The latest chapter in Enslaved’s 30th anniversary voyage is coming to a close. Today, the Norwegian avant-gardists have released their full Cinematic Tour 2020 live album/DVD collection, and in celebration they have premiered a live video for ‘Homebound’, the final act in this tetralogy of exquisite audiovisual performances.
‘Homebound’ is a snapshot of a unique show, recorded in summer 2020 in Sotra, Norway, encompassing five tracks from Utgard, Enslaved’s latest studio album. Utgard saw Enslaved inhabit an esoteric space – finding themselves fueled by the pace of their black metal origins, while continuing their melodic evolution.
Iver Sandøy commented, “Ah, the live album… Some of my all time favourite albums have been concert recordings. On top of that list I’ll put Made In Japan by Deep Purple and Live After Death by Iron Maiden. As a youngster, I spent more time listening to these cassettes on my little walkman than any other album since. Both those stellar collections of career defining performances by each of those bands were, incidentally, captured for posterity by the brilliant Martin Birch. He sadly left us in August 2020, right as Enslaved were working on these virtual performances that we are now, finally, releasing properly in all the classic formats.
The classic live albums of the 70s and 80s stand as monuments to not only amazing performances by the artists, but also a celebration of the bond between them and their audiences. The parallel universe that was 2020 forced Enslaved to find other ways to honour that bond. We could not hear you scream for us from your living rooms as we performed, but these recordings stand as a testament, and indeed, a monument, to the eternal gratitude we feel towards you, our fans.”

Enslaved are also proud to announce that they will be playing at Hellfest 2022, on Friday June 24th 2022, headlining the Temple stage. For more information head to: https://hellfest.fr

Norway’s progressive metal legends ENSLAVED have travelled a long way since their origins in the extreme black metal scene of the early 1990s. This week sees them premiere a new live video performance of ‘Sacred Horse‘, taken from their forthcoming package of live releases, Cinematic Tour 2020, out June 25th. For Enslaved, this performance represents a cherished career zenith, unapologetically translating their extreme metal roots into grandiose psychedelia.
‘Sacred Horse’ (live) is taken from their upcoming Cinematic Tour 2020 recording: The Rise of Ymir (Verftet Online Festival 2020). Despite being locked down in space, Enslaved take us on a tour through time, with classic tracks and fan favourites resurrected and revitalised by a formidable and accomplished live performance.
Many great bands struggle to walk the hard road between artistic evolution and staying true to themselves, but on ‘Sacred Horse‘ and The Rise of Ymir, Enslaved show how inspired composition and musicianship can bring an audience along with them, from the most abrasive depths to the most absorbing heights extreme metal has to offer.
Enslaved’s Grutle Kjellson commented, “Sacred Horse is probably one of our proudest moments in our now three-decade long career, and that song pretty much sums up what Enslaved is all about; energy. A very aggressive song, yet also dynamic and mellow. Besides, it’s always a delightful experience to perform it on stage and to see how our audience absorbs it and enjoys it. We’ve even seen people crying at the front row while playing this song, and of course beholding our fans unleashing such emotions, really lifts the whole experience to a pretty much divine level! Obviously, performing it without an audience at an online show wasn’t an easy task, but the memories of our previous endeavours playing it alongside our fans, got us through. Thanks for watching!”

