OL DRAKE: Ex-EVILE Guitarist Releases First Demo Track From Upcoming Solo Album

Former EVILE lead guitarist OL DRAKE has released the first piece of music from his upcoming debut solo album, featuring mind-bending melodic leads in a style rarely seen today.

The six-string shredder, who is currently on the road working as a guitar tech for German thrash legends DESTRUCTION, is working on an album of extreme instrumental guitar music, which is due to be released in 2015. A demo version of the first track, ‘Spaceship Janitor’, is available now.

OL DRAKE comments:

“Hello, all. After a long, long time of trying to find my direction and sound for this project, I’m starting to churn material out of my brain that I’m starting to enjoy; I need to enjoy the stuff I’m writing. What we have here is a DEMO recording of one of the songs from the upcoming solo album; this is what I send to the label to show progress (this is NOT mixed or mastered). Its working title is ‘Spaceship Janitor’. I didn’t have a title for the song, but every time I listened through for writing directions I couldn’t stop imagining a janitor on a spaceship, mopping the space-floor with his space-mop, listening to this song on his space-iPod… in space.

“This track is not fully representative of the rest of the material on the album as I’m experimenting with a lot of my influences and inspirations; everything from rock and metal to acoustic and classical. EVILE: New Guitarist Announced

Former FALLEN FATE guitar player Piers Donno Fuller joins EVILE.

It came as a huge shock to everyone in the metal world when Evile guitarist Ol Drake announced he was leaving the band last year.

The remaining members, Matt Drake, Ben Carter and Joel Graham took some time out to take stock of Ol’s decision and what they had achieved as a band at that point and decided that the only course of action was to carry on, and that meant finding someone to replace their departing guitarist.

Replacing Ol was never going to be easy and the band didn’t want to rush into making any choice on a potential replacement and so they’ve spent months going through audition tapes from hundreds of hopefuls.

There was a clear favourite from quite early in the process and after months of auditions and rehearsals the band are confident that they have found the perfect man for the job.

Bass player Joel Graham states; ‘We had to step back and ask what do we do from this point. We thought it would be a shame to stop it right now. We had to find the right guy, that’s taken time. I appreciate people have been waiting for news but we’ve got to spend time with this guy, get on with him, travel with him and he’s got big shoes to fill.’

Evile are excited to welcome Piers Donno Fuller (formerly of Fallen Fate) to the band, a guitarist who not only is a phenomenal talent but has also slotted perfectly into Evile on a personal level.

Piers comments; ‘I’m massively grateful to these guys for letting me come on board. I’m learning all the tracks. Ol’s a fantastic guitar player so it’s not easy trying to work out his solos. We’ve got something in the pipeline for March.’

EVILE Launches Lead-Guitarist Search

On August 30, guitarist Ol Drake announced his departure from EVILE. he explained in a statement: “Over the past year, I’ve, unfortunately, found myself becoming more and more detached from the touring/band lifestyle.

“In my opinion, the music business for a band of our genre and ‘level’ determines a very unrealistic way of life to me, and I personally find it difficult to make a living and have a ‘normal’ life.

“I’ve reached a point where I want a family/kids, a house, a steady and definite income and everything in between, and in regard to my personal preferences, a touring band’s income and uncertainties, in the state that I feel they would continue to be in, has become incompatible with how I feel and what I want/need.”

EVILE released its fourth album, “Skull”, on May 27 in Europe on Earache Records and in North America via Century Media/Earache Records. The follow-up to 2011’s “Five Serpent’s Teeth” was once again recorded with producer Russ Russell (NAPALM DEATH, DIMMU BORGIR) at Parlour Studios in Kettering, England. The artwork for the album was painted by artist Eliran Kantor (TESTAMENT, SODOM, HATEBREED).

