIPLES singer Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens (Judas Priest, Iced Earth) and drummer Simon Wright (Ex AC/DC) at the 4th Annual Ride for Ronnie on May 6 2018 at Encino Park California.

The two spoke about the new DIO DISCIPLES album, their relationship with Ronnie and their thoughts on Axl Rose singing and recording with AC/DC.

When asked about the upcoming first Dio Disciple Studio album
Ripper -“When started doing the Dio Disciples we did it to celebrate Ronnie James Dio that was the main idea and it kind of spawned off onto try and do a record. Craig Goldy’s Wheels are always turning to write material. Wendy said it was a great idea, then Wendy started to shop the idea to people. We have already worked on 4-5 songs. It’s exciting for us to do it cause people wanted us to do our own music.”

Simon- “Ronnie will always be with us in spirit and we will see what comes out so far the music is sounding really good. We all have different influences hopefully it’s going to be this big mish-mash of everything (Judas Priest, Dio , AC/DC). The songs that we have done also have a bit of originality in them.”

Ripper- “We are not making a Dio record. ”

When asked about their relationship with Ronnie James Dio over the years
Ripper- “When Jugulator came out when I was in Judas Priest, Ronnie went out of his way to have me come back stage to meet him and to talk to him and he gave me his number. We became friends. Most people would treat me like shit back in the day because I came out of nowhere and was the singer of Judas Priest. Ronnie became my friend, he took me in and listened to me.”

When asked about their thoughts about Axl Rose possible singing on a new AC/DC studio album
Simon- “A lot happened in a short period of time, knowing Angus I’m sure he wants to keep going. Angus has got Chris Slade, Stevie Young he might need to find a bass player. As far as singers it will probably be Axl, I really don’t know.”

Ripper- I wasn’t a fan of that at first but when I watch AC/DC with Axl Rose signing, I think that Axl looks like he is really enjoying it and that’s the key. AC/DC has got a star who looks like he is a kid enjoying it and I think it’s kind of cool. I would rather see Brian Johnson.”

METAL BLADE RECORDS, SCORPIONS, And THE RAINBOW Just Nominated To THE HALL OF HEAVY METAL HISTORY

Metal Blade Records (Celebrating their 35th Anniversary), Scorpions, and The Rainbow Bar and Grill have just joined the list of Metal Royalty who have been nominated for induction into the 2017 Hall of Heavy Metal History. The All-Star Induction Ceremony will take place on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at the Anaheim Expo Center, Anaheim CA.  Television and Radio Legend Eddie Trunk will host the event.

Performing at the Ceremony will be Dio Disciples featuring “Craig Goldy,” “Simon Wright” “Scott Warren,” “Bjorn Englen,” “Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens,” and “Joe Retta.”  Ross “The Boss” (band), will also be performing, which features Iconic guitarist “Ross ‘The Boss’ Friedman,” “Rhino (Formerly of Manowar),” vocalist “Marc Lopes,” and “Mike LePond” (Symphony X).  Surprise artists will also take part in the event. Supporting bands include Budderside, and LA rockers Diamond Lane.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund.

A press conference and General Admission entrance will commence at 6:30 PM. The Induction Ceremony will take place from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A VIP Meet and Greet with the celebrity Inductees will take place after the Induction Ceremony. Ross The Boss Band, Budderside, Diamond Lane, and surprise guests will perform throughout the night.

Music fans can be a part of the most important night in Heavy Metal!! Tickets are $25.00 for General Admission, and $100.00 for combined General Admission and “VIP Meet And Greet” with the Celebrity Inductees.