Never faltering, Norway’s iconic Enslaved continue to exist as one of the most original and dependable components in our scene’s indestructible backbone. Possessing the reputation as one of the most riveting live acts around, they never fail to offer us talent of the highest calibre, always doing justice to their signature black/progressive sound. Enslaved was formed in 1991 by Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson releasing their first demo Yggdrasillin the summer of 1992, their legendary mini-albumHordanes Land coming out in 1993 with debut full lengthVikingligr Veldiarriving in the spring of 1994.
Enslaved in 2021 is a band in stellar form, a band at its most existentialist and self-conscious, proud Bergeners bearing the torch of their hometown’s extraordinary musical history. Latest album Utgardhas shown them at a stage where simply everything they touch turns to gold. Icy black metal anthems walk hand in hand with refined prog rock gems and primordial, dark folk sorcery. It’s Enslaved to the bone. And yet again a band that cast off its old skin, delivering some of their shortest songs in years while still packing them with glimmering detail. It is a journey into and through scary Utgard, showing Enslaved both unleashed and thought-through – a lethal combination unfurling a potential that’s easily rekindling the furor of their early works while dancing gracefully through their most ambitious, most haunting and most musical tunes yet. A contradiction? Life itself is a contradiction. And yet we all live to prove it wrong.
Left-field metal luminaries ENSLAVED have revealed the next audiovisual gem taken from their forthcoming Cinematic Tour 2020 live releases. As part of their 30th anniversary revelries, the band has today premiered a live video for their single ‘Fenris’. A classic track from their early arsenal- though black metal to its core, ‘Fenris’ nevertheless hinted at their kosmische obsessions that lurked behind the curtain.
This performance of ‘Fenris’ is taken from their upcoming live release Chronicles of the Northbound (Cinematic Tour 2020), which sees Enslaved fly through a career spanning entirely fan-voted set of favourites. It is one part of their four new live album/DVD Cinematic Tour 2020 collection due to be released on June 25th.
Enslaved’s Grutle Kjellson commented, “Fenris was perhaps the first song we wrote that got a massive encore demand, and before we actually had a lot of songs to pick from, we even played it twice during a set… haha. So, since all the songs on the Chronicles of the Northbound set was handpicked and voted for by our fans, it wasn’t a big shock that the grand old wolf was among the chosen ones. Fenris has been present on many of our setlists for pretty close to 30 years now, and it is still a great song for both ourselves to perform and for the audience to absorb. It’s a very energetic song, and its lyrical concept deals with letting the energy flow naturally without trying to enslave (bish!) it. The consequences can be fatal if you keep the wolf in captivity for too long. Let loose your inner wolf, the inevitable tide, and enjoy!”

Blackened avant-gardists ENSLAVED have revealed the next passage in their 30th anniversary voyage. To celebrate the launch of their Cinematic Tour 2020 live album digital pre-orders, the band has premiered a live video for their single ‘The Crossing’, which captures anotherworldly performance of their classic song through a new modern lens.
Recorded on a dark day in summer 2020 at USF Verftet in Bergen, Norway, the performance is taken from their upcoming live release Below The Lights (Cinematic Tour 2020), which seesEnslaved play their acclaimed opus Below the Lights in its entirety. It is one part of their four new live album/DVD Cinematic Tour 2020 collection due to be released on June 25th.
Enslaved’s Grutle Kjellson commented, “The online performance of Below The Lights was indeed a trip. There has been a huge demand for us to perform that album for some years now. Ironically, because there was very little buzz around it in the days of its initial release back in 2003. I guess we fell into the good ol’ pit in-between the chairs back then, and we got pretty puzzled when people started to shout out for those songs 10 years later!
Anyway, we are psyched and proud to present to you a special performance of the whole album, also including a sixth member, Inge Rypdal! Rypdal is a long time friend of the band and has been collaborating with Enslaved on several occasions over the years, including a stunning performance on the recordings of Below The Lights, adding a beautiful contribution on ‘A Darker Place’.
Here’s a little sneak peak! Enjoy ‘The Crossing’ and have a heavy weekend”

The crown jewel for old vinyl collectors like ourselves has got to be the wooden box – handmade, numbered and named individually. That is simply… metal!”

ENSLAVED are being honoured with an elaborate 12 part television documentary named Heimvegen (The Way Home), which is broadcast every Saturday on Norwegian TV (TV Haugaland) and on YouTube. All episodes are subtitled into English.
The documentary offers a detailed insight into the history of the band, following Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson as they guide us through the journey of ENSLAVED‘s formative years.
Five episodes are available to watch online now, with more to follow every Saturday.
Grutle Kjellson commented, “Doing the documentary for TV Haugaland has turned out to be one of the biggest, positive surprises in our career. It pretty much came out of the blue as well; we were asked early in the summer of 2020, and we were like “oh ok, a local tv network wants to have a little chat, why not?”. That it has ended up as a 12 part documentary was far beyond all of us involved could imagine, and such a great surprise!! Director Dag Olav Husås has really outdone a hell of lot of productions made by a lot bigger networks around the globe in my opinion. He has somehow made us re-discover ourselves, our roots, and going down this memory lane had been an utter pleasure. I hope not just our fans, but also new acquaintances will appreciate watching this as much as we did making it.”
ENSLAVED recently announced a celebratory Winter Solstice streaming event for Saturday 19th December via the Revolver Magazine Facebook page, which will be followed by a live Q&A with some band members. The event will be repeated the next day Sunday 20th December on the Enslaved YouTube channel.
The digital event will feature all three parts of ENSLAVED‘s recent Cinematic Summer Tour, the revered filmed performances titled; ‘Chronicles of the Northbound’, ‘Below the Lights’ and ‘Utgard the Journey Within’. The events are also collaborations with respected European festivals Roadburn, Beyond The Gates and Summer Breeze.