It has been announced today that guitarist Ol Drake has left British thrashers EVILE. Ol said the following:

“It’s been half my life (15 years) since I started jamming in a room with three other guys, in a group in which I didn’t know would grow to be Evile, go through what Evile has gone through and achieve what Evile has so far achieved,” says the man himself in a statement. “Since 1999, I’ve put 100% of my time and life into the band we formed, while us all had/have to sacrifice a lot financially and personally along the way. I’ve had some of the best times of my life in the past 15 years and met some amazing and fascinating people. I’ve had the huge honour to play a part in so many things I’d never have dreamed of: paying tribute to Dimebag [Pantera] by covering Cemetery Gates in Metal Hammer; supporting Megadeth, Exodus and many bands I grew up listening to; playing and recording with Destruction; touring/seeing places in the world I’d never have got to see otherwise and many more.

Over the past year, I’ve, unfortunately, found myself becoming more and more detached from the touring/band lifestyle. In my opinion, the music business for a band of our genre and ‘level’ determines a very unrealistic way of life to me, and I personally find it difficult to make a living and have a ‘normal’ life. This is not a plea for sympathy, I’m simply being honest. I’ve reached a point where I want a family/kids, a house, a steady and definite income and everything in between, and in regard to my personal preferences, a touring band’s income and uncertainties, in the state that I feel they would continue to be in, has become incompatible with how I feel and what I want/need.

“There is no animosity between the rest of the band and I. This is purely a personal and financial decision I’ve been mulling over for a while and I wish them all the best for the future. I am not unappreciative of the position Evile has in the music world; I know a lot of people would love to be where Evile are. I want to thank each and every person who supports the band, and I want to extend a special thanks to Digby and the Earache Records crew. Huge apologies to anyone this disappoints, but I have to do what makes sense to me. I am not quitting writing or playing; I do plan on continuing to record and write my own music (solo project, general composing/recording etc), I just won’t be touring etc. I’ll still be playing the two upcoming festival shows Evile have.

EVILE: ‘Underworld’ Lyric Video Released

The official lyric video for “Underworld”, a brand new song from British thrashers EVILE, can be seen below. The track comes off the band’s fourth album, “Skull”, which will be released on May 27 in Europe on Earache Records and in North America via Century Media/Earache Records. The follow-up to 2011’s “Five Serpent’s Teeth” was once again recorded with producer Russ Russell (NAPALM DEATH, DIMMU BORGIR) at Parlour Studios in Kettering, England. Commented EVILE frontman Matt Drake: “We are proud to release the first full track from our upcoming album, ‘Skull’, for you to wrap your ears around. Hopefully this gives you a good idea of what’s in store for you all come May 27th.

“‘Underworld’ is a title I’ve wanted to use for a very long time but hadn’t found the right song for it; it’s named after the venue in London of the same name as it’s been one of my favorite places to play for years now. The song itself isn’t directly about the venue, but it’s definitely dedicated to it. The song is inspired by a short sci-fi story I read about the earth’s surface becoming uninhabitable and people being forced to live deep underground. It ties in to one of the overall themes of the album which is about things being hidden, be it thoughts, feelings, motivations or truths. At the same time it’s about something else but I don’t want to give everything away all at once; it’s better if you make up your own mind!

“Hope you enjoy what you hear and we will see you in a few days time with the mighty KREATOR where we will be playing new songs for the first time. See you there!!”

British thrashers EVILE celebrated this year’s Record Store Day by releasing a split seven-inch picture disc vinyl with Swedish death metal legends ENTOMBED.

The limited-edition release features ENTOMBED‘s classic 1990 track, “Drowned”, along with EVILE‘s 2012 cover version, available on vinyl for the first time. The seven-inch is available in independent record stores starting on Saturday, April 20 in strictly limited quantities.

EVILE performed a special show for fans earlier today (Saturday, April 20) at Crash Records in Leeds, U.K. Fans who bought the seven-inch vinyl from Crash Records on the day got free entry to the show (space permitting).

Founded in 2007 and officially kicked off in 2008 by METALLICA, Record Store Day takes place on the third Saturday of every April and brings together artists and independently owned record stores around the world to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and sold in independent stores.
