AVANTASIA: Entire “Ghostlights” Album Streaming, New Music Video Released

Tobias Sammet’s AVANTASIA release their new rock opera masterpiece “Ghostlights” tomorrow, Friday 29th January via Nuclear Blast. Today, you can already listen to the entire album over on Bild.de at this location.

Furthermore a new music video for the song ‘Mystery Of A Blood Red Rose‘ premieres over on MyVideo.de here.

Don’t forget, AVANTASIA will take part in the German preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest on February 25th (German National TV ARD, 8.15pm CET, live from Cologne). The band will perform ‘Mystery Of A Blood Red Rose’.

Interview With Tobias Sammet, AVANTASIA: “It’s gonna be the last time in a very long time”

Avantasia Cover ArtTobias Sammet’s AVANTASIA are set to unleash their seventh album “Ghostlights” to fans, which is the sequel to 2013’s “The Mystery Of Time”. The rock operatic opus will be released worldwide on 29th January via Nuclear Blast Records. Tobias is well known for not doing things by halves, which the new album proves in stunning fashion!

In true AVANTASIA style, there are some regular artists the fans know and love on the new album, including Bob Catley, Michael Kiske, Amanda Somerville, Jorn Lande and Ronnie Atkins. Also welcomed to the ensemble are some new guests, such as Dee Snider, Marco Hietala and Geoff Tate.

I caught up recently with Tobi for an in depth chat about “Ghostlights” and an insight into the album, as well as why the first single sounds so much like Meatloaf! Also including the huge forthcoming tour and their Eurovision entry, plus plenty more, along with an update on EDGUY. Check out some excerpts from our discussion below and listen to the full interview, (which Tobi always makes so entertaining!) on the audio player:

Talking of the guests on the album, Tobi discussed some of his choices and the process he went through:

“When I write a song like the title track for the new album, I know Michael Kiske would be the singer for that song. I have it in the back of my mind, then I’d do it right from the start.

But sometimes you have a song, for example ‘The Haunting’ with Dee Snider – the music had been written and I was standing in my basement (which is the music part of the house) and I was in there listening to the material and then I tried to imagine who could be the proper singer for that song. ‘The Haunting’ was in need of a vocalist who would be both theatrical actor, but at the same time dramatic vocalist and the song was very very eery. And I imagined somebody who should sound like a crossing between something very flamboyant and the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (laughs).

And of course I was going through my record collection and thought ‘Dee Snider’s got to be in it!’ It was not obvious I would ask Dee Snider for such a track, because it’s not exactly ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’ or ‘I Wanna Rock’, but if you listen to the final result, it sounds like no one else could have done that and in the end it fits. It’s not a choice that comes across as reasonable  before you finally do it, but after you’ve done it, it sounds like nothing else could have been better and that’s something I’m really proud of.”

Tobi continued:

“Everything comes together based on intuition. At first I’m a music lover, much more than a music producer or songwriter. I want to put the singers on there that I would want to listen to as a fan.”

Regarding the forthcoming “Ghostlights” World Tour, Tobi revealed:

“I don’t believe we’re gonna do another tour within the next three, four, five years, there are so many people involved with individual schedules. So it should not be taken for granted that everybody is available and why we want to seize the chance that we are all available for this tour. We’ll play for three hours minimum, I think it’s gonna be a little longer and we’re gonna do 24 or 25 tracks. It’s gonna be a journey through the history of Avantasia and it’s going to be very visual, we’re going to bring the whole stage production, it’s gonna be an amazing scene and something quite unique. I can highly recommend it to anyone that’s into Avantasia, it’s gonna be the last time in a very long time that you will have a chance to do so.”

AVANTASIA: More Details On “Ghostlights” Revealed

AVANTASIA‘s outstanding seventh album, “Ghostlights”, will be released worldwide on January 29th, 2016 via Nuclear Blast. Today, Tobias Sammet proudly presents the cover and announces the tracklists as well as the various formats, in which the upcoming record will be available.
The opus features guest appearances of Dee Snider, Geoff Tate, Marco Hietala, Sharon Den Adel, Michael Kiske, Ronnie Atkins, Bob Catley, Jorn Lande, Bruce Kulick, Robert Mason, Herbie Langhans, Oliver Hartmann and Sascha Paeth.

The record contains twelve songs and was produced by Tobias and Sascha Paeth in Gatestudio Wolfsburg, Germany. Paeth is responsible for engineering and mixing “Ghostlights”, too. Mastering was done by Michael Rodenberg.

In January, AVANTASIA‘s 7th studio album “Ghostlights” will be released via Nuclear Blast. After many guest stars, Tobias Sammet announces: NIGHTWISH bassist & vocalist Marco Hietala:

Tobias comments:

“What do Geoff Tate, Dee Snider, Michael Kiske, Robert Mason, Jorn Lande, Bob Catley, Ronnie Atkins, Olli Hartmann and me have in common with Marco Hietala of NIGHTWISH? Yes, we’re all good looking, funny and amazingly talented… AND: we’ll be on the new AVANTASIA album »Ghostlights« – out on January, 29th 2016.

About Marco: It was August 1997 and we were in Helsinki to mix the »Vain Glory Opera« album of EDGUY when someone played the band TAROT to me. That great band seemed to be some sort of a legend in Finland (in Germany TAROT were not really known at the time). A few years later a band called NIGHTWISH had appeared on the map and were about to take the European Metal world upside down. EDGUY played a festival in England with SAXON and amongst others: NIGHTWISH! I remember even though they had a great female vocalist how much I loved the rendition of Ozzy Osbourne’s ‘Crazy Train’ that they did – if I remember correctly – which was sung by their bass player. You know, a lot of bass players are bass players because they wanna be in a band too; and there’s only so much damage you can do to the sound of a band with just a bass. Sometimes they’re only in the band because they talk enough to organize things or they have a day job to finance the first demo recordings, nice stage clothes, or sun glasses, but at the end of the day, most of them aren’t taken seriously because… well, because they’re bass players. 🙂 And they’re always suspicious… 😉 Anyway – I don’t need a bass player because I play bass myself (not as good as Marco, but I am the cheaper solution for my own project, ha!). AND Marco is more than a bass player, he is a proper musician! I have no clue why it took so long until I eventually asked Marco Hietala (that bass playing vocalist with the two beards and the voice!!) if he could imagine singing a role on an AVANTASIA album. Now it is happening! And the results kick ass! You will love it! We’re putting together an epic metal record I believe…

Furthermore Robert Mason (WARRANT) can been confirmed to sing on the new album as well. Robert first made a name for himself back in the early nineties as the lead singer in LYNCH MOB. Robert is an amazing singer coming from what some would call a different musical world, and he contributed something very unique to the AVANTASIA world. He really gave the songs what they needed! You will hear it!

PRETTY MAIDS’ Ronnie Atkins Joins AVANTASIA

Fans in Europe and Asia have already had the pleasure to see the Danish rocker on stage with the metal opera. Now the whole world is going to get their share of PRETTY MAIDS‘ powerhouse Ronnie Atkins. He will not only appear on the new AVANTASIA album “Ghostlights” (out January 29th via Nuclear Blast), he will also join the massive all-star lineup on stage around the globe during the “Ghostlights” World Tour 2016. The European tour will start in March, tour dates in other parts of the world to be announced soon!

The new album, »GHOSTLIGHTS,« will be out January 29th, 2016 via Nuclear Blast.
